Guest Reviews
- EFREN (10/5): - Cabin like boutique hotel feeling, cozy
- Lorraine (8/5): - We liked our stay at the Arenal Montechiari Hotel. It was different from a usual hotel because of the small, individual houses.
Positive things about the houses are ...they have air conditioning, are clean, have a room safe for valuables, have a TV, and the breakfast is adequate. Every unit has a small porch with two chairs on it. The price for staying there is very reasonable, and the grounds are pretty with flowers. The staff was friendly and helpful.
Negative things are... the small houses are very rustic. You can see light between the boards on the door and there was a gap under the door. Despite that, we did not see any insects in the unit. Our house had two beds that were tightly squeezed into the room. There wasn't a chair for lounging. The small houses are very close together and conversations can be heard from people outside.
- Rodrigo (8/5): - Solo le falta tener Wifi en los cuartos
- Julia (10/5): - Beautiful! Large shower, comfy bed, adorable towel arrangements everyday by maid service, breakfast included! WiFi not available in the rooms so you can disconnect, but is available where breakfast is served so you can map out your day. We loved being close to everything we wanted to see. An adventure of a lifetime!
- R (10/5): - This Arenal Montechiari is a great deal for price conscious travelers it’s an older property and a little rustic, but very clean with exceptional service. It’s perfect for tourists in that it’s walking distance to many restaurants in downtown La Fortuna. Almost all of the local sightseeing activities offer shuttles to and from the hotel. Great breakfast too! No wifi in rooms but is available in reception and the restaurant. Would definitely stay again.
- Raul B (10/5): - The staff was very polite and courteous. The breakfast was awesome. I had a great time. I will come back again.❤️
- Diana (10/5): - Fantastic property! Close enough to La Fortuna activities, yet away from the busy streets in downtown. Breakfast was great, more than many other hotel options. 2 days of rain so we didn't have volcano views but our stay with our daughters was great!
- Kevin (10/5): - Great
- Veronica (6/5): - This property is ecological. I love waking up and hearing the birds. The only downfall is the internet service, which can only be used in the reception area. There was no shampoo or conditioner, only soap. Pool towels are given at the reception desk.
- Rajesh (10/5): - It's just a beautiful place and yet in town
- Brianne (8/5): - Loved our stay and would come again. Breakfast was the same every morning. TV didn’t work. Need a garbage can in the room. Need hooks for towels in bathroom.
- Melissa (8/5): Lovely place good price - The property is very beautiful the plants on the property are gorgeous. The place feeds the birds in the morning so there are always plenty of birds to see right outside your door. The staff were helpful and friendly. We were told they do not have queen beds so we were given a villa with two double beds.
- Matt and Lindsay (10/5): - Highly recommend
- Matt (10/5): - Check in was super quick, everything was laid out and ready to go upon arrival. The property is extremely well maintained, quiet and serene. The security guard does regular walks of the proterty which was very comforting for a young family. Had a wonderful meal at Restaurante Fortunena. Service was amazing, have never seen food come so quickly.
Did the Mistico Bridges, it was an unbelievable experience.
The entire experience is highly recommended.
- Barry (6/5): - No room amenities, cups, coffee maker, internet
- Haris (10/5): - Our stay was confortable.
- Xiaoying (8/5): - Everything was good except no WiFi in the rooms
- Robert (10/5): - For the price it was a fantastic hotel. If they just spent a little bit money it would be an amazing hotel. Overall I'm satisfied
- Marco (6/5): - No internet in rooms
- Niranjan (6/5): - Honestly i feel they should provide wifi in each room. For Wifi you need to go to the reception area or the restaurant area.
The rooms are small for a family of 4 but very clean. The Washrooms were good and spacious. They could provide a place to place our soap and shampoos.
- mike (10/5): - nice, semi close to town, quiet, nice pool area, cute cabin type rooms, great breakfast, great staff, like wilderness next to the city.....
- Lillyana (8/5): - It was ok, not extraordinary service but average. The surrounding areas were pretty thoug.
- Tom (8/5): - Beautiful property, nice and clean.
Only negative would be the beds werent very comfortable.
- Ken (8/5): - Was a bit on the rustic side but clean enough. Very beautiful grounds and awesome views of Arenal Volcano.
- Thomas (6/5): - They have a pond like area not maintained.
