Guest Reviews
- Dominic (8/5): - Satisfactory overall. Good service and comfortable stay. Restaurants around. Convenient.Bus stop in front of hotel but subway station is far away, need to a bus to a station. We are happy with the stay and shall come back again,
- Ulf (6/5): Funktionellt boende i lågprisklassen.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Is a bit outskirt but value for money. Beside has a restaurant quite reasonably price and delicious. Happy with some of the staffs at counter. Male is more friendlier than female.
- qiongtao (6/5): Ok - it is OK for trip.
Cheaper
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good price
- Don G. (8/5): Getting star shanghai - The room was all I needed there was a restaurant in the hotel where I ate supper . A short walk to metro . T he price for the room was o k .
- Verified traveler (10/5): good stay in shanghai - Really helpful staffs, nice location near subway station n bus stop, reasonable price of staying. The only one problem is a wrong location on google maps :( recommend use apple maps or baidu
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Verified traveler (4/5):
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Nathan (8/5): - Decent hotel with decent rooms restaurant on site plus very friendly staff! Enjoyed my stay at genting star
- cornelia (8/5): Will come again - I stay there many times. It is the best quality/price hotel in Shanghai. Clean, friendly, calm Garden rooms. Give them a smile and they smile back. The Lady manager speaks English well. Opposite is the Bus to Poeple's Square and there are round the corner convenient stores and eateries. Mc Do and Starbuck are at the 10 minutes Subway Station next to the old Railway expo. Next to the hotel is a wonderful Park.
- Natalie (6/5): Convenient location - The hotel was quite worn out but clean. The room facing the main road was a bit noisy. The heating system was not working the first night of our stay but no extra duvet could be provided. The general experience was quite disappointing.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Muito sujo - Muito sujo descreve
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- KOUGH (8/5): convenient! - i stay there because i really don't want to travel about 6 hours to and from rehearsals from one day to the next; therefore, it's convenient!
- Renan (10/5): Bem localizado, 10 min do metrô.
- Diego (6/5): Para turistear funciona bien.
- Verified traveler (6/5): It's Just So-So - The bad things are small room, smelling terrible in a no-window standard room, wifi signal is not stable, housekeeping is not professional. Good things include relatively good location and big bed.
- MARIO (6/5): value for money - Old hotel, small rooms, staff was ok, but in general it looks like a backpacker hostel.
The area is a bit away from everything also, not the kind of place id come back to, but it was very cheap, no complains there
- Tom (6/5): This hotel is only so-so overall - The standard room without window has some unpleasant smell. The room is pretty small but with a big bed, which is a positive characteristic. It's not difficult to find this hotel. The location of the hotel is good. But you can't expect this hotel a very nice place with good service. It's just so-so.
- chaiyos (4/5): - very strong smell of cigarette in lobby and elevator. Staff can hardly understand English. It s pretty far away from city centre and train station. I was pretty satisfied with the room though.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Well-located but the cleanliness is disappointing - Very noisy and Chinese people smoke in the halls, elevator, stair, etc...
- Verified traveler (6/5): Unknown Noises - The room for me is on the third floor.. Although the room faces the residence community instead of the busy road, there are still some unknown noises. Maybe, the situation would be better, if on the higher floors. Staying here, convenient transportation should be marked. Bus stop just near the hotel's front door, and the Dabaishu metro station is no more than ten minutes away on foot (but you need to know how to go across a residence block).
- mark (2/5): bad location..bad hotel - the room was dirty although the linen seemed clean. Basic facilities but damp and dirty rooms. Location was awful
- Jeff (6/5): Rating for three start is no propriety - Rating for three start is no propriety however the discounted price is just about to match to what received.
- vivian (4/5): Below average - The staffs from the hotel was nice. Everyday your room will be cleaned. The price is good, but the condition of the hotel is very bad. You can smell smoking from your room almost everyday. The room condition is old. The bed is horrible. The mattress is so hard. You can feel you just sleep on the ion springs. The air condition is loud. I personally won't stay in this hotel anymore.
- mark (8/5): they were nice! - i needed a better place to stay rather than a hotel that had mold and was unclean. this was cool!
- don (8/5): Shanghai vacation - I just spent the night there and was gone all day so it was all I needed. The room was clean and the staff were good .No problams.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Will stay there again - good value for money, the only problem if you're going to stay out passed 10 o'clock you might have to consider getting a cab back...
- Verified traveler (8/5): Private room cheaper than a dorm in youth hostel - Employees was not nice, they were always talking in chinese and laughing plus they don't speak english. It was a little bit far from the bund but the room was clean and hotel easy to find. I had a discount for the double bed room and I think it was a good quality/price deal even if mattress was not so comfy.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Cheap hotel - Clean and comfort hotel with cheap rate. Near MRT station and bus stop in front hotel..
