Guilherme (10/5): Good option! Great for kids - The backyard is really amazing, with a nice pool and wonderful view to the beach. Unfortunately they can’t offer breakfast. It isn’t a modern house but it’s in good conditions.
Julie (2/5): - DO NOT STAY IN ROOM 205!!! THE HOTEL IS LOCATED ON THE HWY AND ROOM 205 IS THE NOISE BUFFER FOR THE ENTIRE PROPERTY. TRUCKS WERE ENGINE BRAKING ALL NIGHT LONG. MOTORCYCLES SCREAMING BY ALL NIGHT LONG. IT WAS NOT A VACATION. IF YOU ARE MAKING A RESERVATION, CONFIRM WITH THE HOTEL YOU ARE NOT STAYING IN ROOM 205. I CONTACTED THE MANAGER AND THEY DID NOT REPLY. THEY DO NOT CARE. Otherwise as long as you’re ok with hanging out with large iguanas and python snakes, you should be fine.

I would think for that price they would give us a better room.

Elisa (10/5): - This hotel has only 8 rooms, immaculate grounds (gates and shrubbery separate the bordering properties so it’s very secluded), a stones throw from the ocean, a staff that goes over and beyond to make sure you enjoy your stay. They arranged our massages, horseback ride on the beach and gave great advice on the best places to eat. We stayed in the upstairs oceanfront 2 bedroom suite. It had a wide “L” shaped balcony 25’ facing the ocean and about 20’ facing the pool with table, chairs and sofa. This is definitely our “GO TO” resort every year!

Just a few steps down and you were on the beach.It was peaceful and quiet and away from all the noise and crowds. The staff were always very helpful.

Right off the beach enjoyed watching the surfers. Walk done the beach to several nice restaurants. Pleasant view from balcony with comfortable chairs.

The front desk employees were fantastic and went above and beyond to provide any assistance needed. They offered up dining recommendations and helped book tours. The location is walking distance to multiple good restaurants and you can walk the beach to get to some of them. The beach was a short distance from the rooms. The town of Jaco and supermarkets to buy groceries were a short drive. Two things we would have appreciated; less ants outside and inside and a microwave. Aside from that we had a wonderful stay!!!

Some decent restaurants nearby and Jaco is a short taxi ride away for more shopping stores. The best is staff. They are a very dedicated staff. Shout out to Chelsea for handling some changes to my reservation by phone. She made it easy. Oh, lastly, the view is amazing and if you surf you are going to be very happy.

The waves were sometimes 12 foot. It is not good for swimming due to riptides. However the water is warm and I would wade up to my thighs. The hotel is about 5-6 miles from Jaco. I chose this hotel because I wanted someplace quiet. Now that being said, there is noise from highway 34 competing with the sound of crashing waves. It didn’t bother us. There are three restaurants about 30 yards away with good food. The hotel owner told me about a small rainforest park named “The Rainmaker “. It was about an hour away and featured hanging brides and pools at the bottom of waterfalls. Self guided it took us about an hour and a half to complete. Pura Vida!

Catherine (10/5): - Our room had absolutely amazing views and was very clean and comfortable with good air conditioning. We were in one of the beach view rooms with a large patio and extra bedroom. The property was very quiet. I couldn't hear the noise from the road behind, only the ocean waves. The pool was clean and surrounded by lovely landscaping. The nearby restaurants and bars had a relaxed vibe and plenty of food options. We enjoyed walking down the beach for breakfast and other meals. The scenery was stunning. I highly recommend it, especially if you want a quieter beach than you'll find in Jaco.

Joe (6/5): - We came here because of the advertising for surfing beach. However when we arrived there was a permanent sign on the gate going to the beach with no swimming. Turns out this is for expert surfers. Not for family's. Morning staff not friendly. Had to bring a broken coffee maker to front desk because my machine was broke and she gave me another broken one. Then blamed it on me and walked me back to room to only discover it was broken. No apology. This place would be excellent for professional surfers.

William (6/5): - First we are in mid to late 60’s age range. No breakfast was advertised and there was a great place for eating within walking distance(short). But it is very hot at Beaches now, so even for us a short walk and we were covered in sweat. Also they do have some snacks in refrigerator in room, but charge a little high for chips and candy bars.Our superior room was great with sounds and views of ocean. TV’s only with about 2 English Channels..odd in tourist location. Had Britt Keurig cup type machine in room which was great except we were told that each room got 3 kcups daily.. then you had to pay for more. Dorm sized refrigerator in room.. no microwave. When asked front desk for a washcloth were given like an American hand towel.We would stay there again only for views and it was pet friendly. Nothing else
EVA (10/5): - We felt like we were in our own mini resort. The hotel only has 8 rooms (2 suites and 6 jr suites), and all with balconies & ocean views. The pool was relaxing and the ocean just steps away. Away from the chaos of Jaco. We absolutely loved our stay here.

