- Martha (8/5): - Staff is very friendly and helpful. Rooms are a bit on the smaller side but still very nice and comfortable. 100% recommend it is located very close to the subway stations!
- Lindafitz2605 (8/5): Ideal location for eating and travel - Hotel has a nice entrance and reception is reached via a lift to the 2nd floor. Check in staff are friendly and helpful. We booked a triple room, grandma, mother and teenager. Unfortunately triple rooms are small end/corner rooms with very little space. Nowhere to put cases which need to be locked in a metal crate outside the room which is not ideal. On the plus side the beds are comfortable, towels are changed daily and bins emptied. As a family of three we found the space in the room a little tight but couples or single travelers would be ok. The convenience of this hotel and the general comfort out way the space issue if you can cope with it. The little coffee shop across the road is a great place for breakfast and the Irish pub good for a night cap.

We had a corner room with three twin beds so there was no room for our suitcases. We had to move a chair out o the room to put a suitcase under the desk. Quiet area with a restaurants and convenience stores around. It’s a few blocks away from subway and bus lines but also somewhat walkable 20 mins to heart of Kyoto. But after being tired from walking all day, it was tiring walking back from bus stop.

- Stuart (10/5): Great Kyoto Experience - The folks at Kyoto Itoya did a great job of making me feel welcome. They explained everything I needed to know about my room. The loaner umbrellas they provide are great for walking around the city. The small cafe on the second floor is really nice. Very central location, easy to walk from there to public transport. And they support luggage delivery, and helped me get my luggage sent on to my next hotel, which was a tremendous boon.
- PlanetToGo (8/5): Very good starting point to explore the city - Hotel is well located in terms of metro station and more important bus station in front of door, as we did a lot by bus in Kyoto. We booked excluding breakfast and organized breakfast via supermarkets around the corner. Bed was very comfortable. Bathroom small but all what you need. The room itself was relatively big with even a desk and 2 chairs. Staff was super friendly and they offered us a free welcome drink. The police station is around d the corner, so if you have a very very light sleep, maybe not ideal. Value for money was very good.

- Kanghoe (10/5): Good hotel - I made the decision because of the price, but when I arrived at the accommodation, I was happy to receive a welcome coupon. And the height was the old key, so it represented the atmosphere of Kyoto well. And I liked the size of the market because I was staying alone.
- Hsin-Ya (10/5): - The breakfast was of great quality. I like that the location is relatively walkable/just a short cab ride away to different sites. The surrounding area is quiet and makes you feel like you are a part of the everyday scenery. It would be better if the hotel can provide lotion in addition to the shampoo/conditioner/body wash. The hotel doesn’t provide daily cleaning (only towel change and taking out trash) unless you stay for more than four nights. Slightly more frequent cleaning would be a huge plus. We stayed for three nights and as much we tried to keep the room clean, the floor still gets a bit messy. Overall a very pleasant stay and the staff is friendly and helpful.

The amenities indicate laundry facilities, but it is more a laundry service that the front desk will receive and do it for you, it's not a self-service laundry room. Aside from this, it was a nice stay, staff is very nice.
- W3547UOcherylb (10/5): Great location, comfortable room and awesome staff - Being in Kyoto for a long stay, it was important to find a hotel close to transportation at a reasonable price. Kyoto Itoya Hotel exceeded our expectations! During our stay our room was clean with towels replaced daily. We appreciated the bathroom space with separate shower area (Japan style) and bath for relaxing after a long day of walking. The room is small but there was plenty of space. The bed was comfortable and the amenities as well as refrigerator were nice. There is no view which didnʻt matter to us. We also very much liked that the room was warm as Kyoto was chilly. To this review, weʻd like to add that the main desk staff was always helpful and ready to our questions. As we were there on the day of the recent earthquake in Ishikawa area, it was good that they could help our understanding of the news. We would also like to say that the folks who clean the rooms do an excellent job and in our interactions completely courteous and helpful. There is a breakfast and "lounge" area but we did not use it. If you are looking for a well-located, clean hotel central to transport with a positive staff, this might be the place for you.

- Horace_Puffer (10/5): Everything Great, but Location Not Optimal - If I could give this hotel 4.5 stars, I would - as it is, since that option isn't available, I do believe that it deserves five stars. The hotel room is very spacious, especially by Japanese standards. It's also very clean and tidy, as per Japanese standards. The front desk staff are very friendly, and speak enough English to help you in case you don't speak Japanese. The location isn't perfect - but it's made up for by the fact that the hotel charges less than many other hotels in Kyoto. The location might be a 4/5, but the value certainly is a 5/5. They do bike rentals as well, which easily mitigate the suboptimal location of this hotel. All in all, I do recommend that travelers come and stay here, and I'd likely return here on my next trip to Kyoto.
- mazzaf023 (10/5): Lovely hotel with excellent staff & great location - We really enjoyed our stay here. The room was smartly decorated and a really good size. Staff were friendly, efficient and very helpful. We didn’t have breakfast so I can’t comment other than to say it was quite expensive and there are plenty of cheaper options away from the hotel. We did day trips to Hiroshima and Nara from Kyoto which I recommend. The train station has a lot of food options if you want to get breakfast there.

