- anukrti (10/5): Very atmospheric and relaxing. - We loved everything about the ryokan - the location, the beautiful Japanese decor, the exceptional cleanliness and the excellent onsen experience. The staff was polite and helpful and in particular Miku-san, Karen-san and Rina-San stood out for their warmth. We are vegetarian and had informed the ryokan beforehand. Whilst meals were included in our package, the ryokan expressed inability to prepare vegetarian fare given the holiday week. We were provided a vegetarian meal only one night and for breakfast on the last day. The two meals were exceptional- delicious, very aesthetically presented and seasonal and we enjoyed them very much. It would have made our stay perfect if we were provided vegetarian meals everyday of our stay.

One friend is a vegetarian and we were being charged additional for the vegetarian prepared to replace the Japanese traditional meal. The vegetarian meal was not value for money. Given the amount paid for the stay, we didn't get any value for money in terms of amenities provided, varieties of drinks, availability of coffee in common area.

The staff were very hospitable and did their best to accommodate all our requests. Both breakfast and dinner were excellent—delicious and beautifully presented. - Haojun (9/5): Perfect - The staff there are super amazing, we had some minor issues during our stay. They dealt with the issues perfectly and created wonderful experience. The way they handle complaints really reflected their standards and their values. It may be the problem of last customer who I don’t know why left their very personal clothing at the bathroom at a very secluded corner and caused the cleaner was complained about the hygiene issues. This message is to customers ! Take your personal staff with you, no one want to see any disgusting worn underwear staff hanging in the bathroom behind the door. Remember that !

- Chew (9/5): Very good experience in a traditional ryokan, it makes our Hakodate trip felt so much different. Love it. - It was very personal and attentive from the moment our taxi stopped in front of the ryokan, the staff came out immediately to greet us and take care of our luggage. They even wiped our luggage wheels clean before carrying into the ryokan. Room was old fashioned (well is a ryokan since 1922) but very clean, very well kept, and is very nice to have a different feeling from the usual chain hotel with buffet meals 😆. We had a good rest, very peaceful feeling, private bath was spectacular. It was an experience that we all enjoyed and glad we chose something different to stay at Hakodate. Probably two things: Price is considered kind of steep to us as we have stayed in Toya onsen hotel before and they charged much lower. However this is ryokan style and we had never tried ryokan before, so I am not too sure whether the higher price is normal among ryokan. Another thing to take note is the food. They offered very traditional Japanese authentic food. Many raw and fresh seafood on the plate, so if you don’t like raw food, better mention to them when they send email to inquire. They will take it seriously and plan accordingly. Better don’t ignore their meal requests as they can’t make adjustments when you are at their ryokan.
- Qu (10/5): An unforgettable stay filled with beauty, warmth, and perfect details—we can’t wait to return! - This was our absolute favorite hotel during our entire trip to Hokkaido! The hotel is incredibly beautiful, with aesthetic details everywhere you look. Everything was spotlessly clean, and all the staff were so kind and welcoming. You can even book a private hot spring, which was such a special experience! We chose the breakfast-included option, and it was absolutely amazing—so delicious and abundant. On top of that, the restaurant’s view was breathtakingly beautiful. Our room was simply perfect—we loved it so much! It was spacious, beautifully designed, and had a stunning view of the ocean right outside. We are already looking forward to coming back again in the future! Thank you so much to the Wakamatsu and all the wonderful staff for giving us such a memorable stay. I highly recommend this hotel to everyone!

- Mei (8/5): I had a great time during my visit and would recommend to friends and family. - The food was delicious. But breakfast was more enjoyable to me. The onsen was fantastic. I loved Ryokan's location; it's convenient and near public transit. The hotel was quiet, which I liked. However, it was nearly too quiet because I was traveling alone. The room's arrangement might be my only complaint. Although I enjoyed the ocean view, I wouldn't say I liked the location of the restroom, etc.

The Onsen, could not have been more relaxing, both the private and public ones. The place was spotless as well. It may have been the nicest, fanciest, ritziest place I’ve ever been. It has literally been the best, and I mean the best, part of my entire trip to Japan!! When I get married I want to go back there for my honey moon.

- Hsiang- Fen (10/5): - Small boutique hotel. You hardly see any other guests. Beautifully decorated. Warm welcome tea and snack in the lobby while you wait. True Japanese hospitality. Everything is done with thoughtfulness. The dining room has a great view of the beach. Food was delicious. You get a staff member assigned to your room for your stay. Onsen is small but offers a beautiful beach and ocean view. Enjoyed the experience and the stay. Highly recommend it.

- Le (10/5): - This is a wonderful experience. The room is big, all have huge window/ balcony toward the sea. Hot spring bath is also great. You can book tour private hot spring room. What real impressed me is the food. It worths 1 or even 2 Michelle stars. The breakfast has about 15 items. Dinner omakase list is about foot long…Lol. All at very very reasonable price. In all this is an outstanding hotel with over 100 year history worth every penny.

- Thuy (10/5): Best of the best - Everything about the hotel was so impressive. Room was huge, can properly fit family of 6. Ocean view from the window. We could even open the sliding window to let the breeze in and enjoy the wave sound. The staff was super attentive. Right after checking in, it felt like all the staff knew who we were. Private onsen was exception. Meals were top notch. Location was a bit off but we can live with that while enjoying what the hotel has to offer. Location is not convenient but taxi service available within 2 minutes.

The advertisement text could have been clearer: if you book on the same day, you won't get dinner or breakfast. Also, they give you an energy surcharge upon checkout, which could have been included in the price on Booking.

- James (9/5): Hakodate is a fascinating city and Wakamatsu made it doubly enjoyable. - The dinners were spectacular. I'm not a huge fan of Japanese style breakfast, but everything was fresh and beautifully presented. The room was spacious, well laid out and convenient. I enjoyed opening the window just a crack to hear the sound of the ocean waves. The location was close to a tram stop for easy access to the downtown area. The staff was great! There was little not to like here. The windows facing the ocean had inlaid wire for typhoon protection, but it detracted from the ocean view.

- Lenore (10/5): Traditional Japanese escape - It is a rare opportunity to stay in a place of this caliber. We were given a personal attendant in kimono for the entire of our stay. The views were spectacular and the level of Japanese service was impeccable. The room was beautiful & offered every convenience (loved the espresso maker!). The futon beds were incredibly comfortable! The overall hotel was peaceful and refined. We highly recommend taking advantage of the private onsen. The baths are small, but have everything you need and offer a lovely view of the beach & ocean. The Kaiseki meal did a great job of introducing local specialties with a sense of humor and great play on words. To be honest, for this level of accommodation, we've had better meals, but this is just our impression after one night and one dinner.

The food was very disappointing, and I ended up with food poisoning, which was the first time ever for me in Japan after 15 years. The staff were all very nice, but the food was extremely bland and unimpressive. The tables and chairs were also too small and very uncomfortable.
