Guest Reviews
- Stefan (9/5): -
- Niels (7/5): -
- Susan (7/5): - Lage super Fehlende Steckdosen, kein Fernseher, Zimmer relativ dunkel,für ein Frühstücksei bzw. Cappuccino sollte man Extra zahlen…

- bare (6/5): Super Lage, stilvolles Hotel, nettes Personal.

- Felix (10/5): Exceptional -
- Malte (9/5): Superb -
- Janine (8/5): Very good -
- Isabel (7/5): Good - Very stylish Interior and friendly staff. It would have been great to know beforehand that no staff will be at the property after 15.00 o Clock and until the whole next day because of Christmas. Which is fine, when knowing in advance. Locked keycards and passcodes aren’t that easy for elderly people and so there was help required.
Also the room was very cold although the heating was on. Maybe because it is an old building the thermal insultation wasn’t that great …
- Lily (10/5): Exceptional -
- Raila (10/5): Amazing comfort and design - Everything Nothing
- Tdalhoefer (4/5): terrible experience - not recommendable - POSITIVE
Very nice location right by the river where you can watch cruise ships and big container vessels going in and out of the harbour. Nice for walking around in the neighbourhood (Treppenviertel).
NEGATIVE
Where to start.... When we checked in we were told that as default rooms are being cleaned every other day. We stayed two nights, so the only standard cleaning would have been on the day of our departure. Our room got cleaned after the first night, the room of our friends didn't. A broken shower didn't fixed. The mini bars were all empty, which is especially annoying if the staff leaves the hotel at 9pm which means no more bar service either. No information whatsoever on wifi code, breakfast hours, public transportation etc on check-in. We asked for wifi details on day 2 and got a code that didn't work. So back to the front desk, where the guy in charge first replied 'Well it works on my phone' before he tried it himself on our phone and learned that it did NOT work. He promised to take care of it and come back to us. Never saw him again. The list goes on, but I guess you get the picture by now.
- 911HHM (2/5): vacation - single rooms are extremely small ( these look like storerooms turned into a bedroom ), they are dirty and they smell smell very strange, no conditionning and leaks. The interior of the hotel is very poorly serviced and smells badly in general, looks so bad that you would be afraid to sit on the sofa at the entrance. It is very noisy in general. The service and some employees are impolite and in the evening it turns into a ghost house ( maybe better for customers not too face poor service ). Very hard to access and the parking outside is not maintained.
Only positive is Elbe view and the outside looks cool if you want some selfies... but for the outrageously high prices for that kind of storeroom and cheap furnitures better you look for other hotels in blankenese or Hamburg with amazing views.
- Renehorsch (6/5): Quite OK but overpriced for the current condition - Beautiful location, beautiful building, but needs a lot of TLC before it’s worth the price.
Positive:
- staff, all great and very friendly
- bed
- location/view (if you have the right room)
Negative:
- price/performance ratio
- offer of Bulgari on the site, but we got some cheap general stuff
- carpets on the floor, quite “dark” feeling
- room smelled strange
So, after an extensive renovation and a reduction of the price, we would consider to return
- Elena99AU (8/5): Nice hotel, budget room not worth the money! - My husband and I stayed in a double room last year and it was fantastic! We had everything we needed however we recently stayed in a budget double room and this has turned us off coming back! Although everything was clean, it wasn’t actually located in the building but instead in a smaller building at the back of the hotel, it was a very small room and didn’t come with basics like a kettle or tissues! When I asked for a box of tissues for my daughter who was unwell, I was told they don’t have any. I understand we booked a budget room however for a 4.5* hotel I would have expected some of the standard items that you’d expect to find in almost any other hotel. The staff were nice but not as friendly as last time. The hotel is beautifully located right by the water and a great location for walks!
- DrB_GER (8/5): Nice view to harbour traffic - Looking to large ships while enjoying a tasteful cup of coffee or tea is the highlight of this location.
Especially recommendable is the Rhubarb Meringue Tart (Rhabarber Baiser Torte).
The staff is a bit stiff but quick.
- Jack_Sheldon1 (10/5): Awesome! - Really enjoyed my stay here. Have been in Hamburg many times for business but decided this time to stay a bit outside the bustle of the inner city. I'm glad I did. The most striking facet of the hotel was the friendliness of the staff. They were super helpful whenever I needed anything.
What sets this hotel apart in my mind is, well, it's a white castle on a beach with a view of passing cruise ships the likes of Queen Mary or Aida right in front of your nose. Also, the beautiful area of downhill Blankenese makes for a runners paradise. I ran each morning along the water and gorgeous houses. What is weird but so cool is that while on the outside this hotel is all luxurious old money Blankenese beauty, the inside is a designer hotel where one might think they're in Soho, NYC. Incredibly chic and comfortable room. I already booked my next stay as I left. Will in the future be staying here when business takes me to Hamburg - jack
- HSV1887HH (10/5): What a gorgeous boutique hotel! - A truly fantastic, family run hotel. What did we like besides the location (right next to the beach)? Great clean modern room with nice bathroom and Bulgari cosmetics, really soft towels and River view. Fantastic breakfast (fresh cut fruit salad with exotic fruits, nice omelette, fresh orange juice, huge tea selection - 12 varieties - and nice coffee. Wonderful hotel interior. And last but not least: a truly familiar, cordial atmosphere (I was even offered head lights because I went running in the dark). My personal view: it is hard to find a better boutique hotel. I will definitely come back to Strandhotel Blankenese instead of going to Clipper Elb Lodge or Hotel Hafen Hamburg.
