Guest Reviews
- Evgeniy (10/5): - El Beaterio is my Go-To hotel whenever i stay in Zona colonial. Centrally located, walk to all the main attractions in the Old town: upscale restaurant literally in the same block! Tons of other dining options, bars, nice park where locals gather in the evening right across the street.
Receptionist Pierre is super friendly and nice! Shows you everything, makes sure you know where everything is, what hours breakfast is etc.
Hotel itself is such a historical jewel! You feel like you enter the Time Machine: lobby, breakfast area, staircase and room itself!
I’m a history buff, so i also love how they have pictures everywhere and a little history written about the old times!
The only thing I’d mention is to be careful when walking up to the second floor, it’s a bit slipper on top when it rains. Maybe owners will see this review and put a rubber mat or something else there as i almost slipped and fall, especially in the evening coming back after a few drinks :)
Otherwise, don’t think twice and book this hotel because you won’t find better value in the area for your money!
- Carlos (4/5): - Only good is historic architecture at hotel. No restaurant, no bar, nothing in the hotel... if you want to sleep with fan and air conditioner that doesn't work, stay here...they gave us an option of another room second night, but air conditioner also didn't get cold... we have to take cold shower to sleep!!! never again!!!
- Luis (10/5): - Staff members are the best. Thanks to Jose and Pier at the front desk my vacation was amazing. I’m coming back for Carnival season. 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
- 719stevenk (10/5): Lovely boutique hotel. - Charming boutique hotel in the heart of the historical district. Both the room and the public areas were lovely. And thank you for that powerful air conditioning! A nice gem at a great price. And that’s all I’ve got, but they’re asking for more.
- Marilyn (6/5): Beautiful building but disappointed with stay. - Beautiful colonial property in the city center. Quiet location, good for a couple of nights.
We like staying at these small boutique style hotels, as the staff tends to interact with the guests. They ask they typical questions, where we are from, what are our plans for the day, make recommendations, etc... That never happened here. Staff did their job, but they were cold. They did their best to answer any questions we may have had, but did not engage otherwise.
- Julia (10/5): - Magical little place perfect for a romantic getaway. Good breakfast included and lovely terrace for happy hour
- Todd (10/5): Historic building in the heart of old-town! - Great experience in the heart of old-town! Friendly place, and quiet location on a small side street. Shower was a bit cramped but worked fine.
- Emilie (6/5): - The location is great - the building beautiful. However my room was the closest to the kitchen and reception desk and the sound proofing almost inexistant. I coule hear all the kitchen noise from my bed. Quite unpleasant especially the bed was soooo comfy - too bad i couldnt enjoy it to the fullest
- Natalie (10/5): - Unique atmosphere; very beautiful rooms and courtyard.
- CLAUDIA (6/5): - There is a Road construction in front of the hotel. They never said that until the day I came, because they send me instructions and I had to walk a few meters. It is fine but I would like to know it before.
- Sabrina (8/5): A peaceful escape - José made our stay more comfortable, as we asked to change rooms since our original room had some mold and I was having a hard time sleeping. Jose accommodated us to a different room and I slept great. It’s a really old building (like 300+ years old) so it was not surprising that there was some moisture, since Santo Domingo is so humid. The Beaterio has a fascinating history and is quite peaceful and quiet.
- Cai (10/5): - amazing location right in colonial zone. room is small but full of charm! might need to watch out for mosquitos if you stay on the ground floor,
;) super friendly staff - would recommend to anyone visiting Santo Domingo!
- Gerard (10/5): - It's located in a colonial building surrounded other buildings and churches of the same era. The hotel is in a perfect location, staff are friendly and the patio and rooftop lounge were very inviting.
- maritza (2/5): - El hotel tiene demasiada humedad, no hay parqueo, el desayuno es bien limitado y no tiene parqueo ni cerca.
- Cassandra (10/5): - Great customer service. Beautiful Spanish style hotel & rooms. The only thing is constant construction outside.
- Susan (10/5): - Always enjoy staying at this unique property. Excellent breakfast. Friendly staff. At the moment road is still under construction but was very manageable by foot. Hotel was making upgrades to inside patio and umbrellas. Would always choose to stay there.
- Massiel (10/5): - This property was very cute and quaint, the staff was very friendly and accommodating but the hotel needs some updating and renovations.
- hajir (10/5): - The roads were under construction
- Ceily (10/5): - Lovely historical property. 10 out of 10.
- Necrisha (10/5): - Charming hotel in the heart of Santo Domingo.
