Guest Reviews
- Gareth (10/5): - Fantastic breakfast included!
- Briand (3/5): A disappointing stay. The room was totally old fashioned with everything very basic. Too expensive. - I am sorry to say that for £80, it was totally overpriced.
The mattress felt it has been there for decades as it was very springy.
The full decor was very 60’s. There was no sign of any luxury. I understand that businesses are struggling but I feel I totally overpaid for my stay. Also i could not sleep due to an outside noisy unit. The breakfast was fine but nothing special. I would not recommend it and will rather stay farther on next time. Very disappointed.
- Haydn (9/5): A comfortable stay and really good value. - The landlord went out of his way to provide us with separate beds, down to providing an extra room.
We had an enjoyable evening with a really nice meal and plenty of real ale.
The brealkfast was exceptional and really filling. The weather was bad for the short time we were there.
- Reed (9/5): -
- Peter (9/5): Comfortable in good location for Exmoor and the coast. Would recommend and stay again - Comfortable bedroom with all desirable facilities
Great choices for breakfast Bed was a little short for a tall person
- Richard (8/5): -
- Chris (10/5): Very professional and friendly staff, food brilliant. - Breakfast was amazing.
Staff brilliant. Wish I could have stayed longer.
- Karl (9/5): - Very friendly staff and very helpful
- Jacqueline (10/5): Enjoyed will return - Very clean and friendly
- Peter (9/5): - Staff where realy friendly food was superb. Only small but shower took ages to warm up.
- Nicola (5/5): Dreadful location of room within the property. - Cleanliness Dreadful room below road level. Room 10 has a small window at road level on a junction where lorries and cars pull out onto the main road which made it noisy. No outlook. Plaster around the window area lacking and needed repair and painting.
- Arran (10/5): Excellent value, great for walkers, stunning countryside location - We loved our stay at The rest and be thankful. We are 3 persons and all had our own room with en-suite toilet and shower. They have thought of everything you would need in the rooms. It’s very good value for money. Clean. We all slept well. If you are a walker there are endless trails to Duncary Beacon and surrounding areas. The breakfast was excellent and the owners are lovely.
- Charles Richard (7/5): -
- Nick (8/5): -
- Martin (9/5): A comfortable stay and good food; convenient location for Exmoor walks and trips to Dunster/Minehead - Good food - evening meal and personalised breakfast menu. Good location. Nothing to mention.

- Shirley (8/5): Enjoyable will stay again - Breakfast Excellant Mattress not to my preference,I prefer softer, however my partner liked it.
- Khadija (3/5): -
- Daniel (10/5): Comfortable stay, great food. - Well equipped modern presented room.
Fantastic quality evening and breakfast meal. Basement room.
- Diane (7/5): On first arrival I was wary, but enjoyed my peaceful stay. Room was fab as were the staff - Breakfast was great. I loved the cotton sheets and cotton duvet cover. I was a bit worried upon arrival as the room was very cold. It was sorted as promptly as possible
- Nyx (9/5): - The location for our walking holiday. The friendly staff. The atmosphere. The food.
The price. The lovely breakfast.
- Peter (9/5): - Inn was warm & welcoming - thanks
- Helena (9/5): - Room was very comfortable, with all the necessary items you would need. Food great but menu a little limited.
- GEORGE (10/5): -
- Pete (10/5): A very relaxing atmosphere. - A very lovely place with smiley happy staff. nothing
- Nick (9/5): Excellent stay with friendly staff and comfortable facilities - Friendly staff .. comfortable bed Nothing
- Derrick (10/5): Pleasant and friendly staff -
- Anke (8/5): Easy stay when visiting the area. - Great staff and friendly owner. Well organized, focused on the customer. The pub. Clean and authentic. It was a bit traveling back in time and I was just not used to a single room anymore….
- Jamie (8/5): -
- Cora (10/5): Lovely, cosy weekend - The food was delicious and the staff were delightful. We were going to a wedding nearby and it was the perfect location to stay. Rooms were very comfy. Definitely recommend. Everything was great
- Gary (9/5): The perfect place to stay overnight as a stop off on our way to devon. - The breakfast was very good, pre ordered the night before so there was no waiting in the morning. The staff were welcoming and attentive.
- Asim (8/5): &-108 - Excellent Washing room too small
- Ruth (10/5): Best Place I've stayed in by far. Would recommend definitely to anyone that wants outstanding. - When I arrived the Management & Staff, were professional polite & accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble, the room was spotless, the bed so comfortable, everything in my room & more, toiletries, dressing gown, tray to put shoes on, breakfast was fantastic, cooked breakfast fresh & fantastic tasting bacon & sausages. Can't fault anything.
- Cameron (4/5): Okay, but dated decor and dissatisfying food mean it was not worth the amount we paid. - The room was clean and spacious, and the location was very convenient for reaching the places I wanted to visit.
The staff were all very friendly as well. The decor was very dated, with a 70s atmosphere reinforced by a trouser press being present. The hot tap sputtered and spat wildly, presumably with all the pressure the shower lacked, that being anemic at best.
The King bed we had paid for, at £120 for the night, was comfortable at first test, but on getting under the covers it was immediately apparent that it was two single beds pushed together, with the gap between the two being very evident to the touch under the sheet.
The food was subpar for the nearly £80 we paid, with venison bolognese for myself coming out and the only moisture being what little fat there was on the meat and the moisture in the noodles.
Myself and my fiancée both opted for Sticky Toffee pudding as dessert, reasoning that was a safe bet. It was promising at first glance, with springy cake, but on tasting it all the flavour was in the toffee sauce. We highly suspected that it had the same base as the Bread-and-butter pudding option, with only the sauce being changed.
We are not breakfast people, but even if we were we would have opted to look elsewhere, with the preorder breakfast menu giving options such as "You may pick ONE fruit from banana, apple, orange.." and the sandwiches having no vegetarian options, being all pork based or smoked haddock.

