- Robyn (7/5): We are staying in old pubs around nz and this one was good. - Close to the ferry terminal Needs some upgrading of decor.
- Sangita (10/5): -
- Guest (6/5): -
- Maxine (8/5): Great location to see the city on a budget - Had culture, staff were lovely and the food great. Fab central location. Room was tired with cracked cups and sink
- Guest (8/5): -
- Bruce (4/5): Good central location but spoilt lack of attention to the accommodation part of this establishment. - Restaurant provides good pub style meals.
Comfortable bed with excellent shower.
CBD location Not value for money do to my late booking and dynamic pricing.
My room was not ready when I arrived at the designated time.
Room sment musty and needed a good airing.
Broken towel rail in bathroom.
Shower was as clean as it could be given age of the fittings.
- Victoria (10/5): -
- Emma (10/5): -
- Paula (3/5): I knew a historic pub but very underwhelming - Location Half size bed and flies
- Keown (6/5): - Good location. Can only check in when the pub is open. Bed didn't have a proper blanket, so I was cold.
- Johannes (10/5): - No kettle to make a cuppa
- Ben (8/5): A great choice for those looking for character in the places they stay. - It is a very old pub, so the rooms are small but full of character. The beds were quite comfortable. Downstairs was the old pub with its own beer brewed on the premises. A fantastic little stay for those into this sort of thing. Nothing really, all rather comfortable.
- Shivneil (7/5): -
- Shiori (6/5): -
- Christina (2/5): - It was horribly dirty, like no one even vacuumed the floor in years. Beds were uncomfortable and broken, very cold, bright from the street lights and noise at night. Horrible experience!
- Janice Margaret (6/5): - Pretty old and needs a good refurbishing, the shower head and associated attachment to the shower wall was hanging on byva threadcwas not attached properly. I managed ok but it was a real challenge to stop it fallingboff tgexwall.
- Warrick (3/5): - Location only Crack in basin. Dirty floor. Spring sticking out of bed. Beds poorly made. Mattress too big for base. Shower rose broken.....
- Hayden (7/5): -
- Patrick (2/5): - They tried to over charge on the parking, even though its advertised cheaper....stairwell stank of urine,
- Andre (8/5): - Good based on price. Bathroom is a bit cramped and had some noisy people upstairs
- Britz (10/5): Amazing - Love the vibe and set up, friendly and welcoming That there was no option for a nice breakfast at your lovely pub
- Nick (5/5): -
- Theresa (4/5): - Location No housekeeping. Restaurant is not operational. Lack of maintenance takes away from what should be a charming experience in an historic building
- Eleanor (7/5): Good -
- David (6/5): - Checking in was a bit difficult as you have to do it at the restaurant that is attached. This might be because it is the off season or because there are only a handful of rooms.
- Delynah (4/5): Disappointing -
- Jacqui (6/5): - Loved the old building, but my room was on top floor and there was no lift, and there were no extra blankets provided so I was cold and there was a leaking cistern somewhere
- Jenna (6/5): Pleasant - Easy to access. Older style. Shower was clogged.
- Chieh-Hsin (10/5): - Lovely staff. Walkable. Central.
- Philip (10/5): - A little noise from the karaoke bar
- Jean (7/5): Good -
- Olha (3/5): I will not book this hotel again for myself or my employees, and I also cannot recommend it. - Location, bed The room was dirty, with bottle caps on the floor. There was trash on the windowsill outside. The most unpleasant part was that after putting my food in the small fridge in the evening, I found it completely frozen in the morning — I had to throw the vegetables away because of that.
In the bathroom, the drain was in a small pit and was covered with a towel on the floor. When I stepped on the towel, not expecting a hole underneath, I twisted my ankle.
As expected, the bar/restaurant was open until late at night and it was loud, though bearable. The street is quite busy.
The only positive thing was the location and normal bed.
- Terry (7/5): Wife and I up from the SI. Haven’t been in Auckland for 15 years. Spent an enjoyable few days. Harbour cruise , sky towe - Great location in cdb. Comfortable bed. Good shower. Approachable, helpful and friendly staff. Reasonable price. Not a problem for us but rooms are upstairs. No lift.
