- T3819UCamyh (4/5): Mixed review - In late February I stayed at Cliff House with friends. Unfortunately it was in the aftermath of a winter blizzard, when the inn was experiencing power outages. On the plus side, the staff, almost to a person, was friendly, courteous and helpful. The room was clean, as was the rest of the place. The expansive views of the Atlantic are unrivaled anywhere else in Maine. On the minus side, we were told the outdoor pool temp was 86 degrees - no where near that. The hot tub was okay, but certainly not the 106 degrees the staff advised. When we got up the following morning, there was no electricity. I could barely find my way to the lobby due to the poorly lit emergency lighting, where it even existed, and the incredibly confusing and poorly marked maze of corridors from the room. The concierge at the desk said that the power had to be shut down between 6 am and 9 am while electricians worked on restoring the power lost during the blizzard. A fire would have resulted in catastrophe. Stairways were pitch black, and the first stairway door I attemped to open was locked. We were told we could not use the hot tub the following morning as its heater, too, had shut down with the power outage. Not a satisfying experience for a $638 a night room. The $50 room credit we received is small consolation, especially since we will not be returning.

- Alxx911 (2/5): Canceled on us and ghosted us! - Attempted to have an event there. When we asked to move forward to contract phase, they completely canceled on us and ghosted us. No explanation, no reply on email, and no call back. If this is the type of customer service they offer when you’re willing to spend thousands of dollars imagine the way they feel about a patron only spending a couple of hundred. I would advise against this establishment.
- maryelin (6/5): No Hot Water and Zero Resolution: A Major Disappointment - My husband and I recently stayed at The Cliff House in Maine. It is a beautiful hotel, with a beautiful view of the ocean. Unfortunately, we had cold and rainy weather and we were looking forward to getting back to the room and taking a nice hot shower. When we attempted to do so we discovered there was absolutely no hot water! Given the caliber and cost of this hotel, we were very disappointed. We immediately contacted the front desk, but it took a considerable amount of time for a staff person to arrive at our room to investigate. When the technician finally arrived, we were told that the lack of hot water was simply because "everyone was taking showers at the same time" and that there was no way to fix the situation. Well, I understand that high demand can strain systems, however, receiving a lukewarm response and no effort to provide an alternative solution was unacceptable. As a guest, we expect basic amenities like hot water to be available, regardless of how many guests are using the facilities. The delay in response and the dismissive nature of the resolution left us feeling quite frustrated. In addition, when I tried to provide feedback it was impossible to reach anyone directly.

- nicoledW934ON (6/5): Expensive , staff was 5 stars, everything else was just fine. - My review may be bias as I have a background in hotels and the restaurant industry but here it goes: Upon arrival valet was great, helped with the bags. Front desk staff was definitely new but polite and helpful, her manager was clearly up tight and snapped at her for an honest mistake . I genuinely felt bad for her. Main areas of the hotel, seemingly well kept, staff was very friendly , and hospitable . As far as the room goes, some signs of wear and tear, carpeting (not a fan), bathroom is your standard tub and shower in a double king, but only half a shower curtain, left over conditioner from The last guest ? The body wash and shampoo were most certainly the same thing in different bottles ? Water pressure wasn’t great, and the hot water at the sink didn’t get too hot, took a while to get warm. The couches in the common area in front of the tiller and spa are tired, they need to be replaced for sure , not enough seating and lights too bright for cocktail hour into the evening. People letting their kids run a muck long after dinner, just what I want to listen to spending anywhere from $500-$2000 a night . Dining : The tiller restaurant was fine, I would call it upscale casual vs fine dining . Food was good, bar tenders were fabulous. Shout out to Dominique and Lauren ! Nubbs wasn’t bad but for $40 for a lobster roll I want to be wow’d Maine is the lobster capital of the world , basically . One jacuzzi that was loaded with humans gave me the ick. For a resort this size they don’t seem to have enough spa resources to support the demand? You definitely need to be booking your spa services far in advance, do not wait until you arrive you won’t get in. Now to be fair they are winding down from their busy season just before they pause for updates . But for what they charge per night, and for what other ratings have shared, this place didn’t quite meet my expectations . This is a solid spot for a staycation, as I think every couple there this weekend was 9 Mos pregnant and about to go into labor. Definitely family friendly as kids can run wild virtually anywhere on site. I’d consider returning during the on season, because again to be fair, this is their off season.

