Guest Reviews
- Alain (10/5): - Hôtel très agréable
- Tom (10/5): - We loved our time at Kinparo, authentic Japanese style accommodation in a great location with great access to Kyoto.
- 856paulav (8/5): Ryokanlife - Very friendly staff, excellent breakfast, central located, right to the Nishiki Market. Easy to get around. Great Onsen with everything you need, soap, hair shampoo and conditioner, hair drier, clean facilities and very well maintained.
The Onsen is separate women and men.
- sherrio444 (4/5): Nice staff but really old and run down - We came on vacation for two
Nights. This place I found on this site. The people were so kind but the room was old old old. The air conditioning was awful and noisy like an airport - and it didn’t cool the room at all I had to go out to the hallway to get any coolness.
Overall disappointing. There are way better places.
- Mo Tao (10/5): - It is an old-fashioned Japanese style hotel. The staff were very nice and the room was spacious for 4 tatami beds. The breakfast was Japanese style. It was delicious and unlike the buffet style, it was a set prepared for each of us. So it was hot and delicious. Each night when we returned to hotel, the staff had already prepared hot water for us so that we can have tea in our room. And there was a little hot spring and the basement of the hotel. We had a great time there.
- kikokicks (8/5): Located in the heart of Kyoto for tourists - Location: Accessible from Kyoto Station to the local subway (then walk about 4-5 short blocks). Walkable to nearby Kanagawa River (and the uber-touristy Pontocho), and Gion district.
Staff: limited English, but very friendly and accommodating
Room: great Japanese home setup (ie tatamim mats during the day, futon beds at night). Clean toilets and fresh towels.
Extras: Onsen only available from 15:30 to 00:30H. I wish there’d be longer opening hours.
No breakfast or dinner included (which I thought was standard for “ryokan” style accommodation).
Overall, good stay!
- Meovu (10/5): Great ryokan experience!! - It’s a ryokan but somewhat modernized, so it actually worked out fine for us. We had 2 toddlers and they love sleeping on the floor. Breakfast was traditional and was delicious!!! Gotta be the highlight of our trip. Staffs speaks some English but adequate for communication. They were very nice and helpful to us. The front desk and the ladies who served us breakfast were fantastic! It’s right in the middle of a great area, Nishiki and Gion is just 10 mins away on foot. Highly recommended!!!
- elizahiuyanc (10/5): Feel like home - Great location, the food market is right at the back while the main road is a few steps in the front, close to metro stations and department stores.
Room and the entire hotel area is clean and spacious. Staff are friendly and helpful! Two times a day of making the bed, once a day of refilling tea and refreshment. I felt especially spoiled by the fine Kyoto breakfast every morning. The hotspring at the basement is a bonus. It is small and basic, but a good way to destress before and after a long day out!
- 186padraigm (8/5): Nice Hotel in Cetral Kyoto - I stayed in this hotel in March 2018 to see the cherry blossoms and experience all the sites. Although the hotel is a little old, it is very clean and comfortable and it has a great location. The staff were very helpful and I enjoyed the Japanese breakfast.
- HaDa2000 (6/5): Clean, spacious room and tatami experience - I would like to give it a 3.5 stars but its not quite "Great", so I gave it 3 stars.
The hotel is clean, room is spacious, like most ryokan, it has a hot spring bath area. However, somehow, it gave me a run down feel. Its a bit old, the hot bath area is not fancy, in fact, pretty basic. The room is comfortable, but again, basic. Our window was blocked by some construction material from outside, we couldn't even open the window, so the room is dark all the time.
- DianeT931 (10/5): Outstanding location, comfortable and great experience - This traditional style hotel is older, but spotlessly clean, in an outstanding location. The staff are friendly, and our room was very comfortable. Our first experience in a traditional ryokan-style, so we were a little clumsy: not knowing the correct protocol for footwear, bedding made up, packed away, moving rooms for breakfast and even how to prepare the components of breakfast, but with some tolerance and humour from the staff we managed. The traditional bathroom (separate for male/female) was fantastic: cosy, warm, clean and an amazing experience. We would definitely stay here again for the location, experience and comfort. With the minor language issue, we didn't realise that we had to change rooms at the requested time for breakfast so the first morning was quite hilarious, a scramble to dress and arrive graciously one floor above to a beautiful traditional breakfast. Highly recommended.