- Chadb17 (8/5): Shakespeare brewery - We are at the brewery.
Food was good but expensive.
Played pool. Had the old time pub feel.
It was not crowded. TVs had sports on and that was nice.
After a long day of walking the beer 🍺 tasted good. The area streets are nice and clean. Old feel with new.
- Patricia (5/5): great location but I was disappointed in the quality of the room - location, staff. restaurant rooms were below par
- Phil (8/5): - Great food & beer in the pub. Brilliant location. Accommodation well past its best, but good vibe. WOuld stay there again!
- Chris (1/5): Bad -
- Kautai (10/5): Exceptional - I like it so quiet and also it goods you have restaurant and bar don't need for me to get out for food😊
The main thing for me I so close to my church, the Catholic church!!! The steps not a lift and it also put me on high level 😊
- peterbU2623AJ (4/5): Never Recommend - For starters , a room was on the second floor, and there was no lift in the building.
My wife was on crutches.
We had actually booked 2 days, and when we requested a refund on the 2nd day, we declined.
The barman was friendly enough but obviously his hands were tied so I would never recommend this place unless you were staying in the city and going nowhere because packing was also a big deal and expensive.
The room itself was very pokey and the bed was very uncomfortable.
- Samuel (7/5): Good - Great location, love the old building Be mindful an old building comes with issues, and some of the amenities were a little worn and damaged, but its an old pub, what do you expect
- Peter (2/5): - We requested a Queen size bed and got a double bed
- Kim (9/5): Superb -
- Steven (2/5): Very poor - The closeness to downtown auckland The beds were lumpy. You could feel the springs. One of the beds was a double base with a queen mattress. The shower head was broken & we kept getting hit in the head. There was a cockroach in the bathroom on the first night. The extractor fan was dusting as hell. There were cracks around the walls and windows. One of the lights was hanging from the ceiling. There was a piece of gib slapped up beside this light. Overall, for a historical hotel, the upkeep is poor for what I paid.
- Peter (6/5): Pleasant -
- Ann (8/5): Very good -
- Enis (4/5): - Stayed in a room converted from attic, room was very noisy from various fans on the roof.
- Enis (4/5): - Wi-Fi not reliable.
- Carolyn (8/5): Very good - Restaurant service a little slow 55 minutes for a fish meal.
- Roseanne (8/5): Good location in Auckland CBD - Nice hotel above a brew pub so can get a bit noisy at night but not too bad. The building is historic so no elevator but the staff helped me with my bags. Many things within walking distance.
- Douglas (7/5): Good -
- Collings (8/5): Very good -
- Roxanne (5/5): Passable -
- Lindsay (9/5): Superb - Excellent food friendly staff Looking a bit tired compared to the photos on booking.com
- Chantal (6/5): - The other options in town are way better value for money cheaper parking
- Judi (1/5): Never coming back - 0 out of 10. - Nothing. The room was mildewed and smelled horrible. The staff was not communicative - didn’t answer the phone or any messages on booking.com. There was no parking and no elevators. The food was greasy. There was no one on site in the evening to ask for help. The hotel is atop a bar - and there was constant noise and smoking - LOUD noise, until 3AM - and again, no one to discuss with. This was a horrible stay.
- Nettie (6/5): Shakespeare hotel - No one was there when I arrived. Doors all locked. Rang bell. Nothing. Luckily someone was coming out and we were able to store luggage.
No hair dryer.
I didn’t have right outlet converter. They did lend me one!!!
Good location and close and walkable for sites!
- Karl (2/5): - Refused to offer a refund despite being unable to access the hotel to check in
- kevin (2/5): Old and dirty - While the staff were nice and very helpful , they were battling a building that is old, worn out, and dirty. I have a video of me opening my door with a credit card slipped into the gaping space in the door jamb. Not using the key! The air conditioner was always dripping on the bed and floor and soaked everything which is why it smelled like a swamp. The coffee pot has mold all inside it. Yuck. Cockroaches in bathroom. No lift up 3 flights. Location is fine but this is an old and running brewery pub downstairs. Smells like it. Keep the air conditioner off, open the windows and spray for bugs if you stay here. No paid parking either. Price was great though but we still left early. Not for normal travelers.