Verified traveler (10/5): Great location on the beach, Security monitored - The Backyard Hotel was a great stay — very safe (security monitored 24x7 with gates operated by security), on the beach (we slept to the sound of the waves!), and all activities picked us up from the hotel (we had multiple choices of activities and time options). Apart from the location, right on Hermosa Beach and multiple restaurants less than 5 mins walk away + Jaco downtown 10 mins drive away, Chelsea at the front desk and the rest of the hotel staff made our stay truly memorable!! We gave Chelsea the list of activities that we wanted to do (texted on WhatsApp) and Chelsea took care of everything, incl some additional activities that we decided on once we got there! Chelsea was extremely efficient in taking care of everything and had the various providers come to the hotel for pickup and drop-off. We didn’t need a rental car at all, and we made the most of every minute of our vacation! Overall I can’t say enough about the team and location of Backyard Hotel! If you’re looking for an easy, laid-back vacation by the beach where everything is taken care of by an efficient team, then this is the place! Highlight recommend!!
Katrin (10/5): - The hotel was clean and secure. The staff was super helpful navigating the language barrier and country. Chelsea and the other staff at the front desk made you feel welcome. The black sand beach is just a few steps from the hotel. The pool and grounds are clean and personal. I think all the rooms have an ocean view and balcony. The only thing I would say could help perfect the stay is a coffee maker( there is an expresso machine). The hotel is also close to major road. Our personal experience was amazing and we will be back.
Barbara (8/5): - The staff at this hotel were very professional and friendly. The hotel.is very secure. There are cameras and someone on duty at night time while you come in and out. This hotel is located right in front of beach. The grounds are very well taken care of. The room is basic but you have such a good view from the balcony and even laying in the bed. The only thing negative i would say is the water pressure in bathroom sink is low. And the air-condition return blew hot air towards the sitting area. Which made it uncomfortable to sit on.

Brian (6/5): - This place has so much potential! The bathroom was terrible! Really need to update and sort it out! A little bug problem but - carpenter ants - not good with all the wood! Furniture is old and beat up. Not enough closet space at all! And no English speaking tv channels when all the guest were English speaking lol we checked out early to stay in a more expensive hotel- jaco beach bars and restaurants are extremely over priced compared to the restaurant stripe just minutes away.
Cecily (10/5): - We stayed at Backyard Hotel for a week. It wasn’t anything fancy, but it was perfect for a beach stay. The room are a little dated. Not all of the lights worked. The hairdryer didn’t work. When staff was notified, it was fixed immediately. Very nice, large balconies, with beach view. Very quiet and remote, away from the hustle and bustle of Jaco. Grounds were well manicured. The pool was clean and refreshing. Back gate opens right up to the beach. There are 8 rooms and 8 parking spots. We rented a car from Alamo and always had a spot. They arranged hotel shuttle to and from airport for us, at $130 each way. Fridge was stocked with snacks and drinks and cleaning service did a great job daily. We would certainly stay here again.
Kate (8/5): - The location of this hotel was incredible. We had a large room for our family of 6 with balconies and beautiful views of the black sand beach. We loved being steps away from the ocean! The pool was very nice as well. The room itself was functional, but pretty worn down. Many of the light fixtures were missing bulbs and some of the switches didn't work at all. Everything felt a little tired and old. But again, the views were totally worth it!

JEREMY (10/5): Location Location - The hotel itself and staff are fantastic. Every time I saw the staff they asked if everything was OK and ensured everything was perfect at all times. You cannot beat the location we could hear the ocean and away from the city noise of Jaco. Yet the location was close enough to Jaco and all of the attractions which made it perfect.
Shana (6/5): - Security guard is a creeper snd you need to watch out for him, late at night I was outside not feeling well and he tried to get me to go down to the beach with him. Besides him I liked the place a lot
Norma (8/5): - The only thing I didn’t like about this hotel is that is very near the Main Street and it’s very noisy, you can hear the 18 wheeler go. by. Also it goes not have a restaurant.
HELDA (8/5): - Beautiful hotel right on the beach. Room was spacious. Would have liked to have a microwave as the hotel did not have a restaurant. Rooms facing the street hear lots of road noise. Staff was attentive and eager to please.

Luis (8/5): - Playa Hermosa is a great place to start the trip as it is close to San Jose. It less crowded than Jaco and the beach it’s pretty nice. The hotel is right in front of the beach, overas pretty good.
Travis (10/5): - Great little property right in the beach just a few minutes from Jaco. Several restaurants within walking distance and beautiful sunsets. If you can deal with a little road traffic (semi’s engine braking) this place was perfect.

Malin (10/5): - Clean, spacious room with AC and fan. Beautiful balcony overlooking the property and the surf.
susan (8/5): - Lovely view of the beach and breakers. Ocean waves beautiful and can be heard all day and night. Friendly and accommodating staff. Unfortunately traffic noise can also be heard .

Verified traveler (10/5): Excellent stay - The beds were very comfortable, the room and property were very clean. The pool was warm but not too much. The walk to the beach was easy, just out our lanai and down a path. Would stay there again.
