Guest Reviews
- John (10/5): Nice place to stay - would definitely stay again - The owners/hosts were very friendly and helpful; room was nice and comfortable. It really is a rom over the pub, which was cool, and there were no noise issues at all.
- Martyn (8/5): - Easy access to all shops and amenities
- Tiiu (10/5): excellent - Very excellent, I was very happy
- Jennifer (6/5): - The staff were friendly. Our room was clean and comfortable. The only downside was we had paid for breakfast, unbeknown to us however it was no longer being made available to guests. A refund was given in lieu .
- Leslie (10/5): Smudgers holiday penzance - Hotel was very nice and clean, friendly staff very helpful nothing was to much trouble and only a five minute walk to town centre and ten minutes walk to water front and train station .
Had a good few dsys thereat hotel and will be going back
- Kokilaverny (10/5): - Close by to shops and travelling
- Robert (10/5): - Raymond and staff were great, very helpful with local knowledge. You are above a tavern, the local clientele are wonderful to chat with, sing with and generally have a great time! Excellent breakfast as well, more than you can eat!
- scott (10/5): - Despite being above a pub, the room was quiet and comfortable with a rather nice view. Everyone was helpful and kind. Agood experience all around.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Not worth the money !! - We stayed here for 3 days during the heatwave, weather was gorgeous but room was unbelievably HOT one tiny fan made no difference whatsoever !! twin room was very small and we both felt a bit claustrophobic, window catch was broken and had to 'prop' things in there to keep it open, bathroom smelt of drains the whole time we were there, shower kept over-flowing...probably due to a blocked drain !! NO food other than a pre-bookable Sunday roast, and no Rose' wine !! Lot of money...for not a lot, plus it is a hike back uphill every time you go out...won't be staying again :-(
- Mariah (10/5): - Clean and tidy. Conenient location!
- Martin (10/5): - friendly, accommodating, very clean, reasonably priced, easy walking distance to station/beach
- MT (10/5): Wonderful welcome in Penzance. - The Fountain Tavern gave my friend and I a very warm welcome. We stayed there on route to the Scillies and we have recommended the Tavern to friends. The room was spacious and very clean, we were given a bottle of water with the room along with the usual drinks. Beds were very comfortable and after a long journey were very welcome. We were able to bring our take out evening meal back to the Tavern were a table was set up for us in the quieter part of the dining area. This was excellent and we were encouraged to enjoy the atmosphere with the locals. Nothing was too much trouble for Sally and the staff.
- Terence (10/5): - we booked for three nights on a room only basis, very pleased with the standard and cleanliness. We found the owner very helpful with local amenities and places to visit.
- R (10/5): Cheap and cheerful - Nice pub ‘B&B’ at the top of the town. Great location to walk into town and get about in general. Hosts very hospitable. Clean, tidy rooms. Not the Ritz but everything you need for a few days get away. Would definitely go back.
- Tracy (10/5): Will stay again - Excellent hosts, comfy room which was clean and had just what we needed
- Richard (10/5): 28 Oct Penzance - Friendly & efficient
- Salvatrice (10/5): - Spent two nights and everyone was very helpful and welcoming.
- David (10/5): - Excellent
- John (10/5): - Very friendly and helpful staff
- theresa (10/5): - So friendly especially ivone recommended bfast us goid and so near to everything. Definitely coming back again 😀👍
- Christopher (10/5): - Excellent mid week stay above a real pub. Granted not a weekend, but quiet and comfortable. Lovely hosts. One point for improvement would be the landing light that shines around doorframe at night, bringing some light into what otherwise is a carefully designed room with blackout curtains. Def would stay again
- Nadia (10/5): - I had a small private twin room with ensuite bathroom all to myself, very clean room with everything I needed - TV, hairdryer etc... Yvonne often checked if I needed fresh towels or if I needed anything else. Yvonne and her family were so kind and welcomed me very warmly. I would definitely recommend this B & B, and I would also be happy to stay here again in the future. I also want to mention that they were very accommodating and flexible, regarding my dietary requirements - I have several food intolerances, and Yvonne and Sarah took very good care of me at breakfast time ; ) Thank you all at Fountain Tavern, you all made my stay very pleasant and enjoyable. Hope to see you all again some day!
- John (8/5): - Very friendly and cosy
- Ian (10/5): - Excellent over night stay and exceptional breakfast, friendly staff.
- Caroline (8/5): - Our stay was exactly what was advertised. The bed was comfortable, room was clean, and everything including the wifi worked just fine. We thoroughly enjoyed breakfasts downstairs cooked up by the lovely Yvonne and team. Would come again!
