Guest Reviews
- Gabriel (10/5): - First time staying in a Machiya and the experience couldn't have been better. Elegant and simplistic traditional Japanese design. The Machiya is a lot bigger than pictures suggest so very good value. could easily sleep 4-6 if some sleep on Futon beds. Wonderful location in Kazuemachi and within walking short walking distance to Higashi-Chaya district. Its tucked in an alley behind the row of Machiya's that face the river so its quieter and more private nothing. everything was perfect
- Mason (10/5): - The house was stunning. Very clean and stylish.
- Serkan (9/5): -
- Iosif (10/5): -
- John Hooley (10/5): An authentic slice of Kanazawa - Hard to fault such a well kept and fully featured historical building. We had a great stay for two nights and would love to return some day. The walls can be a little thin in the night and due to the nature of the area tourists may try to peek under the frosted windows downstairs. Didnt bother us adversely, but we did notice.
- Emma (10/5): Perfect family stay in beautiful Kanazawa - Authentic, homely and comfortable with everything you could ever need. Super helpful and communicative staff. Helped with luggage forwarding. -
- Radhika (10/5): It was wonderful to stay in a traditional machiya home. Highly recommend! - The location was perfect. The house is close to the river, in a traditional neighborhood—walking distance to a beautiful shrine complex and all the modern conveniences. The house was outfitted with everything we needed for a short stay, and the kitchen and bathroom, while small, were efficient and impeccably organized. We stayed in amazing Western-style hotels during our time in Japan, which we also loved. But it was so meaningful and fun to have the experience of staying in a traditional house for two nights, especially in Kanazawa, where the old neighborhoods are so well preserved. We truly felt right at home, and would definitely go back.

- Xavier (9/5): Fantastic - Authentic Japanese experience in an amazing location. Very much recommended. Kids loved it. Walking to all the places you want to go. Cool little bar two doors up. Get the Japanese menu if you can read it though. At the price, maybe throw in the parking? I wouldn’t plan on cooking there. There is a kitchen but it’s a little tight. Expected for a chaya though.

- IP (10/5): Amazing place in a quiet historic neighborhood - Beautiful house, walking distance to main sites, nice hosts
- William (10/5): Beautiful place and location! -
- Steve (10/5): Once in a lifetime stay - Staying in a historical and unique building like this felt like an absolute privilege. The location is very good and everything has been provided.
Recommend getting up early and exploring the surrounding areas while the streets are empty. Nothing to say here.
- Patrick (10/5): -
- Stephanie (10/5): Divine - Marvellous and beautiful
- Julie (10/5): A very special machiya in a beautiful, historic and friendly area of Kanazawa - A once in a lifetime opportunity to stay in a beautiful machiya. A gracious host met us on arrival. Check in was very easy.
We spent three wonderful days in Kanazawa.
Don't hesitate to book this accommodation if you have the good fortune to visit Kanazawa. You will be close to all the wonderful sites of Kanazawa.
We were sad to leave. We loved everything.
- Abdulrahman (10/5): Exceptional -
- Joel (9/5): A stay that will stay in your memories. - This was the most amazing property we stayed in Japan. The history and the immersive stay was so nice and relaxing.
- Amy (10/5): Traditional home in Japan to get the true experience. - Traditional geisha / tea house. A great size to Japan too. This accomodation blew us away. It was so traditional but had all the bits we needed. Is a great location. Kitchen was small but had everything one could need. Would have loved to stay longer here. Highly recommend if you are after a traditional experience. Our family of 5 fit comfortably and I have two teenagers and an 11 year old.
- Somsak (10/5): Lovely traditional Japanese townhouse - We have this lovely traditional Japanese entire house by ourselves. The house is super clean. Masami (the host) was very friendly and helpful. The house is in very good convenient location; 5-7 walks to Higashi Chaya district, 15-20 walks to Omicho market. The house provides both queens-bed bedroom and traditional futon beds. We slept all nights on futon beds and woke up without back-pain at all. None
- Michala (10/5): A must stay in Kanazawa!! - Could not fault this property. It’s absolutely beautiful and worth every penny. In a beautiful and quiet location, comfortable bed, gorgeous home and garden. Great kitchen facilities and bathroom. Staff were great and helpful. We loved everything.
