Guest Reviews
- Chris (10/5): - Great base to explore Tortuguero.
Friendly and helpful staff
- Marghrit (10/5): - Our stay at The Caribbean Paradise lodge was very pleasant, the staff goes above and beyond to make you feel comfortable. The grounds are very clean , lots of wildlife you can hear and see. It is 10 minutes away from Tortuguero village by taxi boat, but the staff is always ready to help with that. There is no AC but the fan in the room was sufficient and we had comfortable nights and slept well enjoying the sounds of nature . The breakfast was included and is an open buffet, you can arrange to buy lunch and dinner which are made on the property . We would love to go again .
- Haruki566 (10/5): It was amazing tour :) - Alexis Torres took me a night tour. He has great knowledge and showed us a lot of things while walking. Thanks to him, our participants had wonderful time. I really recommend to have his tour!
It’s hard to take photos in the night! I wish I could share more animals that I saw in this tour! So should see and check by yourself!
- Ninaaloha (10/5): Amazing place - An amazing place to stay in Tortuguero where you can disconnect and be around the nature. The rooms are clean confortable and the service is perfect thanks again to everyone at the hotel especially Bismarck.
- magdaluvnf (8/5): In the jungle - Rustic boat dock reception. Drinks awaited us upon arrival. All staff and dogs were very friendly. Large sleeping area and bathroom. Screens only, no A/C but ceiling fan was more than adequate. Be prepared to hear howler monkeys at night. Restaurant very accommodating. Don't miss the wild bird walking into the restaurant! Lovely pool area and grounds.
- Headleyhog (8/5): Magical setting with friendly staff - Rustic (ie basic) hotel in magical setting at side of river just ten minutes river taxi ride from Tortuguero. We arrived to a friendly welcome and mocktail from Bismarck for a 2 night stay. We were quickly checked in and helped to our rooms by the friendly and helpful staff. Soft drinks and beer available from the fridge - just tell reception what you’ve taken. Free coffee available in reception too. You really feel like you’re in the rain forest with all the fabulous noises that entails day and night. The howler monkeys we saw on both days were especially noisy. Several interesting birds wandering the grounds . Our favourite place was to lie in the hammock and watch the wildlife and boats on the river. Slight disappointments preventing 5 stars were lack of safe , slow WiFi (and in reception only) and luke warm shower. We really enjoyed our stay and tried to stay for one more night but unfortunately they were fully booked.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The setting was very nice, spectacular in fact, as all of Tortuguero. The prices were however quite hard to justify.
- fishp1g (6/5): Basic - no creature comforts - + points.*Quiet and good location for Tortuguero. A water-taxi ride is only $10 for a couple each way and a out 10mins away. 2. We heard Howler Monkeys around 4am - so loud and sounded like it was right outside the room. 3. Nice-ish grounds, more communal bits would be welcome. 4. Reception girl was really helpful and friendly.
- points. What we think was the owner, a guy with long hair, we felt had poor customer service. Pretty arrogant and didn't say thanks for staying/ goodbye when we left pr provide key info and just pointed to where our room was. 2. Room wasn't ready upon arrival but soon sorted. 3. Food very average and buffet style which felt risky but was fine.
Observations. Popular with families with young children with a pool to keep them entertained. About 3 dogs running around who were the owners and very friendly.
Conclusion. Fine to stay if you want rustic away from Tortuguero. Owner needs to take customer service lessons from the girl who also works there.
- kohlerkid (10/5): Understand that you are in the Jungle - If you are looking for a place in the middle of nowhere that is quite and slow paced you need not look any further.
The photos are misleading or out of date. This is a great place if you want to see monkeys in the trees out side of your hotel room, and have an amazing natural jungle hotel.