- Verified traveler (8/5): Close to METRO SHANGHAI station - Hotel location is close to bus stop and MRT station.. Daibashu line 3 station maybe less than 10min by walk, very easy to find this hotel
Turn right from exit 1 and walk along corner street. If you wanna go Nanjing road, you can use bus no 537 in front hotel.
Room is clean, and comfort with cheap rate..
- CLIFF JOHNY (4/5): Getting worse by the day!! - Had a good reception, but was very disappointed with the Wi-fi. Ended up giving up on connecting to the internet!!! The room is badly cleaned!! Would be nice if the cleaner spends over 5 minutes and do a proper job, instead of giving the floor a quick mop. The latter having been used in all the previous rooms on the floor and not washed in between I suppose leaving the room with a stinky cigarette smell.
- Nadine (6/5): Affordable Living - For the value it was good. It was very assessible to local transportation.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - clean comfortable rooms and met most expectations, however the morning of my checkout i asked the front desk attendant to call me a cab. He said he would so i stood around for a half an hour before asking him how long it would be. He had never called me a cab and told me if i wanted one i had to get it myself.
- Jason (6/5): Cheap price - In middle of October, I still suffered bite from mosquito, Ceiling crack with yellow sting duo to roof leaking. Bath towel is very old. All of these need improved.
- zach (8/5): Pretty nice and simple really good neighbor hood - Love the place around this hotel. Pretty nice cheap food that's delicious
- Yi-Hsun (8/5): Will stay here again - It's an economic place,so I don't have much expectation for its hotel condition and service, it turned out to be okay though. My friends are in Hong-Ko; otherwise, there is not much to see in the area. The neighborhood is not bad.
- Shane (2/5): Terrible hotel experience - We chose this hotel on the basis of it being listed on the Hotels.com "Favourite" list for Shanghai. The fact that the address provided was over a kilometer from the hotel is actually situated would make me question how they can stand over this tag
We attempted phoning the hotel to get the correct address, only to find that none of the hotel staff spoke a word of English. I don't feel it's unreasonable to expect a basic level of English for a hotel catering to international guests. Certainly enough so that guests can actually locate the hotel!
Once we had actually found the hotel we found ourselves in a non-smoking room which ironically stank of cigarette smoke, no functioning air-conditioning, springs protruding from the mattress, plaster falling from the walls, curtains covered in mold, a filthy shower, the hallway outside our room flooded and countless other problems too numerous to list. The sole positive I can say about the hotel was good wifi, which allowed us to immediately book into another hotel and end our stay here not a minute too soon.
I'll chalk this down as as a lesson in getting what you pay for. Having said that, I wouldn't recommend this hotel at any price. In fact I'd need to be paid to stay there again. Do not consider staying unless extremely desparate!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Decent for a short stay. Quite a walk to the nearest subway. Room's cleanliness and comfort are a 4 out of 10.
- Rogerio (6/5): Regular to poor, but ok given price - Hotel needs renovation. Room is much smaller than it looks in the pictures. No one speaks English! Still an acceptable budget hotel... Not far from metro station.
- kenni (4/5): Not good. - According to the staff, WI fi only works in certain rooms. That's why I was changed rooms the first time. The a/c malfunctioned and started shooting out ice chips then leaking water where my head was minutes earlier. When the manager came to check out the issue, he pulled the curtin back where there was mold. He took the filters out of the a/c and promptly cleaned them in my shower, all bad. I packed my bags and left.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Very Fine low budget hotel - Not much to do around the area by foot. Still, close to Daibashu metro, witch is pretty central. It's a low budget but very fine hotel for the price. Not one complaint. My complaint is about Shanghai in general where you can't escape men smoking EVERYWHERE! From restaurants to elevators.. And they drive like retards. Look both ways DURING crossing.. I went for many reasons, but Shanghai isn't really impressive and is not a vacation destination. Shanghai like HongKong and China in general can't hold a candle to the insanely wonderful Thailand and Japan..
- yun il (6/5): Clean, comfortable but service..... - Room is clean and comfortable. Location is not so far from the main attraction. It takes 30 minutes by metro. But service is not so good. They couldn't check my booking so I was standing there for 30-40 minutes and they never said sorry. So I should complain them to get a room which I didn't like to do. Finally I got a room but the view was dirty dump ( thought they should give me better room as they couldn't check my booking). It was really disappointed.
