Guest Reviews
- Alex (2/5): - Cheap, not very clean. Location is good
- BEN (6/5): A cheap hotel, don't expect too much! Slept fine. - Budget hotel, shower head falling apart, bedding very old and split in places.
- Sean (4/5): - When i arrived at the property, the outside was very dirty and looked rundown. The room door looked as if it had been kicked in previously, as i entered there was an empty mcdonalds bag and bottles/cans of stella on the side, clearly from a previous guest.
The bed sheet had a dried contact lens on it, with the duvet cover had several stains on it.
The bathroom smelled of urine and had sticky floors, thankfully there was a bottle of bleech next to the toilet, which i used with soapy water. Drying the floor with the white shower matt, which came up black.......
The entire hotel was in serious need of a refurb, the staff and owner clearly have no pride and no desire to improve.
I most definitely would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
- James (6/5): Comfortable, if a little tired. - I stayed for 1 night on my way to London. The welcome from the member of staff was excellent. He was really friendly and couldn't do enough for me. I'd seen reviews of the hotel so was expecting it to be a bit grotty but, although it is tired, the room was comfortable and clean (the bed was very comfy and I slept really well).
Yes there are bad reviews gir the hotel but my experience was far from it.
- Diana (6/5): - The staff were lovely
- Sue (2/5): Don’t bother .. awful place - Poor check in .. booked en suite and they tried to give me a shared bathroom .. room was filthy .. old sour milk left on the window sill .. rubbish behind bed .. dangerous electric with wires hanging out of the wall .. it wasn’t expensive but some sort of standard is required .. worn carpet and rucked up .. certain it hadn’t been cleaned .. a health hazard
- paul (4/5): - Great place- they charge you three times for the same nights accommodation!
Will definitely go back
- Massimiliano (4/5): - Rude staff.
- GRAHAM (4/5): - Although comfortable, the whole hotel is very very dated. Shower was a dribble and couldn’t use, toilet didn’t flush properly, and a very musty dated smell.
Noisy at the front as not double glazed and main road outside.
- Matt (8/5): - We stayed here as a convenient first stop after a long haul flight. Friendly service and a nice clean hotel. Rooms a re a bit tired, but we loved staying here nonetheless!
- Mark (8/5): - Friendly staff, value for money.
- Mahlon (10/5): - This is a solid tradesmens' hotel, clean basic service and a friendly, personable staff. If you want slick and modern, this is not the place for you; but if you want reliable services and a decent breakfast, this could be your home-from-home.
- Verified traveler (6/5): It is as bad as the say - It is as bad as all the bad reviews say. It is a dirty, smelly, run down hotel. Its cheap (£48) but I still feel I paid too much. Luckily I only had to stay one night. If you are desperate for the cheapest hotel then it is OK for a night. I slept OK and shower was hot but left as early as I could.
- Alasdair (6/5): Very poor quality - Very poor room, dirty andd lots of broken things. Definitely not worth what it cost.
- Maureen (2/5): - The room property was stuffy and dusty. The bathroom and the beddings were dirty.
The staff were very friendly though and tried to make my stay as comfortable.
- Sophie (2/5): Did not feel safe, clean or comfortable - On site parking great.
The building is in disrepair- holes in the walls and doors, graffiti on the doors, very old and unclean. It smelt like cannabis on the top floor. Did not feel safe or comfortable here. I was travelling for business and will not be going back. I ended up sleeping on the towels on the bed and not using a duvet as it didn’t feel clean. I woke up with a cough the next day- haven’t coughed since leaving there or before going. Smelt like urine on the stairs- there was a communal toilet by the stairs. Windows were dirty and old curtains that I didn’t want to touch. Should have read the reviews. It either needs knocking down or a complete renovation. I checked out early and went to work early to not be there. Check in was old fashioned- written invoice and the exact same amount of the room cost was withdrawn from my account from the card I used to book 2 days before arriving. I was then told this was not the hotel and I had to pay again on the day. This resulted in a fraud case being opened by the bank to recall that money and my card being cancelled.
