Guest Reviews
- makoben1 (10/5): Unexpected beauty - Sometimes when you travel internationally, to a remote location, you never know what you’re going to get; however we were pleasantly surprised by this hotel. The staff went above and beyond helping us with various questions. A big shout out to Roberto, who went with me to get a tire repaired!!
We were in need of catering and they came thru for us on that as well!
The rooms are very comfortable and the entire place is really beautiful and secure.
Location is about 10 min from the airport; however not within walking distance to much. That was fine by us, because it was an oasis at the end of the day!
- Andrzej (10/5): Great - Fantastic base in Calama
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very friendly stuff. Due to a bank holiday no restaurant was open in the evening, so they prepared sandwiches for us. Very near to the airport.
- gina_hung2000 (10/5): Friendly and helpful staff - I stayed here when transferring to Calama airport. The on-site restaurant was closed then. However, the front desk was so nice to find a delivery which was amazingly delicious! The front desk even helped to get a cab and communicate with the cab driver to take me downtown to run some errands, which was extremely helpful for someone who did not speak Spanish.
The room was clean and comfortable. A true oasis!
- mk663 (6/5): - The location is not very convenient. Staffs don't speak much English but were helpful. Room service the Cesar salad was surprisingly way too salty as Chilean food are quite blend.
Reception promised to call taxi to airport was 5000 pesos ended up driver asked for 7000 pesos.
- helen (6/5): Great hotel if weren't for the music - This was a beautiful hotel. The rooms are nicely decorated and good size with a nice sofa and lovely comfy bed. The staff were very helpful. Although the resuarant is pricey rooms service is good and cheaper.
The downside for the night (a Saturday) I stayed was the loud music that made it impossible to sleep until it finished at around 2am.
- Gina (10/5): Comfortable Hotel with Exceptional Service - The service at the front desk was exceptional. I arrived when the restaurant in the hotel was closed. But the front desk not only ordered delivery for me (as I don't speak Spanish) but also get me plates, utensils, and cups to enjoy my food and drinks.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Se avevo mal recensito MDS questo è pure peggio. Stanze minuscole colazione scarsa e di bassa qualità
- EUNICE (10/5): Hermoso y tranquilo Hotel. 100%Recomendable.
- marianne (10/5): Great airport access and quiet - Great-quiet. Disappointed restaurant was closed as we enjoyed meal a few days earlier when we stayed here.
- marianne (10/5): Best affordable hotel ever - Loved it! So quiet. The bedding is luxurious. Slept so well. Amenities in nice bath included razors and toothbrushes! Dinner was delicious. Breakfast buffet was ample. Would stay again!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Really cute hotel, with an amazing breakfast! Room was clean, comfortable and quite. It's a 10 min cab out of town but that suited us well. There are also a couple of restaurants near by (though the one on site was overpriced and the food not great I thought).
- Gijs (8/5): Redelijk hotel. Beter dan op de fotos te zien. - Kamer was benauwd.
- ShawnMI5 (8/5): Unique - Stayed for a couple weeks. Most people here seem to travel through on their way out to San Pedro.
Quite understated style from the road, but is nice once you’re in and figure out the design. Well kept.
The room is comfortable, and reasonably quiet, which I found to be a problem at another hotel, so I switched to this one. There are a lot of dogs in town, and they fight and bark all night...
Staff was friendly, and receptionists mostly speak English.
Restaurant is good, unless you’re vegetarian. Lots of good beef choices, but not all items available all the time.
Only complaint is the wine prices. A glass is $6000, plus tip. For perspective, a bottle of the same wine at the store is under $5000. Felt ripped of on that. The prices of food is high, but found to be in line with other places, so no complaints there.
- DanielK502 (10/5): A hidden gem. - The hotel is clean, nicely decorated, and its restaurant serves quality food with an exceptional musical entertainment on weekend nights. What distinguishes this hotel is the friendly and accommodating management and staff. Our travel agent secured last minute reservations when our visit to the Atacama desert was washed out by torrential rain. The manager helped arrange local tours, offered to drive us into town to visit the markets, and arranged transport back to the airport.
- douglasd58 (8/5): Very comfortable room and good restaurant - When booking, I liked the photos of the traditional materials used to build the hotel and I liked the big rooms. I was very happy with my stay. The staff were very welcoming, friendly and enthusiastic to help.
Its a pleasant and interesting 40 minute walk into the centre, a 10 minute bus journey with plenty buses. We also used a taxi to arrive and depart.
The restaurant was good, food was tasty for dinner and breakfast, and the staff were attentive. Not sure if anyone spoke much English as we practiced our Spanish with everyone.