- Paul (10/5): - Exceptionally friendly. Lovely breakfast.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The property was lovely and clean and the landlords were very friendly and couldn't do enough for our family
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Room 2: a beautiful room in a beautiful facility in a fantastic location (no 19 bus, Causewayhead leading to Market Street and Habour)
It was as total hassle re check in and check out tunes: new management Did not honor 2pm check in as per ORBITZ and did not honor 11am check out as per ORBITZ.
This issue turned a pleasant authentic Cornish experience into a horrible nightmare.
BTW: basis for selection was 1) the 2pm check in time as we’re arriving at 6am via coach 2) it’s a Tavern but there was no pub grub as per ORBITZ
- Verified traveler (10/5): - .
- anne (10/5): - Friendly staff good food good location enjoyed staying there
- Verified traveler (8/5): Lovely hosts, perfect for an over night stay. - Lovely hosts, perfect for an over night stay.
You have to bear in mind that this is a pub and not the ritz hotel, but very accommodating to our needs and would happily stay here again! Rooms were clean, staff were polite and friendly and food was lovely!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Good location, recently redecorated rooms. - A reasonable price for a very large room, for a family of for. One of the beds, however, was substandard with a hard beam in the middle of it - it was more comfortable for one of our children to sleep on the soft carpet on the floor. Otherwise good for the money we paid. Nice full English breakfast.
- Stephen (8/5): - Very friendly and helpful staff
- Kate (10/5): Great family room with a warm welcome - We had an unexpected last minute stay due to travel problems and The Fountain Tavern welcomed us with open arms. We arrived in time for a lovely dinner from the restaurant. A large family room awaited with king bed, low sofa bed and travel cot, perfect for a young family. Breakfast was delicious too. A warm & welcoming place and they couldn't have been more accommodating. If I found myself in Penzance again I would check in here.
- Michael (6/5): - Located above a tavern which tends to be quite loud. Staff were friendly and nice but bed was not much and sound vibrated from below. Breakfast was very generous.
- Steve (8/5): Post John O'Groats to Lands End ride stopover - Restricted parking made unloading difficult, local parking was available.
Only real issue was the amount of time the food took to be served. Quality of the food was great but it just took too long, thankfully we were the only party eating that night.
- neil & mandy (8/5): Good pub with rooms - excellent beer and food. - Good pub with rooms - clean and reasonable.
Excellent food and beer. Dining area is within main pub.
Situated on edge of town, convenient.
Staff very welcoming, and helpful.
- Verified traveler (2/5): What can i say.... - Booked three nights stay. Bed was awful, very uncomfortable and pillows over used. Bathroom coil have been cleaner but no. Very tired decoration. We found the staff extremely helpful and polite. However, the back stairs to the rooms were grimey and the walls scraped and grey with use, the room itself was clean, except for the window and its surround which needed a good clean. We had the impression that there were staff problems in the kitchen as both supper and breakfast were not a smooth operation.breakfast was no so good no topup if juice and milk finish. The tables and seats felt sticky. Food was basic I hope these are temporary glitches as the staff themselves couldn't have been more willing and friendly.
- myra (10/5): Visiting Minack theatre - last minute booking and was made to feel very welcome. Comfy beds, clean bathroom, great breakfast. What more could you want.. oh yes pub
- Kevin (4/5): A poor room at the Fountain Tavern - The room we were booked into had a bathroom on the top of the stairs. It says its a shared bathroom but we were informed its not its ours. It contained a bath with a shower that consisted of the rubber shower hose pushed on to the hot and cold taps. We stayed two nights the room was not cleaned or the bed made and the coffee cups were not cleaned or coffee replaced. The breakfast was good English breakfast and the food served in the bar was good even if the service was slow.
On arrival we were informed that this was the budget room which is not stated when booking. The TV in the room had a portable ariel and when you walked past the TV it lost signal.
- SJ (4/5): One night - We found the staff extremely helpful and polite. However, the back stairs to the rooms were grimey and the walls scraped and grey with use, the room itself was clean, except for the window and its surround which needed a good clean.
We had the impression that there were staff problems in the kitchen as both supper and breakfast were not a smooth operation.
I hope these are temporary glitches as the staff themselves couldn't have been more willing and friendly.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Overnight stay - Room was nice and big enough for us. My problem was that our key opened up next doors room! We found this out when we accidentally opened the door next to ours by mistake. The gentleman inside seemed a little confused to say the least. Was a shame the shower/toilet from above dripped all night which kept me awake for the majority of the night.