- Rebecca (10/5): Incredible stay in beautiful traditional Machiya - Wow wow wow!!! It was so amazing. Such an incredible time staying in the house, it has so many rooms and so well maintained in a perfect area. Would 100% recommend and perfect location! . the house is so beautiful that people are taking pictures of it in the street but they cant see into the property so it didnt really bother us.
- Travis (10/5): Special stay in Kanazawa, an unforgettable experience - The house is beautiful and much bigger and better equipped than i anticipated. The location is perfect for exploring all the main parts of Kanazawa. I was initially a little on the fence about staying here but so glad I did, it made our time in Kanazawa that much more special. I loved being able to sit out on the terrace over the garden. Worth noting that given the nature of the property, the walls are thin and you can hear outside noise easily. Also it doesn’t have quite the level of luxury and comfort you may expect in a hotel.
- James (9/5): Superb -
- Scott (10/5): The property gave us the chance to experience a Japanese tea house in old part of Kanazawa. - The property gave me an opportunity to stay in a traditional tea house, in old Kanazawa.
- Carl (10/5): Private Japanese Villa in a historic neighbourhood -
- Jerome (10/5): Best location, best Machiya ever seen! - Authentic!
- Ryan (10/5): This was our group’s favorite stay during our Japan trip. I would recommend it to anyone planning a trip to Kanazawa. - The machiya was in a great location. Everything was in great order, all labeled in Japanese and English, and very well organized. The rooms were beautiful. The host welcomed us when we arrived and gave a very good tour of the house. She also continued to be very helpful when asked for restaurant recommendations during the course of our stay. The house next this one has geisha practicing their instruments so that was cool to hear. The stairs up to the sleeping area can be tricky so be careful. 2 of our group are very tall, though.
- Timothy (10/5): - Very traditional house in an historic area. The management team was super helpful and attentive.
- Michelle (10/5): Truly magical! - This Machiya was more beautiful than the photos. The best part about staying here was that you could feel the vibe of its past, and imagine yourself living in the Edo period. The house is quite large with plenty of room to spread out. Every room had views of the beautiful inner garden, which provided me with much pleasure. All of the sliding doors fully open so you can experience the inside/outside nature of Japanese living. The host was available and helpful, the neighborhood quaint and perfectly located. If you want an authentic, and comfortable abode this is the place—truly magical! Because this neighborhood is so historic there are lots of tourists walking among the tiny streets. We went at the end of May, so the tourist influx wasn’t too bad. But once inside, you forget the tourists and enjoy the inner calmness.
- Ivo (10/5): Unforhettable - Unique experience to leave in a Jose like locals do. Everything very well organize d and clean
- Jane (9/5): A beautiful traditional house - It is a great experience to be able to stay in a traditional house. This one has been so carefully curated and made comfortable for travellers. Everything that you need is clearly labelled with instructions. The location is great in a traditional Chaya and across the bridge is the more touristy, HigashiChaya.it is a residential area and so people can be quite noisy outside.
The property is managed and they were kind enough to forward a charger we left behind. They also provided a thorough introduction to the house on our arrival It can be noisy outside with people chatting as they walk past. The bathroom is off the kitchen - it works fine…
- Daniela (10/5): - I absolutely loved my stay here. The property supplied everything one could imagine. Even the most random things like shoe warmers. It was in a great location and we had a little bar right next to us so we could stop for a drink. Easy walk to the historic town or to the Samurai village. I would highly recommend it.
