Guest Reviews
- Lise (4/5): Would not stay here again - Well…. We would not recommend staying here.
1: when you have booked your hotel, the hotel immediately sends out an email heavily encouraging you to booked transport with them (read: kind of makes you feel there is not another option to get there). We luckily didn’t due this as they charge you sobbelt of what you would pay if you buy your transport in La Pavona.
2. Their tours are also overpriced - charge about 10-15 dollars more per person pr tour for a less intimate experience than what you can find in Tortuguero.
3. They don’t make it clear anywhere that if you choose to stay here you will have to take a water taxi whenever you need to leave the hotel meaning you rack up extra expenses. They do offer a free shuttle 3 times a day but only away. Not back again. And only on certain times (11, 15 and 17hr hrs.). We would not have stayed here if we knew that was the case.
4. There was a gap under our door to our room, so each night we had big black bugs coming in under the door. We had to try and block it with towels.
5. facilities was old and worn, so was the pool. Pool was usable but really need a touch up.
- Jun (2/5): - We stayed in the location for two nights, both my son and myself got so many bite by bedbugs in the room!
- Dennis (6/5): Basic rooms. - Fabulous settling, lovely gardens, very basic tired room. Breakfast and dinner was OK. Hated the wooden seats without cushions in the dining area.
- Vanessa (10/5): - The service was incredible and well-suited for our family's needs. The lodges were comfortable and clean, and the staff had great advice for activities and helped us plan out our days to ensure we could enjoy as much of Tortuguero as possible. We appreciate the eco-friendly, family atmosphere and the humble interaction with wildlife. Highly recommend for anyone looking for an adventure in the rainforest!
- Mariah (8/5): - Staff was very friendly & helpful. The property was well kept and clean.
- Carolina (10/5): Waterfront Tropical Cottage - We stayed here with our 1 1/2 year-old and 3 year-old and the staff was very patient and friendly! They were able to make accommodations and provided special assistance with meals, organizing transportation and addressed all our inquiries. We got to see monkeys on the property and many tropical birds. We used the pool and enjoyed the quiet rocking chair dock while waiting for a few passing rain clouds. Excellent-Family Friendly place to say just a quick water taxi away from Tortuguero.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautiful resort. Great food. Thank you Dino for the river and Tortuquero hill tours. Highly recommended.
- Rita (6/5): - Beautiful area, full of plants and animals.
- ilan (10/5): - Most friendly, accommodating staff.
Beautiful nature views with monkeys in the backyard.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It has not ATM
- Cheryl (10/5): - Ronny and his family were very accommodating as we were the only guests at the lodge.
- Kayla (8/5): - Lovely staff, good breakfast. Note that the wifi is almost non existant at the lodge, and zero wifi reaches the rooms. If you are doing a tortuguero tour, may be worthwhile to make sure they pick you up at the hotel- otherwise you need ti taxi into the main town (~4$ us roundtrip, and a bit of a hassel if youre doing an early morning tour). Pool was very nice. Pricey meals onsite for lunch or supper (15$ us) or you can take the free hotel boat into town at 3pm, returning at 5pm. May be nice to stay right into tortuguero, but this hotel is quiet and and good price.
- Kurt (8/5): - The property had very nice gardens full of birds and other wildlife, and went from lagoon to lagoon. Very convenient to get to Tortuguero, but removed enough to be quiet and relaxing.
- atalia (8/5): a wonderful vacation - a wonderful accomodation for a short stay
- Jose V. (10/5): Oasis in Paradise - Beautiful grounds and awesome staff make for a great place to stay while in the area of Tortugero. Separate from the main Tortugero peninsula so you get a break from the busier area but still just a short boat ride away. The lodge is ran by family/friends that are a pleasure to get to know and care about their lodge and the natural beauty of Turtugero.
- Esteban (8/5): - The staff was very nice and friendly. We enjoyed our time spent there
- Jose (8/5): - Property is fine. No Tv. No air condition. Nice staff. Nice pool.
