Guest Reviews
- Ivanov (10/5): - Friendly person...very friendly
Small picnic aerial
Safe car park Nothing
- Pauline (3/5): Disappointing. Won’t return. - Our room was ok and the bathroom was also ok. The wine I requested was put in the room This is not a hotel. it’s a B&B. There were communication issues with the owners to the point that I rang Booking.com customer service the day before our visit as I felt sure that no one was at the property.
The kerb appeal was poor.
Due to the poor communication there was a very poor rapport at the door on arrival which resulted in the husband talking to me through the ring door bell accusing me of being rude to his wife! None of this was a good way to treat a paying customer.
We had paid to stay for two night but as our arrangements in Ilfracombe had changed we only stayed one night preferring to abandon the second night.
- David (8/5): - I do like the stay because it's a Victorian house and it is a Victorian standard. When I have a problem to get through the arch the staff was very helpful to a range of parking spaces and its parking space just at the church is one of the few places to get free parking. It would be nice if the arch was better informed and height restricted but that is on me because I did not know there was an arch and they were pictures of her as well. And finally the room I was staying. The mirror next to my bed was producing green light all night and it did wake me up so on a time so I had to cover up my hat to make it dark proper so I'm wondering that they can find the ways to turn the green lights off so I can sleep properly.
- Kim (8/5): - Very clean and very comfortable bed. Delicious breakfast. The distance from town and the hills. Also be prepared for many steps in the property.
- Patricia (8/5): We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. However, we were disappointed that the lounge and bar wasn’t open for us to relax in. I - Beautiful property in a good location. The old worldliness about it.
- Daniel (8/5): - We had a great stay. The owners were very friendly and helpful. They gave us loads of great ideas of where to visit locally.
The breakfast was delicious,
The bedroom was clean and comfortable and great value for money. .

- Nicholas (10/5): Fantastic stay and will definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a place I will definitely be going stay th - The place was clean very comfortable bed the breakfast was fantastic and a very friendly warm welcoming when we arrived
- Amanda (1/5): On return to hotel after attending an event locally we decided not to stay and went home despite having paid. - Location is good for walking into town and seafront however property on arrival did not meet our expectations from photos on website. The exterior was very rundown and porch area very tatty and dirty. Owner offhand and not friendly and welcoming as described on reviews- door not fully opened during conversation with myself and then again with husband . I had exchanged emails with hotel prior to date explaining we would be arriving at 12.30 for local event so they were expecting us. Husband asked to use facilities inside hotel and was not impressed .
- helenmF5008LV (10/5): Lovely traditional B&B With Bar Ilfracombe - Lovely traditional B&B
Great Breakfast
Comfortable Bar
Friendly Hosts Paul & Lorinda
Where we went wrong, we booked on booking.com I will book on their website next time.
It’s not a fancy beachside hotel it is a family friendly traditional B&B a short pleasant walk to ilfracombe Beach & Harbour, (they gave us a shortcut to town) to avoid the hilly roads. They made us feel totally welcome.
Car parking on site.
Bandit the dog we fell in love with him ❤️

- Peter (6/5): -
- Nicola (10/5): A brilliant place to have a short break for walking South West Coastal footpaths. The weather was rather blustery and ra - The location, delicious breakfasts and very kind knowledgable and helpful owners.

- thesmallhouse (10/5): A stay at The Darnley Hotel - Lovely, clean hotel with onsite parking and within walking distance of the town centre. We were made to feel welcome and the cooked breakfast set us up for the day.
- Asfaw (7/5): It’s was okay - Good breakfast and clean rooms. The stairs were so difficult for a toddler and the bathroom was separated from the room.
- jvennmorton (10/5): Ideal base for holiday in Ilfracombe - Lovely base for a holiday in Ilfracombe. Short 10mins walk into the town and all of the attractions and conveniences. Room was clean and airy with all the facilities we needed. Hotel staff were extremely helpful and the cooked breakfast was fantastic!
- Ryan (10/5): - Lovely friendly people, nice and clean, great breakfast A little hot could have done with a fan but otherwise perfect
- The Venn-morton family (10/5): Ideal base for a break in Ilfracombe - Perfect location - just a short 10 mins walk from the town.
Comfortable room with all the facilities we needed.
Delicious cooked breakfast. It was not a problem for us but walking into town may be a challenge for those with mobility issues due to some steep hills.
