Guest Reviews
- Verified traveler (2/5): - This is a tourist trap. Pictures do not represent the conditions of the proprty. I was received by a staff member that had no problem yelling at me. Beds were not made, blankets were filthy so was the bathroom. During the check-in we were told silverware and diningware was no available, despite it is announced as an ammenity. We booked a triple room and were received with an 8 bunk bed dormitory. We did not stay, and had to book a last-minute expensive room somewhere else.
- Breukelen2013 (4/5): Rude staff. Avoid. - Rude and abusive staff. Used Bounce luggage storage service. Staff ignored repeated calls and door buzzes and then yelled at us and demanded we leave. Not a friendly or welcoming place, there are much better options in the neighborhood. Avoid.
10 puntos
- Erwin (4/5): - Ruido constante
- Jean (2/5): - Shower head in middle of bathroom. You have to squeege the water yourself to the drain. Bathroom is shared, not private as advertised. Bed bugs, and mosquitoes in bedrooms. Horrible experience.
- Silvia (10/5): MUY BUENO TODO - LA ATENCION EN EL HOTEL FUE MUY BUENA, NOS SENTIMOS CÓMODOS.
- BENDT LASSE (8/5): Good hostel, charming, but with a few problems - The hostel is good for the money. It is not clean, especially the kitchen is not, and could do with some knifes, spoons and forks, as well as plates. Also the sevage has a rather big problem, as the toilet makes the room stink.
That being said, the hostel is charming, well positioned, close to city center. In a stylish old building, but quite well kept.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - O ar condicionado não estav funcionando , e Buenos Aires é extremamente quente no verão
- Verified traveler (4/5): MALISIMO!!!!
- michty6 (6/5): Not great, not terrible... - Not good but not terrible.
Rooms are ok but have giant windows with no curtains so are very bright.
The air con points right in your face.
Wifi doesnt work in the upstairs rooms, you have to go downstairs and connect to the 'downstairs'wifi.
Breakfast is ok - coffee, bread and a piece of cake. They make you eat it in the kitchen though, rather than their lovely outdoor square.
Also they let people smoke on the kitchen balcony, which blows into the kitchen in your face, which isnt great if you hate smoke.
Bathrooms are just about passable - a bit dirty.
Price is about in line with BA prices but probably too expensive for what you get...
- carolynH746 (6/5): Good location - Stayed here for a few nights in January and again in March. It's good value for money. Breakfast is ok, fresh pastry every morning, cereal, coffee and juice. Wifi connection not very strong and the shared bathroom not very clean. However, the showers are powerful and always have hot water.
Tv in the lounge area and a quaint little courtyard with tables and chairs is a nice area to chill. Staff are friendly. Good locations, near to all attractions. Felt quite safe, reception had to buzz you in to gain access.
- paulmT2399DN (8/5): Basic and friendly! - This hostel is a little dated but very functional and quiet enough and clean. Very friendly and accommodating staff who are happy for you to use the facilities after checkout. Good value and the great staff are the reason for four stars but will need a facelift soon to get 5. Definitely would stay again!
- lozsleisure (6/5): Good price - We paid the same here per night for the two of us in a private room as we did in our previous hostel in BA for a dorm room. Breakfast was basic and lacking really - the best thing about it was the little pot of dulce de leche! Otherwise a piece of cake and two small stale(ish) bread things. I just cooked eggs for myself every morning.
The air con only came on at night in the room so in the day it was too hot and then halfway through the night we'd be shivering!
Most of the staff at this hostel are really friendly though. We liked it enough to stay there for about a week with the good price we found. We did notice we got quite a few bites there though.
A few recommendations for BA: get ice cream from Freddo (personal favourite was the vauquita sundae, mmm) and visit the Japanese gardens for a couple of hours.
- CarlyB871 (8/5): Nice hostel - The staff was friendly and super helpful, and our private room was average. The kitchen wasn't the cleanest I have seen, but you can't expect much for the price in such a fancy neighborhood. The location was excellent. Good vibe at the hostel.
- 534isabelcristinam (10/5): Friendly environment - Well located, in a historical building in Recoleta, one of Buenos Aires most beautiful neighborhoods. Staff is very friendly, facilities are comfortable, wifi is free and they have very good prices. Brazilians feel specially at home. Portuguese is easily spoken in the facilities.
- Lyselia (10/5): Great stay at Recoleta Hostel - i stayed 10 days in february 2015 and it was a great stay !!
the staff was very kind and the dormitory was very spacious
the hostel is in the center of Recoleta so you can go easily in the center!!
thank for everything !!