- Juan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anonymous (9/5): Superb -
- Laurent (10/5): Beautiful traditional house impeccably appointed. - This house has to be the most beautiful place I have ever stayed in. A timber geisha house in a small alley lined with similar houses, painted a dusky red. Inside the impeccable tatami rooms flowed into each other, over two floors, all opening on the internal miniature garden. The house is perfectly equipped with a well-appointed kitchen, plenty of tableware and very comfortable beds: there was a western style queen bed and Japanese futon beds, all of which were superbly comfortable. Everyone got a wonderful night’s sleep. The house has so many beautiful details, it has clearly been restored with great taste and expertise and a loving eye. An absolute must if you come to Kanazawa. Also the location is perfect to explore the old town. I was very sad we could only stay one day. Everything was impeccable.
- Mary (10/5): Lovely place to stay and a great way to enjoy Japan! - Authentic Japanese home in a nice area. Peaceful for sleeping.
- Scott (10/5): beautiful house in historic home and location - historic old Minka in a quiet and historic area with geishas. good comfortable bed and shower.
- Desislava (10/5): Amazing place in a historic building. Everything had its place and was labeled for English users - They met me at the time I requested even the Pugh it was before the check in time. Nothing. Great experience overall.
- Christine (10/5): Exceptional - It's a glimpse into time. It's wonderful to experience a little of the Edo period. And the host went above and beyond. We forgot a pair of shoes and she sent it to our home right away. Nothing really. Even during winter time, the house stayed warm and held the heat very well!
The only thing that will always bug me a little are the hard Japanese beds. But that's just my preference
- Kuntadi (8/5): Very good -
- William (10/5): The best - Incredible place, location, and accommodation. Very beautiful.
- lesley (10/5): Amazing ryokan - This is the most amazing guest house! It is very clean comfortable and efficient ... the comforter is so fluffy it is like you are sleeping in a cloud ... one could stay for months it is so perfectly supplied. The details are subtle and well thought out ... it is like you are staying in a Japanese friends home. The breakfasts are Japanese, delicious and large. It is in a quiet neighborhood and centrally located
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Emma (10/5): Fabulous family accommodation - As a family of four with an 11 and 13 year old this was the best accommodation during our few weeks in Japan. The accommodation is very spacious and comfortable. The kitchen is small in size but is very functional and well equipped for cooking. We ventured to the nearby fish markets and bought everything we needed for a lovely dinner. Staff are extremely pleasant and helpful. Cannot recommend this place highly enough.
- Nadher (10/5): Great Ryokan - Great Ryokan in a very good location. The hotesess was very kind and helpfull. There is also a tea celebration room, where we asked for one on the day of arrival, luckly the person who conducts the celebration was available (costs 10,000 yen as a fixed cost plus 1,500 yen per person). Highly recommended and we were all happy to stay.
- Lai Kuen Annie (10/5): high quality - high quality accommodation with nice interior details and outside environment.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very nice. Great attention to detail. My only complaint is I longed for a real chair or sofa. To
- Kiyomi (10/5): Must come out.
- Thomas (10/5): Beautiful authentic Japanese house - A fantastic authentic machiya (Japanese house) more rooms than we could use a complete kitchen and bathroom 2 floors to call your own. It was beautifully presented and a pleasure to stay in.
- Shelly (10/5): Like hiring a traditional Japanese house - I was expecting something different after making the booking, but was pleasantly surprised when I looked at their own website and got a better idea of what to expect. You are booking the whole place and can choose to either self-cater or eat out as you wish. It was lovely to have a traditional Japanese house to yourselves, the setting is lovely and the Machiya is so gorgeous and atmospheric. We were very impressed by the facilities, particularly the bathroom and the kitchen, as well as by the lovely little internal garden. The staff were very helpful, providing information and making reservations, and our stay was thoroughly enjoyable. We just wish we'd stayed for longer so that we could have had more time to drink in the building and the peace it offers, plus the atmospheric location at the heart of the Geisha district.
- Sadako (10/5): Maison traditionnelle luxueuse - Excellente maison pour passer 2 nuits à Kanazawa. Personnel très accueillant, tout était parfait.