- Chsmith7 (4/5): Pondering the review - I have been pondering how to share our experience. We came here in the Fall of 2024 and had a great experience. We wanted to go back and bring other people with us and decided to do so during the holidays. I booked a 2 night stay and a couple of rooms for Dec, 2025. While there, we encountered rude staff in the restaurant that really surprised me. And just so you know....I walked into an empty restaurant and they were going to seat us in the middle of the restaurant. I asked if we could be seated by the windows. Again, the restaurant is empty. I was told I had to go back out to the lobby area and WAIT. And then was told that I had to request the seats by the window BEFORE we arrived at the restaurant. It was a strange experience but we waited and ultimately got to sit by the window. But the worst part came when we checked out. After our first night, a snowstorm was coming in during the 2nd night. We didn't want to get "stuck" out of town so we switched our flight and checked out at 11:00 am. No problems at this point except I had been overcharged for something and requested a credit. (We were overcharged in the hotel store as well but they fixed it there). The guy said he was going to have to have his mgr correct it. We were on our way to make a quick stop at the Lighthouse down the street before heading to the airport. The Mgr called on the way and asked me if I knew I had booked a 2 night stay and I told her I did. That was it. No mention of the credit. I hung up and when I got back in the car after seeing the lighthouse, the mgr had called multiple times and blew my phone up with text messages telling me I was going to have to pay for the 2nd night. I told her I did not understand that I checked out this morning without any problems and was not charged for the 2nd room. She said I had booked 2 nights and was going to have to pay for the 2nd night. I didn't understand this but text her that if the hotel needed the money that bad, then take it. (At this point, I feel like they have stolen the money from me.) She would NOT let it go and continued texting me. And it's more of the tone of the texts then anything else. She threatened to pull up the recording of when I called to make reservations. Seriously??? I already told her I knew I had made a 2 night reservation. Then she said someone would call me to discuss further. To this day, no one has but they sure charged me for the 2nd night and I only got a partial credit. So...as much as I loved this hotel, it has left and very bad impression on me and I have no desire to go back. Just be careful!

- Escape482210 (2/5): Do not stay here. There are better alternatives - We planned this trip to Maine for years and booked a Coastal View room at the cliff house for the outlook and position. (At the time of booking, the I am sure the website referenced “cliff”; it now reads “coastal.”) Noting we did not book ocean front and didn’t expect ocean front. We also did not book partial view. The room we were assigned delivered a partial coastal view at best. roof-dominated the view. No lighthouse was visible from this room. At check-in, a team member acknowledged it was “not a good room” and indicated this is a known issue with certain rooms in this category, but we were told there was nothing they could do no room move, waitlist, or gesture. Just sorry and bad luck. Separately, my Dyson Airwrap went missing on departure day. I called immediately, completed the online report link provided, and after a week with no update I called again for the 3rd time and was told it was “not found.” For a high-value item used in the room and then gone, that response and timeline were inadequate. Service overall felt average, with no compensation or proactive problem-solving for either issue. Positives: Justin who I spoke with today at Concierge was excellent, and the valet team were consistently professional and friendly. Cliff House - do better! 1. Reclassify any rooms with roof-dominated outlooks as “Partial Coastal View (obstructed)” and price accordingly. 2. Front desk should offer an alternative, a waitlist, or a goodwill adjustment when a view is known to be subpar. We are not fussy and demanding people. 3. Lost & Found should acknowledge quickly and provide updates within 24–48 hours. It’s missing and is now just bad luck. Bottom line: The setting is beautiful, but the hotel did not match what was expected. Not even close. Given the partial coastal view in a Coastal View category plus the unresolved missing item, we have been left incredibly disappointed. This was a once in a lifetime trip that we came a long way for. This hotel is overrated.
- traceysF8062IG (10/5): Great for an anniversary getaway! - We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary at the resort. It was was relaxing with stunning views. We enjoyed the adult pool and sitting by the fire pit each evening. It was really cool to walk down the stairs of the cliff and walk on the rocks in the ocean. Nubb's Lobster Shack was a delicious option to order from during the day and eating by the pool. The staff was happy and wonderful. There was a night that there was a one man band singer who was excellent. We hope to go back again, however it is very expensive to stay at.