We had a problem in the morning with limited hot water in the shower, and the staff were concerned and reduced our accomodation bill by 50%. Cant say fairer than that!
- Roland (10/5): Great hotel in Calama - Stopped there on the way to San Pedro and it was worth it. Good quality price ratio (better than in San Pedro). All as advertised. Friendly staff, Good internet. The hotel restaurant is expensive but the food was high quality.
Accueil chaleureux.
- Anna-Maria (8/5): - Nice short stay in a pleasant hotel. The hotel staff went over and beyond to accommodate my need for transport when the taxi, which had been ordered did not arrive. I was very grateful for them to drive me personally to my appointment.
- charmian (10/5): Great hotel with convenient location for airport - Lovely rooms, good restaurant, helpful staff, close to airport
- charmian (10/5): Great rooms and lovely staff - Really lovely helpful staff who went out of their way to help us with tours (despite our late arrival). Warm, stylish room and great breakfast too.
- Sandy (10/5): - Beautifully designed rooms , lovely unique outdoor desert garden areas, a great restaurant. This place was atreasure.
- Vaughan (10/5): - Noi Borde Loa is a lovely hotel on the outskirts of Calama. For us it was perfect for visiting San Pedro de Atacama on a day trip by car because it's exactly on the right side of town to get quickly underway. The staff were very anxious to ensure everything went well with our stay. The restaurant is very good.
- Suzanne (2/5): Not a good choice. - This is a beautiful property with excellent food and very comfortable rooms. However, in the room behind us was a couple who were making an extreme amount of noise starting at about 8 PM with loud talking, banging on the walls and bed and what sounded like high heeled shoes on a tile floor. The noise continued until past 2 AM. We first contacted the night manager about 11 PM and asked if he would call the occupants and ask them to quiet down. The noise continued. At first it sounded like people outside our room but we traced the source to the room behind us. My husband finally went to the front desk and asked if he would do something about the situation. His proposed solution was that we should pack up our belongings at 2 AM and move to another room. Of course that was totally unacceptable. Although the rest of the staff were pleasant and helpful if you have a problem after hours don’t expect a reasonable solution.
- Jaroslaw (8/5): Comfy - Nice and comfortable hotel for a business or airport pre-departure. It’s clean, modern with nice amenities. As it is located in the surburbs it is important that the restaurant is open and you can have dinner there. Otherwise going to town may be a bit of a hassle. Big breakfasts, can be happily served in your room upon request. Very efficient reception service.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent, great and tasteful decor. The restaurant and breakfast were great
- Verified traveler (8/5): Excellent hotel, outer location - Big, comfortable and stylish room in modern-style hotel at edge of Calama by the river. Nice bar, attractive restaurant where it's best to stick to the simple dishes. Not much of a neighborhood, kind of industrial, but the upside is you're very near the airport. Staff very nice and helpful, however important to be able to speak some Spanish here.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Juan - Estuvo nuestra segunda estancia acá.
- Popiordanov (10/5): Next to the river the Calama best kept secret - Good design of the interiors and the property at all. I really like that small boutique like hotel in the nowhere at Calama. We enjoy and relax. The chieff was ver good and remember ud about the food experience while travelling in Chile. And the price goven via Hotels.com was excellent!
- Mark (10/5):
Stop en route to San Pedro - This hotel provided an excellent stop for us between Arica and San Pedro. It is excellently located on the edge of Calama with spacious car parking. It provides very good restaurant where we enjoyed an excellent evening meal. The only downside was a slight altercation with the credit card machine where the staff were unsure as to whether they had charged us USD93 or USD 9300!
- islandboy88 (10/5): good choice - stayed two nites and were so happy with the beauty of the grounds and the hospitality of the staff. Language was never a problem, and the staff could not be more kind and helpful. Our TV was out, so he quickly came and reset it. Food was very good for diner and breakfast. Across the street is a big fun Peruvian diner establishment.
- 618boba (6/5): Disappointed. Not for me - I stayed here on the way back from San Pedro in order to visit the Chuquicamata mine complex and take away the need to rush for an early flight at the airport.
I wanted a comfortable hotel in order to rest for 24 hours after a few days in the Atacama Desert. This hotel appeared to offer what I needed and be a little stylish as well.
I found it difficult to find as the hotel names displayed outside are hard to see from the road until you are at the gated entrance. The road itself is very busy making it stressful if driving alone.
Once through the gate I had to be shown by security where the entrance to the small hotel is as there are no signs and it's hidden around the back.
The hotel style is modern with lots of design twists using ethnic influences and local materials. Some of it works well. Some of it jars and personally I did not like it as the design was too busy and not thought through.