- ibrahim (8/5): -
- Ricky (8/5): Darnley Hotel stay - Great room and bathroom, bed very comfortable and we both slept well. Fridge and tv. Hosts were very welcoming and informative about the town. Free off road parking. Exceptionally hot day meant that room was very hot. Room gets afternoon sun, it has dark curtains but some sort of fan needed. All 3 rooms went to breakfast together, as we were last through the door we had to wait an hour for our full English to be brought to the table. Hotel advertised a bar, but had it had
no stock unfortunately.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Reasonable stay in an old house with character - The hotel was easy to find but through a narrow gateway, in a larger car it might have been difficult. The room was clean, and money had been spent, but the finish was poor. Outside needed a tidy up.The bar did not open as scheduled, seemed a bit disorganised. Breakfast small but otherwise alright. Acceptable for the price.
- Arthur (8/5): Very good -
- Cathryn (10/5): Stress free and good location - Cody and quiet N/a

- ChevyMan68 (10/5): Really nice afternoon tea - Great afternoon tea. Lovely sat outside in a private garden in the sun. Loads of food and drink. Hostess/owner was very welcoming and friendly. Would recommend a visit.
- Mark (9/5): Superb -
- Mark (9/5): Relaxing and homely stay in a lovely hotel. - Lovely old building. Set in a quiet area with secure parking.. Very clean hotel and it retains its charm of a bygone era, whilst transcending into the 21st Century. Extremely comfy pillows to sleep on. Welcoming hosts, very friendly and lorinda an excellent cook as I had a Sunday roast one night which was amazing. Not much to not like. It equals the now shut hotel next door, I stayed at many times as a child.
- Augustine (5/5): Passable -
- Malcolm (9/5): Suited us perfectly - Host very welcoming breakfast excellent
- alib567 (10/5): 5 star - Amazing 👏 experience in my room top number 7 I sleep like a heaven after a long day walking on tbe beach i need it a good sleep 😴 bed is comfortable and it's so clean the hotel 🏨 spotless thanks very much I will highly recommend the owners amazing couple very helpful it.Aleida Chalmers
- Greener (9/5): Superb - Very good visit. Great breakfast very friendly staff Illfracombe is very hilly
- trishmilner (10/5): Lovely stay , welcoming and good location - Stayed overnight in Mar 25.
Room was lovely, everything you could need was provided , enjoyed evening meal and chatting to Paul & Lorinda who were very welcoming hosts and nothing was too much trouble. Good hearty breakfast Close to high street and not too far to the harbour. Would highly recommend
- Imperial-fire (10/5): Home from Home - Very warm and friendly welcome, Lorinda showed us to our room which had recently been decorated and explained everything we needed to know. Room was a lovely size with a separate dressing area and small fridge which was handy for fresh milk. The breakfast was lovely and they made sure we had a full vegetarian option. Paul was very welcoming and knowledgeable about the local area. The Hotel was very homely. Also free parking was available.
- Gaurav (6/5): Pleasant -
- Chelsea (8/5): - Owner is so lovely and very helpful, almost like a personal tour guide for us with plenty of suggestions for things for us to see and do. Very friendly!! Breakfast was beautiful! Room was clean, walking distance to beaches shops and restaurants. I’d stay again if visiting ilfracombe again.
- agnieszkap213 (10/5): Highly recommend this small hotel - I stayed at the Darnley Hotel with my family at the end of August. The owners are lovely people who made sure that our stay was enjoyable. I believe that we should support family-run businesses. The room was very clean with comfortable beds and home-made breakfast delicious.
- Matthew (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful building with lots of original features. Owners very friendly. Bed very comfortable
- P7099SXmelissah (10/5): Lovely after Tea - My boyfriend and I came to this hotel for an afternoon tea, We had a lovely welcome, a beautiful selection of sandwiches, warm scones with Jane and cream. Topped off with two yummy cakes. We couldn’t manage it all so one of the cakes were packed up for us to takeaway. I would highly recommend if in the area.
- 22jot22 (8/5): Good all round hospitality. - We stayed in a lovely room with an excellent view. The breakfast was all you could wish for - fruit, cereal, and a good choice of cooked food. The hotel is within walking distance of the town and harbour where there is plenty to see and a number of places to eat. Ilfracombe is a great place to stay if you want to explore the surrounding coast and countryside.
- Robert (8/5): Good all round - We stayed in a lovely room with an excellent view. The breakfast was all you could wish for - fruit, cereal, and a good choice of cooked food. The hotel is within walking distance of the town and harbour where there is plenty to see and a number of places to eat. Ilfracombe is a great place to stay if you want to explore the surrounding coast and countryside.