- DanCuenca (10/5): Best hostel in Buenos Aires - I absolutely LOVE this hostel/hotel. I spend my summers in Buenos Aires and have stayed here for the last two: you will not find a homier, warmer, friendlier hostel in all of Buenos Aires. Among the many wonderful things about this beloved place, I will highlight just a few:
- Unbeatable location: the hostel is located in the heart of one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Buenos Aires: Recoleta. It is surrounded by countless cultural, entertainment, dining and shopping options and, being located two blocks from the intersection of Santa Fe and 9 de Julio Avenues, you are within easy walking distance to the downtown / historic area, the parks and museum in Recoleta, the theaters on Corrientes Ave, renowned libraries such as El Ateneo, the Santa Fe shopping district, the national library, Vicente Lopez street nightlife, etc., etc., etc. The D line subway station is a few blocks away, and literally dozens of buses stop within two blocks of the hostel. The neighborhood is safe and lively day and night, with many restaurants and shops open 24 hours.
- Warm people that will make you feel at home: the first thing you will notice about the hostel is the warmth, friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. The front desk staff will go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. I would like to especially mention Juanito, a super nice young man with a strong international life experience, multi-lingual and personable with a clear talent for multi-cultural work. He organizes several nightlife events, such as bar outings, reviews and keeps up-to-date museum and cultural event listings, and organizes in-hostel socials and holiday parties. Always ready to help, Juanito will be your guide and reference while in Buenos Aires. Lucas, the morning-receptionist, is a polite and educated man with vast knowledge of traditional Argentine culture, and excellent command of English, and an contagious good humor and cheerful disposition. Jorge is also extremely nice and helpful and Eduardo, the hotel manager, is onsite everyday overseeing operations and making himself available to guests for whatever they need. Even the maids are super nice!!!
- Excellent facilities: the hostel is in a large two-storey house and all rooms have either front windows looking on a beautiful French-architecture-style Recoleta street or are located on the large central Spanish-style patio. The patio has a water fountain and is a great place to relax, socialize, skype or eat. The kitchen has all utensils and a large eat-in area, and there are living areas with couches and TVs on both floors. The upper floor has all-around balconies onto the first-floor living area and patio.
- The details: you get deals and discounts to pubs and bars through Juanito; the hostel is super gay-friendly and extremely safe for women traveling solo; free breakfast is provided to all private and dorm room guests: you MUST try their HOME-MADE bread (the bread is actually made from scratch onsite every morning); etc., etc., etc.
- 265jonasb (4/5): Everything you dont want. - I have spent 3 nights in that hostel. First of all I booked online to buy the membershipcard but the hostel was ¨out of stock¨ so I paid full price and was told to go to another HI hostel to buy the card. Then the people barely speak english and wont try to slow down so you can understand when they speak spanish. The rooms are messy and noisy, and the bathrooms leaks from almost everywhere so be prepared to spend 10 minutes wiping the floor everytime you take a shower. Last but not least, you cannot walk in socks or barefeet. I have tried it and they would not let me have breakfast until I put some shoes on, unbelievale. Like many HI or YHA places, this hostel only want your cash, and wants it bad. Go somewhere else, it is not well situated and not cheap either.
- Maxence73 (2/5): Good location but... DIRTIEST EVER! - After 8 mounths travelling around all Argentina I went to many hostel and I can give my fair opinion.
Good location and good staff, dormi are big but beds are very old and broken. Good area, Good breakfast. Bad points are :
- Bathrooms, dirty and toilets broken
- the kitchen is the worth that I never seen! So so dirty even if you cook after they "cleaning" after the breakfast. It's just disgusting, and even if you are a good backpacker who clean his own dishes, it's all the kitchen which is really dirty. I put pictures to make you judge by yourself. In the capital, even if its an hostel for 120ars/nights, it's just negligence of their parts.
- NXZ (10/5): I loved everything about this place - 1. The reception staff is amazingly helpful, efficient, and friendly. They really care about the hostel and the visitors. They do not mind getting involved with a million details of running a hostel, or with any travel problem or question any visitor might have . I interacted mostly with very professional Lucas and very cool Juanito (who are both completely fluent in English), and occasionally with also very helpful Jorge and Eduardo - all of them were the best hostel staff one could imagine. In addition to this excellent reception staff, there were a number of housekeepers constantly cleaning and fixing up everything, and there was a lady who prepared the breakfast. Really an uncommonly high level of service for a hostel.