Very conveniently located next to a central metro station and bus stops and 10mins walk to a main street with lots of shops and restaurants. The staff went above and beyond to help us and recommend best ways around Kyoto, which contributed greatly to our lovely stay there.
- llsee (8/5): A Relative Bargain in Kyoto - We spent 2 nights here in early November 2019 during our Japan trip. This is a very nice, quiet, well located hotel in Kyoto. The rooms were larger than I expected, although the bathrooms were standard Japanese size (i.e. small). The hotel is quietly elegant, with a well appointed lobby and breakfast room. The breakfast room also doubles as an afternoon break room, where you can enjoy a complimentary soft drink, or discounted beer. Public transit is easily available, with a subway stop just a 5 minute walk, and a bus stop almost at the front door. As with most of Japan, there are innumerable restaurants within walking distance from this hotel. Considering that the Kyoto hotel scene is usually overpriced for what you get, this hotel is a good cost friendly option.

We enjoyed the many small but detailed Japanese hotel amenities such as an air freshener spray and a full set of toiletries. The staff were incredibly friendly and courteous as well.
- Plinius76 (4/5): Stay for visiting kyoto - For the first time in Japan I feel cheated. The rooms are clean and spacious, the place looks good overall, nice music and furniture. Where does my feeling come for? Mainly two things: 1- Poor breakfast, they make this optional and if you buy it before 10 pm it’s cheaper. Don’t do that, you get better quality and portion in the majority of the places on the street. 2- At the check-in they offer you a voucher for drinks, only when you use it you realize that it’s only for a tea or something similar or can be used for a discount on a beer which is of course overpriced to 600 yen I am picky since I travel a lot and I like clear and direct communication. It would take little effort to be rated good from me but I cannot at this stage. I hope they will get this message as a suggestion for improvement.

- stevejnb (10/5): A gem of a hotel in a jewel of a city - We’re leaving Kyoto today after 5 nights at this gem of a hotel. A 700Y cab ride from Kyoto station and a 10 min walk from the market and shopping area, this is brilliantly placed. At under 100€ a night for a modern, clean and well presented property it’s also excellent value for money. The staff are lovely and accommodated all our requests with efficiency and precision. There are a number of coffee shops inside a 3 min walk to take a cheap breakfast - we especially liked Caffe Veloce. The room is small but big enough for our stay. The bed is a 1.6m and very comfortable. The air con has multiple settings - we preferred the dry setting to keep the moisture from the air but not dry us out as much as aircon. At night the unit was near silent. The bathroom is a modern typical Japanese style. The shower had great water pressure. All in all if you want a great experience for a very reasonable price take a cab ride or 20 min walk from Kyoto station to this place. You’ll not be disappointed.

- 158JohnW158 (8/5): Excellent hotel - I really liked this hotel for a number of reasons. It is fairly new so everything is clean and in good order. The rooms are surprisingly large for Japan. One downside was there was no in-room safe but things could be left at the front desk. I’d have preferred to have had an electronic key rather than have to go to the second floor reception each time. The location is great. Gojo subway station is one stop from Kyoto station then a 7 minute walk. Better to take the bus. Number 5 and others stop right outside. From the same stop you can go right to the bamboo forest area too.
- Giambattista-Carlo (10/5): Confortable and excellent position - Extreme courtesy of people at reception and at breakfast (speaking english). The room was not very big but comfortable enough for two, with modern forniture, with a nice bathroom. Breakfast is very good although with no sweet items: the choice is between four different menu based on eggs or cheese, ham etc, coffe and orange juice. Excellent quality. The hotel is just in front of the bus stop (a few stops from Kyoto Station with bus 22 or 5) and close to metro stations, which is very useful because Kyoto is a town where buses go everywhere are frequent and easy to use thanks to the map that is given when you buy the 24 or 48h pass for bus or bus+metro at the bus information on the right when you exit the station from the central exit). Close to the hotel are several (economical) restaurants and a few supermarkets. Absolutely recommended for visiting Kyoto
- johngY2843XJ (8/5): Boutique hotel with good location but larger rooms are expensive - Itoya Hotel Kyoto is excellently located on a main street (busy but never noisy) in central Kyoto. The hotel has a lovely, small breakfast room/cafe that overlooks the main street and has a nice balcony. Reception is on the second floor (1st floor for Aussies) and is staffed by very friendly personnel who speak good English. We were pleased to get an upgrade to a larger room with windows on two sides and good natural light. The only downside is that this was expensive. We thought it worth the cost given that we had 4 nights in Kyoto and did not want to be in a small, dark room. The hotel is within walking distance of a number of shrines, temples and castles and most importantly it is surrounded by good Japanese and other restaurants. We enjoyed our stay at the Itoya Hotel Kyoto.