From dining to the Spa, site seeing, dancing to the live music and just relaxing enjoying all the spectacular. We left the doors open to enjoy the views from the balcony of our room. Our rooms were serviced every day we stayed. There was nothing that we did not receive, we will definitely return hopefully with family or friends to share the experience
- marie1000 (10/5): Terrific Experience - My husband and I had wanted to stay here for many years, so we decided to spend the night to celebrate our retirements. It is definitely expensive, even in the off-season, but the views and experience were worth it. We did have an issue at check-in with our room category and had to wait an hour to get it sorted out. But the staff was very kind and apologetic. It would have helped if there had been pictures of the views from the various rooms on the website when booking. Once in our room, all went well. Lovely amenities including robes and slippers and even a shoe polishing kit. There is lovely art hanging in the halls and various activities offered for adults like yoga, seaglass crafts, and live music. The property is very well kept and beautifully landscaped. Our room was spotless including a water bottle and extra glasses, binoculars, and a super comfortable bed. The walls are slightly thin as we could hear folks next door but only occasionally and it did not disturb us. It was too cold to use the pool outside and we didn't realize there was an indoor pool so we didn't bring our bathing suits. There is a gorgeous spa that we will try next time we visit. Make sure you book the "right" room for your preferences and you will have a wonderful time!
- RosemaryD309 (4/5): Not for me - Lovely view, that’s where it stops. There are lovely views in Ongonquit. You are miles from anything, for some that’s great. The 600 plus dollar room looks out on a roof top, with planters on the roof top, admittedly with the ocean beyond the roof top. As noted in prior reviews the food is very expensive, reservations a must or you’re out of luck. This may be a great spot for some, simply beware of what you will get for your money.

We wish we knew before we booked that we wouldn’t be able to use the main pool due to our children’s ages. Unfortunately, we had an issue with one of their new EV chargers and after multiple stops at the front desk and a few phone calls, I never received a response from the manager. I ended up having to pay a ridiculous $100 bill for literally $3 worth of electricity.

Listening to the waves wash up on the cliffs is relaxing all on its own. You can sit in one of the many chairs along the property and watch and listen for hours.

- G8453UTlindab (10/5): An outstanding vacation destination - The Cliff House is a jewel resort in Southern Maine that offers a five star experience in every aspect. Besides an incredible location overlooking an impressive wall of glacier formed rock walls and miles of ocean, this resort offers great restaurants, a well trained staff and extremely comfortable sheets and beds. The expansive view of the horizon and ocean we saw from the comfort of our bed, gave us the feeling of being on an ocean liner without the turbulence, The house keeping was the best we ever experienced. Housekeeper Tracey Anne went above and beyond and created a sculpture out of towels of two love swans to celebrate our wedding anniversary! Now that's exceptional! Not only was our room spotless and organized each day, the entire facility was well maintained and very very clean. There is obviously a lot of staff to keep this place running smoothly and efficiently thereby making sure every guest is happy. The interior design of this resort is well appointed and gives one the feeling of calmness and relaxation. We love the color palette and design elements supporting the nautical theme. The Concierge's were super - Tess and Chloe were a delight and very helpful. Together with several other concierges, all our reservations and daily itineraries were seamlessly arranged. The spa is worth every penny - great ambiance and terrific pros running the place. Zoey was a terrific young therapist. Besides the staff, senior management cares just as much for the guest experience. I met manager Andrew Bartlett who greeted me as I walked by. He offered any assistance I might need - but his staff is so buttoned up - "hello" was all I needed. If you want an unforgettable breakfast or dinner - The Tiller Restaurant offers incredible food and service with some interesting twists on usual favorites. So... can't wait to get back soon. Best vacation ever! Thanks everyone.