- Dr MAK (10/5): Best place to stay at! - -Easy to locate from the nearby subway Daibashu station
-Inroom wifi
-nice and clean room
-washrooms were maintained nicely
- Laowai (6/5): Decent hotel: You get what you pay for - I spent a total of three weeks at the Genting Star over a period of a few months. The staff at reception were friendly and spoke very, very basic English - which made check-in easier. Getting any information beyond these formalities was impossible, however. The rooms were basic but clean. The beds and pillows were quite hard and unaccommodating by western standards. They provided towels which had been cut in half, which I found funny. The WiFi worked intermittently and by the end I had trouble using it at all. But the biggest problem was the hordes of screaming people at almost all hours - I was awoken many times and it would often persist into the later morning. It happened so many times, if there were a night unpunctuated by loud yelling, I would count it as a blessing. However, it is not a bad hotel and the price is pretty hard to beat. So if you're looking for very basic accommodation in the northern Hongkou district, then the Genting Star is probably your best bet.
- Peng (4/5): low - Poor small Room , no slippers , no tooth brushes , broken towels with hair .
- Ben (8/5): Great location, good hotel - meets all your needs - In terms of value for money this hotel is excellent. It's outside of central Shanghai, but is very close to the metro station which makes it ideal for those who are on a budget.
Location is one of its major plus points (read an earlier review for accurate and easy to follow directions).
Hotel itself is nice, relatively modern. Rooms are reasonably sized and come with everything you need including air conditioning, cable TV and toiletries. Bathroom is nice, good quality shower with hot water every morning.
Staff speak only a little English, but that made no difference to my journey as I was only there for three days. Restaurant attached serves some slightly over-priced food, bit is of good quality.
Would recommend for international tourists fortunate enough to be able to visit.
- Edward (4/5): Poorly maintained facilities, difficult to locate - difficult to locate after exiting from metro. room has a smell. staff entered room despite being granted extended (1hour) checkout
- William (4/5): Reception is terrible. - Hotel turned out good value,BUT reception is terrible. They tried to give me a lesser room than booked & paid for. They were downright aggressive. When checking in at midnight I did not need that.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Cheap hotel near a Metro stop if you're not fussy - The hotel is good value for money and appears to be popular with young non-Chinese student travelers.
I stayed in the cheapest window-less room. There is a shampoo dispenser in the shower cubicle, but you will need to bring your own soap or buy it in the hotel shop (open 24 hours). The hotel is well maintained, although the wallpaper in the bedroom was peeling away a bit and some of the corridors smelled of cigarette smoke. The free Wi-Fi is reasonably fast.
The staff were very efficient and were nice enough to check me in three hours early (around 11am) without charging me for an extra day. I spoke Chinese to them so can't attest to their English ability, but judging by all the non-Chinese guests, it shouldn't be a problem if you don't speak the local language.
The hotel's not in the town center, but you're only 5-10 mins' walk from the nearest Metro stop (Dabaishu on Line 3), and from there about 30-45 mins from downtown.
There are some good cheap places to eat nearby, including a halal noodle shop, and you're 30 mins' walk (or 10 mins' bus) from some of China's premier colleges (Tongji, Fudan, etc), and the Wujiaochang district, which is a popular student hangout.
All in all, it's an excellent choice if 1) money's tight, 2) you need to be near the Metro, 3) you don't plan to spend too much time in your room and 4) you're easy-going about random things happening, like seeing business cards advertising "massage" get shoved under your door.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Good - Good
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great budget hotel! - The room as very clean, the bathroom was great, the staff spoke English reasonably well, and the free WiFi was easy and hassle-free. This is a great budget hotel. However, don't depend on the map to find it; the taxi driver had a very difficult time finding this hotel. Also, this hotel is actually pretty close to Dabaishu Station, NOT Chifeng.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Degrading services. - Chose this hotel a few times because of convenience. Recently, I've noticed that the quality of service at the front desk is degrading. Moreover, the rooms are not being cleaned up to previously experienced standards. Last time I had something like one worn out towel split in half from what should have supposedly been two clean towels.
- Bruce (8/5): Convenient to bus and subway - good value - Even though the hotel is not close to the Bund, it's very convenient to take (various) buses and subway. The front desk staff is very friendly and helpful. The room is quiet. There are many eateries in the neighborhood. The restaurant connected to the hotel is not that good (it's pricy and smoke-filled).
- Samuel (8/5): Vacation with my best friend - The Genting is the perfect hotel for a quick get away. Plenty of good food close especially the Muslim stretched noodles place next door.