2. Excellent location of the hostel, at the edge of the most upscale area of Buenos Aires. When you are in Buenos Aires, you can either stay at La Mansion with Mick Jagger, or four street blocks away at Recoleta Youth Hostel - the price is very different, but the location is similar. Numerous spectacular buildings and sights are within the easy walking distance of the hostel, including the Recoleta Cemetery.
3. Amazingly inexpensive for such a fantastic location (or for any location).
4. Totally safe. Safe area of a generally safe city, safe building. The front door is locked, and you are buzzed in and out by the reception staff, who keep a close eye on everybody who comes and goes.
5. I stayed in the most economical dorm room (bunk beds, four beds per room, shared bath), so my comments pertain to that type of accommodation. The rooms are large enough, with high ceilings, the beds are comfortable, no insects anywhere in the hostel, everything is clean (old but clean), bathroom plumbing is in good functioning order. It was very hot in Buenos Aires when I was visiting, but the ceiling fan kept a very comfortable temperature in the dorm room.
6. There are large wooden lockers in the rooms (I brought my own lock, but I think you can also borrow one from the hostel). Additionally, there is a safe storage area where the reception staff will keep your luggage locked if you arrive before the check-in time (which is officially at noon, but they will check you in earlier if possible), or if you need to temporarily store your luggage after you check out of the hostel (the check-out is 11 am).
7. There is a pleasant breakfast (orange juice, cereal, rolls/pastries, coffee or mate- you need to try that, the traditional energy drink of Argentina), in a nice old dining room. You can use the common hostel kitchen to prepare your own food if you want (but you should really be eating out in Buenos Aires - Argentinian food is legendary, and sooo tasty, and also relatively inexpensive).
8. There is a nice relaxed common area of the hostel (with computers and TV), also a very pleasant common courtyard in the center of the building, with tables and chairs and plants.
9. The hostel is located in an old building with that pleasant central courtyard - very interesting and architecturally typical of old Buenos Aires. There are some restored historic houses in Buenos Aires that you can tour (eg, the house of their tango legend Carlos Gardel), but I imagine it is harder to find a historic house where you can actually stay for a few days. Recoleta Hostel is one such place.
10. Argentinians are very polite people, and the local attitude of general politeness seems to influence the behavior of hostel visitors too (even though the visitors, of course, are not just Argentinians, but international). All of my dorm roommates were nice, quiet, considerate, and there were no problems sharing the room.
11. Are there any downsides to this wonderful place? I personally did not think there were any. I thought everything was just fabulous, and I felt so good at this old hostel. I thought Buenos Aires was a great city, one of the twenty or so greatest cities on the planet, and an important part of my good feeling about the city came from the wonderful hospitality I experienced at Recoleta Hostel. But are there any possible downsides to this hostel, for certain travelers who are different from me? First, apparently some people complained to the reception staff about the level of noise late at night. While on some of the nights it was very quiet at the hostel, on some other nights the visitors were indeed talking loudly or playing music in the common areas until very late - this did not bother me at all, and I slept very soundly, but some people might have a problem with it. Second, while I personally like a lived-in feel of an old building (so I immediately liked the feel of Recoleta Hostel), there are some people who are uncomfortable in old, lived-in buildings, and who tend to mistakenly confuse old with dirty - that type of traveler would probably not feel right at an old place such as this hostel.
I would definitely want to stay at Recoleta Youth Hostel again. Actually, if I visit Buenos Aires again, I would not want to stay anywhere else but at this hostel!
- MSP_87_SBC (8/5): Great location, staff and C/B! - We had a double room (105 with wifi!) with bathroom on the ground floor, in the open area. This area is quite charming and we didn't have major problems with noise. This room had no windows, but the ceiling was high and it didin't bother us. The hostel itself is far from the street so it is pretty calm and not noisy. The bathroom in the room could have been better cleaned, but it was so good not to share a bathroom that we didn't bother. The wc flush was kind of broken and to lock the room door we had to spend some time trying. It is an ancient place, but I'm sure that if we had complained to the staff, they would have done something, it was just not a problem for us. The kitchen is small but functional. They have two fridges. The staff is the great major of this hostel. Lucas is the guy on the reception desk most days, he is really helpul and kind, he really makes you feel at home! He told us where to go, how and where to be careful as well, he is a lovely guy doing the perfect job! I really recommend this hostel for its location, close to Santa Fe Av, with plenty of banks, stores, buses and restaurants, for being quiet and cozy and for its staff always ready to help you!