- Michelle (6/5): - The location was very convenient to pretty much everything in town, about a 15min walk to the train station and 5mins to the buses to get around to other bits of Cornwall. The rooms are above a pub, so if you are a light sleeper don't plan to be asleep before 11 most nights. The room was clean and the shower was great, but the bed was not comfortable (needs an upgrade). Breakfast every morning was really nice. It's a small place, only five rooms, and the staff were all very attentive and friendly.
- Helen (6/5): Wish the room were little bigger and the view . - The room was nice but did not slept well as I felt Spring on my back and has bad back!! Then next day lady who cook breakfast has over done the bake bean and was not feel like home pub breakfast. Like short small breakfast for what I pay was lots of money for four days. The bloke who did the breakfast on Monday Tuesday were the best as I had everything two lots of bacons sausage mushroom bake bean tomatoes and canary bread were the best one. Shame could have same bloke every day for breakfast. People in the pub were great helpful gave me lots of what going on??
- Mary (6/5): Nice place! - Nice pub, breakfast was good. Friendly people. Rooms were a bit
small and the window rattled.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Penzance Accommodation - Very friendly staff, but a very tired, old building in need of modernisation.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Bare minimum - Booked last minute for one nights stay. Room situated above the bar so noisy until pub closed. Bed was awful, very uncomfortable and pillows over used. Bathroom coil have been cleaner. Very tired decoration but new carpet. breakfast was served in the back of the pub. The tables and seats felt sticky. Food was basic.
- romin (10/5): Cozy pub in the town centre - Warm welcome upon arrival. Clean and cost room. Great breakfast the next morning and overall a great value-for- money stay.
- Shera (6/5): Central location - Arrived very early as got night sleeper. Was warmly greeted by Carol who was happy to take our cases and offered us a cup of tea. We returned late afternoon and was shown to our room. We stayed in the Beacon room and were disappointed with the view which was the roof of the rear of the building! Bed was comfortable and bathroom adequate but in need of some tlc. Good breakfast with full English and alternatives including some soya milk that I had requested. All the staff were very friendly and would return but request another room.
- Razvan (10/5): 5 star hotel for me. - Nìce and pleasent stay. Excellent food and verry nice staff.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Not bad - Overall the stay was nice but a few things would have made it so much better. We had to store our luggage downstairs before the room was ready and we were assured it would be in the room on our return from an afternoon on the beach. It wasn't. After being shown our room we were told we would be given a code for the side door and wifi. After waiting we just went to ask for it. Being from North America, sometimes things work differently over here. A bit of instruction on how to get power to the shower would have been helpful. PS: it's a red switch around the corner outside the bathroom.
The location is a bit far from the train station and all uphill so be prepared for that. But there are lots of shops and restaurants nearby.
The room was clean, the bed was really comfortable, and breakfast was also good.
- Not Provided (8/5): friendly tavern - enjoyed the very friendly atmosphere, log fire, full cornish breakfast, and bus stop outside.
- Victoria (10/5): Excellent - Only stayed for one night but it was brilliant. Lovely room breakfast was good, couldn't fault the service either Would definitely recommend to friends :)
- Anjali (2/5): Bad experience - The prices online is 30%more than the actual price for stay( they charge less when u check in face to face ) , the things specified online is not provided like no wifi, no heaters, improper bathroom, the staffs are very rude and very bad service.
- Lydia (8/5): Inexpensive pub B&B in a great location - The staff are friendly and welcoming. The rooms are above a pub (but with a separate entrance). The music and talk from the pub is undeniably noisy whilst the pub is open, but after that it is very quiet (i.e. from c.a. 11pm onwards). For this reason, I wouldn't stay there with young children. On a more positive note, the pub provides very reasonably priced meals and the breakfasts are excellent.
- Dan (10/5): Great find - Lovely people, simple, clean and reasonably priced facilities.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Clean and comfortable - Decent accommodation, stayed one night and was clean and comfortable. There was quite a lot of noise from the pub below but that was to be expected when booking it.
- james (2/5): Worst Hotel we have stayed in. - When we arrived we were shown to a room, that wasnt very clean, freezing cold and the TV broken. They changed the room over for us. The bedding was yellow, instead of white. A bad smell about the place, mice droppings. At breakfast they had NO bread in the hotel, and the orange juice was so watered down. The best part was when we left-although we couldnt hand the keys in-we had to leave them hanging in the door, as there wasnt anyone about to see us out.