- NewBhamster (6/5): Traditional ryokan-style hotel in the heart of Kyoto - We came to the Kinparo from the Hoshinoya Tokyo, the latter of which is spectacular (and 3 times the cost), so there was a period of adjustment. But even grading the Kinparo on its own merits (rather than relative to a higher-class hotel), the main thing it has going for it is location and deluxe multi-dish breakfasts and dinners. My family's favorite dinner was the beef shabu shabu, where diners boil thin slices of beef in boiling water then dip them in sauces for flavoring. But aside from the location and food, the room seemed dated and tiny with few amenities. (My daughter tired of so much traditional food during our 3-night stay, and she would not include the food as a plus.) It was interesting to stay in a traditional hotel once, but I'd choose another hotel if I return to Kyoto.
- expatRio29 (8/5): Great location & value for money! - Japanese style sleeping in a very good location downtown Kyoto! Quite and clean room. Friendly staff. Don´t expect luxury, but with the high prices in Kyoto we found this to be of great value and comfortable. We did not include breakfast, Starbucks is just down the street. Also 20m to Nishiki Market. Walking distance subway and railway, Gion and Higashiyama district!
- Jasmine (8/5): Great Location and Friendly Staff - Really nice ryokan just a minute (or less) away from the famous Nishiki market. It's also just a minute's walk away from the main Shijo street where there's plenty of departmental stores and the likes. We even walked to Gion from our hotel, and it took us only 10 - 15 mins.
The staff were really professional and polite (as expected of the Japanese). They do speak a little english. The amenities and service were great too.
Thoroughly enjoyed our time in Kyoto and experience of staying in a traditional ryokan.
- 491peachym (10/5): Great location - It's really near Nishiki Market and Starbucks! There are a lot of shopping districts near this hotel. The lobby is very bright and clean. The room is clean and spacious with complete amenities. When they make up the room, everything is fresh and new like the towels and toothbrush. It is a wonderful experience to sleep in a traditional Japanese room. Highly recommended for a family like us.
- Jasmine (8/5): ryokan in the best location - service staff spoke bare english but they had printed ready directions to popular attractions. Ryokan isnt the luxurious sort, gave an 'old' feeling but very, very clean. Public onsen was a great addition and very well maintained too
- PaulC108 (10/5): Traditional Ryokan experience, excellent location and value ! - We stayed three nights here and enjoyed every minute of our visit. The rooms are very well presented in traditional style, the staff are very helpful and friendly and the property is ideally located for all of Kyoto's wonderful attractions.
The Nishiki market is 2 minutes walk away from the hotel reception, there are numerous bars and restaurants and the subway station is a couple of blocks away.
I shall definitely return here on my next visit to Kyoto.
- Shehzad (6/5): Seems overpriced for the authentic ryokan experien - I'd rather spend the money on a decent hotel
- sandra (8/5): Nice hotel good area - It was nice hotel in good area we had futon beds to experience the Japanese way . Big rooms but no wifi in rooms as advertised very disappointed only in lobby so if wifi is needed you have to go to lobby . Shopping area is fantastic
- 321sandrad (10/5): Great hotel - Nice hotel clean very big rooms but the wifi was non go in the room. You could only get wifi in the lobby . Bath house was on the first floor and there was a bistro right next door plus star bucks right on the corner . No wifi in star bucks unless you join . Staff were friendly limited English . Beds were filled out every nite and hot water urn was provided hot very nite Flat screen TVs . Different shoes and slippers were provided for ever space like different ones for the toilet area and hotel . No shoes for the main eating and sleeping area
- duanwu (8/5): - The public bath was great.
- ThePassenger26 (10/5): Wonderful stay - Stayed here for three nights with family. The tatami rooms are great for small children as they can roam around and play. Everything is nice and clean. Rooms come equipped with shower room, toiled and small sink. TV, and a balcony with safe and refrigerator as well as water boiler are available as well.