- S-Man283 (6/5): Pretty good, but some carelessness - The building is historical, well-furnished, and the room gives the feeling of a medieval bedchamber. It was well-located to all of the historic district's sites. The breakfast was pretty good with made-to-order eggs. The shower was completely unsatisfactory without adequate pressure. The biggest gripe we had was that we came back after a full day out, only to find that our door had been unlocked and open (we assume after cleaning). As the rooms share a common courtyard, it made us uneasy that anyone could have walked in. There is no key to the front door; you must ring for them to let you in.
- Michael (10/5): Great hotel in the heart of the colonial zone - The property is an old nunnery converted into a very cute boutique hotel. And my AC worked quite well! I really enjoyed this stay.
- RUBEN (8/5): - Nice place to sleep one night
- Liliana (8/5): -
The hotel is surrounded with history, perfectly complementing the charm of the area. The Colonial Zone itself is vibrant and full of culture, and staying at Beatereo felt like stepping back in time while still enjoying modern comforts.
The rooms were clean and well-maintained, offering everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Recommended.
- Daphne (2/5): - No generator supporting AC during power cut. For this price it’s highway robbery
- Martín (6/5): - Las habitaciones podrian mejorar mucho
- Julissa (8/5): - Convenient location. Safe and easy accessibility
- Priscill (10/5): - This is a lovely, small, historic hotel. It is also a museum. The breakfast was hearty and beautifully presented. The neighborhood is going through major restoration, but it was not noisy or inconvenient for us. We stayed there twice during our time in the DR and enjoyed both visits.
- Cylvia (10/5): Excellent, Beautiful romantically Historic - Checking into "El Beaterio Casa Museo". It was like stepping back in time. I was shocked by the beauty and all the historical details provide on plaques in the walls. The walls were built of coral and many details restored to the original state. The internal courtyard is detailed with spanish tile and full of tropical plants. The room were beautifully reminisent of the old world. Bkfast was dominican with a delicious homemade papaya marmalade included with the room. The service was wonderful & helpfull. I would stay here again.
- Steve (10/5): - Return guest, excellent breakfast and front desk (Jose & Marvin) very helpful.
Thank You!
- C (8/5): - We loved the rustic charm, ambiance and amazing Colonial history associated with this hotel. Breakfast was a nice touch with fruits, eggs, juice, pastries and homemade beads.
- Juan (8/5): - Great ambience. Nice staff. Breakfast was ok. But it is a very good option on that price range.
- 608herveb (10/5): the Best in Santo Domingo (value for money) - Amazing location, friendly staff. When you stay at the Beaterio you really feel that you are in Dominican Republic but also are fully vested within the history of the Island. You are half block away of the first university in the Americas.
When i go to Santo Domingo I always stay there.
- Ezrah (8/5): - It’s a historic property so the room wasn’t large, but clean and very convenient location. I would recommend.
- carol (8/5): - The staff were helpful and friendly. The rooms were very clean and comfortable. The breakfast more than adequate very tasty!
- Javier (6/5): - Many problems with bathroom, breakfast not great at all...
Dissappointed
- Perry (10/5): - Absolutely gorgeous place.
- Jose (8/5): - Great stay, great location. A little humidity smell in the room. Breakfast is very good, staff is great and helpful. Location is great. It was in general a good stay.
- Yuri (10/5): Nice hotel with historical sentiment. - Super friendly staff. Love the historical aspect of this hotel. Room was good enough. Breakfast was awesome. Beautiful rooftop with amazing views.
- Tamera (10/5): - This is a very historical property and has been lovingly restored and furnished. I felt like a was sleeping in a piece of history. The breakfast was great and the staff made was feel at home and were extremely friendly and helpful.
- Steve (10/5): - Excellent staff (Thank You Ms. Damaze & Mr. Jose) and customer service. :)
- Janelly (10/5): - Very friendly staff. A nice cozy spot
- 987mayragr (10/5): Best place in SD!! Beyond ur expectations with the service - Amazing service! They actually makes you feel like home, they’re kind and helpful and go beyond your expectations.
The rooms are big and beautiful. The architecture and history of the building are astonishing. You will stay in a piece of history.
- Steve (10/5): - Excellent staff!
- herve (10/5): - just love the place the staff and its location.
- Allan (10/5): - Thank you for the attention
- Joel (10/5): - Beautiful quaint hotel in great location.
- scott (8/5): - Best place to stay in santo domingo zona colonial.
- Lee (10/5): - Historic property with gorgeous spacious rooms and tropical garden.
- Frank (8/5): - I loved this hotel. The style is beautiful. Courtyard was very nice. The staff were nice and breakfast was pretty good.
My only complaint was that my a/c was not working in my room. I complained but they didn’t do anything about it.