Great venue for couple get away or business! - The scenery is breathtaking and the food absolutely amazing but a few key points missing for such a high price. Make sure you upgrade to Ocean Front! We stayed in Room 646 and I recommend this room as has a perfect view of the ocean! The room itself is good but lacks space for your clothes! There is 1 dresser but it literally only has about an 8 inch depth. I was confused was it was a half drawer. Only could fit underwear and socks. The chairs and sitting area aren’t well proportioned either. On the good side the balcony is breathtaking and lovely to sit and watch the ocean! You must book months in advance to get a table at the tiller! We were able to get a spot at the bar that serves full menu. Food is absolutely terrific!! Lobster chowder, bread plate, Caesar salad and Salmon all fantastic!! Not over priced either! I rated a 4 of 5 as they just miss on friendliness all around. The check in area people and valet not friendly. Wait staff-bartender (Jana) and room cleaners all amazing! Overall I highly recommend just wish a few of the details listed above would be better especially at $750 a night.

The staff was exceptionally professional and worked exceedingly well with our family planner. Chef Nathan was professional, accommodating and even provided specially items for the wedding meal and after party. We appreciate the GM, directors and staff for all the special touches.
- Apts42 (2/5): Overrated, overpriced and overwhelmingly disappointing….. - Overrated, overpriced and an overwhelming disappointment. We were shocked when we entered our room and things never improved. The room was massively expensive and did not live up to the price. We had better rooms in Bar Harbor that cost half the price. Our room was very dark, we had to turn the lights on at 10am in the morning even though the weather was beautiful and sunny. The outdoor terraces, were small and filthy. There was bird poop and it remained there throughout our stay. Our room had two safes, which was fortunate since one of them did not work. Our room had two showers one of which did not work with hot water coming erratically. The very noisy air conditioning went off at night and came on every morning at 6am very loudly so we were woken every morning. The pillows were filthy and smelled of body odor - horrible! One positive thing, the valet parking team were excellent as were the servers at breakfast. Never again!

- Lala465 (6/5): Beautiful location but disappointing experience - We recently spent 3 nights at the Cliff House. We booked the vacation months ago and were very much looking forward to a special getaway. We have never been to the property before so did not fully understand the differences in the rooms-- we had relied on the room descriptions. We knew we wanted an ocean view room and liked the idea of being in the main hotel so booked a Terrace King Room. The website states that "Terrace Rooms feature oversized terraces with lounge chairs and umbrella, directly facing the Atlantic Ocean from their perch above our seasonal Terrace Dining area." What we didn't realize is that while the room is ocean facing, it does NOT have an ocean view. The view of the ocean is completely obstructed by the restaurant and this should be more clearly stated in the room description. We were so disappointed by the view and the lack of privacy (imagine restaurant patrons in direct view of our room). We immediately went to the front desk to express our disappointment. They were unapologetic and couldn't make any changes as the hotel was completely sold out. For a hotel of this caliber, where we are spending over $1000 per night, a gesture for our inconvenience would have been nice. Additionally, our stay was a Thurs-Sunday and there was a wedding each day. The pool was packed and we couldn't find any chairs. Luckily, with some patience and perseverance, Adrean went above and beyond and eventually found 2 chairs by the pool for us. If we return, we will be sure to visit in the beginning the week (not a weekend( and reserve a different room type. Overall, we expected more from this property.

- egpress (4/5): 5 star hotel put me in 2 star room - The property is beautiful, but the service and quality fall far short of 5-star standards. Our first room was unacceptable—stained carpet (maybe dried up blood?), mold in the shower, and peeling paint on the ceiling. No attentive staff should have cleared this room for guests, yet we were charged $800/night. Hours later, we were moved to another room down the hall. Unfortunately, it was a connecting room with thin walls and poor soundproofing, so we were woken up every morning at 6:30 a.m. by screaming children in the adjacent room. To be fair, that part wasn’t the hotel’s fault—they don’t control kids—but it was still unfortunate for my wife and me. I raised the issue of the first room with the manager and hotel director, who never proactively reached out. When I requested that one night be removed from our bill, I was told no—because it was supposedly my fault for not switching rooms sooner, even though the new room wasn’t ready before our on-site dinner at Tiller (which was excellent). Instead, I was offered a $150 room service credit. I declined because I found it insulting. The second room was clean and in good condition, which made it clear the first room should never have been assigned. Paint doesn’t peel overnight. Mold doesn’t grow in a day. They knowingly placed us in a substandard room. In the end, we traded mold and filth for 6:30 a.m. wake-ups. A very disappointing stay at a hotel that claims to be luxury. The director eventually offered to comp our meal at Tiller (slightly more than $150), which I found to be unacceptable but accepted under duress because I didn’t want to spend my vacation fighting. Still, the right thing to do would have been to remove a night from our stay, given they tried unsuccessfuly to pass off an inferior product. They should be embarrassed. They claimed room 515 would be improved—so if you get it, inspect it thoroughly… or bring flip-flops for the shower and carpet.

