Guest Reviews
- Andrea (8/5): - Perfect location for those who are interested in visiting Calakmul. The room was big, comfortable and clean. Small issues can occur, such as water or electricity shortages, but the staff was always kind and ready to help. Recommended!
- Zoe (8/5): - Hotel ia beautiful, the only thing I didn't like was the restaurant, food was cold and service was slow,
- Jorge (10/5): - Excelente servicio. Super atentos
- John (8/5): - Good for the price. Clean sheets and towels, recommended for a budget-conscious traveler.
- Greg (10/5): - It’s an isolated area near some amazing places, but I’m afraid that the train Maya is going to bring a lot of tourism and change the entire nature of the place, and that the local people will be the last to benefit from this. I think we got there just as the wave was starting to break.
- Julian (2/5): The Rooster Motel from hell - I wanted to like this hotel however, it lacks any creature comforts and is very poorly managed. The WiFi doesn't work, the restaurant food is inedible and the shower is best described as a dribble! If that wasn't bad enough, a neighbouring rooster routinely wakes everyone at 3.30am. If you value your sanity I strongly recommend booking alternative accommodation.
- Maria (10/5): A pleasant stay - A clean, quiet room for a very fair price. Helpful staff provided us with an excellent guide to the Calakmul ruins and the bat cave.
- Laura (10/5): - Nice hotel for the star level and price.
Incredibly clean (immaculate) in rooms and around hotel, fluffy towels and great sheets. Bed a little hard but that’s Mexico. Great wifi. Hot water.
Staff friendly. Neighborhood is a block back from Main Street so no street noise but some roosters and dogs (again normal for Mexico).
Restaurant in hotel had lots of options and was good.
We liked it and would stay again. Very safe area.
A great base for Calakmul trip.
- Patrick (10/5): - It was nice.
- John (10/5): - Nice, clean, and big rooms.
- Paul (8/5): - This basic hotel was very clean. The staff was friendly and helpful with some local things, though they didn't know much about visiting Calakmul. I suggest hiring a professional guide for that. Beds were clean and comfortable. There was actually real cable TV (via satellite) which was nice to entertain the kids after hours of walking through ruins in 100 degree weather. Also, the AC was adjustable and worked well. There is a restaurant that is very convenient and looked pretty clean. It was outdoors yet covered and quite nice. Food quality was passable in a pinch, but meat and chicken were tough. Breakfast eggs and fruit were okay. Overall, the hotel was a good value and one of the best hotels in Xjumpil.
- steven (8/5): Good value - Bed was a hard, safe place, good value
- Daniel (4/5): - No water in the morning. Mattress was uncomfortable. Holes in towels. Very basic set up.
- Robert (8/5): 8 is the score. Everything was fine. - It was fine, blasted hot, pool was nice.
- Denise (4/5): Okay place to stay in the area. - It was a good enough place to stay two nigts for the activities we did around the area.
- Normand (6/5): - The lady at front desk told me kitchen open at 5:30 am. But did not open til 7:00am.
We had a tour book at 7:00am for Calacmul.
No breakfest.....
- Thomas (8/5): - This hotel is in a good location for visiting Bacalar and it's easy to walk to the center of town. The rooms and facilities are clean, the breakfast is okay and the view from the pool on the roof is beautiful.
- Dave (8/5): - As always a great place to stay for the area. Just wish they'd update/improve the wifi, it's pretty much useless.
- Jorge (6/5): - We arrived at our room, the beds were not made, we didn't have towels, the staff was notified and they were quick to fix this.
In one of the rooms, the TV didn't work. The location is ok to some archeological sites, it is an average stay.
We had breakfast the next morning and the options were nice.
- James (8/5): - Hotel was adequate. Rooster next door was anoying at 3:00 AM but thats what roosters do. Service was friendly. Cosidering location, probably as good as it gets.
- Dave (8/5): - The location was good from a archeological sites location. The wifi was horrendous. If you didn't have cell coverage you'd be hooped. Overall the place was OK, staff was great, just cruddy wifi.
- Jesse (8/5): - There was a great deal of wood in the rooms. Adjacent to the hotel was a nice restaurant. The room was well refreshed and included AC. The office was great to help with taxis. On site laundry service. The secluded area was pleasant and pretty. There is a serene ruin in walking distance. Caring staff at hotel and restaurant.