- 445esterj (10/5): Very good, nice staff members! - I had a great stay at the Recoleta Youth Hostel. The rooms have enough space, the lockers are big and the beds are comfortable. Good breakfast. Also the staff members at the reception are really nice and very helpfull. I want to thank Juanito, Jorge, Lucas and Martin for making me feel more than welcome. I will definitely return to Recoleta Hostel when I visit Buenos Aires aigain!
- Freddo (2/5): The Nightmare on Recoleta!! - The place was not very clean and while my stay, they never clean the shower rooms. Also, the desk clerk was rude.
- ra0nib (10/5): Nice staff, nice room and location! - Pretty nice and clean hostel, with a really nice staff, aleays willing to help. The hostel is well located, nearby public transportation and several atractions in the Recoleta area. Nice breakfast and confortable guest area!
- wyatta2014 (6/5): Lovely staff and building, timing is key - Hi Recoleta Hostel is in a superb location and offers lovely rooms and very friendly staff. The barrio of Recoleta is well known for shopping and ritzy things of which I found many. Not exactly a bargain neighborhood but well worth a look around. Also there are plenty of bus routes for getting around to the other parts of the city, walking distance to the Obelisco and Recoleta Cemetary. The problem I found with this hostel was with the other guests who were absolutely repulsive. A friend of mine stayed in the girls dorm and had her things messed with and was harassed by another tenant, and the hostel seemed to be full of locals staying long term and being strange and abrasive. Upon entering the 12 bed dorm for the first time I immediately felt as though I was entering a prison camp as everyone appeared to be beleaguered and sick. There were not enough bathrooms for the number of tenants either but this would have been a non-issue had the other tenants not been so complacent. I reccomend this hostel if one is to arrive among other travellers because of the overly lovely staff, building, and great location however many of the other tenants at the time of my visit created an unpleasant and somewhat disturbing atmosphere and I chose to leave. I would like to say that all of the staff who worked reception as well as the cleaning ladies were absolutely wonderful.
- Twelvetoe (10/5): A wonderful stay! - Very nice! -- As long as you are not a pampered princess. Most of the staff are warm and welcoming. Those that weren't, did not speak English but they still would smile and nod. I experienced this when I returned from a wedding celebration at 5am. Probably more related to the time of day than anything else. The cleaning ladies would tidy up the rooms every day, which really is a bonus because we have never experienced that kind of service at any other hostel we have been to. Keep in mind that this is a building that is over 120 years old. A building like this can be clean but still not look polished. The occasional dead cockroach means they are using an insecticide instead of letting them crawl all over your things. Cabs can take you anywhere in the city for US$5 or less. Breakfast was modest by American standards but perfectly suited to an Argentinian lifestyle where dinner is both huge and late in the evening. A private room and private bath for around $35 U.S. per night depending on the exchange rate you get , why wouldn't you stay here?
- MarionnetteBrux (6/5): Good value for money - This hostel is not waou for sure and the hygiene is not perfect but this is a good value for money (235$ per night for private room). And the area is very safe and you are close from the famous recoleta cemetery.
- Researcher_RTW (4/5): Great location but that's about it - On my second trip to Buenos Aires I decided to stay in Recoleta purely because of the area, nothing else.
The hostel was in Feb 2012 quite dirty in the common areas of reception/courtyard had cockroaches lying around/kitchen. Aside the cockroaches, the courtyard area is nice place to chill.
The dorm room was for 14 or 16 from memory and no air con but not even half full during a time when it should have been busy. Dorm also had weird large pipes on the ceiling - no idea what they were for but certainly not air con. Shame as room had a lot of potential, it's a period tenement and had a large balcony but sadly lacked any care - it was dirty and had a lot of old furniture. I met a nice American mum/daughter but the rest of my dorm mates looked to be long term residents who did little more than sleep which made me feel a little uneasy. There are decent 70 litre rucksack lockers in the rooms though. En suite facilites in the room were also not very clean nor modern.
Breakfast is not great but didn't really expect much from the price I was paying. Good for a very budget option in a lovely area of Buenos Aires but think if you did a little more research you would find better for the same or similar price.
- aprueitt (8/5): Seemed fine to me - It costs 70 a night for a dorm bed. The staff were really nice. Breakfast is medialunas so I suppose that could get old after a few mornings. The kitchen and the bathroom in my dorm needed to be cleaned but it wasnt that bad.
I would stay here again because of the great location compared to other hostels! I felt safe as a solo traveller. Free wifi that worked well and 2 computers if you need.
Bring cash.
