- Elizabeth (10/5): - This hotel is a hidden gem! It’s a heavenly getaway for anyone wanting to relax in a comfortable room by the sea with an outstanding view. The private porches with hammocks are a lovely way to relax. The food at the restaurant is delicious (especially the green ceviche!) and they will bring meals or drinks right to you. The staff could not be more accommodating. Fantastic getaway!

- Claudio (6/5): - Lots of stairs with uneven steps. The rooms are nice and clean but their bathroom is difficult to use. Every time someone gets a shower the whole bathroom is wet! We had to ask for a squeegee. And if someone is showering no one else can use the toilet. Staff is good and helpful. They have stairs to the access the ocean so you can swim in the ocean but there’s basically no beach. Overall a Fair Hotel for someone who wants a place to stay and explore the island with a golf cart.

However if you’re not able to climb uneven rocky stairs beware. It’s part of the charm but it’s a workout. Some loud noise from hotel renovation and boat partiers. Overall a lovely place. Fair prices. I would happily return.

- Sophie (6/5): Mixed feelings - Mixed feelings. The staff are really wonderful. But the room we stayed in was not very nice. The bedsheets were stained, the beds not comfy & everything felt tatty. Examples: the shower curtain was pretty dirty, there were chunks of wood out of the front door, the lampshade was super old and just looked generally run down. The shower was all over the place and water didn’t flow in a single direction. It needs a good lick of paint and some TLC. The breakfast was not great, a bowl of yogurt and some bread rolls is not ideal maybe some croissants and actual milk instead of powdered creamer would be a nicer touch! That being said if you want a quiet location this is great. The staff as I mentioned can’t do enough for you and are very kind. The place just needs a lil TLC although other reviewer photos I see are nicer than the room we had.

Staff very helpful and hardworking, several restaurants and a small market within walking but we did enjoy our cart for both the hot day and windy day. Con’s- loud boats anchor off shore, same as on playa Norte where we stayed earlier. Rooms could use some upgrades- lampshades, curtains, simple things but room were definitely comfortable

- Matthew (10/5): - My time at La Joya was fantastic. The staff are unbelievably friendly. The room was perfect for me and the staff went out if their way to ensure my stay was great. Hector was unreal and helped with every single thing I needed. The food was delicious and the hotel was the perfect place for me to unwind and kick back. I’d definitely return here the next time I visit the island. Missing it already!!
- Erick (10/5): - The hotel itself is wonderful - hence the 5 star rating. The rooms are a little dated but are clean, have great views and provide you with comfortable beds and everything else you need to enjoy your stay. Breakfast, lunch and dinner on your balcony is a dream and was one of my favorite things. The property is located on a slightly steep hillside that cascades down to the sea. Those with mobility issues should be aware that there are many steps and there isn’t an elevator. A note on the surroundings and what I would change if I visited again. We preferred this end of the island. In my opinion, it’s much easier to relax. It’s quieter and there are far less people compared to the Playa Norte/Downtown area. We broke our trip up into two stays with Hotel La Joya being our first and then we moved up to a hotel close to Playa Norte. Next time, I would probably stay here the whole time and seek out a good deal for an extended golf cart rental.

- Katherine (10/5): Super Charming, a Diamond in the Rough - This hotel is a hidden gem and we are so lucky to have stayed here. This property is overflowing with old charm. Beautiful hotel on a cliffside with ocean views and ocean access, a pool, restaurant/bar, and very nice staff. My husband and I are childless, budget travelers in our 20s, but we chose to spend a little more for a room with an ocean view and it was 1000% worth it. The staff brought breakfast to our patio every morning and we felt spoiled. We were walking distance from a few restaurants, stores, recreation areas, and Punta Sur (10 mins). Food and drinks at the restaurant were great. Also the AC in the room was excellent and much needed. For us, this property was nearly perfect. However, it is a property with character, so there are some quirks. It is not the most updated, the wifi isn’t the greatest, and it didn’t seem the most handicap accessible (lots of stairs). The continental breakfast is a basket of rolls, sliced fruit, yogurt, OJ, and coffee (eggs, meat, pancakes, etc. available for an additional charge). For us, this was not a problem, but let this set your expectations accordingly.

- Ingrid (8/5): - I have mixed feelings about this property; the staff is fantastic. I don't have anything bad to say about the service. The hotel itself could have some improvement, I think I just had the bad luck of booking my stay so late that I ended up paying around 300 bucks the night, and that didn't feel worth it. The rooms are big enough and comfortable but at 300 bucks the night it felt that something was lacking. For future guests of this property, this hotel is located in the southeast part of the island; you'll need a taxi to go to the downtown area or Playa Norte, the best beach on the island. Bring bug spray because the mosquitos in the outdoors are terrible. This hotel has water filters so that was a good amenity, there is beach access, but it's very rocky so bring water shoes. The hotel is also close to Garrafon, where you can do snorkeling and Punta Sur where you can watch the sunrise.