- Daniel (8/5): Nevermind the wifi (keeps shutting off) - Nice calm area, far from the stores and restaurants. There's a restaurant on site. I ordered 2 hamburgers and two cokes and they said they didn't have change for a 500 so I ordered two bacon hot dogs as well. I asked them if it'll be ready in about 15-20 minutes, the time it usually takes me to shower. They said 30, no problem. I come out of my room 30 minutes later and they haven't even started cooking my order. 45 minutes pass an no food, it wasn't til the hour or so that my food came out. And the burgers were cold. Long story short avoid the hotel restaurant 1 out of 5 star
- Daniel (6/5): - The hotel is okay. There are better options but they were all booked. It was still good. Parking is limited, about 6-7 cars fit, unless they have a bigger parking I didn’t see. Breakfast is okay.
It is close to the main road, which leads to Xpujil centro, and also close to Becan, Xpuhil and Chicanna sites, and about 1-2 hour drive from Calakmul site main entrance. We had a nice stay here except for one thing: there was no hot water. Hot water only lasted about 1 minute and then there was nothing, no water at all, unless you use freezing water. I contacted the staff and they say to give it some time and it will come out. It never came out and we had to take showers with cold water! They need to fix this. Other than that, it is a good stay if you want to see the ruins nearby.
- Mark (8/5): - nice staff and good room, but breakfast you have to paid and it is very slow to be served.
- Scott (8/5): - Cute hotel with some nice touches. The room design was a little awkward with a wardrobe in a blind corner that was hard to access. Bathroom doorway lacked clearance for anyone over 6'1''. Neighbourhood roosters crowed most of the night and sheep added their music in the late afternoon. Being a farmboy, I enjoyed the sounds but others may not. Secure parking onsite. Good value for money. I would like to return.
- Diana (8/5): Comfortable little hotel - This is a modest little hotel with all amenities needed for a comfortable short stay.
The AC is COLD (yay!) and the rooms are clean. There is also a palapa in the property that serves breakfast starting at 7am if I remember correctly.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We stayed in this hotel so that we could visit Calakmul. The hotel has A/C which is really needed. The staff is friendly and helpful. This is a fairly basic hotel. Good for the night.
- Claudia (10/5): - Very comfortable, super clean, good place for rest and go to Calakmul next day.
- Fred (10/5): - Really nice room with good air conditioning. Near center of Xpujil. The highlight for us was the excellent kitchen and tasty local cuisine. Delicious and clearly made fresh. All prices were very economical both for hotel and restaurant.
- michael (10/5): Great place in town - We enjoyed our 3 night stay at the hotel, the restaurant was great, the front desk was helpful, good security guard.
Close to the town and other attractions. Wifi was not great, but it may not be heir fault entirely.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Room was updated w improvements. It was quiet & away from the busy street. Nice flat screen TV. Only there was a smell of sewer, not always hot water, no free coffee & no one spoke English. Therefore it was difficult to decider breakfast time, area sightseeing or restaurant recommendations.
- Timothy (6/5): Roosters all night - Awakened by roosters most of the night and then greeted by a flock of chickens outside our door the next morning. Shower was just a tad above cool. It appeared that they were remodeling their on-site restaurant. (Jan 2020)
- Alexander (8/5): nice hotel - nice hotel
- Verified traveler (8/5): Stayed 2 nights - Fine spot - food service is slow but very good
It’s almost the only place in town with western standards
WiFi is not so good
- Daniel (4/5): - Overall was Ok. The restaurant though empty, the food was prepared at the moment you asked for it and of very good quality. What annoyed me very much was the air conditioning. It was off in the wee hours of the morning and the heat woke me up! They have a system to shut them down after a few hours.
- Timothy (8/5): - The staff were super friendly. Although free parking is not listed, there was an outdoor spot to park. On the negative side the wifi cut out a lot and when it was working it was super slow.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice older unique hotel with its own restaurant. The staff that we talked to were nice and friendly.
- Keith (6/5): Maya Balam - Maya Balam was clean and comfortable so I had no issues with that. The hotel is a couple blocks off the main strip so it's a little quieter that other hotels in the area, The bed was comfortable (I had a king size), room was air conditioned, TV, clean bathroom etc. The food was pretty good. One problem is that the internet was very hit or miss. If you were lucky enough to get access, don't get too comfortable because the connection would end. Sometimes, there are no English-speaking staff around. While I think the Hotel was a good value for the price I paid, the biggest problem I had was when I discovered that someone on staff had been in my luggage and stole some money I had there. It really bothered me because I liked the hotel, but when staff don't respect the guests, that creates a serious problem.
