Guest Reviews
- ariane (6/5): - It probably had better days because it’s a very big property. It is quite isolated and the Uber driver had a hard time to find it. But the staff is incredibly sweet and ready to go above and beyond for the customers. Such nice people. It was for one night because I couldn’t make my flight, and was so tired I didn’t realize how far from the airport it was. Food is good and abundant.
- jamesQ8068FG (10/5): Remember to try the food, especially if you like seafood! - I booked a last minute stay here for a week while waiting for my friend who got delayed flying out - what a great choice!
This lovely hotel is perfect for anyone looking for a relaxing break. Lovely grounds, good view of the lagoon and nice little bar/restaurant with lots of character. The hotel is a fair distance from the main road so no noisy traffic and very tranquil with some nice birds and wildlife. It has a really magical feel.
The staff are fantastic and made me feel welcome & safe from the moment I arrived. They are all very helpful and kind and definitely people who I would trust.
On to the food: I don't usually buy food at hotels as most of the time I find it bad value for money and often nothing special. Not the case here! All the food was absolutely amazing! Charitor and his assistant are fantastic cooks. I would recommend any dishes with seafood as they buy this fresh from local fisherman each morning. My favourite dish was the seafood pasta which tasted like a really good creamy Italian pasta but with a Sri Lankan twist (quite spicy), packed with lovely fresh seafood. Probably the best pasta I have ever eaten and the best thing I ate during my whole 2 month trip!
I stayed in one of the economy rooms. This was quite small and basic but clean and comfortable.
The only bad thing I would note is that I asked Charitor to book me a tuk-tuk when I left and the driver massively overcharged me. This was mainly my fault for not confirming a price but I just assumed it would be a reputable driver.
Overall, highly recommended and would definitely stay again! Thanks!
- Steinar (10/5): Outstanding hospitality and great food - Gamini (the owner) was so friendly and helpful with every need. He answered any question and did much more than you can expect from a hotel service. The staff in general was super friendly and polite and the food was great. Probably the best food in town! A quick ride to the surfkite Lagoon and right next to the bus station. Great experience and i would totally recommend this place!
- Pamela (6/5): - Overall we had a good experience at this hotel because the staff (Banda) was an awesome guy who looked after us so well!! The location is out of the way the menu was limited the wifi not great rooms are good no amenities though only soap no fridge or kettle however the property has a beautiful outdoor area with pool and we were really looked after well by the helpful staff. Value for what we paid was great.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Peaceful area with pool and restaurant. Very helpful and nice staff! Good food and good service
- matildab476 (8/5): Relaxation at its finest - We only spent one night at this hotel and the staff were super friendly and spoke good English. It was quiet when we stayed there but that did not make a difference to the quality of stay we had. The location by the lagoon was wonderful and the pool was calming. The food from the restaurant was great but nothing special and it is far away from the main centre making it more of a retreat from the busy city. If you’re looking for a relaxing day or two this is the place.
- huans1829 (10/5): Look no further, you have everything here! - This is a really Nice hotel for a cheap price.
The rooms are great, and so is the breakfast.
Dont forget to go out and respect their swimming pool as well, the pool is huge.
It is a bit out of Negombo town, but no worries.
At the hotel, there is a man that they call «The guy», and he will hook you up with his personal tuktuk driver if you are going somewhere.
Superb service, and a really great stay.
- thumbprints2018 (8/5): Quiet, friendly, relaxing hotel away from the busy town. - Hotel Lagoon Paradise is about a 20 minute taxi ride from the airport and on a thin strip of land between the sea and the large lagoon, off the main road and very peaceful. The pool offers a view over the inland waterway and you can watch the small fishing boats and hear birds. If you want a relaxing start or end to your trip I'd highly ecommend this hotel. The staff were excellent, as was the food. We travelled off season so had the place to ourselves for one day! But even if it was full, its small enough to be relaxing anyway. The room was basic but comfortable and clean. If you want your room to be cleaned you just have to request it. Comfy bed. If staying longer visit the fish market in Negombo, very busy and a lot going on. Our thanks go to the manager who was good enough to drop us off at the airport himself! Great service.