- Sightsee808691 (8/5): Great stay in historical Santo Domingo. - My friend and I stayed in El Beaterio for 2 nights on our way in and out of Santo Domingo. Great location in central historic district. Comfortable rooms and great breakfast included. Helpful friendly staff. History surrounding you here. I will return this gem again! Terrific bargain.
- Cesarina (10/5): - Good
- Sasha (10/5): - This property has amazing history and energy and the warmest staff.
- Michael (10/5): Colonial Santo Domingo Hotel - Very friendly staff. Front desk is fluent in English. Very attentive to my needs. Great interior decorations.., it’s like staying in a museum.
Highly recommend if you are looking to stay in the historic district
- alicarp65 (10/5): Charming Sto Domingo - Charming hotel in the historic district with nice breakfast and coffee each morning on a beautiful shady patio. The passion fruit juice was delicious. The rooms were comfortable and cool. Great location walking distance to so much to see in the colonial city. The people were so friendly and accommodating. Would highly recommend.
- normanandsusanp (10/5): Excellent choice in heart of colonial district - Excellent small hotel in the heart of colonial district. Rooms surround lovely outdoor courtyard with rooftop area. Only discovered after our stay. Would highly recommend. Rooms comfortable and clean. Serves good breakfast included. Would stay here again.
- Julia (8/5): Lovely setting. - Great location and history. Excellent breakfast and beautiful setting with a lovely courtyard. The shower in my room did not have a working drain. I asked for this to be fixed (showered in 4 inches of standing water and tiles was slippery from all the soap build up) but sadly it wasn't.
- RORY (10/5): - We loved the quaint old-world charm that the property exudes in La Zona Colonial while being walking distance from many shops, cafes, restaurants, bars and nightlife.
- Edgar (10/5): - Charming hotel in the colonial area, very close to good restaurants. We stayed for 7 nights with the family and discovered something new every day in this charming part of the city. The service was excellent, the breakfast was freshly prepared every morning. I understand this is a very old building so amenities are limited but regardless we had a great time and highly recommend this hotel. Worth noting there are quite a few tourism security guards making sure the area is safe for tourist to walk even late in the evening, se we felt safe the entire time we were there
- Eric (8/5): Decent hotel in nice location. - Great location in heart of colonial old city. The rooms are very rustic. Only thing is that the bed is a bit old and sunk in a lot. But still comfortable. A solid 4 out of 5. But staff wasn’t able to help with luggage. Breakfast okay but wasn’t out of this world like other reviews had said.
- peter (10/5): - An absolutely beautiful setting. Beautiful room. Great breakfast. Wonderful linens on the bed. Polite and professional staff. You can’t ask for more
- cqfp123 (8/5): Hotel in historic building in the Zona Colonial - Stayed for 2 nights. Historic building (old convent) located in the Zona Colonial, within walking distance of many attractions and restaurants. My room was fairly quiet. Good A/C. Minimal room amenities: small safe (too small for laptop), no electric kettle or minifridge. Decent desk area. Comfortable beds and pillows. Very inconveniently located power sockets: under the desk and night stand or low on the wall away from any furniture.
In the bathroom the sink was partially clogged and draining very slowly; it was eventually fixed after two requests. Shower with hot water but low pressure.
Wifi with multiple hiccups. Breakfast buffet with limited selection: excellent fresh fruit, but everything else wasn't that great. They make fresh coffee and eggs but service is slow.
- Vinessa (8/5): - A quaint hotel located in a safe and walkable area. My only negative was that to access rooms on the second floor you are required to walk up in areas that are not covered, which if raining (as it was heavily during my stay) will cause you to get very wet.
- Steve (10/5): - Excellent customer service, breakfast and location.
- ADILKA (10/5): Boutique museum house - Great place, friendly stuff
- Alexander (10/5): - Felt welcome!!
Great place, quiet, walkable, everything is within 10 minutes walk:
- John (8/5): - The property was convenient and beautiful. This place has historical value which was very interesting. I did pay for the nicer room my last night and did not receive the deluxe that is my only real complaint.
- Amrita Devi (10/5): - would more likely to recommend this hotel to my friends. Very friendly staff and comfortable environment.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Very historic and charming - Everything was really quite nice and pleasant. It’s a unique experience in a old world building. For us the rooms are nice for a short stay but perhaps a little small for a long stay. The roof top seating is an excellent feature. The atrium and overall decor as well as historic information was great.