- Tom (8/5): Good little budget stay - The Hotel is nice overall, not 5 star by any means but the romm was spacious the bed was good, could do with extra pillows and a more modern shower system. Air con would be a bonus. But overall was a decent stay if your on a budget
- Patrick (6/5): Brief stay in Reading - Standard hotel in reading that could not meet basic business needs due to poor wifi connection. Room was basic and really having stayed here will sort other hotels in the area if I return to the region in the near future.
- Emma (2/5): Filthy, dirty and run down. Not recommended. - Fithy dirty and very run down. Stank of smoke. Tv didnt work, dirt, hair and dust in every available corner, decoration badly done and in disrepair, graffiti in hallways, curtains not attached to rails so couldnt open them. Shower one solid stream of water. Spiders alive and dead on ceiling and wardrobe. Light fitting smashed. Grubby and horrible. Never stayed anyway like it and definitely wont be returning.
- Laszlo (8/5): - Very basic accommodation. Definitely a good price/value. You get what
- Richard (8/5): - Adequate room. Not very modern. A bit tatty but it was cheap and I was drunk anyway.
- Emma (4/5): Very Basic - Don't have high expectations if you are staying here. It is very basic and needs a good clean and update. Wallpaper was ripped on the walls and paint peeling in the bathroom. In the morning took my partner 10 mins to get hot water of the shower running for us to be able to use.
- ian (2/5): Awful - Awful hotel- dirty and in desperate need of a facelift.
- Christopher (2/5): AVOID AVOID AVOID - The room was terrible, the bed was NOT a double, it was a small single, the shower head was off, the soap holder was hanging off. No heating in the room, only an illegal heater in the bathroom and the size of the room was shocking.
At 4am the builders were banging and shouting and that coupled with the room meant no sleep. AVOID AVOID AVOID
- Richie (6/5): - Was ok, but the place badly needs an update, staff where nice, helpful and friendly, it seemed like place where people stay long term maybe whilst working in the reading area on long contracts
Ok for the money but not a place for me
- Darren (6/5): Good location on a budget - We booked due to location and price for 1 nights sleep so it would be wrong moan about condition of room etc, we knew what we were getting. It defo needs some updating and bathroom should be cleaner but the staff were friendly and the breakfast was good. For the money it was fine
- David (8/5): - Nice and warm cheap and lovely
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Cheap, cheerful and value for money
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It was close to where I needed to be and for 3* price excellent - if you want 5* quality though pay more elsewhere. Breakfast good and staff extra helpful.
- Cameron (4/5): Last resort - There were used toothpicks in the shower. Squashed bugs and stains on the walls. It is outdated and the condition of the room was poor.
But for £40. You get what you pay for I guess.
- Steve (4/5): - Woodchip on the walls show how outdated this property is. Thats probably the last time it was painted as well. In desperate need of revamping........Scutty.
It was cheap.....worth it ?????&
- Esther (6/5): Needs improvements - The Room was far too cold was very uncomfortable
It was an Old building so very noisy could hear toilets flushing floor boards creaking and unfortunately the man above me snored like a bear :-( so not very much sleep and I had work the Next day
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Good
- Verified traveler (8/5): - You always get a good breakfast here.
The hotel needs updating.
The tiles in the bathroom were dirty.
If you are in your room in the afternoon you have no heating I think the hotel is trying to save money.
- Colin (8/5): A hotel for a short one-person stay near the Uni. - The building felt a bit old but the bed was comfortable, the breakfast was very nice and the staff were extremely helpful.
- jamie (4/5): lots of road noise - tatty and tired, lots of road noise
- Stephen (2/5): Avoid at all costs - No hot water despite paying extra for en-suite shower, wardrobe door hanging off hinges, headboard hanging off at an angle, wall mounted TV also hanging at a diagonal angle.
Breakfast was barely edible. Fried egg & toast were OK but bacon & sausage were horrible & beans were cold.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - If you're not big on hygiene, privacy and don't care for good service, then this is the place for you. Breakfast was fine and the waiter was helpful with my intolerance so thumbs up for that.