- catharinebm (6/5): spacious location, garden and large swimming pool. MODEST rooms.VERY helpful staff. - AS long as you don't mind asking politely and firmly for the bathroom to be cleaned thoroughly, an extra shet if need be, and that if the A/C doesn't work in your allocated room you can be moved to another, this hotel is correctly priced for a modest budget. We were transferred to the upstairs rooms which have a little balcony offering gorgeous sunrise views across the lagoon. It is quiet and the garden is large, so it is easy to feel almost as if it is your own. The large pool is a little acidic, but very clean. Food can take a little while, so order ahead especially if you would like the excellent traditional Sri Lankan curry...if they say hot, it WILL be!! We did a boat trip on the lagoon using someone recommended by the Hotel who was extremely knowledgeable and provided us with a marvellous breakfast of fresh fruits, served on the sandbar in a few inches of water. (shame about the rubbish in the magrove roots, but this is a general cultural lack of awareness we found all over Sri Lanka where we travelled.) We were allowed to bring in our own buffalo curd for dessert. Seer fish was excellent and very fresh. Very accommodating for dietary requirements(ie gluten, dairy free etc)
- ElJuanitaC (8/5): Reasonable room for a reasonable price. - I travel most of the time in and out Negombo,Kandy,Arugambay and some other places in Sri lanka so I haven't explore and stay much in the hotel. Located just beside the lagoon, half an hour drive from the airport-far from the busy city, eco-friendly with private pool, recommended for a budget traveler. I just had a nice dip in the pool and breakfast on my 2nd day. Very friendly staff they always look after you if you need anything and other information about sri lanka.
Note* Don't let you get fool by the taxi an tuktuk driver asif they are asking too much for the transportation esp. from the foreigners as they're not aware about the prices. So better ask before dealing with them- Charita will help you out regarding this matter.
- donaatdtsl (10/5): The epitome of "Relaxation" and "Simplicity" - This is located away from the bustling Hotel Road in Negombo towards the Lagoon side! Hence this is an ideal location for relaxation and comfort in a private simplistic setting... Easily accessible either on a Tuk Tuk, with your personal chauffeur or even if you're depending on public transport, 273 bus route directly gets here. The tropical garden looks so serene and my favorite was the relaxation, calm and quiet I experienced late evenings by the side of the lagoon. Just too beautiful to describe. This goes to show that one does not need a 5 star luxury hotel to immerse in an "experience connected with nature". Very homely and food too aligns with that. Recommend to anyone who's longing for a 'holiday getaway' or a day out with friends, family or loved ones.
- Verified traveler (4/5): In the middle of nowhere - Falling apart, mosquito ridden. Poor value for the Negambo area. Couldn't get out of there fast enough.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Bad image and location also the strange is some ro - Very bad experience that lead me to return back on second day after my arrival.
- rabela2016 (6/5): Away from the busy city - This was the first hotel we stopped after a total of 16 hours travelling and we spent one night here. The few people working there were very nice to us. Dinner was very good as well and the relaxed atmosphere was all we needed before starting all the adventures :)
The only negative feedback, but unfortunately most of the hotels in Sri Lanka do so is the fact that they did not book any room for our driver/ guide, he had to find somewhere where to eat something and sleep.
- Clara (6/5): OK hotel men ganska avlägset andra bekvämligheter - Hotellet var OK men det var ganska avlägset samt väldigt få gäster vilket gav känslan av att det var lite öde..