- Maria Amalia (10/5): Hermoso lugar!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - La Baula was quite disappointing for our group. The family room that we booked was really small (although it had 3 beds) and the bugs were insane. We were met at the lodge with a cold drink and that was really nice and there were a couple of staff members that were lovely- however, the front desk staff was overtly rude to us from the moment we checked in. I tried to keep an open mind (cultural differences and all) but after 3 nights I avoided any contact with the desk staff to save myself the humiliation of 'annoying' them any further. The pool is a great amenity and we used it as much as possible because once you have done your tours, there is really nothing to do. The taxi service into the village is expensive (it was 40$ for our group of 7 to go across the river and back). The food is buffet style and was the same every day and lunch and dinner is 15$ pp.- so I would not recommend staying here for more than 2 nights. Also, they allow you to charge meals and drinks to your room, but insisted that you settle up each night. Wanted to like this place more and I think it caters to large tour groups mostly, so probably not ideal for friends traveling together as it felt like expensive summer camp.
- María Dolores (10/5): - Muy bien. Personal profesional y muy amables .
- Arun (8/5): - Stayed for 2 nights and loved the people who worked there. The main manager in the reception was also one of the brother who owned the place. He was great! Very friendly and helpful in organizing tours etc. The bar tender was also the Chef since it was low season. He was great too.
Would recommend this place to my family and friends.
- Sam (8/5): - Very friendly and helpful staff. Limited hot water though
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Common area/dining area was beautiful! Some of the staff was more helpful than others. All were nice but English wasn't strong for all which was a bit challenging for us. Some meals were great and some were okay. Depended on cooking staff that was on duty. Drinks were good. Room was clean but walls were very thin. We could hear the man next to us snoring. Much of Tortuguero is rustic so my guess is that this hotel is similar to others unless you want to spend a lot more.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Quiete, tranquillità e pulizia. Ambiente immerso nella natura
- Daniela (10/5): Idyllic Lodge in Rainforest - We, a family of three, had a fantastic time at La Baula Lodge.
The rooms are in colorful, tasteful casitas (about 6-8 rooms per casita), they are spacious, clean, and have a veranda with chairs.
The Lodge has expansive beautifully landscaped grounds; we loved strolling around and admiring all the gorgeous flora, and look for the local wildlife.
The property is surrounded by primary rainforest, which made for amazing wildlife sightings, such as observing the armadillos foraging at night, toucans flying over early morning, ant eaters in the dense forest along the Lodge's own 200 meter jungle trail, and huge iguanas sitting in the tree branches right at the riverside pavilion.
We loved waking up to the sounds of howler monkeys, taking refreshing dips in the lovely pool, and taking in the magnificent views from the expansive dock, boardwalk and pavilion overlooking the river.
La Baula Lodge is wonderfully secluded, yet just a very quick water taxi ride down the river to the village of Tortuguero.
We also enjoyed the attentive service and very yummy breakfast, which is included, and usually consisted of eggs made to order, pinto gallo, fried plantains, pancakes, homemade jam, toast, fresh fruits, fruit juice, coffee/tea.
We cannot praise the management and staff enough, everyone is very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. We especially want to thank Luis, Fressie, and Charlie!
La Baula is absolutely great value for money.
We were sad to leave.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Caribbean side of Costa Rica is less touristy (no big hotels, etc). The property is very simple - no air conditioning or much space for clothes but it was fine. Staff at La Baula were very happy to help with tours. We took a two hour early morning guided canoe tour, hiked up Tortuguero Hill and the National Park and watched a turtle lay her eggs on the beach at night. We didn’t book anything ahead of time and it was no problem. The town is very small and you have to take a water taxi wherever you go (super cheap and you can pay in US dollars or Colonas). No ATM in town so bring cash for the taxis. All restaurants and stores in town take credit cards. The Budda (sic) Cafe was excellent - it’s Italian, with pasta, pizza, salads and desserts. Plenty of local places with rice, beans and meat. Lovely people. Very relaxing.
- J.Albert (10/5): - Down to earth, quaint, and simply perfect! We loved the fact that it is not located in the main village. This allows for wild life to surround the hotel and waking up to Howler Monkeys screaming outside of your room, the abundance of bird sounds, and the lush green life around was beyond spectacular. Magical location!