- Ruth V (8/5): Value for money. - A better than average Mexican hotel in a scruffy little town. Everything worked, so no complaints.
- Pradeep (8/5): - Ok for short stsy
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Clean, reasonably quiet, nice staff. The person at the front desk apologized for the slow internet, even though that’s an issue in all of the region
- Mark (10/5): - All the amenities that make for a nice little hotel.
- Barb (8/5): - This basic hotel is clean and well kept. Hot shower, plenty of towels - including the elusive facecloth - satellite TV and convenient parking, made this hotel the perfect stop over to visit Calakamul and other nearby sites.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - This hotel has three stars only in a very dark night and if you believe motel 6 has five.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We were met by a very nice lady at reception who gave us great advice regarding visiting the local ruins. The rooms were very affordable for what we got and the onsite restaurant was excellent too. Be aware that there is a 1 hour time difference from Quintana Roo to Campeche state (Xpujil).
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great little hotel. Clean, comfortable rooms with comfortable beds. Good AC and glorious hot water. Attached restaurant is open 6am-10pm and will make a packed lunch for you. They made empanadas for us to take on a day trip to the ruins and it was perfect (cooler recommended). This hotel absolutely can’t be beat for the price! We were very happy here.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Away from the main highway so it's quiet. The restaurant has an interesting menu. Room is spacious and clean
- Verified traveler (10/5): - the staff was very helpful. The rooms were pleasant and clean. There were not enough towels.
- Ronald (8/5): Great choice for Calakmul day trip - The accomodation was clean, close and quite allowing conveniant access to the local sites. The beds were past there best before date and a/c stopped workin on the last night. No problem for us. If you expect 5 star accomodation there is none in this town and I would suggest visiting other ruins beside Calakmul that may meet your needs. The food in the attached restaurant was good and others are a close walk away. We used our Telcel data as the wifi was very slow. We noted that Telcel only worked near the townsite. We only found one person in the town who could speak English who operated the La Tbjita restaurant. None at the hotel spoke English so the Google translation app will be important.
- vivian a (10/5): - We were there for birding and the birds in the trees at the hotel were great.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Would definitely recommend - Great service & price - Not only is price great for what you get, but service is outstanding. Gustavo, who what our server during meals every day, was amazing, as were the two ladies who helped us at the front desk with our different questions.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely large room, nice place for breakfast. Good restaurants around.
- Sara (10/5): - Nice family-run hotel close to the Ruta Puuc ruins and Calakmul. Staff were very helpful and accommodating-we lost power in our room during a storm and were quickly moved to another. Basic, economic rooms, but beds were comfortable and AC was cold. Restaurant on premises makes good, affordable food.
- Carlos (10/5): - Very decent hotel, breakfast was delicious. And friendly staff. Good price
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I think this hotel is among the best ones in Xpujil.
There are not that many of this service.
Highly recommendable clean and safe place.
Awesome temperature at night.
No need for ac or anything.
23 degrees :)
10 minutes walk from the ado bus station at the center.
- Leonardo (8/5): Great value for money - Nothing fancy, and doesn't pretend to be. Great value, all the essentials, good service, good food. Not a hotel to spend the day in, just to spend the night and visit the surrounding attractions. And it works great for that.
- Tammy (10/5): - The air was great it was even a little cold which I like
- Verified traveler (8/5): Affordable and convenient to Calakmul - I was a single male traveler, and I wanted cleanliness, simplicity, a touch of individuality, air conditioning, and a bath room with hot water. This hotel supplied all those features. In addition, it was quiet although less than a block off main street. I left before breakfast began, toured Calakmul and arrived back after breakfast service had ended. 24 hour bus station a block away with strong coffee and sweet breads had to suffice. a block. Very affordable.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very nice place, good food and clean rooms. Helpful staff to help us and a german couple to rent a car to reach calakmul.
- Nicholas (10/5): - The room was very nice and the location was perfect for visiting great archaeological sites
- JoAnne (10/5): About the best in town - Very dusty Mexican town. We were there to see Calakmul ruins. English not fluent but Spanglish works. Little confusion the following morning about getting to the ruins, which are quite remote but turned out our seeking out a taxi worked to our favor because of our time constraints in moving on. Hotel stored our bags while we were gone. Hotel itself very nice. Little restaurant that we did use for breakfast but found supper elsewhere. Not that there was a problem with it we just prefer to wander and find other places.