- Catbody (10/5): Amazing family stay - Absolutely a five star experience in our four days here. Every employee we interacted with was gracious and helpful. Stays are full of little touches like local chocolate with the turndown service and amazing blueberry coffee cake accompanying most of the breakfasts. The casual lobster shack restaurant even has locally made desserts and tasty smoked bbq. The landscaping is beautiful and we absolutely enjoyed the pools and lawn games as well as hikes and the complimentary trolley service to the town. Highly recommended.

- meagbmurf (6/5): Cliff House Maine: Views Worthy of a Netflix Drama, Service That Misses the Mark - There’s no denying it—Cliff House is breathtaking. You are quite literally perched on a cliff, with jaw-dropping views of the ocean from nearly every angle. The lobby alone feels like the set of the latest Netflix series about wealthy New Englanders—elevated, elegant, and wildly photogenic. We stayed in a gorgeous room with three bathrooms (yes, three!) and couldn’t get enough of the cozy plaid robes—so much so that we almost bought them for $165 each. The gym is fantastic, with a wide variety of equipment and ocean views, plus group classes. The kiddie pool with its infinity edge is stunning, and the hot tub is enormous. The adult pool (13+) felt a bit stuffy, and it was tough to snag chairs together, which was frustrating. Food-wise, Nubb’s lobster roll was one of the best we had in Maine—and major points for offering a gluten-free bun. A trolley runs into town a few times a day, and there are activities for kids on-site. Now, for the not-so-great: The service left a lot to be desired. We arrived at 1:30 p.m. hoping for early check-in (standard check-in is 4 p.m.) and were met with scoffs from the front desk staff. No warmth, no effort, no accommodations—not even help with bags or suggestions for what to do while we waited. On checkout day, housekeeping knocked at 9 a.m. and we had to ask to extend to 11 a.m.—again, met with resistance. Dining reservations are nearly impossible to get, even for breakfast. When we asked to be seated at 10 a.m. as a party of five, the staff acted like we’d asked to charter a yacht. Bottom line: The scenery is undeniably stunning, but the hospitality doesn’t match the price point. At nearly $2,500 per night, I could think of a dozen other places I’d rather stay—especially with kids in tow.

Not a single thing that could have been improved during our stay. The bar staff was particularly amazing, even sneaking away to stock our mini bar with Diet Coke when we asked for Diet Cokes to go for the room and SO friendly our entire trip. Was a very special stay.

The hotel and its facilities are outstanding and very relaxing-the adult pool and hot tub overlooking the ocean is beautiful with plenty of chairs and staff to assist you-We have been to the Cliff House in all seasons and always have a great time. The staff is very friendly and helpful. It is a great resort!

We went for our baby moon & truly felt pampered, relaxed, and so happy! The views are incredible, the room was immaculate, and the staff was so helpful & kind. We also did a private oil painting class that was such an unforgettable experience!! Our instructor, Ric, taught in a way that anyone - including people with limited artistic ability like me and my husband - could produce a really impressive oil painting! Highly recommend!! We already can’t wait to come back!

- paultN797KM (4/5): Absurdly expensive. - For the price, I would expect it to be all-inclusive, and even then it would still be really expensive. Having to pay $50 for a couple bagels and coffees every morning is absurd. The reason it is not 1-star is because the view is amazing. But unless you literally have millions of dollars to burn and don't care (and even then I can then of a lot of better causes to give to than to blow it on this place) there is no reason to pay $1200 a night for an average room with average hotel amenities.