- Rebecca (8/5): La Baula - Pictures on hotel.com do not reflect the condition of the hotel. The floors had a lot of cracks and holes letting in insects and small lizards at when the lights were on in the room. Dark netting over windows didn’t allow much light in. Food was great. Bartender was amazing and went above and beyond during meal service, he made our visit! Overall great atmosphere, quiet and safe.
- Rebecca (8/5): La Baula - Food and atmosphere were very good. The meals we had at the hotel were better than those in Tortuguero Village. The bartender made our visit amazing. He was so attentive even at meals, he handled several roles very well. Our guide on canoe tour into the canals also worked for the hotel, he had us out for 4 hours when our tour was only two. The rooms could use some updating. The wood floors had many holes and weak spots. All sorts of insects came in once we turned on our lights at night. Overall, was a great stay.
- Kim (10/5): - Perfect location,,, Sloth and monkey on the premise but shower is not warm.. workers were wonderful.. ants in the bed not so fun...
.
- Amy (10/5): Little bit of paradise in the rainforest - Absolutely loved La Baula lodge. Really helpful staff, basic accommodation but well kept and really clean. Pool was lovely. Was definitely the best mid range place to stay. Did cost to travel to town each way by boat but that was also part of the experience. Expensive for food so just eat /drink in town.
- May (6/5): Great services. Poor room. - Great services. Room is like camping cabin. There is no activities there unless you take a water taxi to across the island.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Loved the location; the room was basic but had all that was needed; the staff were very attentive; food was fabulous;
- Holly (10/5): A short stay ... - I was greeted warmly. My room was MORE than expected; 3 beds, fresh 'n' clean, hot water ... breakfast included next day was delicious (lots of variety:-) The grounds are a day well enjoyed in themselves between the lush flowers & fruits, birds overhead, lizards & crabs, trails, pool .. I felt safe and well cared for - definitely will return for more! Thank you
- Elaine (10/5): - Lovely accommodation. Staff really helpful with checking our forthcoming car rental and also gave advice on travel to collect car.
Added bonus was howler monkeys in the grounds. Dinner and lunch was a bit pricey at $15 per person. We had this the first night but the second day went by boat taxi into the village where everything is much cheaper. Great stay overall
- Jennifer (8/5): Cabin-like feel - Tortugero is magical! The canal tour was so amazing we did it two days in a row! I’d recommend Adrian as a guide- he was super knowledgeable. The staff at La Baula was happy to help make arrangements for tours, taxis, etc. The room was totally adequate- more like a summer cabin, with no glass in the windows. I found it charming and even did a little audio recording at 6am of the crazy amount of noise from the rain and the birds. The ceiling fan was totally adequate and we were maybe even a little too cool at night. They serve 3 meals, sometimes buffet style if there is a large group, table service with just a couple of options if the place is quiet. The food was okay- about average. Staying at La Baula means that you have to take a water taxi into town if you want food outside of La Baula’s serving times. All in all we liked it and would stay there again!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Peaceful cabin surrounded wildlife - Beautiful surroundings. Lots of wildlife to see, we saw a two-toed sloth in a tree above the cabins. The pool is in good condition, but the sunloungers need replacing as they are falling to pieces. Food and drink is a bit expensive but the village of Tortuguero is only a short taxi boat away ($3 pp). Breakfast was very filling and a great selection. Would definitely recommend this hotel.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Loved this very natural experience. The boat ride down to the resort was so fun. Clean and cozy rooms. Great breakfast. We were woken up in the night by poring rain but the sound of the howling monkeys in the morning and bright sunshine made it a wonderful experience. Kayaking in the morning to see caimans, birds and monkeys. Pinch me.
- Jordan (8/5): Good for the price - Overall for the price the stay was exactly what we expected - the common area and pool were very nice. Rooms are basic as the price would dictate but the lack of AC was the only unfortunate part of our stay. Rooms were much warmer than outside.
- Verified traveler (6/5): La Baula - The lodge was ok for the price especially since you can't really find any "amazing" hotels in Tortugero. Staff was great. Make sure to arrive during daylight. Also, flashlight and insect repellent a plus!