Pros:
Hot water
calm
Island pace
Staff can get you drinkable water
Food is pretty good
clean
Cons:
thin walls
really mean ants (but not in the rooms)
in progress of being built up
- JulieM870 (8/5): Right in the heart of the rainforest - Arriving here is an adventure in itself as there are no roads and the only way in is by boat. The journey takes about an hour along the Rio Suerte where you can see Crocodiles and Plumed Basilisks plus a whole range of birds.
On arrival we were met by the owner Bismarck who showed us to our rooms. The rooms were basic but clean. The bed was one of the highest I have ever been in.
The gardens were beautiful and Baby the resident Tiger Heron was very friendly.
We only ate lunch and breakfast here but it was hot and tasty.
Top tip - ask Bismarck to make you a cricket from grass blades.
- vinions (8/5): Not quite what I was expecting but amazing nonetheless - I came in here with expectations which I probably shouldn't have.
The location is great. Right by the river and away from civilization. Yes, it'll cost money to boat down to the main town but otherwise it's definitely a "jungle" experience. The lodges are a nice touch. The howler monkeys were LOUD (hope you are not a light sleeper) at night. Lots of bugs.
The rooms were pretty standard. Nothing fancy. No desk or chair so "worked" on my bed. Docked a star because there is NO air conditioning though they did bring me a fan upon request! No TV and because it gets dark around 5-6pm, be prepared to sleep early or bring things to do in your rooms.
The dual lodges that I was in had 3 beds and really spacious to have a group over and play a game on the floor at night.
By the way, the staff there is AWESOME.
The pool is nice. The food was great. The service is excellent. Hot showers. WiFi only available by the dock.
We were there to rest after a long week of work so we didn't do any excursions though the hotel offered some.
- claudelaferriere (2/5): Not a 4* - This place was presented to us as 4 *, but it is not even a 1*. The room looked like an army shack, no chair, no mirror in the bathroom, no hot water at the sink. If you're the first to take a shower in the group of 4 rooms, you may have warm water in the shower. The 2 small beds were not comfortable either. Enough said, I do not recommend it to anybody.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - OK: Ruhige Lage, schöner Park.
- susanarL7933RE (10/5): VERY beautiful spot with friendly staff - We loved our time here. They even upgraded our rooms on arrival. the food in the restaurant was very good. Thank you for a great stay!!
The pool was great. the rooms were very spacious and comfortable.
- Su24 (10/5): What a find - Our daughter had stayed here & suggested it to us but said it’s not your usual 4 star! But it was amazing, clean, good authentic food, the best situation. Fabulous. Bismarck the manager & all the staff were so helpful. Saw Howler Monkeys & blue jean grogs in the small walk. And Bismarck organised private tours for us. Can’t recommend it enough
- Sue (10/5): A Gem - This place was ideal. Wonderfully friendly people, Bismarck the manager was so helpful at getting us on tours with local guides, just the 2 of us so we could decided what we wanted to do. Food was a good buffet at breakfast & just 1 choice in the evening but nice. Town is a boat taxi ride away, 10 minutes $10 return for 2. Rooms were clean & quiet, grounds well kept with hammocks in shaded areas. Our daughter told us about it, as she’d found it & had a girls holiday there ideal for all types of adventures Highly recommend
- JuliaHerts (10/5): Heavenly wilderness - This place blew our mind. You're actually staying in the national park. All you have to do is walk around the gardens to see Caiman, Iguana, monkeys etc just paradise. Very chilled with great staff and Ron was a top guide. We got the wayer taxi into Torteguero twice for a change of scene but we couldnt wait to get back. We were a family of 4 with teenagers and and 8 year old and we loved it. Thank you.
- mobket (8/5): Nature first, quiet, chill - This is a very good place to stay if you like nature and wildlife (which you obviously do if you want to go to Tortuguero). And it is a great place for families. Friendly and helpful staff.
We were lucky to share the place with only one other family. We did an early morning boat trip with Ronald, which was great. Unfortunately, due to rain, we did not go canoeing in the national park.
The garden is nice, and the rooms are clean. (A/C not necessary.) As I understand, when the current owners took over a year ago, the place was somewhat run down. The installation still feels a bit worn, but they are now constantly improving and repairing things.