- herve (10/5): - Good location and quiet. bedding could get an upgrade
- Maria (10/5): - Their customer services, is very clean, and knowing how old the building is it history i would go back
- isaacdelarosar (10/5): The best service and view in “La Zona Colonial” - It’s a amazing experience to be in this historic place it’s homey and cozy the service is by far hands down a top 5 in hospitality and customer service they go above and beyond their duty to make you feel at hime near everything and well protected tourist area the rooms don’t have a mini refrigerator so bring a cooler you won’t regret staying in this place.
- roysQ6545TJ (6/5): Quirky hotel with super soft beds - Stayed here for two nights while with a client.
The hotel is an old convent and very quirky. Lots of information about its history is listed around the hotel.
Beds are very soft, a little too soft for me.
Breakfast was ok. Lots of fruit but otherwise a little limited.
The rooms do not have a fridge or really a desk area or comfortable seating. This is a great place to sleep etc (very quiet) but the rooms are a little sparse. I wouldn't recommend it if you want to get any work done while here.
- Kayla (10/5): - Loved this place. It was quiet, peaceful, and friendly. Importantly, it is close to Columbus Square and many, many historic sites. There's a grocery store about a 1 minute walk away, as well as several artisan shops and restaurants about a 5 minute walk away. You really couldn't beat that! The bed was comfortable, the A/C was cold, the shower had very good pressure and hot water. We stayed in a second floor room that was just so cute. Would definitely recommend.
- 578mindyc (10/5): Wonderful stay with historical charm - I stayed in El Beaterio for 4 nights. It’s such a beautiful casa museo located in a quiet area. The room is nice and clean decorated with old maps of La española. The courtyard has lots of sunlight and plants that I enjoyed my breakfast here (though you need to apply mosquito repellent as they are quite active if you come in early morning like 6-8am) Check out the terrace in the early morning and you would get a nice photo with sun rise. The staff here are very nice. I stayed in the room downstair the first night and I asked them to change my room to upper floor as i prefer more natural light in my room and they are really helpful to find a room for me and get it ready after I returned from a city walk tour. The breakfast choices are moderate with eggs, sausage, salamis, toast, fruits and yogurt. They also serve a cup of fresh juice and a big pot of hot coffee. The coffee was always hot no matter how long I had my breakfast which was great for me. I also like the location of El Beaterio a lot. It is close to everything but in a quiet and nice area which I feel safe and calm. The restaurant El Buho a few steps from the hotel serves very nice food with reasonable price. I had ceviche tropical and it was very tasty. I tried 4 restaurants in zona colonial and El Buho was my favorite. Highly recommend to stay in El Beaterio if you want to enjoy colonial charm away from the crowds.
- sheila (10/5): - It is very beautiful and cozy
- OffWeGoTownToTown (10/5): Charming Historic Hotel - Lovely hotel in the center of Zona Colonial without being on the main pedestrian street which would be annoying. The rooms are charming and the staff is very helpful. Nice inclusive breakfast which makes things convenient. Great sky deck if you look for it. Rooms are spacious enough. Nice market is one block away for all your snack/drink needs. Plenty of nice restaurants in the area.
- Erica (6/5): - The hotel had a very cool, historical feel, but they didn’t come clean the room after the first day. There was construction going on early in the morning.
- KylerCA (10/5): Charming hotel in a great location - El Beaterio is a delightful hotel in a historic building. It is 2 blocks off the main pedestrian street of the Zona Colonial in Santo Domingo so is very convenient to explore the Zone but just far enough off the main street to be peaceful and quiet. The staff is very friendly and the breakfast is fresh and delicious.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Beautiful hotel and helpful reception - Hotel was beautiful, room was comfortable and clean. The young man at the front desk helped us to arrange an early morning taxi to the airport. The rooftop terrace was also a nice spot to hang out. Our only negative was the night club around the corner had loud music well after midnight, so if you’re a light sleeper it might bother you. We were there on a Friday so may not be an issue during the week. Would still stay here again.
- Ronnie (10/5): A Gem - What a lovely place, like stepping back several centuries, with the comfort of today. We loved our stay.
- Catherine (8/5): - El Beaterio is charming property and the staff are very friendly. The location is safe and walkable to many restaurants, which is good because on-site dining is not available beyond breakfast.
As other reviewers have said, the breakfast is really lacking. I have never been to a hotel that has so few options at breakfast. Unfortunately during my stay they ran out of pineapple several times because two guests took the entirety of that day's pineapple allowance for themselves. I did see another guest complain and the kitchen staff couldn't do anything about it. This is something management should review, as the lack of options at breakfast is a trend among feedback. The only beverage options at breakfast are juice (if they have it) and coffee. The kitchen staff are perfectly lovely and making the best of the limited options management has given them.