- Molly (8/5): - Nice hotel in Kyoto. The facilities were all updated and the room was nice. The room was comfortable but a tiny bit crowded with 2 suitcases (typical of cities in Japan, though). One minor thing was the elevator - there is only 1 and no good access to stairs, so we had to wait a while a few times to be able to get up to the top floor. We did the breakfast a few days and there are limited options but the food was good and reasonably priced. Friendly staff with English skills. Hotel is in a good area, within a 30 minute walk to the heart of Gion and Nishiki market. Close to a few subway stops that will get you around the rest of the city.
- cottonseeds (8/5): Calm oasis in the city - We spent a few days at the Itoya at the end of March, just as the cherry blossom was emerging. The hotel is situated conveniently between two subway stations on the Karasuma subway line, Gojo and Shijo. Each is an easy walk away but Shijo is probably the most convenient and, as a bonus, there is a branch of Starbucks almost next door to Shijo; convenient for breakfast. The reception staff were charming and most helpful. We were able to leave our luggage there before check in time and it was taken to our room whilst we went into town. Alongside reception is a lounge area where drinks are available (a discount applies for one day of your stay) and there are books, boardgames and travel information; breakfast is also served here. Our room, which looked out at the front of the hotel, had a comfortable double bed and was quite spacious enough to accommodate our rather bulky luggage. There was an effective air conditioner and the bathroom was the wet room style with shower, deep bath and lavatory as commonly found in Japan. Some other reviewers have complained about the requirement to leave ones hotel key at reception whilst going out but we did not find this a hindrance and were actually quite glad not to have to carry the key. We would cheerfully stay at this hotel again. NB, on the ground floor next to the hotel entrance there is a restaurant which is not associated with the hotel. We had one meal here but were disappointed with the quality and quantity of the food. I would suggest that other travellers consider this.
- jamestW4435CE (10/5): Max value in this "budget" hotel - We stayed at the hotel on our own for 2 days just prior to our Intrepid Tours Japan trip. Overall, the property was rated as budget but we felt it performed far above that standard. The front desk, located on the second level, was accessible by elevator, and the staff was congenial and helpful and most spoke enough English for us to get by. Breakfasts were not buffet style but ordered from 4 choices and were excellent. The bathroom facilities were western standard and quite sufficient. Although the room was on the small side (admittedly by USA standards) it was efficient and comfortable. I would highly recommend this hotel for its amenities and also its location near several of the iconic sites but also near both bus and subway transportation. If we return to Kyoto we would definitely put this property at the top of our list.
- biztravel2003 (8/5): Hidden Fees - Very nice hotel, great location, comfortable. Only issue was check in surprise. 3 days room reservation was prepaid online. Online receipt stated room rate included taxes and fees. It did not. Additional fees were charged upon check in. This increased daily room rate. Felt like bait and switch. No other hotel in same country did this. Showed reception staff receipt, amount paid and disclosure the payment included taxes, surcharges, etc. Hotel reception is located on second floor. The entrance is on first floor set back from a main street. A single elevator takes you to second floor for check in.
- JanChia (10/5): - The toilet and the shower rooms are separated. Large bathroom for a cheap price. Worth every penny. They give you a free drink voucher and they have a selection of coffee and teas. Excellent hotel. Will stay here again.
- 557helenb (10/5): Great hotel in great location - The hotel is a relatively easy walk up the main street from Kyoto railway station. The building in nondescript on the outside with modern decor inside including the rooms. We were very pleased with the room and ensuite and even the tea making facilities which we used morning and night. The staff in the hotel were from the room cleaners to the front desk. All were ready to help make our stay easier and more enjoyable. We were able to purchase food from Diamaru and bring it back to the hotel and eat in the dining area - something you would not usually be able to do in a hotel. The dining area has a balcony over looking the street which was a popular place for guests to eat and drink. Our group of four were good walkers by the time we reached Kyoto and found walking to Gion was no great hardship. I would definitely stay in this hotel again for the comfort and convenience, and friendly and accommodating staff.
- evertonmi (6/5): Good place, but for convenience I would stay somewhere near Kyoto station next time - Pros: - the hotel decor is really nice - the staff is very helpful and friendly - the shower was good, nice bath and comfortable bed and pillows - location is close to the subway, with some good restaurant options around and many convenient stores. Even though the location was good, if I ever stay in Kyoto again I would probably choose to stay near Kyoto station. Kyoto is a large city and the tourist sights are really far apart, so you have to use public transport a lot, usually the best way to get to places is by bus or train/subway, and most of the time you end up having to change at Kyoto station anyway, so I learned it's the best place to stay if you're there to explore the main sights. It's easy to take the bus or subway from the hotel, they even have a map with the bus options, but when returning to the hotel, I never knew which bus to take and always ended up taking a train and changing at Kyoto station. There is no tourist attraction really close to the hotel, maybe only Gion, but it's still a 20-25min walk. There are some great restaurants around though, Donguri has amazing okonomiyaki and there is a great cafe just across the road, Komeda's coffee I think. Cons: - there is no natural light, the only window in the room faces directly to the building's wall next door - on check-in I found out I had to pay an extra fee. I checked later my booking confirmation, and even though it's not clear enough, it does say that it might include an extra fee, it doesn't say how much though, booking.com should be more careful about that. But anyway, every hotel I stayed in Japan didn't have any extra fee, I only had to pay what was on my booking confirmation, so I think it's quite annoying that the hotel didn't include these fees in their final price. - there is only one lift, so sometimes we had to wait a long time until the lift came - No self serve laundry. I like the option of doing my own laundry when travelling, most hotels I stayed in Japan had coin laundry which was very handy after travelling for many days.

