Guest Reviews
- Guillermo (9/5): -
- victor hugo salas amabiz (9/5): - Su decoración en general Los moscos
- Roderick (8/5): Such a beautiful Hotel with super courteous staff!! Historico y Magnifico - 20 foot ceilings, packed with old world charm but with all the modern conveniences ... 4 balconies in one room!!
- Saul (7/5): Fin de siècle faded grandeur, but a bit unloved - This hotel is on a beautiful square right in the centre of Mérida, and has all the faded grandeur and charm that makes the city so special. The room had a high ceiling and comfortable beds. There was no attempt to provide a warm welcome in this hotel, and it doesn´t really offer any facilities other than the room and a sense of history.
- SILVIA (10/5): Simplemente Bello -
- Robert (1/5): -
- Fiona (7/5): Wonderful vintage experience - Return visit to somewhere I stayed in 1980; the same incredible carved wooden door frames for each room and the pillared interior courtyard still in place. Then it had last been redecorated in 1948; now it was last refurbished in 1987 I think. Great vintage atmosphere and high ceilings; view over the Parque Hidalgo from the balcony; helpful staff. No catering or coffee except the Starbucks and Santa Clara ice cream shops on the ground floor. Bathroom was small but adequate (we had one of the smaller good value rooms).
- Richard (9/5): - Hotel is in downtown Merida, great location
- Janet (8/5): Historic beauty in center of old town - El Gran Hotel is the grand old dame in the historic center of Merida, opening onto a lively, shaded square of vendors and music, and easy walking distance to markets, restaurants (including a Starbucks right outside the door) and the stunning cathedrals just across the square. The hotel was built in approx. 1900 and retains all of its original beauty and charm, from high ceilings with intricate trim and cornice moldings to tile floors and marble stairs to antique furnishings and fixtures, doors, balconies, etc. It truly feels as if you were walking into a movie set and I had to pinch myself a few times that this was real. There seemed to be few other guests and was quiet inside, compared to the busy bustle in the streets. Our rooms were on the 3rd floor (by US definition) and involved walking up many stairs. One room included a beautiful seating area and multiple small balconies, the other had a small seating/changing area with enormous doors to help limit street noise, and with its own balcony as well. Rooms have AC, beds are full size not queen. The grand old dame is showing her age. There are large cracks, crumbling and broken pieces in ceilings, crown moldings, and floor tiles. The hotel is built around a central courtyard, each floor of rooms with large and lovely seating areas around it. Because the courtyard is open to the sky and the heat in the Yucatan is extreme, the common areas can feel excessively warm. Also, the nightly noise of street music can be troubling to some, so request a quiet room if you are a light sleeper. However, for our group these things were very minor compared to the astonishing and classic beauty, the kind and helpful staff, and the perfect location. If you are not a fan of history, antiques, and aging glory from another era, and prefer comfortable chain hotels, which I find bland and lacking in character, then this is not the hotel for you. We would gladly return and wish El Gran another 100 years of fabulous history.
- micaela (8/5): - The hotel Is beautiful with it's old colonial style, it is like going back in time. Staff is always willing to help and nice. Location is great The shower is not having good water pressure and I reckon need to be updated a bit
- Barbara (8/5): Amazing historic building in the heart of old Merida - Great location - just a block from the main square. Friendly staff. Amazing architecture. While the building was beautiful - one of the oldest in Merida - the decor was a bit tired. No elevators (though the bell hop was happy to carry up your bags) so expect to do a lot of stairs. Room amenities - there was an iron and a fridge but no hair dryer. Took forever to get hot water in the sink and the shower.
- GABRIEL (9/5): -
- Romane (9/5): - L'emplacement
Le style de l'hôtel
Les chambres sont grandes
- Eva (10/5): -
- Jack Rugger (10/5): -
- andreas (9/5): If you like special hotels - this is your place! - Very old and stylish building. We had a huge room facing the Plaza Hidalgo. No need for AC. Very central location. Reception not helpful for organizing tours. Only expensive offers.
- Mateusz (7/5): - Sam budynek jako ciekawostka. Miła obsługa. Dobra lokalizacja.
- Luis (8/5): Can't go wrong with the location. - Location, Location, Location. Walking distance to many other attractions. Parking information before hand such as where to park your vehicle before checking in.
Fijn bed, hele ruime kamer, toplocatie.
- Elizabeth (8/5): -
- Condon (8/5): -
- jeffrey (9/5): Grand hotel, great location, good bed, furnishings quite worn, lacks breakfast - Location, the grandeur of the hotel, we had a large suite which we liked very much. Chairs in the room were worn out, no elevator, no potable water in the room or offered in the hotel, loud music at night Thursday-Sat, had to run water a long time to get hot water, does not offer breakfast.
- Leo (8/5): -
- Eric (7/5): - nice old hotel with large rooms and high ceilings no restaurant
- Eithne (10/5): - The hotel was in a lovely location, on a lovely little square and just a short walk from the main plaza. The hotel itself was beautiful, my room had everything I needed and the staff were very helpful with getting me a taxi for an early departure nothing
- Emma (8/5): - I loved the architecture of the building with its large covered courtyard in the center and the charming old fashioned style furniture and rooms.
The location was excellent, just a block from the cathedral and the main square, and a short walk to the museum of the city of Merida, wonderful markets, and the paseo montejo. I wish they could have provided water, even for a reasonable cost. I arrived in the evening and was thirsty and just wanted to go to bed, but there was no available water in the hotel. There is a vending machine in the lobby but the water was sold out. I had to buy a very overpriced bottle from Starbucks.