- Andrew (10/5): Nice people / nice price - This place is cheap and cheerful... very cheerful. The owners are lovley people and very welcoming. Don't expect anything fancy, but if you plan to be out and about and to come back for low price/good food and beer before crashing then you will be happy here. Lots of men away from home - working locally, but unexpectedly the atmosphere is very nice ... I think due to them all knowing how it is to be away from family etc. and all very civil. Stayed here many times while visiting nearby university and always happy to save money! My advice, pay a bit more for your own in-room bathroom.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This hotel was a pleasant surprise and great value for money being the cheapest yet without compromise on standards. 3 course breakfast included in my tariff, free wifi, white linen changed daily and free car parking. Bar and restaurant also available.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great place looking forward to my next visit they have all that you would look for staff are friendly aswell which makes living away from home alot easier
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Was told to move my car on arrival! Room was very dated and bathroom/shower was dusty and dirty. Breakfast was ok. Would not return.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - good for the money
- Lynne (10/5): Would stay again. - Easy to find. Plenty of parking. Quick check in. Did move rooms due to remote control not working. Everything was available that I required. Probably could do with more attention to cleaning, but it was adequate. Walls a bit thin - I heard snoring from next door. Breakfast was good, though would be good to have some fresh fruit.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Not as expected - Room not as booked, broken light fittings, cold, noise from other rooms. Food was quite good and pleasant staff. Stayed a few times in the past but doubt I’ll be going back again.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Not great - It just wasn’t very clean
- Andrew (10/5): Great - Very good value. Nice people
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good value - Its friendly, has a nice bar, food, wifi, and a very good breakfast... and very reasonabley priced.
- TJ (2/5): Very poor accommodation and cleanliness - Not very good staff were all on there mobile phones while at the check in desk and hotel has very poor standards.
Rooms were neglected in the sense that they did not care about the decor and the facilities.
Iam sure at one point in time the owner of this establishment was passionate about his business and providing a good experience for the guests.
However it would seem that they have lost that drive an ambition and over the years the hotel has just been neglected.
Shame really as the place has alot on potential unfortunately i do not think the owner is bothered about standards.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Comfortable with a good breakfast included.Friendly staff.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good position for a hotel - Friendly staff very easy to slip in late thank you
- Tejinder (6/5): i would give 2.5 - It's was nice good size room , liked the mirror effects all around the room ... good clean average cleanness, it's like a home surrounding... not bad ..
- Darren (4/5): In need of TLC.. - This is a great example of a hotel were hardly any money has been spent on it in years. It's in desperate need of renovation , cleaning and new bathrooms. It's not the worse hotel I've stayed in, but I won't be going back.
Positives are, the bed was decent enough, plenty of free parking and a breakfast from 7 am.
- Daniel (10/5): Great food friendly staff - Great place for working people friendly staff great food cold beer although the rooms and bathrooms could do with a freshen up. But slept well
- Beverley (8/5): Successful experiment - Very pleasant surprise. Very good value. Room was clean, comfy and good size. Breakfast was very good. Will definitely stay again.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Average
- Robse (8/5): - Nice room, nice food, but a bit old fashioned, grr secure parking
- Peter (4/5): - Would have been better if the staff could speak or understand English! Very poor condition - won't stay again.
- James (6/5): - Room was in need of repair the shower was not working and tv signal was blocking and freezing
- Peter (4/5): The Elmhurst Doss House - I've been here before and I don't know why I return. I paid £45 per night and that is about £20 more than it should be. The only redeeming feature is that the breakfasts are ok, although they have started hiding the cereals. The cold water tap in my room (2) only ran now and again. This hotel is basically a workman's flop house. I will look elsewhere next time I travel there.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - 1 night overnight stay. Although it did the job and some looks like some recent attempts have been made to improve the place it is in need of serious improvement for what I paid for my stay.
Staff were good and wifi worked well.
- mo (4/5): location for us was good thats about all - room ok had to ask for coffee, milk. no toiletries and only 1 pillow i bath towel per room no heating till 5pm
- Verified traveler (6/5): - very good breakfast but hotel needs updating
- Stephen (8/5): Lovely stay - Very friendly staff. Good value for money.
- MMHVAA (4/5): Will just about do for one night after a festival - Beds were uncomfortable - small for a double bed, very hard mattress and pillows. Taps in the bathroom sink were very loud and don't run water properly. Showers were weak and took AGES to change temperature and they go from freezing cold to burning hot. Only supply tiny bar of soap in the bathroom that barely lasts more than three hand washes. No where to hang towels - they are placed on the beds on arrival. Unable to take keys out of the hotel room. Staff are not rude, but do not seem able to cooperate with requests or issues and are not very friendly. Only positive is that the bar, when open, is cheap! Would definitely not go back there again, as even when exhausted, it was difficult to get a good night's sleep.