- susanhipperson (8/5): a great budget hotel - For the price this is a real find (we had a budget room that was clean and comfortable). In a quiet area away noisy central Negombo, but on a main bus route (273) that will get you there in 20 minutes for 26 rupees. Great pool in tropical garden. Also excellent hairdresser 200 yards down main road towards Negombo. We did not eat in the hotel but in the Ziegler cottage restaurant on opposite side of main road. Very pleasant and helpful hotel staff.
- Annika (10/5): - Mysigt ställe!
- nancylynnm2015 (8/5): Wonderful visit - We spent 2 days here and enjoyed it very much. Christophe is a wonderful host and went out of his way to accommodate our party. The meals were freshly prepared, so expect a little wait to be served, but worth it. There is a full bar with a lot of choices. The property is beautifully maintained and very lush. The pool is clean and refreshing. Would love to stay much longer.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely people who couldn't help more. Area is not near anything local so not great for long stay but fantastic for stop off after airport.
- rapr725 (4/5): expensive and not that great - For what you got, this was a lot of money. The food was pretty bad, felt really guilty when we didn't finish it because they make it specially for you. The rooms were nothing special. the staff were friendly and the view when we woke up was good but you can only see it from the garden, not from the rooms.
- Bimbi1991 (10/5): “Lovely & Luxurious” - 1st August 2014 we have stayed at Lagoon paradise & have been blown away with amazement. The rooms are very spacious and modern. The hotel itself is stunningly beautiful.
The staff is so attentive and helpful. Every single one of was happy and Smiling when serving. Their exceptional service made us to feel like home away home. Nothing is too much trouble for them. Special thanks to “Charitha”. Quality of the facilities are well matched with high quality service standards.
The pool is humongous & extraordinary with well provided facilities around.
The setting is stunning although the beach isn’t there to enjoy. But we loved the change. Recommend boat excursions as they are quiet reasonably priced and worth a try. The quality of the food and service is superb and good value for money. It’s a Sea food heaven!!!
- 279tarak (8/5): Lovely and Relaxing - We actually booked this hotel by mistake we had intended to book one on Negambo beach, when we got there my husband wanted to leave as he thought it was too isolated. The kids were tired and we decided to stay the night. The room as very comfortable and had a balcony with a great view. The grounds are kept up very nice and we really enjoyed the pool. The staff was very helpful and considerate. Breakfast was wonderful we tried both Sri Lanka and western style. We ended up staying a second night. We took the local bus into town one day to do some shopping. It as a perfect place to end our Sri Lankan trip. Very peaceful and relaxing.
- Kresten (4/5): Dum beliggenhed - Meget skuffende oplevelse.
- TiborBH (2/5): Avoid this hotel - First of all, this isn't a budget hotel. One night without breakfast, and a cup of coffee, costs 73 €, if you book a AC room online. The room is not clean, especially the toilets and shower area. Bed is uncomfortable. There is mold in the room which doesn't allow you to breath properly. Bugs and geckos are present in your room. There is no Wi Fi in the room, only around pool area, but there also not all the time. Pool area is actually the only good thing about this place, but it's not worth the money you pay.
Hotel is isolated, there are no shops and restaurants in walking distance. If you want to go to the city, tuck tuck is 5-6 €. And it takes about 20 minutes. Beach close to hotel is dirty.
Staff is OK, but somehow I think they are aware, they can only get some guests over online booking. At the day I was there, I think I was the only guest.
Do yourselves a favor and don't book this hotel online. If you think this is a proper place for you, go there first, and than decide.
- Michael_Jacobi2013 (8/5): Great hospitality close to airport - The location, with the Negombo lagoon on one side and the ocean a short walk to the other, is very nice and only a 20 minute taxi ride from airport. It is a good base for beginning or end of trip. Colombo is some distance to the south, but Negombo with its bustling fish market is a 15 minute tuk tuk ride to the north. The grounds are well kept and the pool is very nice. The bar restaurant area is lovely and the only place where wifi works. Cold beverages and decent food await. The Sri Lankan dishes were good, the Western dishes a bit bleak and overpriced. The eastern breakfast was our favorite. The staff is attentive and friendly. All in all a good spot with good value and facilities. The rooms are reasonably priced for the urban location, and suitable for budget travelers.