The rooms are comfortable, though not ideal if you're keen on having a lot of natural light. I did like that I didn't have to use the AC in the 30C heat as the rooms keep cool. The shower had good water pressure and enough hot water for me to use.
The hotel is very safe and you have to buzz to be let on the property, which added an extra layer of security. I appreciated that.
Communication in arranging an airport transfer prior to my stay was excellent. Overall, I would recommend this to someone who doesn't need a pool or many options at breakfast and appreciates having security and a good location while in SD.
- Andre (10/5): - Excellent stay. Staff were all very friendly. Ver safe area and only a few short blocks El Conde, restaurants and many historical sites.
- Grace (10/5): - The staff was very friendly and the hotel is beautiful and quiet
- Daniel Frias (8/5): - Great location! Walking distance to the Calle Conde and historic spots in the city.
Free breakfast but it’s the same thing everyday.
Historical building but no pool, gym, etc. or other resort style amenities.
Small rooms but the staff keep it clean.
Staff is nice but the young receptionists need better customer service. The highlight were the kitchen staff during the week and “Daimas” a Haitian Receptionist that works 3 to 10 pm. Super friendly and helpful.
Rooftop terrace is awesome!
- Wayne (8/5): - Everything was great but I would recommend not taking room 1, the noise from the lobby and people constantly walking past was a lot.
- Laura (10/5): - This property is in a colonial building. The rooms are comfortable, clean, and spacious. Really intimate and small great for a good night's rest.
- 222friederikew (10/5): Amazing gem of a hotel in a beautiful city - An amazing little gem of a hotel in an amazing city! First off, you should NOT miss out on visiting Santo Domingo, because it is one of the most fascinating cities that I personally have visited in the world. There's just so much history there and Caribbean spirit, and beautiful scenery and buildings.
And then the hotel, please do stay there. It is located in one of the old town's little streets and has a beautiful historic interior, which is also explained in some plaques on the wall. It also has a nice cool courtyard filled with tropical plants and a wonderful roof terrace overlooking a small square and a church. We have enjoyed spending an evening up there and just soaking in the sound of the city. Our ground floor room was a little humid, but I am sure this is also because the building is historic. They had great breakfast and were very friendly. Wonderful experience!
- Vianka (10/5): - Great boutique and would recommend to anyone visiting.
- CARLOS (10/5): - The staff is awesome, thank you to everyone. Clean, comfortable and well ventilated rooms with a lot of natural light. Delicious 😋 breakfast. Very quiet neighborhood. 5 minutes walk to all the historical places. All the building is extremely beautiful.
- Gaylene (4/5): - Bed was comfortable and bathroom were ok. Floors were old stone but very dirty. Feet were black just from walking around. Did not receive an upgrade, there was nicer newer upgrades rooms across from us that we were never offered. Had to make sure rooms were ready still at 500pm? We were told not to park on the street because of security; so had to park in a public lot 2 blocks away and walk to get car at 400am to get to airport. Had to make special areangements w parking co as they are not normally open by then. Risking whether they would really be there to open and the fact that we might get robbed walking there at those hours. As there were many many ?? people hanging out in park during that hour which was scary. Probably won’t return back to that location. Liked the historical district though. Breakfast was ok nothing over the top! Staff was friendly.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location, cute space, excellent choice - Overall a great stay. The whole building was lovely and the room well-appointed. The stone cut down on noise. The bed was fairly comfortable (two twins pushed together to form a king). The staff members were friendly though I never met the owners or saw consistent staff from day to day. The breakfast was decent though nothing too special—eggs made to order and then a spread with fruit, cereal, one type of cheese, etc. The location was great—easy to get to all the spots in the colonial area quickly and on foot. I would definitely stay again if back in the area.
- Gabriel (10/5): - Good place!
- ADESH (4/5): - Although I showed them my VIP gold status they changed me for a 45 minutes later check out .
- Elena F (10/5): - It was a very pleasant accommodation, I love the historical vibe. Very friendly staff, this place is so my vibe. Returning that’s for sure 🇩🇴♥️
- Milena (10/5): - The hotel is coniently located in walking distance to most sites of attration.
Its clean and the staff was very helpful and friendly.
Breakfast was delicious.
I will recoment this stablishment.
- YLEANA (10/5): - I absolutely loved this hotel
I will definitely go back
- EDNA PAYANO (8/5): Family oriented or and solo travelers - The staff was friendly and knowledgeable.
Breakfast was great!
Overall great!
Amazing view form the top!
Lots of history
Very walkable
- Juan (10/5): - Staff were great and super friendly and helpful