The room was clean. The grounds well taken care of. The beds for Mexican standards were pretty good. A bit firmer than I like but not a concrete block. Cons: The room was small and a bit dated. The bathroom needs a remodel and we had zero water pressure. There are lots of stairs but wasn’t a problem for us. The location can be a pro or con. We loved being away from the craziness of centro but that’s not for everyone. The staff and views absolutely make the place the gem that it is. I would stay again.

- Verified traveler (4/5): Would prob recommend pre-covid times but not now - It’s obvious covid has greatly impacted this part of the island. I could see this being a great place to stay when the island was thriving. As it stands, the hotel is understaffed and because of this, the kitchen is no longer open for dinner and the pool bar is barely open with no clear schedule. Most of the restaurants nearby stop serving food around 8pm. The rooms could benefit from a bit of an upgrade but the view is gorgeous. The breakfast/lunch is good.

The view from our room was spectacular. The place could use some attention( run down) to detail making the ambience a little warmer and cozy. Chairs, lawn chairs in the pool area need an upgrade. They could use better lighting in the pool area. Little Xmas light around pool bar etc. Hector the bartender made outstanding margaritas and daiquiris(best I ever had!) He was very gracious and attentive to our needs. The food was wonderful as well! Overall we had a wonderful stay!

Located at the south end of the island and very quiet. About a 10 min Moto ride to North Breach where the ferry comes in. Close to the zip line area.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We have stayed at adorable little hotel two times and each time we are amazed by how charming it is! The views!!!! I could hang out on my patio all day and look at the water! We love having breakfast delivered on our patio every morning! This hotel is located on the very quiet south end of the island away from all the restaurants and shops although there are a few places to eat with in walking distance. We usually stay a few nights here then head to the north end of the island for a few nights. Definitely a place to go if you wanna get away from it all and this little hotel really makes you feel like you are in paradise! Just know that it is not adult only and sometimes you share a pool with energetic children!

- Christina (10/5): Hidden Gem with a Fabulous Staff - Looking for a peaceful island getaway? A place with and near many amenities—bar, infinity pool, restaurant with fabulous food—but without lots of loud, obnoxious tourists? Amazing sunset views from a huge balcony, complete with hammock, rocking chairs, and a table? Most of all, do you want to feel truly and sincerely welcomed, and truly and sincerely like the staff where you are staying? At a very affordable price? Then book a stay at Hotel La Joya now!!! This hidden gem is not sleek and glitzy: it’s warm and colorful, with lovely Mexican tiles, and quite homey. The food is outstanding: I had a “to die for” chicken mole with rice on my balcony while watching the sun set one night. It was sheer heaven here on earth. The hotel is located on the quieter, south end of the island, about 1/2 mile from Punta Sur; however, there’s plenty to do: Kin-Ha and its amenities are right next door, there’s a fabulous reggae bar and restaurant called The Joint about 5 minutes away walking, Punta Sur itself, a little beach right in front of Hotel La Joya, and cab rides into centro are cheap and readily available. Best part of all: the staff!! Hector, Oswaldo, everyone! I can’t wait to return with my family.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Small boutique hotel with 14 rooms set on a hillside overlooking the beautiful blue waters and, in the distance the Cancun skyline. This is more of a true Mexican style architecture and furnishings. Steep stone steps leading down to the pool area are not for everyone. This is our go to hotel on Isla after staying at Izla, Mia Reef, Privlages Alux.

- James (10/5): - The private balcony with rockers and hammock were so nice. The pool was clean and very well maintained. The path down to the ocean was accessible and had a small pool available for swimming. It was very quiet and the customer service was excellent. There are many great food options in the area for it to be on the south end of the island. There’s a public sea side walking trail to the point south that was very relaxing. The views from the balancing are exquisite!
- Rob (10/5): - This boutique hotel on the south (quiet) side of Isla Mujeres is a gem. With many rooms offering jaw-dropping view of magnificent turquoise waters and of the Cancun high-rises on the horizon, you might not feel a need to ever walk out your door. Its location on the south side is quieter and more relaxing than the north side; but a taxi can whisk you to its bustling bars and restaurants in 10 minutes. The staff are wonderful, courteous and always willing to serve, day or night. Only one time in my life did I ever enjoy a hotel with a better view -- and that was an overwater bungalow in the Maldives that cost $800 a night. This is a true value you'll always remember.

- Schmeds (8/5): - The location was quiet and peaceful; such a nice change from the opposite end of the island. We had a fantastic view of the water from our private deck. We chose to stay, relax, and eat right there as there was no need to venture elsewhere. This place is a hidden gem and if we return to Isla Mujeres again, we will definitely book here.
- Michael (8/5): Great views, great staff, units need work - The room, on arrival had problems with the plumbing and the A/c was not working. The staff did not have another room to move us to that night. The next morning we were relocated to another room that had working a/c and plumbing. The staff makes this place, they are 5 star and work harder than any other hotel staff in Mexico. Owners need to put some money into rooms and pay the staff more for the excellent work they do to make it "RIGHT"