My room was very clean and well maintained although I did not like the fact the room maid moved all my things in the bedroom and bathroom when doing her maid service. The result? I could not find a pair of shoes that had been moved for a few hours and nearly left behind toiletries that had been tidied away.
The bedding is excellent however I found the bed too soft to be comfortable for me. The window in my room (2) is covered by two blinds that let light in and you cannot leave the window open for air as it is full size and opens directly onto the passageway from reception to the rooms. Therefore insecure. The room also has no air con but plenty of heating for the colder months.
There is a lot of traffic noise around the hotel from the main road as well as music from a nearby restaurant which went on late and also in the daytime. It is not the hotels fault but it disturbed me and for this reason alone I would not stay again. Maybe ask for a room with a high number. There are around 18 or so. The lower numbers are nearest the reception and restaurant and the road. The higher numbers are further away.
The wifi kept crashing in the room and I asked it to be reset three times during my two night stay.
I gave up trying to use the TV as it was too complicated and I was worried I was going to be charged for in house movies. No instructions or info in English. There is no tea or coffee in the room although there is a pricey mini bar. Room service is available if you want it.
The bathroom was good with an excellent shower, hairdryer and products if you needed them.
Breakfast was a buffet with eggs to order. All fine. I ate in the restaurant once and it was OK. Nothing special but it was expensive. Service was not as good as I had expected. Indifferent and very little English spoken.
There is very little near the hotel and you really need a car to get around.
If I returned to Calama I would not choose to return to this hotel and I would try another.
- alextE8764IR (10/5): The best choice to stay in Calama - Beautiful hotel, rooms decoration and clean. High quality beds and pillows. Quiet and very friendly personnel. I was there for work and when I asked for breakfast time they said 7pm, too late for me. however the hotel made the arrangements for my breakfast earlier. Very nice from them. Helpful staff.
The Rica Rica sour a must at the bar. Very nice ambient in the restaurant (attention: it is closed on Sunday as almost every restaurant in Calama for dinner). Good food and music on Thursday and Friday.
without doubt, Borde Loa should be my hotel in Calama next time.
- mauro (8/5): Funzionale vicino all'aeroporto - Hotel moderno e funzionale vicino all'aeroporto. Personale professionale e cortese, camera spaziosa e pulita, colazione discreta nessun servizio accessorio. Comodo ristorante all'interno (fuori non c'è nulla).
- vivthetraveller (8/5): Delightful surprise in Calama - This is a delightful hotel. On the outskirts of the town and so much the better. The room with a fairly small double bed had everything one could want. The restaurant was great, informal, just right and on the evening I was there, live music! I would really recommend this hotel - it is stylish in a simple way.
- JulienL8333 (6/5): Amazing Hotel / Restaurant service very low - The hotel is most probably the one offering the best rooms in Calama regarding confort, high quality beds, bathrooms, decoration. Everything is there to make your overnight perfect.
Very hard to say the same about the restaurant that provides a large choice of local wine and beef. Sad to see the waiter not even listening to us. You order a piece of beef that you pay 30 USD and they are not able to cook it how you ask it. Also the service is extremely slow even when there is only 3 tables of customers.
Very good hotel if you do not plan to have diner at the restaurant.
- Heike (10/5): Awesome stay, best in Calama? - We had one night stay in Calama on our way back from San Pedro to Santiago. We loved the decor of this small trendy hotel . Not only was the service great but even the room service ( club sandwich ) was awesome. We enjoyed our stay throughly and would come back if ever back in Calama. The one little drawback is that its a 15 min walk to town. But as Calama has not much to offer!! It did not matter .
- 40paulf (8/5): Good choice - Nice little hotel located just a short drive from El Loa airport.
Beautifully decorated, cosy rooms.
Nice bar with terrace, however, for whatever reason, neither the bar nor restaurant are open for lunch or dinner every day... If open, sandwiches are excellent and the beer ice- cold.
Friendly staff.
Nice quiet location and a better choice than the bigger hotels in Calama.
Would stay again.
- rob (8/5): Rustic and elegant - Check in was a little slow but very attentive during the process. The rooms and lobby/restaurant where comfy, well lit, and had a consistent theme.
We only ate breakfast at the hotel. It was common Chilean style and was sufficent to start our days.
The rooms were great with nice bedding and quality linens. Bathrooms are large enough for two and well appointed.
Only critics would be its a little off the main area of town, but very close to the highway to San Pedro and the airport. We were there in a cooler time of the year and one of our rooms had an issue with the auxiliary heat, but it was quickly resolved as soon as we contacted the front desk.