- Gill (10/5): Excellent accommodation - Everyone really friendly. Room was small but spotless. Pub was warm and welcoming along with staff The food was a little bit bland and a bit on the expensive side
- Ian (9/5): Very positive experience, and definitely one to go back to. - The welcome was warm and genuine. The landlady was very helpful throughout our stay. The rooms are basic, but this is a country pub, and everything we needed was there.
- Richard (9/5): Excellent, well-run establishment with friendly staff. Great value for money. - The breakfast was very good and cooked perfectly. They have dairy-free options too. Very comfortable bed with good acilities in the room Nothing

- Dave (10/5): An excellent stay and made to feel so welcome. - Eric and the staff at this lovely quiet rural location on the edge of Exmoor cannot do enough for you!
A lovely and pleasant stay and highly recommended.
Thank you 🙏 Please oil the squeaky hinges on the accommodation doors 👍🏻😉
- johan (7/5): - OK, friendly staff some noise from airconditioning machine just out the window...not too bad
- Steve (10/5): If your looking for genuine local folk in a comfy stay, Rest & Be Thankful is for you. - I booked this hotel for a stop over on route to Woolacombe Having read some of the previous reviews, naturally I was a little hesitant on what to expect and of the mind set "well its only for one night" and then of course there was the comments made about Eric and the property being dated Well I can only and honestly speak as I find We pulled into the carpark around 6pm there were some very jolly farmers having a well earned beer outside they were very friendly and pleasant as we walked by into the hotel Once inside we were greeted very warmly my partner couldn't help herself and said " where's grumpy then" (OMG) and the lady duly called Eric over and a very light hearted conversation was had around the pervious negative review left especially around Eric who I have to say was anything but rude just a normal hard working Devonshire gent We were given the keys to the room and yes to some it may have appeared dated but lets not forget this is an old quintessential English Devon pub the rooms were spotlessly clean amazingly comfy bed and all the room amenities anyone could wish for from bathrobes to an abundance of teas and coffees with plenty of milk pods too We booked an evening meal which was very enjoyable we then sat outside to have an evening night cap and a further chat to the very friendly locals Great nights sleep was had Breakfast was first class and freshly cooked and bounty full presented well and piping hot too Just after breakfast is where our stay hit a stumbling block after breakfast I went outside to find that I had foolishly left the camping fridge plugged in the van battery was flat I walked back in and approached Eric to explain my situation and did he know of a garage close by Eric to his credit said to me give 5 mins and he would bring his car around and that he had jump leads to help me get it started Unfortunately battery was so flat the it wouldn't start Eric said don't worry phoned a man from the garage and... There was nothing we didn't like, it was all perfect.
- paul (8/5): - a lovely traditional place in a beautiful quiet area of exmoor national park.nice clean rooms and a fantastic breakfast which you get to choose the night before from a long list of items.it was perfect for us and i highly recommend a stay here.
- joanne (7/5): -
- Safari (8/5): Incredible value for money. - Dinner and breakfast were great! Staff very friendly and the Inn itself was very well run and there were no problems. I had a single room which was small but not cramped. The floor creaked and so did the bed but that only seemed to go with the general ambiance. Noisy generator or some such which meant not having the window open with the tv on and the bathroom ceiling needs some paint.
- julie (8/5): Middle of Nowhere - Spacious room which was spotlessly clean, trouser press, tray for dirty boots and a safe! The addition of bath robes was a nice touch but this could have been taken up a notch by providing bath sheets instead of bath towels and I have never had face cloths provided before Unfortunately Eric? has no people skills and every encounter with him made me feel uncomfortable
- Christine (9/5): -
- carney (9/5): Ideal for a quiet stay but conveniently close to Minehead and Dunster castle. - During the evening meal we were presented with a breakfast men from which we made our choices. I chose porridge followed by a full English. The food was served hot and cooked to perfection, accompanied by wholemeal toast plenty of butter and conserves, coffee and orange juice. The previous evening I had a chicken caesar salad which was nicely presented and plentiful. The catering presented real value for money and the drinks were not expensive.
The gentleman who ran the bar and, it seems ecvery other aspect of the Inn was very friendly and conscientious. He made feel welcome. I wouldn't hesitate to stay hnere again. Our room was large, well furnished and immaculately clean my only complaint would be the shower head which was loose and needed attention.
- Chris (9/5): Great place to stay, convenient for the North Coast Attractions and very relaxing. - Great parking. Lovely welcome. Nice big room. Great Food. Friendly Staff. Relaxed Atmosphere. Good Banter. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we were well looked after and nothing was too much trouble. Nothing
- Paul (8/5): Attentive host thanks Eric, restful stay and very close to the nearby park. - Comfortable beds and breakfast was good!! The shower worked but could have been better by not losing pressure.
- Brian (8/5): Very good -
- Erica (7/5): Good - Breakfast was good, local produce End of corridor room quiet except for noise from external refrigerator/generator with the window open
- Robert (10/5): Comfortable, Country Pub with spacious welcoming rooms. - The location was nice and quiet, and was at the cross roads in a little village. It was comfortable and the room was very spacious. I really enjoyed the food and the welcome staff were lovely. I have recommended it to my family when I returned home from my work trip. I can't really think of any thing.
- Tobias (9/5): Really nice place - Nice place nice people Nothing
- peter (10/5): Nice country pub - Nice country pub room was clean and comfortable with ensuite.
Staff are great and the pub has a nice relaxed feel with a bar area used by the locals (Friendly) with everything you want from a country pub.
Restaurant area separate from the pub with a good varied menu.the food I had was great and good value for money.
I will definitely stay here again if I am in the area.
- Jer (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (8/5): Very good - Breakfast was fantastic and the location was very good. The staff were very calm and helpful, especially considering they were having to help deal with a very serious road accident which had just happened close by. The bed wasn't the most comfortable I've ever slept in, but it was OK.
- Angela (8/5): Hidden away gem - Lovely little pub & restaurant. Staff were pleasant and the carvery was excellent. Beds were extremely comfortable