- Administrator (3/5): Poor -
- Sharon (10/5): Exceptional - Nice and clean Nothing was allgood
- Mark (8/5): Very good - Reasonably convenient Nothing un toward
- Rachel (5/5): Passable -
- Alyssa (8/5): Very good - stayed for one night and it was perfect, very clean and hospitable
- Carsten (6/5): Pleasant - Central location, very friendly staff. The toilet was broken in our first room, but the staff relocated us to a different room without hesitation.
- Chrisjones3550 (2/5): Avoid like the plague ! Dirty old hotel - Avoid like the plague … 🙈
We cancelled our booking after checking out a room the day before . The room was small, smelly , dirty fitted with old worn out carpets .
It may be the oldest hotel in Auckland and so is the interior and fittings .
No lift - 4 / 5 flights of stairs - stair and landing also dirty fitted old dirty carpets .
- Lurcelle (8/5): - Courteous staff.
No elevator is the main negative concern, but the staff were very helpful in assisting us to carry our luggage up to the 3rd floor.
- Marion (1/5): Awful. - Worst place we have ever stayed. We have traveled a lot including overseas. This property took our money and then gave us a door code that did not work to check in after hours. I tried and a security guard from the nightclub next door also tried. I called both the regular number and 0800 number listed for emergency issues numerous times and nobody answered. Never received a response here. We had to get another place to stay. Would like a refund.
- Bhagya (6/5): - Room was on 3rd floor and as this hotel is very old there wasn’t a lift and had to climb the stairs every single time, staff was helpful with carrying luggage’s all the way up and down bless them. Very annoying to back and forth with stairs specially when your room is at level three. I was exhausted.
- Rob (8/5): Very good -
- Cathy (10/5): - This historic tavern is well-preserved and well run.
My partner & I stayed in-house but had our meals in the bar downstairs and enjoyed the boutique beer/cider.
The atmosphere is relaxing & the meals well-presented and very enjoyable. The staff were very welcoming and helpful with any enquiries. The ladies toilet was the only disappointment: it is in dire need of a makeover as it was pretty old, messy & needing some repairs in the walls, etc.
- James (1/5): The staff was great the room was terrible and Booking.com is a scary uncle. - Location great. Staff fantastic. Worst tiny room I have stayed in 70 years. I blame booking.com for false advertising. On fourth floor o elevator. Room was the size of a federal prison cell. Again I blame Booking.com for not knowing what they are advertising and of course they get paid and we of course have no recourse. We travel a lot and I will share my thoughts about Booking.com with everyone meet. The room was a closet with dangerous low ceilings and nowhere to sit or turn around.
- Elaine (5/5): Passable -
- Kathleen (7/5): Low cost, acceptable accommodation in Central Auckland - Great location, lovely helpful staff. Small building with old world charm. Other guests were quiet and polite. Restaurant was good. Good value for money in this location. Water kept running in the toilet after flushing. We stayed over a weekend and hotel staff who could help were hard to find. Our room was not serviced while we were there. The room was smaller than we expected and did not have adequate space for our luggage. Do be aware there is no lift, and rooms are up two flights of stairs.
- Olivia (8/5): Great location Great food Great staff - The food was amazing The room was no clean , dirty hand prints on the wall and bathroom,
- John (7/5): Good - Location There were lots of tea and coffee but no milk. When asked for milk, they gave us more tea and coffee but no milk.
- Cian (7/5): Good -
- Emma (4/5): Disappointing -
- Catherine (8/5): Historic hotel in great location. - I arrived in the morning when the hotel doors were locked. I had to ask a guest to let me in so I could store my bags until I could check in. The staff, mostly European, were very accommodating and friendly, and they remembered my name. I got plenty of exercise walking up and down the stairs to my room on the third floor. I ate dinner in the on site restaurant most of the 7 days of my stay, and it was quite good. They need to install a guest laundry.