- Graham_U (8/5): Pleasant pub up the hill from the town centre. - We had booked their budget room but were lucky and given a free upgrade to the standard double. A Nice enough ensuite room although bed was very soft and creaky. The big budget room only has a shared bathroom with bath but no shower. We did not realise there was no shower when booked, and actually cut short our stay when we found out, but all worked well in the end.
For some reason we were sent to a cafe a hundred yards or so away for breakfast the first day, OK but a poor substitute for the inhouse breakfast on the Sunday, as juice/cornflakes etc were all extra at the cafe, and portions better at the pub with out the walk.
the pub itself seems to have a pleasant local bar at one end with an area about the same the other end set out for food. We didn't eat there but did enjoy a couple of late pints on Saturday night.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great hotel - Lovely hotel, very nice staff, excellent food.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great location for us. Great breakfast. - This was such a great place to stay, so much that we kept extending. The staff were excellent, the breakfast really set up for our days of hiking. We would recommend this inn to anyone, staying here really made a difference to our stay.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Really friendly and understanding staff.
- lionel (8/5): lovely country pub - Mature couple staying overnight in transit to the Scilly isles.
We had a few pints and a meal and loved the atmosphere of the pub
- Chok Sin (8/5): Reasonable accommodation .....great breakfast - Suits needs of our family of 5... Functional was the objective and it was realised.
- Arlene (8/5): Super accomodations for affordable price - Wanted to stay near city centre yet still affordable. Great place! Thanks to Martin for helping us feel right at home.
- David (8/5): - We were staying overnight , before catching the ferry to the Iles of Scilly .It would have been good if they served breakfast 30mins. Earlier so that guest like ourselves , catching the ferry , would be able to have breakfast .
- Amanda (8/5): Comfortable hotel with a tasty restaurant - The Fountain Inn was a comfortable hotel with a tasty restaurant about a 15 minute walk from the train station at the end of one of the main pedestrian walkways in town. Given their status as a Tavern they were also very flexible about our arrival time after a late train from London. The water heater in the shower was a bit unreliable and there were some spirited seagulls which woke us early each morning but that's part of the fun of being near the sea.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Not worth the price - We stayed in Penzance for the one night and it was very expensive for what we received. It was difficult getting the luggage up the narrow stairs and the room was so small that you couldn't swing a cat!
- Elizabeth (8/5): Overall good stay - Very nice staff and room was large, comfortable, and clean, with nice but basic facilities. Central location. We also had dinner in the pub and they have a new chef who is excellent.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The staff were efficient and helpful and the breakfast was okay. However the shower could use some attention and the water flow and temperature control were in need of updating. Location is a bit far from the action but it did have on site parking. We were only staying one night so it was fine for that.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Clean and comfortable room, with friendly staff. Stopped here for one night before travelling on to the Isles of scilly.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Quite basic pub, but room fine and apart from the seagulls, nice and quiet
- Verified traveler (4/5): Clean room 10 minute walk from harbour - Room was clean - bathroom could have been closer needed a shower for speed in the morning. Disappointed that breakfast was served too late for catching Scillonian 8-10pm and no offer of compromise snack. Food was expensive in the evening and not of the quality you would expect for the price.
- Cheryl (8/5): Good, but probably won't stay again - Only stayed for one night, the room was basic and clean. We had no television, but that was fine. Parking was a bit of a hassle, the lady who booked us in said we would be ok parking at the side of the pub but this wasn't the case! I ended up with a polite notice on my windscreen from a resident asking me to move my car. I put it in the 24 hour car park next door which is where I'd already put it so just be careful if you are staying for more than a night it could work out quite costly. I wasn't given the 10% discount from my food bill but by the time I'd noticed there was no one available to sort it out. The breakfast was delicious and the young lady who served us was very friendly, in fact all the staff were.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Very friendly place to visit - Stayed there one night. Taverna's/Hotel's every member of staff was absolutely great. Food outstanding, definitely recommend. Stayed in the budget family room(double+2 single beds),room was very basic, which was expected, bedding was nice and clean, mattress quite comfy,but... all of us had a terrible night because of the noise made by seagulls (bear in mind I can hear seagulls at my house and don't mind it at all).Possibly due to very old wooden window frames you feel that you sleeping with them on the roof therefore you can hear them VERY well.If I was planning to stay for more than one night in this town I would of have to find another hotel. Another massive problem was a shower in the shared bathroom, there are only two separate taps on the bath and again all of three of us really struggled with it.
Otherwise everything was very good.