Food is ok, but not gourmet. They offer shuttle to the village, for beach walking, restaurants and ice cream.
This is a nature first place, with monkeys, caimans and tucans outside your door. Great for families, and great if you want something else than a backpacker hostel in the village.
- Travelflie (10/5): Amazing stay in a wonderful place - The lodge itself changed owners a year ago, and they are fixing the place up little by little. That being said we loved our stay. The lodge is on the jungle side, which was the reason why we picked the place.
We were picked up and greeted by the wonderful guide Ronald at the airstrip.
There was only one other family staying at the lodge while we were there, which we really enjoyed.
The lodge is spacious and comfortable.
We had lunch and breakfast both days, and all the meals were plenty and tasty.
We had wonderful weather both days, and went on a great boat tour in the early morning with Ronald. We saw lots of wildlife.
We also had the pleasure of spending lots of hours by the pool, and since it’s situated in the jungle, we saw toucans, caiman, spidermonkeys and lots of birds and insects right there.
We could go into the village whenever we wanted, so we went there for dinner both nights.
- dgkukal (4/5): Not functional at this time - Unless you want the adventure of being dropped off alone in the jungle at night with no one there, reconsider this choice.
We picked this resort based on the website, which looks good. I corresponded via email with a woman who was very nice, and decided to make the reservation even though we had to pay $50 to do a bank transfer of our initial deposit - very difficult, as well as costly. She encouraged us - two couples - to take the public ferry - no roads to Tortuguero, access only by river - and she encouraged us to decide about meals when we got there.
We drove from San Jose and took the 4:30 ferry, the last one of the day. They dropped us off at the dock, with all our suitcases, and the boat took off down the dark river.
And there was no one there. No guests, no staff, no one. Just us in the darkening jungle. It was weird (cue the scary music!! :)
We walked all over, shouting for someone. The office there on the dock was open, and there were some lights, but no people. We tried to call the numbers listed on the paperwork - nothing - and the numbers on the sign, and we eventually reached the cousin of the wife of the previous owner who had been dead for 2 years. (Yes, this is really true.) She said she'd try to find the new owner, but she was not able to.
When it got really dark, we decided we'd have to spend the night. We looked in the rooms; some were being re-done, but we found rooms we liked with sheets and working lights, and made ourselves at home. We had brought wine and chocolate, so we knew we'd be fine for the night. (Incidentally, we picked the rooms they show on this form.)
After a couple of hours, three men with plates of food walked out of the jungle (I think they were going to sit and eat at the dock) and they were shocked to find us. One man, who may be the 'manager' said "The staff waited for you all day and at 4:00 they went home." I said we had taken the last ferry, as instructed, which he was aware left the dock (an hour away) at 4:30. He felt they had waited long enough anyway. He then tried to move us into small rooms with no porch - we just said no.
We swam that night, after they turned on the lights for the pool, and it was warm and the pool was clean. That was the strange thing - the rooms with beds made up, the pool maintained, there was someone to do the rooms - but no people, no guests, no staff on site when we arrived, and for hours after.
We stayed both the nights we had reserved, and ate breakfast and an overpriced dinner there the second day. The staff we met were friendly, but the manager could not understand why we thought it was a problem that no one was there when we came. I sent an e-mail to the woman I had originally corresponded with, but it came back undeliverable.
It may be that this will be a functioning place in the future - they are keeping the rooms up, and the grounds too. But right now, unless you want to be left on the dock, alone in the jungle - which was a cool adventure, actually - then you'll need to choose somewhere else.