Taxi drivers had a little bit of a hard time finding it, but it is very close to the subway. It is a 200rmb taxi ride to the PEK airport from the hotel ($30usd)
I would recommend this hotel who need a place to stay and isn't picky
- sean (6/5): A 3 star budget hotel that u can't resist. - Wonderful stay! Affordable price with comfort. No issue on transport , bus stand right in front of hotel and easy to get a cab as well.
- Backpacker (10/5): nice - hard to find specially from the subway but very nice hotel
- Paul (6/5): Budget Star Review - well, you get what you pay for I guess, the staff were helpful and I found the restaurant good, the bed was hard - thats OK, but the pillow had something like straw in the middle section, I learned to live with it, its a good walk to the subway but line 3 only gets you so far. Overall I'd have to say it was OK for that end of the market and the rooms at the back end are quiet, apart from the noisy cleaning ladies....
- CKF (10/5): Good and safe hotel - I'm very thankful to front office executive whose name is Green for his invaluable assistance. He speaks good English and helped to arrange my trip to Suzhou and advised me on how to get around Shanghai. His advice helped me to save a lot of money on transportation.
- Verified traveler (6/5): So - So hotel - Good location and easy to commute. The rooms are clean, besides the provided towels. If you are a non-smoker, this hotel is not for you. The smoke gets into the rooms from the next door and that is pretty unpleasant. Also, be ready to see mostly Chinese who seems like settled in the rooms and it gets loud because of children in the hallways.
If you want a budget hotel with great WiFi connection and short travel to the Center, then the hotel is good to book.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good service for a very cheap price. A bit far away from center though, but subway is just within 10 minutes walk.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Clean and Comfortable - Comfortable and clean for the price. Restaurant is decent enough. Just that some distance from Dabaishu metro and a little way out from certain areas.
- Verified traveler (6/5): OK - Not terrible but not great. Close to Chin Feng station and good for a night. Bathrooms are clean, modern and a good size, but bedroom a bit tired looking and doesn't smell great. Sheets seemed clean but think there might be bed mites, that or I got bitten by Mosquitos, not sure. Wifi available in all rooms at no charge, convenient shop located downstairs. All in all, not bad for the price.
- Juan Pablo Acevedo (6/5): Ok for what you pay - The hotel is ok, the room was only cleaned on its "surface", the surrounding area is not so nice, there are some discrete massage businesses and some dirty restaurants. The staff were kind, I took the room without TV or window, I'd have rather paid a bit extra for a room with a window. For the price is a good option if you are touristing in Shanghai and just need a comfortable bed to lay.
- Peter S (8/5): one of the better low budget hotels. - I was coming second time to Genting Star. Rooms are small but not the typical smell in the room. Everything works and is really reasonable for the price. Once you find the way to the MRT Metro, life is much easier. If you are coming first time, better use a taxi to find the location. I would come again as people are friendly. Few stores around to buy your coke and to take a local diner.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good price for room - It is a good room and nice toilet for the price
- George (8/5): You get what you pay for - Don't expect a lot. The rooms are far from luxurious but if you're just looking for a place to sleep at night then it's definitely worth the money. The staff speak English, are friendly and helpful and there is a restaurant and shop downstairs which is useful if you arrive late and want some food or supplies.
- SD (8/5): Value for Money in Shanghai - Clean and functional room with free wifi Excellent value for money Good location - just 10min from Dabaishu Metro Station (Line 3) Staff does not speaks little English so communication is difficult Inefficient and slow check-in
- Sung (8/5): Not bad for a hotel in Dabaishu! - Location-wise, it's a bit far from every tourist spot in shanghai, but you can't beat the price! And considering the low price, the service is good, the staff is amazing (better than many others I've been to in Shanghai) and the restaurant food is also fine. They even let me go without any extra charge when I forgot to leave on the day and overstayed my due. A 5-min walk from the Dabaishu subway so it's not too bad.
- Fon K. (10/5): Clean and quiet location in northern Shanghai - For the price I paid per day (very very reasonable), the Genting Star is excellent. Helpful staff, quiet neighborhood, clean modern style rooms and a convenient store inside. About a 10 to 15 minute walk to Daibashu Metro on line 3 yellow line. Will definitely stay again!
- Verified traveler (4/5): Booked a non-smoking room - got a smoking room - I booked a non-smoking room in the Genting Star Hotel in Shanghai. When I arrived, they gave me a smoking room. I complained but they told me they only had smoking rooms available. Indeed, the entire hotel, including the lobby and the hallways smells like smoke. So if you're sensitive to cigarette smoke, don't book this hotel!
