Daytime dining is available between 12noon - 5pm, and our Bistro and A La Carte options are available between 18:30 - 20:30 in the evening. Please note that use of Garden Spa will incur an additional charge of £25, per person. Please note that there is a smart casual dress code when fine dining at the hotels 2 AA Rosette Restaurant. Shorts, trainers or men's sandals are not permitted. Alternatively, the Bistro 1871 offers a much more relaxed and informal style of dining. Please note that our Lounge will be closed for refurbishment from 18th January to 4th February. Window frame moving outwards , bathroom very compact and I burnt my leg on towel rail when exiting the bath after showering , food was nice an hot and tasty apart from the roll I got with my soup was really hard and I couldn’t eat it I thought it was the outer crust that was hard but it was solid throughout it had obviously been heated in microwave to long and mentioned it to the staff
Geoff (5/5): Disappointing on so many levels - The hotel has a nice location with a short walk into Appleby. The barman was very good and the conservatory and restaurant have a relaxing ambiance. Room was spacious and clean. Ample car parking. Expensive for what you get. Check in staff member was a bit grumpy. The room was decent enough until we discovered the large shower had a badly cracked tray - not good as it was clearly letting water down through the cracks and you had to be careful not to trap the skin underfoot. There were many large cracks on examination and when reported on check out the staff member said that they were aware that several had already been replaced - so why was this room allowed to be used? Not good. The spa come at an extra cost of £25 per person - you can't even use the pool without paying extra. Breakfast was poor - the cooked breakfast came with one piece of each item and the mushroom was dried up. The cold buffet was very poor: tinned fruit, very limited selection of breads and other produce. If you wanted a latte instead of a simple instant coffee they wanted an extra £4.50 - really? The room came with a half-bottle of prosecco that was supposed to be free, except that it wasn't in a fridge and would cost £5 for some ice! The whole experience felt like they were penny-pinching and many levels :(

Richard (9/5): Fabulous food, building, staff and views but pricey for drinks and a bit of a walk for town. - The food was excellent. We ate in the restaurant on one of the two nights we stayed and the food was exceptional both in quality and value. The building itself is very fine and the additional conservatory spaces which expand the downstairs space allowing for the restaurant and additional bar seating have been tastefully added. I have rated the comfort down one notch due to the bathroom. Hotel bathrooms are one of my pet subjects - most are woefully poor. This was good but two things could be improved. One is a need for more space to hang towels, especially near the shower. In a twin room, the expectation should be that both hand towels and bath towels will be used. Hanging space for both hand towels near the wash basin and both bath towels near the shower are essential and weren't provided. The other is ventilation. As with many interior retro-fitted hotel bathrooms, getting heat and steam out of the bathroom adequately is rarely accomplished and this is no exception. This coupled with the high radiator setting made the room quite unpleasant after a shower. Finding oneself sweating in a sauna like atmosphere while trying to shave in a mirror that simply fogs over again whenever it is wiped, detracts from the comfort experience. I have also knocked a point for value for money. This is due to bar prices which aren't actually that far above the norm but for my brother and I who like a drink, this was a bit of a sting. However, if you're not a big drinker, the restaurant is excellent value. The lost point on facilities in room is the same as the comfort point - bathroom. I considered dropping a point for location. It gains massively from having beautiful views across the valley over the town to the castle on the far side. In this sense the location is glorious! However, it loses a bit from being a mile up a steep hill from the civic centre of the town - which is beyond the station. If you don't mind the walk, this is a minor inconvenience and is intrinsic to achieving the fabulous views.

Mark (6/5): Not bad - Breakfast was excellent, dinner good, the restaurant and conservatory areas are lovely, parking very spacious Small room up 2 narrow flights of stairs, very dated and tatty, bathroom window wouldn't lock shut, kept blowing open in the wind Much needs refurbishment
Olivia (8/5): A nice hotel that could be great with a little love - A large manor house with modern additions, and plenty of downstairs space. The bedroom was huge, high ceiling, big windows. Warm and quiet (though if the window is open you hear the nearby ring road). Bed linen and mattress very comfortable. A small clean bathroom. Spa area was very clean and empty when I visited. Nice vegetarian cooked breakfast. The serving staff at dinner and breakfast were friendly and helpful. The bathroom was a bit tired and had a single soap dispenser rather than little bottles (maybe being eco-conscious but felt a tad mean). Dinner at the Bistro was poor - a sad bit of boil in the bag salmon. Reception staff didn’t seem pleased to see me and calls to the hotel on the number given in the room went unanswered and apparently messages were not picked up by the next morning.