- Gareth (8/5): Very good - Hi, lovely place , everything was fab . The only draw back was the refrigeration unit was very loud especially we had to have the window open all night . Other than that lov try lay stay 👍
- Stephanie (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent friendly staff. Spotlessly clean Nothing⁹0
- Craig (7/5): Pleasant and relaxing - Close to our destination .

- Raz (10/5): - Great Stay
Room was OK
Service was great
- David (10/5): Fantastic stay. - This was an amazing stay with excellent customer service, a fantastic room and an awesome breakfast. I was able to check in early at 12:30 and the room was larger than expected. Can’t recommend this place enough! Nothing, it was perfect!
- Frances (6/5): Could be better - The landlord and staff were very friendly and my bag was carried to my room. There is a large free public car park adjacent to the pub. It is in a good location for exploring Exmoor. The breakfast and dinner were good. The view from the room was good but see below. The bathroom was tiny but OK. The room needs an upgrade. The single mattress was lumpy. The chair was a worn out upright dining chair. The kettle would not fit under the tap. A packet of biscuits would have been nice.
There were 2 extra steps to my room in addition to the main stairs but no handrail.
There was a mid level wall partially blocked my view, which I accept, but the faded plastic flowers are an abomination. Get rid of them asap before anyone else gets nightmares!
Desserts are overpriced at £8, even more than I would expect to pay in my area of London.
- Ian (10/5): - Excellent family run hotel
Good evening meal, breakfast excellent,
Bed room clean and tidy. Large car park
- Elizabeth (9/5): Superb - Comfy bed, clean room and plenty of tea supply. Also some of the best pub food I've had in a long time, washed down with a nice local real ale. Car park was super busy on Friday night (but I did find a spot!)
- John (10/5): Excellent place with Service - Excellent place and service. Location wise -loved it.
- Anne (10/5): I felt welcomed and looked after. The food was excellent - Welcoming and convenient for my LEJOG walk. A very appropriate name! Nothing to dislike
- Tony (7/5): Coleridge way walk - This is a lovely old pub, room was excellent great facilities, evening meal fantastic, excellent breakfast (quite a lot) Room was fairly noisy due to plumbing and kitchen noise (room 8) but it didn’t ruin my stay!