- sarahhM2381KB (6/5): Good and Bad in Parts..... - The Lodge itself, off the main canal leading to Tortuguera, is fine - the accommodation is spacious and clean, and the resort staff are friendly and helpful. They also run a regular boat service into the village itself, where you can book all the activities (or they will do it for you). My negatives would be that the food is poor - the worst we had in a hotel - as you are a captive market, all services and trips are overpriced (my recommendation is to go into the town and book there - and definitely take the canoe ride through the national park - we saw so many animals and birds it was incredible. One thing you have to see are the turtles nesting - they are majestic when they emerge from the sea, and crawl up the beach to dig a very deep hole and lay 100-150 far-from-small eggs (well done, Mrs Turtle).
- ursulaon2ur (8/5): Great for nature lovers - Yes, It's a little tired and not 5 star. But.. great location on the river, lovingly maintained gardens that attract humming birds and butterflies. Backs on to national park, so you get a tiger heron looking in for breakfast and can observe howler monkeys from your porch. Clean, nice pool, cool rooms, no need for a/c, fully netted against mosquitos. Offer boat tours with Ron who is very knowledgeable, short trips to Tortuguero village, trips to see turtles and jungle walking tours. It's chilled and guests are made very comfortable.
- Samantha (8/5): A special location - This hotel is very basic but it was spotlessly clean, had everything you needed and the service was very good. But the really special thing about this hotel is the location. We were the only people staying at this hotel so it was extremely quiet apart from the sounds of the jungle. We lay in bed at night listening to monkeys, birds, from making their noises. Whilst we dangled our feet in the swimming pool we watched the spider monkeys play in the trees. It was very special.
The staff are very friendly and accommodating, helping us arrange transport and trips. We did a couple of trips from here, the kayak, jungle walk and turtle tour. All were incredible and the guides were excellent
- mirian (10/5): Mooie relaxte locatie - Geweldig mooie locatie.
- Sonja W. (2/5): Misleading advertising - I couldn’t say I loved our stay while the staff seemed nice. This is a newer establishment and there seemed to be a lack of transparency in how they conduct business. First, the complementary WiFi only exists on the dock and not in your room, which made researching the area very difficult. Second, i regret booking our canoe tour through them, with one guy quoting us one price and another refuting it and us paying significantly more than necessary. Third, the outdoor pool was being repaired and we had to be transported to another hotel to use their pool. Going off the property takes surcharges and I still couldn’t figure out how much. The first guy said they offer a 50% discount than local water taxi, which made it $10. The other guy didn’t seem happy about it and after chitchatting in Spanish among themselves, they came back to say it should be $16. this is the kind of lack of transparency that makes me very uncomfortable. Oh since you might not want to spend 16 dollars to get off their property, you can eat at their restaurant for 15 but this was also not written out anywhere. Overall I feel the staff is trying really hard to make people pay more rather than operating on a fair pricing system. I would not recommend this property to anyone unless there is significant improvement.
- sherry (10/5): This place is a great deal for visiting tortuguero - We love this place! It is clean and basic with comfortable beds and the grounds are gorgeous. It's a short way from town but they are willing to drive you there by boat and believe me it is much nicer than town! Great staff and food. Highly recommend, good value... Kudos to Ron our nature guide, Bismarck the manager and Edna the cook. We were sad to leave after two days
- Dagmar (10/5): Beautiful setting and lovely garden - We (family of three) were the guests every hotel manager dreams of: we arrived at a time when we were no longer expected, on the first night we managed to break the room key and upon leaving our daughter forgot a bag at the quai while boarding the boat to La Paviona (1hour from Tortuguero). Great. But instead of freaking out (it's not that easy to arrange for a new room key in remote Tortuguero) Bernardo stayed calm and helped us with everything. Pura vida!
- Alexander (10/5): Beautiful garden and excellent service - The hotel is located about 10 minutes before Tortuguero town which causes a slight inconvenience with the logistics. Taxis are going back and forth all the time but the fare is not free and the cost adds up after a while.
The hotel is located in a beautiful little sanctuary with their own restaurant, pool and hammocks. Absolutely perfect if you are just here for relaxation.
The manager has been very accomodating and helped us with everything we needed. Definitely full points for service effort!