Electrical panel main box was exposed, no covers. I stayed in cottage 42. Lights need upgrade to more brightness inside home. Need trimming of leaves at entrance.
- Gail (8/5): - Beautiful garden setting just outside town
- Teagan (10/5): - We had a great stay here. The rooms were clean and had everything you need, including a/c. The property itself is very lush and beautiful. It is very walkable. You can take a short walk to La Fortuna where you can find any type of food you desire. I loved the area and my stay at Arenal Montechiari.
- jose (2/5): - worse service
- Carole (10/5): - Beautiful property grounds with a beautiful view of Arenal Volcano. Would stay here again.
- Roger (6/5): - The bad......The lights were dim, she shower fluctuated a lot without moving the setting. Pillows and beds were worn out, not enough pool chairs, no place to set toiletries or clothes.
The good......people cleaning everywhere, pool was clean, sheets were clean, conveniently located, good breakfast, a/c worked well.
- Karla (8/5): - Great location and GORGEOUS facilities!
- Susan (10/5): - Super comfortable and charming place to stay. Beautiful gardens with many birds in the morning. Lovely breakfast. Great place to stay!
- Chirag (6/5): - The property is old. The bathroom is small. Shower was good but the toilet and sink were finicky - had to operate them just right so they didn't drip. We were assigned a cabin right next to the heavily trafficked area so got noisy at times. There were empty cabins away from the reception area but not sure why we were not given those. Breakfast was good. Wifi only works near the reception and breakfast area.
- FRANÇOIS (8/5): - Well located, good price
- Sylvie (10/5): - -the staff at the reception were very friendly
-the grounds were amazing, view of the Arenal Volcano was awesome
-easy walk to the downtown area with wonderful restaurants and shops
- Irena (8/5): Nice hotel, beautiful grounds - Very nice hotel close to the city center.
Only downside was no wi-fi in the rooms.
- Jill (10/5): - Hotel is in a great location. Close to town for easy walking but far enough to not hear town noise. Staff are great and very helpful. Rooms were clean and comfortable. No wifi in cabins. Breakfast was good.
- Charis (10/5): - This place is beautiful and the staff was friendly. It's walking distance to the town square. The rooms have air conditioning which is nice because it can be so hot outside so nice to walk into a cool room. My son loved the pool. Breakfast was yummy and served buffet style. It also changed slightly each morning. The staff even showed us the ice machine which was nice to fill up our water bottles. I found this place by a recommendation from my friend and I would recommend.
- David (4/5): - The check in was terrible. The guy was rude and it seemed we inconvenienced him. There is no wifi in the rooms and you have to walk in the rain to the restaurant or reception for service. The shower pressure was not strong and the toilet did not flush. To make matters worse my wife was bitten all over the body.. we assume bed bites.
Overall poor experience.
- Nery (2/5): - The pool couldn’t be used, the wifi didn’t work, tv didn’t work, the place was noisy due to construction starting before 7am, the room was not ready at 3 pm and they only provided 2 towels for 4 people, the toilet back up, we got move to a different smaller room and there was not running water after 9am. I do NOT recommend this place to anyone. I wish I could get my money back.
- Ludivine (6/5): - Overall nice but just getting extra toilet paper whenever we would run out was always difficult.
Wi-Fi is not available in the rooms - only at the breakfast area.
Breakfast food was ok but not great quality and always the same.
Nice gardens and view on the volcano
- Chris (6/5): - The office staff were friendly and helpful, however the overall rating was bought down by the breakfast staff who seemed unhappy and disinterested.
- Katherine (10/5): - Our stay here was one of the highlights of our 9 days in Costa Rica! The young man who checked us in was so nice and helpful! He had great recommendations that helped maximize our time there, and he even called the rental car agency to get their exact location and then put that in my GPS for me.
The bungalows were charming and peaceful, and the breakfast was authentic, with enough choices to satisfy our group of 8. The busyness and action of the town was a short walk away, but the property was set back and surrounded by trees, giving it a very relaxing and peaceful ambiance. Watching the rain fall from the rocking chairs on the front porch in a jungle like environment was the perfect ending to an 'on the go' and busy vacation!
- Esteban (10/5): Beautiful stay - Beautiful grounds and excellent staff helpful and going above and beyond
The hotel was clean and wiry a beautiful view of the volcano and staff and owners were spectacular
- Jenny (10/5): - Arenal volcano view, the area , walking distance to restaurant and bars, the nature surrounding it. We were looking to stay in a cabin but were a bit hesitant (safety) reasons. However, this hotel worked out amazing !
