Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We were at no.55, which initially i was a bit concerned about. However it was lovely, we had a large room at the front. Noisy in Fri night but ok for the rest of the time. You are right in the old town afterall!
- r (10/5): - Perfektes ruhiges Hotel in zentraler Lage
sehr nette Betreuung
- Paul (8/5): - Centrally located in downtown Funchal. Veronica was very helpful and always pleasant. She made suggestions on things to do and how to get around. The area is very busy at night and I could hear some early morning activity in the street below at times. It would not stop me from staying here again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nice hotel in good location - Quiet room with good air-con. Breakfast OK but fruit selection tired
- Larry (10/5): Great little Hotel! - Right on the most picturesque street in the Old Town complete with a multitude of bars, cafes, restaurants and bakeries within a couple of minutes of walking. A respite from the high rise international chain venues. And Veronica is the best host ever!
- JohnM (8/5): - Central location great base for exploring the island
- Lenore (8/5): Lovely Veronica! - Friendly cheerful staff. Very amenable and accommodating.
- Lesley (10/5): Nice hotel very close to everything! - We were not in the main part of the hotel but in a lovely big room further up the street, nearer to the centre of Funchal. When we stepped outside we were right in the heart of the bars and restaurants in the old town and a very short walk to the sea and the centre of town. Don't know what it's like in mid-summer but even though we were in the thick of it, the street sounds didn't bother us.
- Dustin (2/5): Not as expected - I am usually very positive about hotels but this is my worst experience so far. There was no check-in, we had to ask the store next door to give us the room keys. We tried several times that day and the following days to get in contact with the staff but there was no one at the desk each time. They forgot to put the remote for the air conditioning in the room so the first days were super hot, and when we finally met the lady at the desk (on our last night there) they turned the AC on for us and water and ice leaked into the room the entire night. Also, bring earplugs because it's very loud outside and it's hard to sleep through the noise. All in all I would not recommend this place to any of my friends.
- Bubi (8/5): Nice room in the center of Funchal - My room was a 2 minutes walk down the road, away from the reception and where the breakfast was served. In the very center of the restaurants and bars. Despite of this busy location, there was no noise and the room was quiet. Very close to the teleferico, that takes you up to monte. Also a few minutes walk from the Marina. Facilities were very clean. The bakery next door makes delicious bread for the included breakfast.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nice hotel close to the beach - Great location, very helpful staff, spacious and clean room. Definitely recommend this!
- Pietro (4/5): Nice hotel but too noisy - Wide room but we haven't slept for three days because a pub in fron our room opened until 2 am and then , the bakery at ground floor opened at 5 a.m by playing music and songs for a better work (sigh). If you close the window you can't sleep because it's too hot. We asked to change rooms and the staff has sent us to another residence (residence casa do lado or something like it at number 55 of the same street) much poorer than the mariazinha , with shower not working well and loosing water, but quite calm, at least. Breakfast poor, only the bread was ok (taken from the same bakery above described!).
- Claire (10/5): Great location near the ocean - Very friendly and helpful staff. Got there early but were checked in by Maria.
Veronica was so helpfull with any questions we had.
- Marja (8/5): Winter holiday at Madeira - Veronica in reception was exceptionally friendly and helpful. We were situated in 'another buildign 100 meters away, breakfast in mainbuilding. Room was small and window to backyard but nice and exceptionally clean. Situated in walking distance of everything in Funchal
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Sehr gute Lage Super freundliches und hilfsbereites Personal Alles sehr sauber und gepflegt Fühlte mich sehr wohl da
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great Hotel with unbeatable access to Funchal - This cosy little hotel have a super friendly & helpful staff, very comfortable and clean rooms (beds are nice but a bit hard) and an excellent location close to "everything". All in all a convenient 4 star hotel, situated right in the very heart of the cosy and pleasant Old Town area with plenty of all sorts of restaurants & bars in the area. The hotel is also very close to other major Funchal cultural attractions such as the cable cars, the CR7 museum, Farmers Market and the Electrical Museum e.g. A taxi station is within a stone throw and the main bus station is very close as well. A bus from the renamed Cristiano Ronaldo Airport stops nearby (stop #4 "Mercado" ; 200 meters away) and is €8 return (€5 single). However, please be aware that the hotel is above a nice bakery which opens early in the morning and can be a little bit disturbing. Reward is amongst other fresh bread for breakfast in a nice breakfast room with some nice selections. Around the corner from the hotel is the small but trendy Revolucional Bar where the owners will look after you. Highly Recommended!
- A (8/5): central location - Central location in old town Madeira , within easy reach of restaurants, cable car, seafront ,bus station, fruit and veg market.