SALUDOS
- annon (6/5): Beautiful grounds, quiet, ok rooms - Manager Bernardo was helpful in organizing our time in Tortuguero. Excursions can be booked through the lodge (via Bernardo) or in town. However, it's recommended to book your excursion through the lodge and pay a little more to ensure your excursion is legit. We did the canal tour and turtle tour and would highly recommend doing both. Turtle tour during turtle nesting season is a must do!
The lodge itself is on beautiful grounds surrounded by lots of greenery. As a result, you can hear the animals throughout the night and the howler monkeys in the morning. This is an experience on its own and one of the main reasons why I would recommend staying at a location not within Tortuguero town. We even saw white faced monkeys in the trees one day!
Rooms are basic and have everything you need, but have a feeling of constant dampness due to the location and likely time of year we visited. Beds and pillows are moderately comfortable, so if you're looking for luxury, keep in mind this is an eco-lodge.
The only way to get to town is by water taxi which costs $5/person (usd) each way, which you'll need to do if you don't want to eat all of your meals at the lodge. I would recommend this as it's also a way to experience the culture of tortuguero.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Very good location in the Park. - This is a nice hotel in the park. It's away from the main "town", about a 5 minute water taxi ride away. The grounds are nice, there is hiking at the hotel. On the hotel grounds and hiking trails over 4 days we say howler monkeys, spider monkeys, toucans, macaws, poison dart frogs, and lots of other critters! They offer boat tours of the canals, which were wonderful. We loved the first one so much, we booked another one the next day, where they took us to different parts of the canals. On the canals, we saw some rare birds, cayman, more monkeys, and even a sloth. The guide was extremely nice and knowledgeable. We hung out with the owners a few times, they are very nice. The manager was also incredibly nice. It was just a great experience overall, and a wonderful place to stay at while visiting the park. Remember, this hotel, and all the other ones are IN THE JUNGLE, which means there are lots of insects, it's hot, everything's damp and humid, etc... This isn't a 5 star Hilton in a city!
- sonia (6/5): Somewhat dissapointing - The setting is very picturesque but the hotel is far from the village, every time you need to go to the village you must pay $10 to water taxi. Additionally, we had no hot water during the first day of our stay which is tough in hot weather. The conditions are very basic, its more 2 starts then 3.
- Verified traveler (4/5): ECO is a fancy word for Budget in Costa Rica - Not your typical Costa Rican hospitality - felt a bit of a prisoner here. You will eat this amount of this food at this time, and it will cost you $20 per person to leave the island that only it is on. We arrived too late for lunch so had to do without eat, and there is nowhere else to eat without paying $20 for the boat to go elsewhere. Nothing to do here and very basic.
- John (10/5): Traumurlaub - Für Abenteuer Ferien das richtige Hotel. Das Personal sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit. Pool sehr sauber. Ein großes Danke dem Team.
- Charlotte (6/5): Nice surroundings - rooms a bit 'tired' - Area is great. Great restaurant - great cook. Nice surroundings (garden and swimming pool). Rooms are tired - needs to be refreshed.
- Cher (8/5): Located is a remote area - This hotel has tons of potential, we were the only guests in the hotel, therefore making it difficult for the staff to prepare meals. The food that was prepared for us was good, we did not have a choice they just served what they have on hand. The rooms are clean and the staff was pleasant and very helpful, a new manager had just started and did his best to accommodate us. The pool was nice and the land was beautiful. This is remote so if you would like to leave you need to take a water taxi (with a charge) We also took a tour of the river while their that was wonderful. Our tour guide was from the area and extremely knowledgeable. The hotel is in need of some updating but overall they are working on items as they go. We did not find any type of bugs or critters in our rooms. The owners were their when we were and were very friendly and helpful.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Natuur paradijs - Prachtige omgeving. Kamer met basis voozieningen in prima staat. Horren in ramen.
Goed bed, prima douche.