- Cathy (4/5): - Beds are very hard and no in room wifi and tv did not work and no hot water
- Jennifer (10/5): - Rustic rooms with good linens and furniture to play cards/eat as a family. The air conditioner was in good condition and so was the fridge.
We appreciated the staff who were all very friendly. Loren at the reception even helped us order pizza to our room one evening. This is the one stay where we did not have ants in our room or bathroom. It was clean but the walls could use a good wash.
The grounds here are a real plant and bird lovers dream. The volcano view is great on the rare occasion that the sky is clear.
Breakfast is sufficient although we wish the restaurant was open for additional meals although the ten minute walk to town was enjoyable and very very safe. Even after dark.
- Daniel (10/5): - Nice, clean cabin, even nicer people
- David (10/5): - Beautiful sunset, easy check in, helpful owners, and free breakfast omelette made it order. Can’t conplain for $50.
- Melissa (6/5): Not as good as we expected - We were never told what time breakfadt was served, nor was it in any of the rules or info.
We were really surprised after the advertizing of free Wi-fi, that it could only be used in the office!! NO internet anywhere else.
Then, the light outside our room shone thru the window, keeping our room lite up at night, so bright I could read!
Lastly, we had trouble getting breakfast because their tour buses crowded the dining room, taking all the tables AND creating a long service line. People were in line ahead of us with dirty plates, indicating they had already gotten food once, and we still hadn't even gotten any.
- Verified traveler (6/5): It was okay …. Staff was nice… beautiful view - The view was spectacular and beautiful. They have an amazing view the Arenal Volcano. The staff was very polite and friendly. I think they need to update and upgrade. They first cabin we were placed in didn’t have a working TV, adequate plumbing or a functioning shower door. We had to demand to be moved but after that the stay was better. The breakfast was delicious they deserve a 10 out of 10. They have WiFi but it only works at the office and cafeteria area.
- David (8/5): - Lovely property with beautiful gardens and many (loud) birds in the early morning. The rooms are spacious, the beds comfortable. While the garden has a great mountain view, none of the actual rooms do as stated on the website - they are all facing each other down rows of pathways. Wifi isn't available in the rooms, only reception and restaurant. Breakfast was a buffet with reasonable choice of pancakes, eggs, sausage, toast and fruit. A nice place to stay on a quiet road, but very easy walk right into the centre of La Fortuna.
- David (8/5): La Fortuna get away - Felt some of the bathroom amenities could be improved. Lighting in the bathroom definitely needs updating. Toiletries were a little lacking. Staff was friendly, helpful and professsional.
- Florencia (10/5): - This property delivered in all aspects. It was quiet, beautiful gardens, and cozy cabin. The staff were accommodating to some small requests we had. It is close enough to town to walk, which is very convenient, and the walk felt safe even at night. Free breakfast was convenient, though after 5 days we did get a little tired of having the exact same options; this is just a minor point though. Overall I would recommend this hotel.
- Ivor (8/5): - Fantastic location but Arenal was clouded in so don’t always expect to see it. Town of La Fortuna (5 min walk) was very touristy and expensive
Facility was lovely but weird bed configuration meant you had to climb over the bed when getting into room which were great separated cabins.
The biggest issue was the internet didn’t reach rooms but only lobby and restaurant so did emails in the lobby !!! They should invest in extending the range.
- Alexis (10/5): Lovely cabins great service - Lovely hotel with little cabins on a beautiful property. Great birds and even s sloth on the property breakfast is traditional and good. Service was great. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. It’s walking distance to the town and restaurants but perfectly far away to feel like your in nature. Would highly recommend.
- GREGORY (8/5): - Good night stay and close to everything. Great Staff and good breakfast.
- Adam (8/5): - The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. The views and continental breakfast were great. The beds were comfortable and the air conditioning worked well. You do start to hear alot of nature throughout the night which made it difficult to sleep and there is no wi-fi in the cabins. If you are looking to unplug, this place is amazing.