Beds great, pillows great...shower hot water had issues but I'm sure that was an exception. Fixable just not in time for me..lol
- Harriet (10/5): Great option for visiting archaeological sites - Really great and affordable. Spacious room with good wifi, air conditioning, comfy bed and hot water (normally a rarity in the local area!)
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great hotel in Xpuhil - Icpuhil is the centre to get to all places in calackmul area. This hotel was superb and very reasonably priced. The rooms are big with a lovely restaurant in the open air. The staff were amazing. They helped us find fun things to do, helped us with wet clothes an d after we checked out they even let us use their showers after a muddy adventure to some caves. Highly recommend
- Verified traveler (8/5): excellent hotel for the price - confortable beds
- Jo (8/5): - It was average. The room was clean though the bathroom was dated and had low water pressure.
- joshua l ford (10/5): good vibes - this place was very nice for the location. the guy at the front desk helped me change my room when i messed up the booking and hooked it up with 2 beds at no extra charge. the lil restaurant down stairs was perfect when i woke up looking for coffee. just a really peaceful environment!!!
- Lauren (8/5): Clean hotel, helpful front desk - We stayed here on our way to visiting Calakmul, and it was perfect. We were able to check in late, and the front desk staff was really helpful in giving us directions and info about visiting the ruins. They have a restaurant attached, but we were also able to walk into town, which was nice. There was air conditioning in the rooms, always a plus! Would stay there again if we were in the area.
- nicole (8/5): Nice room for the price! - We stayed in the superior room, the room was very pleasing, the large bed was nice, the room was very open and spacious, the front desk was very helpful. Was surprised how pleasing the room was since the hotel was in such a small town basic out in the middle of no where. We stayed there over night and then visited CaLakmul ruins. Great town had good authentic tacos at LA Pizzeta. Would stay there again.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Recommend but .... - We stayed two days in February 2017.The hotel itself is good value for money and nicely decorated and comfortable. The only problem is the NOISE around it. Roosters were going all two nights long as they do not put them in a pan and a house in the vicinity had a music blasting on the weekend. Other then that good value for money. So recommend it.
- Gollis (10/5): Perfect place to visit many Mayan ruins. - It was confortable and convenient. All the staff was friendly and very helpful. I will go back.
- Lindy (10/5): Small, comfortable hotel. - Maya Balam is a nice little hotel with a good restaurant. The restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner, and has a limited but decent Mexican menu.
The general attitude was very laid back and the staff is helpful. It was one of my favourite hotels on our Yucatan trip. Having a room safe available would be helpful.
- kris (10/5): Nice hotel - Convenient location, clean rooms and friendly local people
- Courtney (10/5): Convenient and clean hotel - Friendly staff, close to ADO station and small restaurants, clean room, spacious room.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good option if you're staying in Xpujil - This is a decent hotel, specially considering the price. The rooms are clean and have what you need for an overnight stay. The staff is very nice. The only issue was the food... Not that great and very slow (we also missed our tour).
- William (10/5): Great base camp for Calakmul - Not rating against every hotel in the world, but based on my expectations for a small, rural Mexican town. It exceeded them in every way, the room was nice, clean, reasonably priced, food was great, and service was excellent.
- neviana (4/5): Clean family hotel - If you need a clean not expensive place to stay in Xpujil, this one is for you. From here you can visit the ruins of Calacmul, Becan, Xpujil - all are worth it.
The hotel has all you need for 1-2 nights. AC, good internet, quiet clean rooms - nothing fancy but enough.
I do recommend it.
- Stephan (10/5): Clean and very well kept hotel. - Clean well kept hotel. This is our second visit in 2 years. Great staff.
- MP (6/5): Small issues with hotel. - Rooms are clean and it hasn't been that long since they last remodeled. However, stayed here for 3 nights and experienced the following issues with room: bathroom light in our particular room was very dim (staff did offer to give us a table lamp for the bathroom since they are aware of this issue) and TV sound worked, but no image. Also, service at the hotel restaurant was so slow that I didn't go back a second time. There are a couple of good restaurants within walking distance so this is not an issue, recommend restaurant Verzacruzana, large portions for all their dishes and good.
Overall, it's a good hotel and service by front desk is very good.
- ning (10/5): very nice hotel - Very good hotel, room comfort, service very good, very good restaurant.
- Kim (8/5): Great hotel for visiting the Calakmul biosphere - This hotel is very affordable and convenient for visiting the Calakmul ruins. We had everything we needed and the staff were very helpful. The restaurant was excellent and very happy to accommodate when I asked to make something vegetarian and dairy free. Great value and location.