- 4Vermonters (10/5): Wonderful Rainforest-Families-Rustic and Beautiful - Our family of 4 wanted to experience Costa Rica rainforest that was remote, pristine, and all around us. Even in this remote location we did not seek out air-conditioned hotels with 100 rooms and long lines at mealtime. The Caribbean Paradise Eco Lodge, has just over 20 rooms. A well kept, three acre clearing with flowers everywhere, brooks, dining area (and wow!) a swimming pool, as well as a very large covered dock on the main river- was perfect for us (and a rare treasure). This location is about 3 hours by taxi from the San Jose Airport to just get to the Ferry Dock, it's a beautiful ride over cloud forests and through farmland (we now understand you can fly here). Then the 45 minute ferry boat ride in, to get to the hotel, was breathtaking as we cruised over the river and through the jungle by a very skilled river pilot. At the Eco-Lodge hotel we met the owners and staff and (lucky us) we arrived in time for Christmas Eve dinner. We loved the family atmosphere in the dining room and enjoyed exchanging stories with people from around the world. Our days were spent on the grounds as well as many guided tours (because the only way to go anywhere is by these fun boat rides). See photos. Seeing sloths, monkeys, reptiles, birds, fish, flowers while on our boat tours and hikes was really fantastic. Watching baby sea turtles running to the Ocean is a thing of beauty.
- eugeny (10/5): Getsway - Wonderful people
- Sandra (6/5): Off the beaten path - This hotel was cute and if you are looking to be off the beaten path, that is exactly what you'll get. This hotel is approximately 5 km from town, only accessible by boat. The hotel will provide a boat taxi, but this costs $5 per passenger to go to town, which adds up after a couple days. In addition they seemed to overcharge for some of the tours. The listed price for the "Canal Tour" was $20 a person. When we went we were asked for $10 each to get passes into the national park area. When checking out, we were then charged $20 each. Either I missed something or the price is truly $30 a person, which is not the listed price of this activity, leaving me feeling like they took advantage of us and pocketed the extra money. The breakfasts were large and wonderful and the overall experience was pleasant, but I highly doubt I'll be back. There wasn't much to do and most of the time I felt trapped at the hotel. They do have WIFI, but only at the restuarant/reception area, not in the rooms.
- Guillermo (10/5): nice retreat close to town with park on the back - Do not expect to be in the town because you are not. If you come to this lodge is because it is in its own field next to the national park, with plenty of fields to enjoy, its fauna and its own trail to get into it (plus a pool if you want it). Sleep listening to the sounds of nature, see the monkeys above you and plenty of life, that is priceless. A boat taxi to the city will cost you 5$, but they give you two for free and organize tours for you, so you don't need the city if you want more peace. The place is really a paradise, Even with a good breakfast. Be sure to arrange the tours with them to avoid depending of going down to the city for that and then wait.
- Eve (4/5): Stay Away! - I don't know who gave this eco-lodge five stars. I am a world traveler and always stay in four stars and I can tell you, this is a two star. The room was old and depressing. The food was just OK. The staff was great. The owners were not on site so I am mystified by the reviews saying how great they were.
- Izabela (10/5): Fantastic lokation, peronal, friendly service - Unforgettable. Miguel from the hotel picked us up in La Pavona, which was a nice surprise. Hotel is located in the jungle, 5 minutes boat ride from the town ($10 per family one way) but honestly, after visiting the village if Tortuguero and the National Park, the hotel setting was better. It welcomed us with large group of spider monkeys residing I the nearby trees, tucans, turtles 20 yards from our house, caiman, parrots and a sloth. The hotel staff is passionate, they told us about animals and their habits. 3-course delicious breakfast is included and other meals very good and well priced. The rooms need some updating bit they are very clean, bug-free and large and comfortable. Eve though it was raining most of our stay, it was the best place we have stayed in Costa Rica. If you consider going to Costa Rica Caribbean Paradise is a must. You will see all the animals through your room window and peple who know and care about them. Loved it!