- Adz (4/5): Rude staff, uncomfortable bed - The man who checked me in was rude. I had forgotten my bank card at my friends house 10 minutes away but asked if I could check in and leave a bag and come back, as I was rushing to a wedding. He refused, without even giving me eye contact, and told me 'go and get it!' Awful. The rooms were also very VERY basic (but clean, to be fair). The bed wasn't comfortable, I could feel the springs. They also didn't tell me the times for breakfast when I checked in and I missed it by 10 minutes. Shambles.
- Arthur (4/5): no internet - The advertised internet connection was a failure, front desk denied any way of fixing.
- Richard (8/5): Reasonably-priced hotel in Reading - The decor is a bit tatty, but it's warm, friendly, comfortable, does good, efficient breakfasts - and it's the only reasonably-priced hotel in Reading!
- richard (8/5): Convenient location. - Stopped here for a night as had a few things to do nearby. Good location but a bit basic and shower was not very warm.
- Pranom (2/5): Seriously awful Hotel, would never use again. - Terrible, very poor health and safety conditions, broken steps into garden nobody cared.
Needed medical attention for damaged knee from falling.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - If you pay little, you cannot accept a lot. Room was clean. I think that is what matters
- Verified traveler (2/5): Flee from this hotel - They were overbooked and recommended a nasty hotel nearby.
They refuse to refund me. They lied to hotels.com telling that they have paid my staying in another hotel.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Cheap and terrible - Terrible. Worst £50 I've spent. My bathroom floor had brown/black stains. Shower barely worked.
One to avoid!!!
- Jerome (4/5): elmRUST dirty hotel - Room was dirty and clearly not kept dust free, smears and smudges on walls and bedsheets. This is the worst hotel I've stayed in, i felt like everything is sub-par and felt like bacteria-infested, hundreds of people's fluids and mess left over and not even wiped clean ocer the years (drink and food spills dried on the furniture in bedroom, the chilling feeling when you touch anything, sticky tv remote...). 3-course breakfast is just ONE plate of scrambled eggs (I was refused the bowl of cereal proposed on the menu on my table). Overall it's worse than a youth hostel with three times the price. I cancelled my next booking with them.
- Ian (6/5): Convenient hotel to visit Reading - Well placed for work in East Reading or at University. Some restaurants about 10 mins walk away. Pleasant enough area of Reading and reasonably close to access roads from motorway.
- Rami (6/5): Not a good value for the money - The location is good, the place from the outside looks very cute, very English.
But...
1. the maintenance is lousy
2. the window can't be closed, and that is a bit annoying when it is cold.
and on top of that:
3. when asked to call a cab, I had to wait about 20 minutes because the taxi was not really a taxi but a private car. There was no meter and when the driver asked for 20 GBP he told me that with a meter it should be much more, but on the way back, with a taxi, I paid 15 GBP...
- MR ROBERTA (8/5): - GOOD FRIENDLY OWNERS
- Tim (6/5): Affordable basic accommodation - Nothing to add
- Ian (4/5): A tip - The place stinks.. the food is terrible. The bedding cover looked stained. Hygiene rating is 3/5. The whole place is shappy
- Michael (8/5): Resonable ? - All good, there are some odd damp smells around but really not enough to be concerned with.
- YIU CHO (4/5): Not good choice - Hotel environment was not good especially the toilet
- rigs (6/5): Weekend away - Paid for room we had a ground floor room very shabby, with no natural day light for whole of our stay a very nice man choose to park a large white van across window so view was side of a van .....Lovely... No...
would not recommend ..
- brian (6/5): Not bad - Good
- Christopher (4/5): Not recommended - Very disappointing stay. The accommodation was very dated and the bathroom dirty, particularly the shower. We didn't use it and decided not to have the included breakfast as did not feel confident enough with the dated dining room. The bedlinen however was clean. The price we paid was cheaper than other other hotels by £10, but would not stay here again.