Veronica and her team were lovely . They were helpful, very willing to give advice and information, book tours and generally made my stay memorable.
I would recommend staying here to any one who asks.
- Colin (10/5): Near to All Amenities - This is a superb hotel staffed by lovely people who do everything that they can to make your stay enjoyable.
- Dave (8/5): interesting part of town - Hotel located in an interesting part of town (old town).the staff VERY obliging and cleanliness was good.
A bit of a challenge leaving and returning to the hotel as there is a barrage of restaurant touts to negotiate but all very good humoured.
All in all a good experience.
- Tim (8/5): Great for the price - Great spot right in the middle of the Old Town close to many resturants, bars and the sea. We stayed in room 5 which was a little noisy when the bakery below started work at 4am so if you are a light sleeper ask for a different room. Very helpful hosts and nice breakfast included with fresh bread from the bakery.
- Linda (10/5): Great central hotel - Our room was at the front of the hotel, it was a really large room which could easily sleep 3/4 people and also had a big bathroom. It's central location was brilliant for us as you were right in the heart of the bars and restaurants but might not be suitable for everyone. The continental breakfast was lovely with plenty of choice including delicious cake. Hotel staff were great. Would really recommend.
- Maggie (8/5): It's all down to Veronica - Excellent stay, right in the middle of the Old Town, Room large enough to lounge about in, with two armchairs, which we used at the big window during the day and in front of the TV later on. In between being out and about, of course!
We were in Funchal earlier in the year, but stayed out near Sao Martinho, and it was a joy to be so close to the old town and the fort and the harbour - and all the restaurants.
- Jason (10/5): Great value and Great Location - A lovely hotel placed right on the main dining street in Funchal
- Dorothy (10/5): - We had a wonderful stay here, very friendly, ideally positioned in the old town, you can step out into the street with a range of many restaurants. Its also very near to the cable car, buses and the sea front, with a short walk into the towns many shops.
Thankyou Veronica, you were so helpful, hope to see you again.
- Michelle (10/5): Great - A lovely old property in the old port area among lots of excellence restaurants. It is nicely decorated and maintained. I liked the two small courtyards. The breakfast was good with many options. Very clean and a friendly helpful receptionist. The only downside was no where to get a hot drink ( or drink of any kind) at night without having to go outside to a bar or restaurant. Apparently they are looking into this.
- Mike (10/5): - Beds (single) a little narrow, shwr not very powerful, but otherwise perfect, would def. stay again.
- Alan (8/5): Very nice small & clean hotel, close to main town. - Transfer taxi from airport to hotel, about 11kms,& only 20 euros, was on time and hassle free. We had on our paperwork a twin room & two twin beds. We got a room with two single beds butted up next to each other to make one large bed. Room was tidy and clean. Shower & water hot & cold very good. Toilet cistern push button would nearly always stick on so cistern was flushing constantly. We remedied this by moving the lid backward & forward which would free the button, so not a great problem. There was also a bidet. TV. Air condition unit which worked well.
- Maddie (8/5): Boutique hotel in the Old Town - I really enjoyed my stay here! Veronika on reception is AMAZING, will organise anything for you and knows all the guests by name. its close to great food in Funchal. Would definitely recommend
- Shelley (10/5): Excellent location - We were happy when we arrived to see that the hotel was exactly in the middle of Funchal, on a pedestrian street with dozens of restaurants. We tried a different one every night. Our hotel suite was spacious, clean and very comfortable, and the a/c was very much appreciated. There is no elevator but the beautiful wooden stairs made you forget that. Breakfast was normal continental fare, nothing to write home about.
Veronica, the host, was wonderful, extremely helpful, warm and charming. She made our stay even more pleasant. Would recommend this small hotel to anyone who wants to be in the heart of Funchal without a car.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Good but let down by noise during the night. - Nice staff and location but the noise from the bakery on the ground floor did not equal a good night's sleep. I think I was in the wrong room as others may have been quieter.
- Len (10/5): Funchal fun - As a solo, senior female, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this hotel from 29 Jan. through 04 Feb., 2015.
Prior to this hotel I stayed "up in the hills" at a lovely location; however, the convenience of being right in Old Town was far better in my opinion. The Island is absolutely gorgeous and the people fantastic. I am not sure why more Americans do not visit there.
I took a full day excursion to the eastern part of the island and another to the western part. Both were excellent. I am not sure one would be able to cover all the territory (approximately 180 K and 200 K) respectively in a private car. Flora Tours was great and booking for the tours was done in person at a location in Old Town.
- Peter (10/5): What a find! right in the centre of the old town . - Once you have found the Hotel there is a big greeting from the Receptionist & help with you cases to the enormous rooms you will be delighted. Go for a rear room or preferably the Suite (if you can afford it)