- Megan (8/5): Wonderful service, basic jungle style room. - The staff is very helpful and organized. The grounds are beautiful. The food is tasty and fair priced. The rooms are very basic. Typical of rooms in remote areas. Thin mattress and not a lot of space for a family of 4 to move around or even put our bags. But the lines were soft and clean. There is no a/c and very little ventilation. The room is unbearably hot at mid day, but the pool is a nice place to cool down. Wifi at the reception and cold filtered water and coffee are always available at the restaurant for free.
- Brad (8/5): - The location was good, food was great, convenient for tours and staff was very helpful. Wildlife was seen right in the property (monkeys, sloths, iguanas, birds). The hotel was not run down, but could use a facelift.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location, super nice and friendly stuff - living there just one night for national park tours. The hotel is 2min water taxi away from main park ($2/person). The hotel stuff is super nice and friendly. We missed breakfast due to longer than planned earlier morning tour. Hotel stuff cooked breakfast for us when we came back 1 hr later than breakfast time.
The wifi is weak and there are lots of mesquites. But that is rain forest, it is expected. Highly recommended for the national park stay.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Easy going Lodge - La Baula is a laid back easy going Lodge close to Tortuguero. To get to the village of Tortuguero it's a five minute water taxi ride, this where the best choice of eating places are. Also access to the coast and turtle tours are located here.Tours are available to be booked from the Lodge but we felt that better value could be had from doing a deal with the many tour companies in the village. The Lodge itself was acceptable we did ask to move rooms as the one that was first allocated was in need of refurbishment, there seems to be a program of upgrading going on. The disappointment was the food, we ate from the buffet dinner selection on the first night and found it to be not really up to the standard we would have accepted. However, the breakfast buffet did offer an egg station which meant that omelettes and fried eggs were freshly prepared. The big plus was the pool which was a real boon when the temperature was sitting around 30 plus. The staff were lovely all smiles and Pura Vida.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location on river in jungle 3 min boat ride - V laid back , relaxing , lovely staff, food basic but lovely local spicing
- Verified traveler (6/5): three star - An ok hotel of about three star quality. Food ok, shower was excellent, coffee available all day. Boat taxi to main village readily available. No wifi in rooms. there is an ATM available in the main village.
- David (8/5): Great place - Beautiful place and surrounding
Very welcoming people
The pool is clean and fun
Some upgrade to the shower would be nice
Best breakfast ever
- Kenneth (10/5): - We had a great time in the lodge, we will definitely comeback another time. Totally recommended
- william (8/5): Great location, very nice grounds - Across the river and slightly down stream from the town. Five minute water taxi ride to town center. Grounds full of birds. Dining area/loungibg area outstanding with view over the river. Free water taxi shuttle to the airport. Rooms are basic, no hint of luxury there if that is what one desires in this outstanding natural setting.
- CD (6/5): Great View/Great Potential/Run Down - The Good: Right on the water with it'a own docks to take water taxis and tours. Beautiful location.
The Bad:
- Everything seemed run down.
- No A/C (an important preference for me)
- Staff undertrained and not very professional
- we ordered a few drinks while waiting for a water taxi and the bartender started talking in front of us in Spanish to a coworker on if he really had to make the drinks since we were waiting for the taxi. He obviously missed out on the brown skin present and that half of us speak Spanish. We made sure to point that out.
- another bartender simply replied "No" and turned around when I asked for a particular drink. I finally found out a bit later they were out of the ingredients for it.
Overall won't be recommending this place.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Paradise - Great hotel, good value, just across the canal fom small town.
They set us up with a good early morning tour where we were able to see some of the wildlife and birds ,howler monkeys ,Tucans and white-faced monkeys.
I recommend this property for anyone
- Manrique (10/5): Excellent staff - The entire staff made us feel so important. The constantly see through that we were comfortable and having a great time. The rooms and overall facilities are dated, but it is what is expected from a hotel in the middle of a secluded rain forest. The offer lots of cool tours. Breakfast is very rich and offer dinner at a very reasonable rate.