- Stephen (10/5): - Lovely hotel run by a really friendly couple.
- Karin (8/5): Nice Place - Very friendly stuff
- StephanieC2 (6/5): More like a guest house than a hotel. - The rooms was clean and comfortable. The manager responds to messages quickly. However, it felt more of a guest house than a hotel. In room tea/coffee things were in a shared hall, breakfast is only offered for a short window of time, and will not be changed. We had a 9am boat to catch and she could not provide breakfast before 8am. The interior was a bit of a mess, manager advising a water leak from the neighbor. And the small garden which would have been lovely to relax in had ash trays over flowing with butts.
- Kelly (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely spacious room for myself and three children. Beautiful view from the room. The breakfast was delicious and made especially for us.
- Lorraine (8/5): Good clean and friendly accommodation, very reasonably priced, would stay again. - Room was spotless, breakfast was freshly cooked. Staff were great. The area has seen quite a change since Covid and now looks quite deprived with lots of shops and businesses closed. However the staff and accommodation were great.
- mirandacQ8032QV (2/5): Cottages- tired & mouldy - We stayed in the cottages at the back - but the pictures are OLD - the Hotel reception/hall stinks of cats wee, so we did not want to eat there
The cottage was extremely tired - woodchip wallpaper peeling behind the many, many paint layers, probably to disguise the damp, as windows mouldy and rooms smelt strongly of mould. The carpet didn’t meet walls, bathroom had no hooks for towels, mouldy ceiling and electrics/plumbing exposed. No kick boards on kitchen cupboards, so there was space and ick under there… but the cupboards/fridge/washing machine were clean & proper bins for all recycling. Theres no outside space to sit (with your dogs) so you have to stay inside, which is darkened and chilled by overgrown/untended gardens/trees. We stayed because we couldn’t find a dog friendly alternative- so we had to make the best of it - absolutely would not stay again or recommend the cottages
- Lesley (10/5): A perfect stay - The warm welcome on arrival and departure. Really clean hotel and room. Lovely pillows and comfortable bed. Nice hot shower. Very quiet which was great for sleeping. Parking was a plus and on site. Breakfast and service was superb and nothing was too much trouble for Lorrinda. Paul welcomed us as we arrived in the car park. A really lovely couple. We enjoyed the atmosphere of the hotel and stayed in room 7, which had a wonderful view of the mountains, and at night a perfect view of the stars. Nothing to dislike.
- Katharine (8/5): Very good -
- NigelMonty (8/5): Relaxing break in a lovely part of the world - Stayed for 2 nights as part of a Buyagift package which included 2 course dinner and bottle of wine on the first night. Paul and Lorinda were lovely hosts and we enjoyed chatting with them throughout the stay. Arrived late on the first evening due to traffic issues and were exhausted but Lorinda made us very welcome, showed us to the room
on the second floor (note - no lift so 4 flights of stairs) and gave us time to unwind before cooking us a very enjoyable meal. Breakfast on both mornings was also lovely with a good selection. The room was spacious and clean and the bed was very comfortable with a good view out over the town. Paul and Lorinda both gave us some excellent recommendations for places to visit the next day and we had a lovely day exploring North Devon. Overall a lovely stay.
- Sightseer51789567318 (10/5): Very good clean hotel - Lorinda and Paul were friendly and welcoming. We had a beautiful room . The breakfast was really lovely and filling. Everything was clean and bed was comfy. We had room 9 and it was so big for 2 of us. There was a changing room as well. Really worth a stay. Thank you to you both
Loved daughter Lorinda roo
Met Bandit the dog and Luna too . Very friendly dogs.
- Ben (8/5): Very good - The breakfast was brilliant and the rooms were comfortable. The stairs were difficult with two young children, the toilet was also separate from the room which was a little inconvenient.
- Calin (9/5): Superb - Very quiet and peaceful hotel, short walk to the "Tunnel Beach " and town / harbor. Rooms are very clean and Lorinda and Paul are very nice people, friendly and helpful. Breakfast was great !
If you’re looking for a place to relax, I strongly recommend it !
- Safari491736 (10/5): Tasty afternoon tea - We had an afternoon tea here for 9 people. The sandwiches and cakes were lovely and fresh, tea and fresh coffee also. The hosts were very accommodating, very nice people. Our group had an area in the garden. Would recommend if you’re in the area.