- mimi (4/5): Room and hotel felt dark and stuff - Is it just me? The hotel felt dark and stuffy. I was getting clarastrophic. I felt dizzy and couldnt breathe in the hotel. We were planning to stay for 6 nights but asked for a refund so we could move to a more open space. The best part was they were very nice and accommodating. They asked if we wanted a bigger room and ended up letting us cancel 4 nights.

Rooftop restaurant and also has an outdoor patio seating in main floor outside of cafe. Double twin room is quite small not much space for luggage but comfortable with basic necessities provided. Rooms have a safe and nice view of city. Too bad the cafe isn't open until 10am.

- Karrin (8/5): Great location and very helpful staff - I was unsure of where to stay in Kyoto as there are a lot of different pieces of advice out there, however am really glad we chose to stay here. Easy walk to the main station and a lot of other areas like nishiki market and gion, great shopping and restaurants everywhere. I unknowingly booked a "smoking" room and whilst the room itself was impreccable, as I am not a smoker I found the residual smell difficult to sleep with. This is not the fault of the hotel however and am only saying it to make other travelers aware :) overall would definitely reccomend to anyone traveling to kyoto!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice Modern Hotel - Nice modern hotel in Kyoto. Rooms are on the smaller side but comfortable enough. The bathroom was very nice and included a new-looking tub! The staff is nice and if you ask them for directions or any help they'll do their best to help you out. I requested a bag transfer to my next hotel and they took care of it. Also, even though we opted not to get our rooms cleaned every day, we would always get a nice little bag of clean towels and other stuff by our hotel door when we got back that day. The location is also very close to a metro and bus station, so getting around the city is pretty simple. Also, is very close to the train station so that's always a plus if you plan on doing day trips out of Kyoto like we did. Overall we were very happy with our stay there!

- Marvin (6/5): Small room with awkward bathroom - The room was small and had a musty smell. Western travelers will find the bathroom to be awkward and uncomfortable. It is not a western style shower, rather you must sit in a tub and use a hand held shower to rinse off. The beds were firm. The hotels location is fair. There are a couple of sites that are close by and walkable. You must use public transportation to reach the majority of the other sites.
- Dusty (10/5): Great Kyoto Hotel, Great Location - My wife and I visited this hotel in October 2016 and it was the best out three hotels we stayed in while visiting Japan. The staff is very friendly and they gave us two free drinks during our stay. It's about a 15 minute walk directly north of Kyoto station and you can walk to a significant number of sites from the hotel... as long as you're okay with walking. You can rent bikes from the hotel which is pretty convenient. The only two negatives would be: 1) you have to turn your key every time you leave 2) the beds are pretty firm, boarding on hard. Just note that every bed we tried in Japan is very firm compared to western beds. So you can't really complain about that. Two recommendations: Craftman is about a block to the north. Great place to get craft brews and meet other tourists. The second is Giochi's pizza which is about two blocks to the east. The wood fired pizza is the best we had in Japan and the owner is super friendly.