- Jessica (4/5): - This is actually a lovely property, quiet and relaxing in the shadow of the Arenal Volcano. My issue is that I was double charged for my stay at the end of March. I was a single traveller booked for 3 nights. On my second day, the hotel staff asked that I do them the favour of relocating for a night to another hotel close by. They offered the compensation of a night for this. I agreed, packed up my stuff and walked over to the other hotel, (it was almost the same property and apparently owned by a sibling). Then i packed up my stuff again and relocated back to the Montechiari.
I had to check out early as I had an early transit. The receptionist hadnt arrived yet, so it was the owner (as I was told) who checked me out. I was told there was an additional charge of 90 dollars (USD) that I had to pay. I paid in cash but she couldnt find the reciept book. And then my transportation arrived and i had to leave. I had pre-paid through Expedia, including all taxes and I had not outstanding balances.
I tried to solve this with Expedia, but after weeks, Expedia was told there were no additional charges.
My best guess is that I was charged the fee for the other hotel room and for doing Montechiari a favour when they overbooked.
Its unfortunate, it could have been a great experience, but it was soured by the hotel's staff/owner trying to cash grab.
Just a cautionary thing to be warned about when booking with this hotel.
- Nick (10/5): - This property was more than I expected as it was one of the cheapest rooms I could find on Expedia. The breakfast was actually good quality food, something I looked forward to each morning. Way better than the hotel breakfasts that I am used to in the US. The rooms were private and cute, although the rooms are standalone cabins, the buildings are made of a thin plywood/veneer so you can hear people outside if they are there and there is no insulation. The AC is moderately weak, so if it is hot outside, and the AC Is on inside, it will still be hot inside. We caught a red eye and stayed here the folllowing night, we tried to take a nap during the day in our room and it was too hot to nap. However, this property is perfect if you adventure during the day and simply come back at night to sleep as it cools off dramatically .
- Teresita (10/5): - Quick check in. Friendly staff. Clean rooms and NO bugs! Cold showers though 😂
- Tracey (10/5): - The property is absolutely beautiful. Covered with gorgeous landscaped flowers and trees. Wish we had more than one night!
- Joshua (10/5): - The property was within walking distance to the city, which made it easy to access additional activities in the area. The breakfast was wonderful! The room itself was clean and comfortable.
- Efrain (6/5): - Good location. WIFI was not available in our room just common areas. They washed our clothes but some of our clothes went missing.
- maricel (8/5): - It was good in general .. we stayed two night but never changed towels and provide toilet papers
- Gaura (10/5): - Great views of the Arenal Volcano, exactly like the pictures! the hotel is a very short walk from the main town which is also great.
- Harry (10/5): Great stay - Great customer service, friendly, and cute accommodation. Free breakfast as well in the morning.
- VICTOR (8/5): - Located in quiet neighborhood
- Stefan (10/5): - Great family run business and very friendly
- Amit (10/5): Legendary - This is a perfect place for those who need relax time and to have all the conditions for see sights and the area
- Nigah (10/5): Amazing staff! - The owner of the hotel were just amazing! They gave us so much attention and went above and beyond to help us. The owner even gave us her whatsapp to contact her and ask any questions we had. She also let us get back to the hotel after we checked out to enjoy the pool in the afternoon of a sunny day. Just wounderful stay!
- Yann LE (10/5): - Great stay and very helpful hosts
- ANTHONY (10/5): - The serenity, the peace and quiet is exactly what we needed! The location of this beautiful place was a reasonably situated walking distance from the town with restaurants and shops along the walk. We truly enjoyed our stay!
- Shelley (10/5): - Quaint little cabins set in a beautiful tropical setting
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The management is so welcoming... So accommodating. I would love to stay there again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The staff was amazing and went above and beyond to make sure we had a great stay.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Cute pool with "Volcano". When the sky is clear you can get a nice view of Arenal Volcano. The cabanas are pretty cute. I wish the staff were a little helpful when we asked questions.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - This hotel was partially under construction and while there was one pool that was open for business it didn't really feel like a spot we could hang out comfortably. Ultimately we decided we were looking for a more resort feel and decided to go stay somewhere else for the rest of our stay. We only ended up staying here for one night. The staff were incredibly helpful and very friendly!
- Ernesto (10/5): Lifetime experience - Everyone is super attractive and wonderful.
Great customer service, friendly and helpful.
I highly recommend this hotel.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely place with private cabins. Gorgeous property with a swimming pool. A little walk outside of town makes it perfect - the town itself is very noisy, and at the hotel we had the peace and quiet. Breakfast is ok.