- Daniel (9/5): Period house with lovely staff - Location and quietness
- 131lanieh (10/5): Excellent stay - Lovely little hotel ,we had the top floor family room and we really enjoyed it
Definitely recommend if you want to sleep well and relax

Many thanks and we’re see you again

- susanhK1794TF (8/5): Enjoyable stay at The Darnley - Our daughter's gave us a buyagift voucher for a 2 night stay with dinner. It had been some time since we'd visited North Devon so we chose The Darnley. The dinner on the first night was good and included a bottle of wine, breakfasts were also good. We stayed in the Darnley Suite, a spacious room which had a comfy king size bed, an added bonus was that the TV had Freeview Play so after a busy day out and about could come back and choose something good to watch. From the hotel it was possible to walk up onto The Torrs and pick up the coast path with lovely views, or a short walk into the town. Great walks at Lynton and Lynmouth were only a 35 min drive away.
- 645birthdaybash50 (10/5): Comfortable & Great Location - We Booked a two night stay at the Darnley Hotel, We arrived on Friday 26th April & checked in with lorinda & she kindly showed us to our room on the top floor, The room was very cosy & the bed very comfortable, It had its own on suite bathroom & was ideal for us after a day of visiting places that were on our bucket list, Take Tyme fish restaurant was one of them & will definitely be returning there when we are down again, We also visited Clovelly & will return there in the future, So the Darnley Hotel is in a great location for daily excursions
- L2995PLsusanm (10/5): Good weekend away - Brilliant place .lovely room. Host very friendly. Close to town. Dog friendly. Would stay again. Couldn’t fault the place. Be lovely if we stay again bar and restaurant open . Not the host fault was emailed to say she had broken arm. Would be lovely after a long day chill, out in hotel bar
- hanziec1978 (10/5): Lovely stay - We had a wonderful stay at The Darnley. Superb location and very comfortable room and bed. The hotel is dog friendly too. Loved the walkway down to the street, it felt like a secret passage and much easier than going up the very steep hill. Parking was also provided.
- Sherpa05988481480 (10/5): Nice weekend getaway - Had a two night stay and everything suited us. Location for the town is perfect with parking available on site. The pathway was a nice cut onto the main road and well lit when dark. The room was small but had all we needed for our stay. It was nice to have our room serviced each day. The hosts were great, providing information to help us with local restaurants and directions. All in all, we had a lovely weekend.
- U9808GKlisaf (8/5): Two night getaway - We went to the Darnley Hotel after receiving a two night getaway gift voucher for Christmas. Our room was on the ground floor by the front door, we were provided with a front door key aswell as a key to our room as the front door gets shut at 10pm. The room was of standard quality but very clean, it also had a ensuite, there was also plenty of room to put your clothes if you were to stay longer then 2 nights. There were few problems with the room, if you are of the larger build, like me and my husband. The bed was quite small for us both to fit in comfortably, and the shower cubicle was also very tight, you couldn't bend over to pick anything up if you dropped it in the shower, you could also hear people coming and going late at night as the door slams shut behind them. The lady on reception who greeted us and saw us go was very friendly, polite and came across very professional. It can be a bit tricky getting into the car park as its quite a narrow archway to try and get your car through especially if you have a large car.
Overall we had a lovely stay and would definitely come back, but would ask for a different room.
- Kevin (7/5): Good -
- Messenger (10/5): Exceptional - Nice clean hotel nice people that run the hotel Nothing
- David (8/5): Very good -
- J (10/5): Happy. - Large comfortable room, good beds, really good night’s sleep. Clean. Friendly. All good.
- Wendy (6/5): It was comfortable - Breakfast was good. Bed was very comfortable. Good there was parking. Bedroom was very small. Bathroom was very small. Location further than I expected from the sea front.
- Paul (8/5): It was a very nice short stay and we may come again for a longer stay. - The breakfast was fine, the location was just right, the parking was what we required and the owners are very nice people. The top floor room needs a small sink so that cups and spoons, etc. can be rinsed and the kettle can be filled easily - otherwise the bathroom had to be used. The room needs a power-point at worktop level for the kettle which had to be stood on the floor.
- Elspetha (10/5): Exceptional - The hosts were very friendly and informative - loved the cosy bar and garden area. Comfy bed and delicious breakfast- a great stay for our walk on the South West Coastal Path All good - would stay again.