- Taraglenn (1/5): I did not stay and booked in elsewhere it was cancelled and I was still charged - Nothing it was not suitable and cancelled but was still charged even though I spoke to them in person at 10am not long after I had booked the venue I viewed it and cancelled and booked elsewhere Everything
- Willow (4/5): - I emailed support twice asking about check in and never heard back. We were not aware that the whole hotel would be shutdown with check in being at 2pm. I emailed asking before our stay if we could check in before 2, if we knew this was not possible we would have stayed elsewhere. We ended up missing our booked tours on Waiheke Island which was a shame.
- Karl (7/5): Comfortable, quirky and cheap but also far from luxurious - Great comy bed and nice bed linen.
Great location.
Plenty of character Room a bit overdue for renovation and facilities a bit run down but for the price, the room was fair.
- Roger (4/5): - Dirty sheets
Very tired
- Melissa (5/5): More like a hostel than a hotel. - Good location, comfy bed, mini fridge and soap/shampoo. Cheap accommodation so can't expect a lot more. The barman is also the "receptionist". You're made to feel like a nuisance when checking in at the bar. Remember ear plugs. There was a wet, used towel still in the bathroom, so unsure whether the room was cleaned.
- Megan (7/5): Good - Really great location and staff, definitely a good place if you're wanting to stay in the CBD Had a musty smell, carpet could do with updating. Shower head also needed fixing
- Shenee (6/5): - Was average for the price.
- Isabelle (2/5): Not a good choice - Location good. When I arrived at the Shakespeare it was locked. No one was there. I spent a half hour in the street after my 20 hour flight. The contact phone number did not answer. I left several messages. Finally reached someone an hour later. Very expensive for this small room on the third floor with no elevator.
- Natalie (5/5): Great location - but mind the mould - If you're looking for a central location to shower and sleep on a budget while you're in Auckland, this place will work great! The staff, location, and price were amazing. The bar downstairs had a great vibe. The room came with a mini fridge, heat pump/air con, and bathroom with a shower. The bar was pretty loud when we arrived just after 2pm, but we could barely hear it at all when in our room. There was mould on the ceiling in the bathroom, the shower didn't drain properly, and the blanket on the bed consisted of a faux mink blanket between two top sheets. It was also up on the third floor (ground floor and first floor were for the bar, second floor and third floor were the rooms) - so only good if you're able bodied.
- Prajna (2/5): - This is a very unpleasant experience of my life. We booked Rayland through Expedia today and when we arrived to hr motel they said they don’t have the bookings and there is no rooms available. We then spoke to customer service at Expedia and they couldn’t resolve that issue and then we paid double the amount to book the Shakespeare hotel for our stay.
THIS IS MY WORST EXPERIENCE EVER !!!!
The rooms are unclean, aircon isn’t working. The lights are not working, there is no hot water in the shower. The toilet have poo stain on the toilet which wasn’t cleaned before we came in.
There is no phone to call the staff members, I have all the photos if you need.
My family/friends have been using Expedia for all the bookings but I am going to recommend to stop promoting Expedia and booking through you because it was such a pathetic experience. NEVER BOOKING THROUGH EXPEDIA EVER AGAIN !!!
- Jo-Ann (6/5): - Lovely and comfortable but getting a bit tired. Room needs a good paint. Food was very good.
- Donald (8/5): - The room was clean and quiet. It would have been nice to have some milk for a cup of tea but the clesner did not understsnd my request duebto very limited english, otherwise it was good
- Matt (6/5): - Kool location
- Gustav (2/5): - Room was dirt, mold in the shower, very noisy, parking is not included and an extra $50, there no reception and you have wait for drunks at the bar get the key from the bartender. Would not recommend it at all.
- Addison (10/5): - Great stay
- Johannes (8/5): Very good -
- Clarke (8/5): Very good - Close to the casino for parking. Handy location. The building has historic value. The bar is great. All good.
- Mark (8/5): Great location friendly accommodating staff - Central great location It’s an older hotel
- Young (8/5): Good stay, well priced, great staff. - The staff member was really helpful when we had a slight mix up with our booking Booking.com need to make their room listings more accurate
- Tracey (7/5): Step back in time - Good location, budget friendly accommodations steeped in history.