- M (8/5): 15 minutes from airport on the shores of the lagoo - Well managed and good staff. Food was good and I highly recommend the eastern breakfast. Rooms are basic and are best for adventure travelers, backpackers, budget travelers, etc.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Relaxing experience next to lagoon - Staff was very friendly and attentive. Food and drink was great and location and view superb. Rooms are simple and may disappoint those looking for amenities, soft towels and new decor, but are fine for backpacker, budget travelers and adventure travelers like me. Only 15 minutes from airport.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Too excluded and lack of facilities - Rooms should come with airconditioning included in the price. This is not a cold environment, why give option? The bed spring is too soft and bad for elderly people and those with back problem. I had to pay for the rooms inspite of being away for three days.
- Cassie505 (8/5): Budget Bliss - When booking a hotel that is in the budget price range you have to accept that you will get what you paid for. This hotel far exceeded these expectations.
The staff were friendly if not a little slow at restaurant service and made myself and my friend feel very welcome. For the most part we had the hotel to ourselves which meant we had a little spot of uninterrupted paradise by the pool most days.
The food quality is by far the best aspect of this hotel after its well maintained surroundings. It was so good that we chose to have dinner at the hotel most nights so that we could sample the stews, curries and fish dishes on the extensive list. No meal disappointed. Although if you're not a fan of eggs then breakfast may disappoint.
The rooms are basic - but paying the price that we did I wouldn't have expected luxury. We had a ground floor room that was accessed via a path on one side or through the gardens on the other. The chairs outside our room meant we could spent evenings sat outside with a bottle of wine overlooking the beautiful surroundings. The sheets were clean, as was the bathroom. My only recommendation to the cleaning staff would be to de-scale the shower head and taps to improve the water flow.
I would definitely stay at this hotel again. They arrange airport transfers, call a tuk tuk for you if you want to head in to the town and even arranged a private driver for a day trip to the elephant park 2 hours away.
All in all it was a lovely week away from reality.
- BrendaC789 (8/5): Enjoyed my stay here - Travelling to see friends who have moved to Sri Lanka and we decided to spend a few days here. We received a warm welcome and found the place value for money. We enjoyed a candlelit drink after dinner in the garden overlooking the lagoon.
- judybaker67 (8/5): judy b - I recently stayed at this hotel with some friends, we were shocked to read the bad reviews, we found the hotel to be pleasant, the rooms were nice and clean, the food was good and ths staff were very polite, and it was lovely to stroll around the well kept gardens and we would certainly come again.
- 936pamn (10/5): Sweet friendly staff - We had a lovely 2 night stay at Hotel Lagoon Paradise. We were treated like royalty by the staff who couldn't do enough to help us even when my husband found out that his aftershave had broken and leaked onto everything in his suitcase, the housekeeping staff took the suitcase away and several pairs of shoes and washed them all out for us. We were sad to say goodbye and want to thank everyone we met at there for looking after us with us warmth and care. We hope you enjoy the tin of Scottish shortbread we left for you. Warmest Regards and hope one day to visit again Pam and Dennis from Kilmarnock
- Nick (2/5): Ganz schön unverschämt! - Es ist einfach nur frech, diese Bude für dieses Geld anzubieten bzw. zu verkaufen.
- sebcoat (2/5): No no no, never again - Everything has 20 years without real maintenance in the room, it works again but don't know how. My regret is not to have taken a picture of the TV, never saw a such tiny bad quality TV, even in URSS you could not have seen it. Flights noise all night. Bad beds composed of one fitted sheet and a too short bed sheet, gecko on the wall, poor shower to turn on before using... Hopefully the Staff is very helpfull as often in Sri Lanka, swimming pool's OK.