- Desmond (9/5): Excellent service, clean and tidy with lovely breakfast. - Owners Paul and Lorinda go out of their way to be helpful. Because the room we booked needed an urgent repair we were put in a lovely suite on the top floor. There was a separate dressing room and small refrigerator. The breakfast is just the right size and there is a good choice of fruit, cereals etc. There is no lift, but the stairs are not too steep and are nice and wide. There isn't really a lounge, apart from a bar so it's not exactly family friendly, but would certainly suit couples.
- John (7/5): Good -
- Paul (7/5): Good -
- Gareth (7/5): Good -
- Ian (9/5): Superb -
- Antoine (8/5): Very good - Knowledgeable host's and spacious rooms grand setting, excellent breakfast. Very clean and most comfortable bed.
- Mcdonald (8/5): Hosts made us feel welcome nothing was to much bother g0od location - Breakfast was really good cooked to order
- Wardle (1/5): very poor considering the hosts seem to be well off. - The only thing good about this hotel is that it has a car park and short cut walk into the town. I must have drawn the short straw with my room like going back in time, old wood furniture, the bathroom cold tap was loose the sink plug rusty and the shower condiments tray was rusty. To top of all this, the fridge in the wardrobe kept me awake vibrating on and off all night long, the vegetarian breakfast was average and to my horror dogs in the dining room while guests are eating, very unhygienic. Kept awake with a fridge in the wardrobe vibrating all night and dogs in the dining room when guests are eating.
- Lynda (7/5): Good -
- Roderick (8/5): Very good -
- Oliver (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rita (10/5): Exceptional -
- Wendy (2/5): - bathroom toilet not screwed to the floor when you sat on it the toilet tilted, broken tiles on the floor ,tiles replaced with white sealant the rest of the floor had beige sealant. The blinds were broken and let in the light ,right through the night , spoke to owner was told it gets light early in the morning. dog in dining room owner petted dog and continued serving, requested well done toast was told cannot serve you well done toast as against health and hygiene ? Very miserable couple once try to say any thing is wrong, just reminds me of faulty towers , I can safely say it has been the worst hotel we have stayed in
- Phil (10/5): Exceptional -
- Julie (7/5): Comfortable family stay - The location was a little further out than we had anticipated but an easy drive. The hotel was clean and tidy and the couple running it were friendly. It was clean and actually really quiet (as in no noise from the street etc). We had a family room which was spacious for the three of us - the beds and pillows were really comfortable. The entrance to the property is TIGHT and parking a little tricky if you had a big car. We were all supposed to stay on one floor but we weren't yet the hotel wasn't full and no explanation was given. Breakfast was great but the time is short - only an hour and if you needed to leave early you would have to miss it.
- Tracie (8/5): Lovely room and good breakfast. - The room was spacious, lovely and very comfortable. We particularly liked that there was a fridge in the room. Great breakfast too. The climb to get to the hotel.
- Alan (9/5): Great hosts, good rooms and breakfast, good value, and I would return. - Cheerful, welcoming staff. Very close to the bits you want to visit, much to its favour as is its private car park.
Your legs need to work well, the resort is mighty hilly !
The owners have nicely updated a late Victorian building, the rooms and stairwell are very classily put together, The entrance and breakfast room are yet to receive their magic touch, just adequate.
- Claire (9/5): wonderful stay in a very convenient location with very hospitable hosts. we will come back. - the location and the helpfulness of the hosts nothing
- Holidaymaniac (7/5): Paul and Loretta are welcoming and friendly. Thay are gradually refurbishing the property and what has been done is appr - Friendly and ideal location in Ilfracombe could probably benefit from a little more development, but was clean and tidy.
- Sarah-jane (10/5): Great stay in a lovely property hosted by lovely people. - Very welcoming and clean in a quiet location but within walking distance of the harbour, beach and other local attractions.
- Lockie (7/5): Freindly hosts. Enjoyed breakfast. - The room was clean, plenty of room for chest of drawers and hanging clothes. Easy access to centre of town.
- Susan (8/5): We were made very welcomed for our stay. The sun shone through our stay which was a fab bonus. - Breakfast was offered as full English & a choice of other variations. Although on second day we were happy for a more continental. No complaints.
- Beverley (9/5): Superb - We were happy with our room and food.We found Paul & Lorinda very polite & helpful nothing was too much trouble. It was very quiet and relaxing which we enjoyed. Steep Hill to the Hotel as we both have arthritus in our knees. We were hoping to get a bus for some of our trips but used the car anyway