- george (6/5): High expenses in transportation to and fro to the - Not worthwhile to stay here because of the inconsistency of the boat taxis price by the operators who are not honest - you spend more money on the transport than your visits to the attractions. Only good for one or two night stay. Don't go there from May to July! Rains a lot
- Verified traveler (10/5): Just getting to the hotel was an experience! - I didn't realize that we would be taking a small motor boat through the winding jungle rivers to just get to our hotel, it was like being on a safari. You see so much wildlife on the way it's just beautiful. When they drop you off at the La Baula dock, it looks like you're walking into the dark forest but don't fret, the colorful lodge and the friendliest staff in the world are there to greet you, as well as a couple adorable pups. Meals are delicious, I considered the staff as friends, and the opportunity to explore Tortugero National Park and all the wildlife included was the most rewarding experience. Pura Vida!
- Verified traveler (2/5): This is a back Packers hostel - not a hotel/lodge - This is very deceiving to call this a lodge or a hotel, no amenities and the rooms are horrible. Rooms have no air conditioning and beds are similar to ones in hostels. really terrible experience and not for families for sure
- Verified traveler (4/5): Very disappointing. - Specially the bathroom was all wrecked, very poor cleanliness and totally in distress with tile broken and old. They say the hotel was reformed in 2010, well the bathroom clearly was not. Room was fine, nothing more than two beds with poor mattresses. The swimming pool was green. Staff was kind, nice and pleasant, breakfast was good. The towels where folded like a nice heart (really corny) and a swan, however i wonder if anyone thought about the condition of the bathroom. Quite disappointing.
- Ravi's family (6/5): Lodge in the jungle - The lodge was okay, but there was no A/C or ceiling fan. Portable fan on stand was provided. Room was packed with 3 beds so no room to walk and no other furniture. Not worth the price we paid for such bare minimum room. All inclusive price didn't include alcoholic drinks either.
- MIGUEL (8/5): Turtle hotel - Great attention, location, and nice grounds.
- Luz Adriana (8/5): Nice hotel and good food, but room too hot - There is no air conditioning and we stay in a room with windows in only one side of the room, so it felt too hot, even with two fans. The staff was very nice and also the food.
- Verified traveler (6/5): OK, just... - This is a very basic hotel - think youth hostel and you won't be far off the mark.
Rooms were consistently 5-10 degrees warmer than the outside temperature (and it was 30c+ outside...), with only a fan, so be prepared for sweaty nights. Decora is dated at best and very spartan.
Swimming pool was good, but way too small if all 40+ rooms are occupied.
Staff were very nice and helpful.
Breakfast is very good.
Location is a problem, as the hotel is across the river from Torteguero village. Once you are at the hotel you are very limited with your options in terms of entertainment/food etc. Food at the hotel is reasonably priced though.
The hotel offers 2-3 crossing to the village for free, but you will have to pay for a boat taxi to get back (USD3/person).
- erika (4/5): Not a good stay.. - Hotel staff wasn't very friendly, did not smile at anyone, no greetings. The rooms have a very uncomfortable bed, scratchy sheets. There was a hole in our floor. Windows don't close just a bug screen that can easily be broken into. Meal prices are very high, for 15$ a meal you can go into tortugureo and eat in one of there "luxury" establishments. One of the few positives they had nice showers, good pressure and stayed warm. One staff memeber that did care to give good service was Michael at the front desk! I would not recommend this hotel.
- marilen (8/5): great stay for a good price. - Hotel was great. And the food was great. About $15 pp for additional meals. The only downfall is they don't have AC. And it gets hot at night. But there are congos and Tucans and sloths all around you. Very beautiful hotel with a great staff.
- J+M+O (6/5): Nice hotel on Tortuguero waterway - Nice short watertaxi ride from Tortuguero side of waterway/canal to the beautiful Lodge on the jungle side of the waterway/canal.
- Mara (8/5): Nice hotel - Good hotel, pretty grounds and buildings, decent rooms, nice pool. Staff was ok, but didn't go out of their way, and often seemed distracted or unavailable. Have to take a water taxi to town, three dollars round trip, can add up or be a little bit inconvenient, but not too bad.
- Haim (8/5): Nice but not outstanding - The ground is beautiful but the room is not that clean and well maintained. Food was good and the pool is nice.
Don't expect 5 star hotel rooms. It's pretty basic