- J (8/5): They do a great job - We made Maya Balam our base for 2 days visiting Calakmul, Balamku, Chicanna, and Xpujil. Did not make it to Horniguero. What a great time. The hotel is simple but very well maintained and the staff is enthusiastic and very helpful. Hired a great guide to Calakmul through the front desk. Food in the restaurant was good. A/c was primary feature that brought us here. And quiet - it is away from the highway - which was pretty noisy when we ate at a restaurant there. Pics on this site are accurate. Simple rooms at a great price.
- Brett (10/5): - Nice, spacious room that looks to have been recently remodeled. About half a mile into town which has plenty of places to eat and grocery stores and shops. Manager was very helpful with our trip for the next day with maps and driving times and even gave us some local advice of things to do.
- Carla (6/5): Good option for an overnight stay - The hotel is good for an overnight stay, especially if you want to visit Calakmul. The restaurant is OK and the staff is nice. The room is big, but not particularly pretty.
- Rivka (8/5): Great for price - Friendly staff
- Verified traveler (6/5): nice hotel - was impressed with hotel room. friendly staff, was only there one night. safe area but not close to much. set in a back area next to fire department and police station. didnt checkout pool or other amneties. place was quiet
- aurore (10/5): nice hotel near Calakmul - Good hotel, clean, welcoming staff.
Good to visit Calakmul.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good location for Rio Bec Mayan sites - Everything was fine. We used this hotel after going down to Calakmul so we could visit Xpujil, Chicanna and Becan Mayan sites. The breakfast food was good in range and quality, but it took a long time to be served.
- Ginevra (8/5): Good hotel - The hotel is comfy and beautiful, we had a pleasant stay.
Not giving 5/5 because WiFi was terrible (common trend in Mexico unfortunately), there were only 2 wall outlets, and the hotel is next to a place with chickens that started singing super loud at 6am, and several stray dogs roam around.
- Taylor (10/5): - We stayed for one night on our way to Calakmul ruins. The hotel is located in a nice quiet part of the town, close to the better restaurants. Very nice and helpful staff with a good breakfast option for the morning.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Best base for Rio Bec archaeological area - Very nice and clean hotel to base your tour of the Rio Bec archaeological area. Be sure to visit Zotz cave to see 3 million+ bats leave at dusk.
- miriam (8/5): Nice hotel - Nice hotel close to center, very clean only wifi in our room was bad. In restaurant the wifi was very good.Nobody speaks english but we communicated some way except in restaurant...
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I spent two days and visited some nearby ruins
- Avner (10/5): Very good hotel - A very good service and the team is very efficient and welcome
- robert (10/5): Good place to stay to visit Calakmur and Becan - Hotel rooms very clean. Nice restaurant, service a little slow but when we asked for beer they sent someone to the store to buy some. We stayed an extra night
- Verified traveler (8/5): Very well kept - Very well kept place that made the stay seem safe. Clean rooms, clean grounds, clean front entry. The only complaint is the beds were more firm than I am accustomed to and the entry to the bathroom had a low doorway that caught the top of my scalp more than once.
- Hugh (6/5): Good clean hotel - Nice clean little hotel. Friendly helpful staff (no English) comfy bed & aircon. Separate canteen across the courtyard does good breakfasts and evening meals. Good base for exploring Rio Bec area. Guide organised For Calakmul visit.
- Ross (10/5): Clean, ideal for what we needed - We were merely stopping one night in Xpujil and on that basis the hotel was ideal. Clean and convenient, the staff were friendly and even helped us in English when our Spanish wasn't up to scratch!
Had dinner and breakfast in the small home-cooking resturant and both were fantastic at a reasonable price.
Directions to find the hotel: from main crossroads head west a few blocks until you reach a huge conch statue (new this year according to our tour guide). Turn left/south and the hotel is 100m up the hill.
Overall I can't see why people would be in Xpujil for more than a couple nights and on that basis the hotel is perfect!
- Rafa (8/5): Nice stay - Nice place for a night, you would never believe there is a good place in the town but this is a great option.
It has a small restaurant with tasty/economic Mexican food
I stayed there to visit Calakmul, it's a 2hrs road trip but it's the closest town
- Rodrigo (10/5): Very nice small hotel - The place is perfect if you are not expecting luxury. It is well located and the staff is very friendly. I highly recommend.