Dutton (9/5): Lovely Garden suite stay, underwhelming breakfast - The garden suite was amazing and great value. Wish we had more time to enjoy it! Given how nice the staff and room was, breakfast was a little disappointing. Big plates with a small amount of hot food for main, and small plates for toast that didn’t fit! Also no fresh fruit or nice sourdough, no Greek yoghurt- just plain yoghurt, nor Bircher muesli. It was adequate but not as good as it could have been

Ralph (7/5): Very acceptable for breaking a journey further north. - Staff were friendly and helpful. Food was ok. Room and modern wing of the hotel felt rather bland and uninspired. Bed was too hard for us.
Rosemarie (10/5): Hidden gem of a traditional hotel and spa - Beautiful historic building with great architecture and stunning staircase. Weekend birthday spa break for my eldest daughter. Upgraded our room and early entry to room very much appreciated. Spa facilities lovely and delicious light afternoon tea to follow. Enjoyed the use of the Conservatory and lounge areas. Supper and breakfast were served in the Bistro. Great ambiance, delightful menu choices and comfortable surroundings. All staff were extremely welcoming in all area of the hotel and spa. Special mention to Carol on reception on our arrival. We received exceptional customer service. Thank you so much, No concerns

Martin (7/5): Good staff. Bedrooms decidedly old and need refurbishing everything else was better than expected - The staff were most helpful and 5* to the manager Shawn. Evening meal and breakfast was fantastic. Main rooms are well decorated and clean with a proper fire, very warm for a cold winters stay. First room was like something from the land that time had forgotten. Noisy radiator and shower from my grandparents time A little like a living museum. Candlewick blanket would have made it a totally convincing 1960’s time capsule. Upgrade room was not a lot better As above

Hugh (8/5): We will ceratinly use the hotel again to break our regular journies to Scotland. - We were up-graded to a luxury room with double aspect and lovely view. We really enjoyed both dinner and breakfast. All the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Louise (10/5): Amazing views, a hidden gem - Beautiful setting with amazing views. Staff very helpful and friendly, especially the restaurant staff who were cheerful and welcoming. The spa facilities were just right. Not crowded, and good choices. A real hidden gem. Nothing, everything passed our expectations .
Mark (7/5): We came away for a quiet getaway this was not what we expected. - It was OK, but nothing extra special. although the staff were very professional. The TV didn’t work due to no signal. The bathroom was very small, and the room itself was quite noisy when other guests went to bed - not sure what it would be like if the hotel was busy. Although not hotels fault, we were annoyed by an old chap using his mobile phone (not quietly) over breakfast, be it as a phone or a video which he then relayed to another couple on another nearby table. The administration fee was removed upon request.

John (6/5): - Went online about 2 30 on Tuesday and booked this hotel because stayed there a couple years ago and the spa was brilliant. Arrived from Glasgow about 5 15 only to be told the spa closed at 5. Only booked this because of spa VERY DISSAPOINTED. Told it would be open at 10 in morning. Now if it closes at 5 and you can only check in at 3 it doesn't give you a lot of time and what about customers that turn up after work say 6 or 7. Opens at 10 in morning but check out is 11. Was then told to use the spa would cost £25 each and would have to book it 24 hours in advance. Happy enough with rest of hotel but feel we were lead up garden path. Website said spa was open for duration of our stay. Not good enough
Judith (8/5): Enjoyed our stay, we will return again to use the lovely spa garden facilities. - Beautiful views from the breakfast room. Very nice breakfast served by friendly polite staff. Our room had a tiny window so felt quite dark. However we did get a last minute break for a really good price so I would not be put off staying again.

Darren (6/5): Nice place to go for peace and quiet and the spa - The building itself was lovely and the grounds with the scenery were really nice too No 24 hour reception most of the doors were locked so couldn’t access outside like going to your car if needed after 11pm Breakfast milk was off which almost made me sick
