425lesliec (10/5): Historic hotel with nice amenities - The lobby was very inviting from its complimentary lemonade to comfy couches. The front desk was helpful in giving us directions to the different museums we planned to visit. Our room was spacious enough for three adults to share two queen beds. The bathroom was tiny but surprisingly comfortable as there were places to set a brush, makeup, etc. The shower had good water pressure and hot water. The beds were clean and comfortable. They have a noise policy about was easy to get a good nights sleep. I’d recommend this hotel to those visiting Salem.

It’s an old hotel so allowances made for that but bath needs supporting and bathroom door wouldn’t close due to faulty catch.

JackRussellChester (10/5): A historic hotel in a historic city that was PERFECT for touring Boston's North Shore - We booked directly with the hotel and had a room on the second floor, overlooking Essex Street, one of the main streets running the length of the downtown. Even though we were so close to the busy street we did not hear any street noise! We had arrived at 2 AM and were warmly greeted by the female receptionist who made us feel very welcome. Our room was very clean and spacious. The mattress was SUPERB - I wanted to take it home with me! The towels were the SOFTEST and FLUFFIEST of any towel that I have EVER used. I wanted to take THOSE home with me, too! Breakfast is served in their main restaurant and is ordered off a menu for an additional fee. Service was slower one day because one waitress ('Autumn') was covering the entire dining room due to sick calls. She was exceptional in her ability of serving a nearly full room of hungry tourists, and she maintained an upbeat attitude and contagious smile the entire time!! The location of the hotel was excellent as it was bordering the Salem Common as well as the Witch Museum. Parking was on-site, unsecured lot, and was free. Bathroom was small-ish but adequate and the shower was good. We feel that staying at this hotel was one of the highlights of our trip.

The coffee situation: no in room coffee maker, and the foyer pot was empty both times I checked. I did “steal” some coffee from the Tavern room as the staff were busy with a wedding party. Will (9/5): Beautiful historic stay within walking distance to major Salem attractions! - The location, the bed, and the staff were very friendly! Conveniently located within walking distance of the main downtown area as well as the commuter rail station. The windows could open for fresh air. The room was a bit tight, made situating the luggage and shopping items difficult. It is also an older building so the doors rattled at the slightest shift. It also was difficult to balance the room temperature comfortably.

heatherrO7253LM (10/5): Great (but a little creepy) stay! - Great stay at the Hawthorne—had dinner in the tavern, great food and cocktails. Room was clean. They said it might be hot and they could bring a fan up but temperature was fine. Great location—right in the center. Two things of note—we stayed on the 6th floor, room 622. The 6th floor is the pet-friendly floor (we didn’t have any pets), and my husband opened the door to get ice and there was a mini Doberman pinscher (cute!) desperate to get in our room. Then the owner came around the corner and could not figure out why he wanted to get in our room so bad. My husband went in search of the ice and saw the couple with the dog was staying in the room that would be exactly parallel to ours on the other side. I had a great sleep. Husband did as well except around 3 or so he was awoken to a hard poking several times on his shoulder. He said I was dead asleep and facing away so it was not me. We are both FAR from superstitious and don’t believe in ghosts etc, so his mind went to someone broke in—but everything was locked up quite securely. He even checked under the bed! After the fact we found out about its ghost stories with specifically the 6th floor—specifically room 612. Again we were room 622, so does 612 (with the doggie) mirror ours? Other people have also mentioned getting poked as well, which we again didn’t see about the hotel till after. So between the desperate dog and the poke, probably nothing—but most creeped out I’ve been in a while!! (Not so creeped out that we wouldn’t go back!)
Munro-King (10/5): Great location and piece of history - Location, decor and history. Superb place. So atmospheric. Staff really pleasant and the Tavern attached is brillaint for an end of day relax with a local beer. Where the room was perfect for us, some may find it a bit small. Being an historic building, the bathrooms are very old fashioned and tight but ibresllt felt this added to the charm of the place. Would definitely stop again.

851faustf (10/5): Love this hotel - I'd stay again. Staff was excellent. Very laid back vibe. Location couldn't be better. We had a view of a very pretty and snowy Salem Common (park). Short walk to the PEM, which is a must-see. This hotel seemed like a sure bet. If you like a good hotel lobby, stay here. One of the best lobbies I've ever seen and I've seen some very good ones.

Wall paper bubbling, wood work and dressers beaten. The security bar was so worn and loose that it hardly provided any security. The trash had not been emptied and hairs in the shower! As staying only one day- I made the best of it.

X3003ZMrebeccak (6/5): Not the diamond it’s made out to be…anymore. - The Hawthorne is feeling a bit rundown. It seems to be lacking in regular maintenance and updating. We stayed in a king room (room 238) which we thought would be an upgrade from last year’s queen room. The mattress was awful! You could see two depressions with a mound down the center of the mattress even with the duvet on. The bathroom was cold if the door was closed. I don’t believe there was a heat vent in there. There was mold on the ceiling of the shower and a rusty old curtain rod above a large window inside the shower. There was also a large hole and missing tile by the toilet. The counter space is minimal! We attempted to eat breakfast at Nathaniel’s but that was a nightmare. We sat and looked at the menu. A few moments later a waitress came to take our drink order (2 sodas) and we placed our food order at the same time. We sat for more than half an hour and never even received our sodas, never mind food. We told the supervisor we would be leaving and headed to Red’s for an incredible breakfast with even better service. We loved last year’s stay at The Hawthorne and were very much looking forward to our return stay. Unfortunately it didn’t come close to delivering on its “best place to stay in Salem” slogan promise. (I did reach out to management while there and also via email Tyler (manager on-site did what he could with the room which came down to a deep clean. Our billing was wrong as well.)

daman55 (8/5): Family getaway. - Rooms were a bit dated but it is an old a d established hotel. Overall, our stay was excellent. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The food was very good at their dining venues. Highly recommended.