- G.W. (10/5): Great choice! - We had a pleasing stay at Genting Star Shanghai. The staff at the counter is nice. We didn't encounter any check-in problems. It is our first time in Shanghai so we really appreciated the staff's more-than-willing attitude of teaching us directions. We speak mandarin so it probably contributed to our smooth conversations with the staff. Housekeeping personnel is also nice. We booked 2 rooms, one with windows and the other had none. We were surprised that the room without windows was as good as the room with windows. The air conditioning unit in one of our rooms is noisy but is tolerable. Both rooms are not spacious but are very clean. The bed is comfortable. We loved the shower for its forceful water flow. The hotel's location is OK since convenience stores, restaurants, and the subway station are of walking distance to the hotel. There is a restaurant just beside the hotel and it served tasty food at an affordable price.
- S H (8/5): Good experience, Great price! - For the price, I could not find a better deal in Shanghai. My room was clean and tidy. The staff was attentive to my needs. Not all staff speaks English, but everyone was friendly and able to help. There is a laundry machine on-site. Location is close to the metro. (15 min walk) Neighborhood has many local style restaurants. There is a small market around the corner from the hotel. Overall, I will definitely stay here again while on a budget.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Terrible Service and terrible location, dont book - The staff was horrendous, the room overpriced, and the location was bad. Stay at one of the hostels in the city center for a better bet. The room itself was decently comfortable so if all you need is bare minimum place to sleep this may work for you. If you are looking for anything else you will be disappointed.
- Rokjit (10/5): Clean bed and hot shower on a budget - Hotel is about 10min walk from Dabaishu metro station. Exit from the northern end where the food stall is (great breakfast wraps just 10 yuan) then walk east staying on the right of the big road till you reach a petrol station. Bear right and cut through it and walk right till you reach the pedestrian crossing. Cross the main road and continue walking to the right a further 100m or so you will arrive.
- A traveller (8/5): Cheap and cozy but a little far for most places - Hotel was very clean and staff were very friendly. The neighbourhood is very quiet. Overall, it's nice and cozy, and you can tell the hotel is quite new. But it is a little far from most touristic places. Take a while, even on the metro to go anywhere
- krish (8/5): cheap, efficient and friendly - ideal if all you need is a clean bed to sleep. personification of the no frills hotel
- Verified traveler (8/5): Cheap hotel with great value for money - I paid 8 GBP per night and had a great time staying there. Clean, big rooms.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice, clean hotel - Nice hotel, friendly staff, quiet neighborhood. The bed was a bit uncomfortable, but other than that the room was okay. I would probably stay there again.
- Ray (4/5): Dirty, stinky, no restaurant - Dirty beddings only changed after complaining, non-smoking zone not cleaned from stinky cigarettes, no restaurant although they pretend to have one on their website.
- Ray (6/5): No restaurant - Although they pretend having a restaurant, this one is closed and there is no place to get a coffee in the neighborhood. The library is a non-smoking room, but nobody cares and it stinks awfully, making it impossible for non-smokers to stay there. There were empty bottles and full ashtrays in an adjacent room in the library for 4 days. There were bloodstains on our bedding and we had to complain a few times until the were changed.
- Max (8/5): GOOD ALTERNATIVE FOR SHORT TIME - Was succesful. Very clean and good attendance.
- avidtraveler (8/5): Bang for your buck - Genting Star is listed as both a hostel and hotel but it definitely fits the latter category. The hotel staff know a little English which is a bit difficult. The rooms do not have any windows which is a bit eerie at first. However, the hotel provides daily room service, the beds are fairly comfortable and the hotel is clean. They also provide an electric kettle, toilet paper, paper cups and most importantly, clean towels! The most annoying part is the translucent glass in the bathroom, giving you no privacy. The hotel has a restaurant and a small convenience store right in the lobby. For the price you pay, the hotel is great.
- Verified traveler (6/5): If you want a no-frills place to stay - The staff were friendly and helpful and spoke good English. The yellow line (Dabashai stop) is two blocks away, but in general the hotel is quite far from the center and touristic sites if you are in Shanghai as a tourist. If you use taxis it can get expensive. You must give yourself an hour on the train to go anywhere. You can't beat the price and for the price you get a clean simple room and the usual hotel amenities. On week nights this hotel felt very safe, clean, and comfortable. However, on the weekend there were loud parties going on in the hallways. I'm not sure if that was because of one group in particular or if that is a regular occurrence on weekends.
- Eric (8/5): Excellent place for the price - Nothing too fancy - I stayed in the cheapest room offered - but it was still very respectable. There was hot water, a clean room, a safe neighborhood with affordable restaurants, and no odors or anything that I've seen described in other hotels. The staff speak a few words of English but it's mostly a Chinese place, which was actually pretty novel to experience.