- Cesar Augusto (4/5): Arenal one day trip - WiFi was confirmed by hotels.com but the unit (#20) did not have any access nor signal.
Nice 32’ plasma TV but no remote control so no option to use it
Breakfast staff was great but food selection wasn’t
Not a good price / benefit balance.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Trip to Arenal - Everything was very clean and staff friendly. The lighting in the rooms is very dim and minimal. Room is sparse but comfortable.
- Jennifer (6/5): Not bad for the price - The check in process was easy. Staff was very helpful in every way. Staff even pointed out a sloth in the tree. The room was clean, however there are no wash clothes and the beds are semi hard. The separate villas was nice especially for couples. The founds was beautifully landscape. If you are looking for a place to sleep only with family, this place is perfect for you.
- Andy W. (10/5): Perfect location! - Absolutely beautiful!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Very tropical feel, beautiful flora everywhere. Swim up pool was empty but the other pool was beautiful. No need to swim there when there's waterfalls and hot springs nearby. Staff keeps the "cabins" clean but its very basic. Need to ask for hairdryer if needed but its available. AC also needs to be turned off to save electricity but otherwise its works fast. Bathrooms are big but no AC, vented windows. Wii only works near front office and eating patio. The bonus was seeing the resident sloth actively eating in the tree at night.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Service was fantastic - Great staff who went above and beyond for us. They repeatedly helped me with my activities , laundry, dining. This was a good value and the best of the 3 places that I stayed in costa rica.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The property was cute, definitely nothing fancy. The rooms were ok but the lights in the bathrooms were far from adequate. We stayed there one night and I don’t think I’d stay more than that.
- AMO (8/5): - I loved the individual cabins that were complete with covered porches. The landscaping and the grounds were beautiful! The open air restaurant had a lot of character. The only thing that we didn’t like was the overhead lighting in the room. With just one tube high overhead, it was really dim!
- Robin (10/5): - It was a lovely property and the owners/managers couldn't have been more helpful.
Gorgeous setting, close to town, great views of the volcano. I look forward to going back
there again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - These were great little individual cabins in a park like setting.Karol checked us into our cabin and gave us all the information required for a three day stay including booking tours for us. Our first evening she spotted 2 sloths for us which was amazing. Loved this little hidden gem of a place.
- Fran (8/5): - It's ok, just full of group tourists. Breakfast feels like a production chain.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - This collection of chalets was perfect for an overnight stay. The rooms were basic and the beds somewhat uncomfortable but ok for a short stay. The gardens were great and the views of Arenal spectacular.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Really quaint individual cabins that feel like you’re in the wilderness, yet are only a few minutes walk from downtown. A great view of Arenal volcano just outside your door as a bonus!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great place, very recommended. Very clean and great service, great place to introduce yourself in costa rica
- Verified traveler (6/5): Average stay - This place was decent. The restaurant is nothing spectacular. The WiFi only works if you are sitting in/outside reception and not in the rooms. Staff was nice. Town is very tourist oriented and be wary of locals overcharging. I stayed here four nights and wished I was only here two.
- Sherie (8/5): Volcano base, La Fortuna - Property at back of town 5 mins walk from centre, so quiet as not on main drag. Large well presented casita with outside seating. Lovely staff. Secure. Beautiful garden area well set out. Only slight downside not very noise proof so other guests can disturb walking past .best to get the first or last row bungalow as not backing on to another one. Breakfast is great and you can watch wild birds feeding from the Rancho . Organised trips go from here too. Plenty of info in the office . We have stayed here 3 times now so recommend. Town centre is very noisy at night / all night so we come here for peace.beds have memory topper and comfortable. Safe in room.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Bed was uncomfortable and mattress was covered by a single bottom fitted sheet which easily came loose.
Windows did not open. With such nice fresh air outside why make guests use A/C to stay cool? Ridiculous. Perhaps this is because cabins are placed near one another and so noise may be a concern?
- Valerie (10/5): - Great Hotel to be close to town
- John (10/5): Beautiful - This was a very nice hotel. It was about 3 blocks from the main streets of Fortuna. The grounds and flora were amazingly beautiful. Very good typical Tico breakfast each morning. We needed three beds and the room fit us all very nicely. Pool could be a little bigger and it would be nice if there were more than just four lounge chairs there.