Also, because if it’s central location, it’s a little loud at night, but it wasn’t too crazy or too late, just don’t expect to go to bed early in silence.
- Therese (9/5): - Wonderful location near the main square and on a smaller square. It’s a lovely old building and the shared spaces are very beautiful. The rooms are showing their age but were clean and a good value.
- pammysoo (9/5): Absolutely GORGEOUS! Stunning, like being in a museum! - Absolutely loved the historic building. It is beautiful and so centrally located. The hotel is gorgeous… like stepping back in time. Truly magnificent! Loved it all!
- Jesús (7/5): -
- debbie (8/5): -
- Helen (9/5): Like stepping back in time - The building, the furniture, the style in general. I am so happy a place like this still exists and hasn’t been ruined by modernisation. A tricky door on the bathroom
- Joseph (8/5): Charming, comfortable, clean but needs some improvement - Beautiful architecture with large open lobby. Location is phenomenal and hotel was very clean including room and bathroom. Comfortable bed and seating. Great shower. Friendly staff. Excellent service with bags up to 3rd floor. The room and bathroom needed work. Bathroom door needed to be jammed shut. A small table in bedroom seating area would be useful. Sheer curtain needs cleaning/replacing. Tiles and wooden facings in room need repair.
- Shivani (10/5): -
- Oscar (5/5): - The ambiance I took a cold shower
- Katarzyna (9/5): Great experience! - Location, architecture and general feel! As if you travelled in time! Exceptional! Can’t think of anything!
- John (7/5): -
- Seppo (10/5): - Hienotunnelmainen vanha hotelli, isot huoneet.
- Tania (9/5): -
- Servando (9/5): -
- Hawley (10/5): - Beautiful, old world.
- Cathy (8/5): -
- Mary (10/5): - We had a lovely stay at the Gran Hotel.
Close to shopping and lots of restaurants. As well as churches and the cathedral. Very safe area. As always the friendly people were great. Be careful with the step up to the bathroom in your room. Only way they could do it to fit the plumbing but a bit dangerous.
- Arturo (8/5): -
- Chantel (8/5): -
- Jon (7/5): Great place if you're looking to be in the Center of Merida - I've stayed here three or four times. Its a old hotel with no elevator but I like its old archetecture. You can't beat the location. That's what makes it so great. Its surrounded by tons of restuarants and shops. And near parks where there are always activities going on. It's not the Hilton or Marriott but I know that going in. Its just a nice old building and the staff are very friendly.
- Anthony (10/5): -
- Alyssa (8/5): - Gorgeous hotel in the heart of Merida. Could have used some more amenities like a couple of bottles of water in the room upon arrival.
- Stefan (10/5): - Great interior design - colonial style. Amazing view! Central and convenient. It’s a big noisy but that’s because of the central location
- Márica (1/5): Orrible hotel. Stay away from it! - The position. Free parking is not included on 25th and 26th December, despite what it says on the Booking.com website. When we arrived at 2 p.m. on 24 December, the receptionist told us that we could park in a public car park that worked with the hotel. However, we could only take the car and go out before 6:30 p.m. on the 24th, after which it would be closed until 7:30 a.m. on the 26th. When I told him we needed the car on the 25th, he said we could use a private car park, but the hotel would not pay for it. When I pointed out that this wasn't mentioned anywhere (neither on Booking nor on their website), he told me to go elsewhere, which would have been impossible and very expensive, of course. We had no choice but to pay for the private parking.
Unfortunately, the room wasn't great either:
1) There were so many mosquitoes that we had to sleep with mosquito repellent. The shower was clogged and in a terrible state. The towels were so old and worn that you could see through them.
I could go on with many more unpleasant details, but I think these are enough to illustrate how poor our stay at the Gran Hotel was.
- lavender (9/5): - Right in the zocalo. The room was cool and comfortable Because it is so central it is also pretty busy. Inside the hotel is peaceful.
- Emma (7/5): - The location was good, right in the centre and the parking was really convenient The hotel is quite dated and the bathrooms were tiny. Plus on the Saturday night there was music on the square outside that was very loud.
- Ed Mir (10/5): FANTASTICAAA !!! - UBICACION Y LIMPIEZA. PROBEMAD DE CONECCION DE INTERNET
- F Desgranges (8/5): -
- Jennifer (9/5): Historic hotel in a perfect location! - This hotel is absolutely gorgeous. When you walk inside and up the stairwells you are transported to another time. The rooms are fine and the air conditioning in the rooms work well. The staff are friendly and helpful. You are located right on a beautiful square and less than a 5 minute walk from the main square. WiFi works great in the rooms as well.
No hubo nada!
- Church (10/5): -
- Julia (9/5): Would definitely choose this hotel again! - The fact that it is a very charming, old historic hotel. It’s beautiful on the outside and inside. The location is perfect and it’s nice to have a Starbucks on the first floor. The parking is a little far, but it’s free!
- Michal (10/5): - Amazing hotel, the building is phenomenal, location is just in the middle of center! Staff is very warm and helpful!
- Kathleen (8/5): A very nice hotel and excellent location for the price. - The location is excellent! It’s beautiful and clean. The staff was also excellent, especially the bellman! The stairs, and no elevator. The step in and out of the bathroom.
- marie-Laure (7/5): -
- Thomas (10/5): Historic hotel in fantastic central location - Historical building in a fantastic central location close to many tourist activities. Some repair/maintenance needed
- Croce (10/5): Perfetto - Molto bella e particolare Non c’era il Phon