The staff is very friendly and made us welcome at all times. The breakfast and dinner are traditionally Japanese and strongly recommended.
Would also recommend the public bath. Not a real onsen, but very relaxing. I went late at night and had the whole place to myself.
The location of Kinparo is great as well. Just around from the main street with shopping malls and restaurants and within walking distance to Nishiki Market and subway/JR.
Would definitely come back here.
- Myong O (8/5): 만족합니다 . - 만족스러운 숙박시설중 하나입니다. 난방이 되지않아 추웠다. 서비스나 객실 청결도 객실상태는 아주 만족 하며, 교통편도 아주좋다.
- RoaringFamilyTrips (10/5): Great location, wonderful staff - Everyone in our family LOVED our stay at this authentic and well kept inn. First of all, the staff was friendly and wonderful. While their English was limited, they really took care of us. The futons were “magically” folded and put out every morning and night. We ordered the breakfast from them, which was the one of the highlights of our trip. We ate at their banquet room every morning. The breakfast table was beautiful to look at; the individual food was presented in their own pretty bowls. We had fresh soft tofu, soup, and fish every morning. This was the best breakfast I ever had!
We had the “tadami” room, which was a good size room by Japanese standard. I was amazed that how the room stayed at the perfect temperature without the hot air blowing (usually noisily) from a vent. They also provided fresh tea and some sweet snacks to the room every day.
My daughter and I got to use their public bath in the lower floor, which was also very clean and nice.
One caution is that the ryokan has no English sign. We had to show the taxi driver the picture of the place the first time. Afterwards, we just kept their Japanese business card to show to the taxi drivers.
The ryokan is right behind the “Kyoto downtown” which has tons of shopping stores and restaurants. It was very close to Nishiki Food Market, which we enjoyed a lot. The macha (green tea) mochi from the market was to die for.
- Bun Fan (6/5): Clean hotel near shopping area of Kyoto - Nice hotel with clean room and helpful people. A few steps to shopping area, and you can even walk your way to the temples.
- nsud22 (8/5): Great location, large rooms - Kinparo was a pleasant surprise in Kyoto. It's a few steps away from the main shopping street of Shijo dori, walking distance from the glittering nightlife of Pontocho alley, and located at the mouth of the Nishii market. The location is unbeatable. We feared that the six-tatami-mat rooms would be tiny, but were pleasantly surprised to find a small apartment type set-up. You get the living/sleeping space, plus a small patio overlooking the street plus a bath area. The rooms were well-appointed and had everything from a scent diffuser to slippers. The owners don't speak English so you'll have to prepare beforehand, for example, if you want them to serve you breakfast and dinner. To our delight, the owner had a handy tablet for translation - so you could speak your english request into it, and it would translate it into japanese. Quite funky.
- 344carlag (10/5): great hotel!...but no speak english.. - the hotel itself is in a great location, you step out and to your right you have the market
the hotel staff were always very helpful and courteous, HOWEVER THEY DID NOT SPEAK A WORD OF ENGLISH! but they made themselves understandable.
the room was traditional and the room services were good.
and there was a public bath which was was amazing
THE BEST THING WAS THE JAPANESE BREAKFAST I TOTALLY SUGGEST IT! IT NEVER ENDED AND IT WAS A VERY UNIQUE EXPERIENCE.
if i ever go back to kyoto i would definitely stay there again, im glad we choose this hotel
- Jules (8/5): Great location. Traditional Japanese room. - This is a great location and home base for exploring downtown Kyoto. Just around the corner from the Fish market. And from there the covered street continues to lead to the shopping district, night life and an easy walk across the river to the Gion district. The hotel itself is clean and has the simple Japanese style. The desk staff speaks enough English to be helpful. They had us leave our room key at the front desk which was handy as our group of 4 split up. And They were friendly even when we came stumbling in late at night. They don't have parking, but do offer a discount $18/night parking at a lot 5 blocks away.