- Girlonthego10 (4/5): Tired rooms, underwhelming stay - I've come here annually for over 10 years, and we've been back before the property was sold and after, and keep coming back. This year, however, was super disappointing. It felt like we got the most tired room on the property. The carpet buckled in the middle, so we kept tripping on it and fell. The lighting was terrible. The entryway light was dim and flickering, and one of the lights in the bathroom kept going out. The rest of the room only had lighting over the beds, which were pretty dim, and since the weather for most of our trip wasn't very sunny, the room was extremely dark. The bathroom was also disappointing. The dresser needed fixing. we realized the drawer was broken when we tried to open it to put clothes away. While our daily housekeeping was very good, the toilet was stained when we got there. There was also only one hook in the bath, not near the shower, so there was no place to hang your towel, shower cap, etc. The mattress is comfortable; however, the sheets were very pilled and worn down. For almost $700 a night, this was super underwhelming. Despite the weather, we did sit outside. The pool staff was very nice and accommodating. There was a room by the pool with lounge chairs that we wanted to sit in during the periods of rain. Unfortunately, you're only able to sit there if you pay $500 for a daybed... all of which were empty. We had always had a good experience with the Tiller for dinner and were looking forward to a meal there. Sadly, our cocktails on the first night were undrinkable, and our meals were less than impressive. On our last day, we asked them to hold our luggage while we enjoyed the property, which they said was no problem. Upon heading to our car, we realized our bags had been left outside unattended on a luggage cart for hours. Things were spoiled and we had technology and other valuables in there. Overall, the service and accommodations weren't what we had come to expect from the hotel. Yes, you're paying for the views, but for the price, things should feel clean and updated and not dark and dingy. While i've given them business for over 10 years, im doubting i will continue and might find another place for our yearly trip, which is disappointing because we have so many memories there.

The reception desk people were extremely friendly, Valet were very nice, and the Tillers restaurant waitresses very friendly and attentive. The rooms were clean and the view of the ocean was spectacular.

The spa is perfection - from the amenities themselves to the massage. Had the MOST relaxing morning there. Room (deluxe ocean view) was spacious and comfortable for 3 adults. Staff so friendly and accommodating. Only real complaint was our dinner at Tiller. Subpar food for the price. Okay service but after a screw-up in the kitchen, there wasn’t a huge amount of making up to it. I’d not eat there again. The Terrace Bar and the coffee shop were all good. Can’t wait to go back.
- Y6176GUyvonnem (4/5): Very dangerous to walk to your car during the day and at night because of the Limo/Cars speeding. - We had a perfect stay. Our room was clean and beautiful. The staff is extremely attentive, friendly and kind. The food in the hotel was outstanding. That being said, our safety was in danger as we almost got run over 2 times by the limousine minibuses that cut through the parking area at full speed. They have no regard for anyone walking and they should not be cutting through. There is a specific road for all transportation to follow, and the speed limit is 10mph, yet these limo drivers are out of control, and this presents a very dangerous situation for all. We highly recommend anyone with children to not vacation here until management gets rid of this limo company and enforces the right way for everyone driving to follow the road and at 10mph.

- Michelle (8/5): - Lovely property you can't beat the views in the location very surprised of the four valet standing around that not one of them came over to help me with my bag and then when I walked in the lobby there was six people 2 concierge and for front desk people not one of them greeted me it felt very cold and uncomfortable to walk up to the desk to check in the girl checking me in wasn't the least bit welcoming. As I was making my way to my room a very very nice young gentleman stopped me and asked if he could help me he brought my luggage to the room he even went back to my car and got a few small things that was the highlight of my trip somebody just stopping me for no reason to get me to my room and help me made me feel welcome The room I had was oceanfront I woke up early the next morning to the most beautiful sunset it was really peaceful to be able to sit out on the balcony with chairs and a small table none of these things would stop me from going back there but just a little surprised that their lack of customer service and making people feel welcome when you arrive

We were there with a group of the top agents in our state… It was a recognition trip for them (with spouses). The resort is absolutely breathtaking. There are so many touches there that make it unique. I love the (glass) bottled water in the rooms, the turndown service, the binoculars in the rooms, the drink stations on every floor, & the slippers & robes! we ate at both Tillers and Nubbs and both were outstanding. Shout out for all the many gluten-free options ! We also frequented the hot tub and the fire pit areas. The bald head coffee shop was fantastic and had tons of breakfast options. Our room had a fireplace as well. Simply gorgeous!!