- Alice_the_wonderland (10/5): cosy afternoon - we did not stay at the hotel, but it was a good surprise to discover the renovated bar-restaurant with limited - basic cuisine. Extremely relax and cosy atmosphere ; the ideal place for an afternoon tea or a classy drink.
- Newkneebb (6/5): Boutique hotel with great views of the Elba - My husband and I were invited to a 50th birthday party in Blankenese and this hotel was suggested to us!
What a lovely boutique hotel based by the Elba! A grand looking building with a warm welcome was our first impression and a good start!
We arrived early and the hotel looked after our luggage and ensured it was placed in our room for when we returned later!
Room 8 on the top floor - there are no lifts! Had a beautiful view over the Elba and we enjoyed watching cargo moving up and down the river.
Breakfast is continental style and served between 07.30 and 13.00 at the weekend! Key cards are unmarked and used for the main door (after 21.00) and rooms! We were only given one card - perhaps providing two would be better!
The hotel was warm - in public areas in particular!
A fantastic location if you want to be by the water but a walk to the centre of town! Taxis cost about 13.00€ - there is a snellbus - not sure how good or cost!
The hotel is slightly overpriced in my view but that comes from the location by the river and Blankenese!
- MTDMDB (4/5): Far from Hamburg, an expensive hotel with small rooms - We stayed at this hotel in August of 2015. I was underwhelmed.
PROS: Location, as long as you don't have too many plans in Hamburg, which is far away (at least 30 mins by taxi). It's at the end of the main beach street in the suburb of Blankenese, offering lovely views of the river and a nice strip of beach. It's relatively quiet. One can walk to local restaurants or (up, up, up) to public transportation to go in to Hamburg (a 10-15 minute walk, somewhat strenuous, especially in heels). Taxis are readily available and expensive.
CONS: The rooms are small. The carpet in our room was stained from water that had come in through the window. The bathrooms are tiny and have no outlets, and the showers are of a "modern design" that has no closing door, meaning that water streams onto the bathroom floor when you shower. No bathtubs. The bathrooms are TINY and two people can't stand in them at once.
We stayed in the hotel during a heat wave. It was sweltering! There was no air conditioning and no offer of fans, although the concierge had one blowing at her desk (and did not offer it to her panting, sweaty guests). Service was lackluster and the internet free but very, very inefficient (low range and very low speed). They offer amenities like bicycles to guests, but charge for their use; indeed, there is a fee for EVERYTHING in this hotel. On my last morning I had a quick cup of coffee before leaving for the airport, and 4 Euros was added to my bill. I am accustomed to staying in nicer hotels, and usually expect a coffee and tea station to be free of charge and accessible throughout the day to guests. Not so at the Blankenese. Given the room rate, I was disappointed that they nickeled and dimed everything else. Breakfast was delicious (an offer of eggs with a choice of meat, as well as an ample buffet of cheeses, sweet and savory spreads, jams, fruit, yogurt, etc - a pretty typical German fare) but again, $$. All in all I would not stay here again, especially if planning to see the sights in Hamburg.
- Walhoo (6/5): Could be a great place for a bit of relaxation - Very nicely renovated building close to the Elbe river, at the end of a small resident street in one of Hamburgs nice downdown areas. At least 30', but on weekdays more likely up to 60' drive to the city center. Own parking. Great views of the river Elbe. Nice pavilion not far from the river front. Could be nice to sit there and watch the ships passing by, but the tables and chairs were - despite the nice whether - not set and no service was offered outside. Answer to the question if we could have a drink there: 'No, but you have drinks in your mini bar in your room.' nicely furnished but partially very small rooms/bathrooms for the price (15/2.5 sqm). Clairaudient building, you can hear every voice from the corridor and even the water running in the other guest room. At the time we were staying at the hotel a wedding party was held. So from afternoon on no use of the restaurant or bar was possible for the hotel guests! That's not what you can expect from a hotel for this price.
Yes, it could be a nice place to stay, when you are willing to commute for 30+ minutes to the city and if he service would be better.
- chillar (8/5): Above average hotel in the wealthy area of Hamburg - We were lucky to hit one of Booking.com's hot deals and got the suite with seaview and balcony for as little as 60 euro.
If it wasn't for that we probably wouldn't have found this nice little spot in Hamburg. It's situated a bit out of town, so definitely preferable with a car. The area is lovely though and all houses are beautiful and situated on a hill, so it reminds a bit of the Amalfi coast in Italy. Good restaurants are scattered all along the waterfront too.
The room we got was in fine shape and very modern. Bathroom a bit older, but nothing worth complaining about when you got such a nice view. Service was below average, but she was probably just pissed that we got the room so cheap.
- DocHolidayLondon (4/5): Faded charm - Picturesque riverside location but a bit out of the way and a pain to get to if you don't have a car. Very nice building from the outside but rather faded and tired-looking on the inside. Our room clearly hadn't been hoovered in a while when we moved in, and the bathroom/shower unit in particular was a bit dated and not exactly sparkling clean. Very thin walls also - apparently it's a listed building and it's a major hassle to sort this out. Finally, the whole hotel seemed to suffer from a mosquito infestation! We stayed on the 2nd floor but we heard the rooms on the 1st floor are a bit nicer and perhaps more frequently used and cleaned. Breakfast was nothing out of the ordinary, and overall we felt the hotel was overpriced for what it is.
In summary: Nice if you have a car, don't mind staying away from Hamburg city centre, and like to wake up by the riverside and watch the ships go by. Not so nice if you appreciate clean rooms, modern bathrooms, and indulgent breakfasts, like we do.