Most rooms don't have their own bathroom but instead share a hallway bathroom and of course the onsen in the basement. We spent a little more to include the private bath in our room, which was a deep short tub. The tatami mat room was simple and clean. Beds are the futon mattresses which they roll out in the floor for you. Comfy enough for a couple of tired tourists. Smelled strongly of green tea (scented burner in the corner). There were cookies, tea leaves and a hot water pitcher waiting for us, which was very nice. I do wish they had the tea already made though, simply because I didn't know how much to use in the pot or what to do with our used tea leaves when we were done brewing so I made ours too bitter. We spent $230 for 1 night /5 people on a Saturday night. Though 1 member if our party got sick and couldn't come. Our room would have been the same room but $30 less expensive if booked for 4 people. The Japanese typically charge hotel rooms per person and because they roll out only the specific amount of mats, cookies, chairs, teacups that you need, it's good to be truthful about your number of guests.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great service and it's located in the main shopping areas of Kyoto.
- noonie1966 (8/5): Surprise package - Our family of four stayed at Kinparo in a family room during July and had a great time. On arrival we were welcomed like family with doors opened for us and much bowing and we were seated in the lobby and handed fresh hot towels to refresh us after our trip, which was a really nice touch. The hotel is a Japanese style ryokan with traditional tatami mats, a table with four low chairs and a seating area. Also comes with a air-conditioning, flat screen television, fridge and safe. There is also a private bathroom and separate toilet as well which was handy as our kids didn't want to use the baths downstairs. To be honest, the bath is not really big and the shower nozzle was in an odd position so you couldn't use it in the traditional sense without getting the whole bathroom wet but I guess the whole point is to use the communal baths downstairs so you experience the Japanese culture. Everyday we had a fresh pot of hot water so we could make ourselves green tea and Japanese treats/sweets to go with our tea. I was concerned about how we would cope sleeping on floors and with no traditional beds but really we enjoyed the experience. There was actually more room without beds, it was spacious, and it was nice to spread out. If we were tired during the day we would pull a mattress out of the cupboard and sleep on it. Every night and every morning the beds were made and put away for us which was wonderful. Its a little hard sleeping on the floor but you get used to it. We had a balcony off our room which was especially handy as I could do washing and put it out to dry. My husband and I did try out the communal baths, it was relaxing but too hot for us. The best thing about Kinparo though is their location, it was super handy. They are located in the downtown district in a small laneway right off Shijo-dori where all the major department stores, restaurants and shops are located. We just walked out the front door, turned left and walked 20 metres and were in the midst of everything. The subway station Shijo is 5 minutes away while the Hankyu subway is 2 minutes away. There are heaps of buses that pass along Shijo-dori and you can catch a bus to anywhere like all the temples, shrines and castles. We even got the bus to Arashiyama from this street as it was easier than using the rail. You can travel anywhere within the city limits of Kyoto for 220 yen regardless of istance (or get the bus day pass for 500 yen for unlimited travel). Gion was 5 minutes walk away and the covered shopping arcades of Termachi and Shin-kyogoku were 2 minutes away. Nishiki Markets is a must see and is literally 30 seconds around the corner fron Kinparo. The staff were very very friendly and very obliging. All doors were opened for us with a bow and the did their best to help us with everything we asked. We didn't really have any problems with communication although there was one gentleman who spoke fairly well and that was handy. (Note; if you want English brochures stop at Kyoto station visitors bureau as there is none at the hotel and no tourist info centre close by). They were very happy to organise forwarding on of our luggage to Tokyo for us and even rang our hotel there to let them know our luggage would be arriving. There was even offers of complimentary umbrellas to use on rainy days. Couldn't fault their service. The only thing I would say is that the room could have done with a bit of an update. The cupboard doors looked like a quick paint job had been done on them and the curtains had a few stains. The walls were pale green and a bit dull looking and made the room look a little dark. I was expecting white i guess. However they are only small negatives. The only real negative with our room 310 is that it had a laneway below and for some reason every morning, bar Sunday morning, from 2am onwards a man would be wheeling his many metal trolleys outside and making quite a bit of a racket. Nobody else seemed to hear him but as I'm a light sleeper it was disruptive. Never found out what he was doing so if you value your sleep ask for a room on the opposite side of the hotel