Of the many hotels in Calama we saw we would defiantly choose the Borda Loa again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Calama - Great place to stay very clean and friendly staff.....
- Romalo60 (10/5): Home away from home ... Plus - Spent over a week at Borde Loa a few months ago and will stay there every time I and my colleagues visit Calama. Borde Loa hotel has been design to provide its customers a quiet, beautiful and relaxing space near the city and it provides an excellent service. It is new, clean, ample space to enjoy the outdoor gardens, and very importantly it offers very comfortable beds! it has tastefully design common areas and restaurant. The restaurant offers a well rounded menu and the food is well presented with excellent quality and flavor. The management of the hotel and service are clearly focused on Customer satisfaction. Well done. See next time in Calama.
Linie wohl Minenarbeiter gedacht.
- Rene_Velasquez (6/5): Nice hotel, just don't eat at the restaurant! - I am currently writing this review whilst in my nicely appointed room at Borde Loa hotel. Being objective, this is a nice hotel. The rooms are comfortable and well decorated. It is in general a nice hotel to stay in.
There is a big but... We were unfortunate to dine at the hotel restaurant not once, but twice. To say that the Chef is awful is an understatement. The menu is contrived, overly complicated (chicken, stuffed with spinach, Ecuadorean shrimp, and pistachios served on a potato purée with olives and nuts and an asparagus and squid sauce), and poorly executed. Oh and did I mention expensive? The average meal is $25 USD which is fine if it were a great meal. But as we have tried 4 out of 8 dishes on the menu (btw 2 of 8 were not available), I feel that I can safely attest to the terrible quality of their food.
For example the steak I ordered as medium rare came out well done. It was tasteless, and was covered in a canned white asparagus and cheese sauce. Terrible.
The chicken my wife ordered had to be sent back twice to be properly cooked. The stuffing of spinach, Ecuadorean shrimp, and pistachios was freezing cold and there was no way in hell she was going to eat them.
Did the staff ask whether we were satisfied? No. Did they ask what they could have done to make the meal better? No. They just asked for their 10% gratuity. Nothing else.
Seeing that it is Xmas eve, the manager and her family were also eating in the restaurant. Do you think that she asked whether we were satisfied seeing that my wife's chicken was sent back twice. Nope.
Pretty much, you should eat elsewhere or buy some empanadas on the roadside. Trust me they will beat whatever crap they serve here.
Otherwise, nice hotel. Nice interior design, comfortable bed.
My honest, heartfelt recommendation is to bypass Calama entirely and spend your time and money on San Pedro de Atacama.
- Catherine (6/5): Don't get your laundry done here - Great hotel, just what you need after three days roughing it in the desert. It's a shame they tried to gouge us $US90 (not a typo) for 6kg of laundry - laundry that they gave back to us STILL WET!
- seeblockygo (6/5): Great hotel, do your laundry done elsewhere - After three days roughing it in the salt flats and desert of Bolivia we wanted somewhere nice to stay on the way out of Calama Airport. This place certainly fit the bill - white sheets, fluffy towels, room service (very much at western prices).
BUT, be very wary of getting your laundry done here. We gave them 6kg of laundry and said we need it for checkout at 8am. Obviously they forgot about it, kept us waiting until 8:45am and tried to charge us $54,000 for the pleasure! It doesn't cost $US90 to get a load of laundry done anywhere in my experience. Ridiculous.
Thankfully the woman on the desk, Genesis, was very understanding and professional about the matter. It took three calls to the manager, who was none to happy with my insistence that we shouldn't pay anything for the return of our still wet washing, before it was sorted out.
Now we're waiting for a taxi to the airport, and hour after we had planned to leave. I just hope we can still make our flight.
- Boramy (10/5): First class boutique hotel, very good value! - We were so impressed with the hotel. The service was outstanding and attentive. The room was tastefully decorated with traditional theme but with modern design. The food at the restaurant was possibly the best meal we had in Chile. We asked Leonardo (the front desk clerk) regarding tours in another city and he went above and beyond in terms of gathering information for us. The owner of the hotel was also very informative and engaging. We do not usual write reviews but felt compelled to do so after such a wonderful stay at Hotel Borde Loa.
- Destination805744 (10/5): The best hotel in Calama - Newly built, not verly well known to tourist but has splendid services. My father got a burn from a geyser just a day before the check-in. We asked for a location of near by hotel, then sent us two nurses to our room to take care of his injury.
Furthermore the overall design of hotel is amazing. Room is beautifully decorated and artistic.
My father, who has visited Calama for 3 times, quotes this was the best hotel and an oasis in the desert
