Guest Reviews
- Delise (10/5): I'm in love with this place. - Such a lovelylaid back place to stay. Pretty much self service as they are busy creating a restaurant on site. Which I'm sure will be fabulous when it's finished.lovely pastries and coffee at Coco Cafe just down the road.
- Gudrun (3/5): Don't trust the photos - Located in the old town These rooms are a bad. No reception, no receipt for the room, very small rooms, no storage space, no glass windows, only wooden shutters, no mosquito net, the room smells like a restaurant kitchen, loud bar music from the street, no WiFi, no TV, no kettle.
- Chin (10/5): - Close to the train station, most of the visiting areas are walkable, and plenty of dining options.
The only thing, that has nothing to do with the hotel is that there is a karaoke bar around the block that blasts its music late into the night.
- Kenneth (6/5): Great location matters - This hotel is located in old town Ipoh, it does not have a lift or WiFi so it is fairly inconvenient. But the room and the bathroom is clean and tidy. It doesn't have much but it is reasonable. The location is key and that is all it matters.
- Zul (1/5): Not worth for money - The vibes only Not worth the price. No TV, no wifi, no amenities, no drinking water in the room, bed hard like wood, corridor have a weird smell, the staff not showing or telling where is the room is. No lift. Most importantly, no soundproof, im having a hard time to sleep listening next room doing intercourse screaming and screaming and screaming. For this kind of price i get a better hotel that have a tv, wifi, netflix, soundproof, bigger room and else
- Sau (1/5): Bad -
- poh-sing (6/5): - Not wifi service in the guess room!
- Pin (3/5): Totally not recommended and not value for the expensive rate paid. - Location in the middle of the old town Not value for money. With the amount paid I expect a much better room and services. There is no one take care of guest at the counter. The hotel let the cleaner to take care which they dont know anything at all. Everything need to use Whatsapp to reach the person in charge which unfortunately very slow response. The whole check in process took more than half an hour. Room feel dirty as they are many decoration stuff which not properly cleaned. The room sound proof is the worse I ever stayed even with other old shophouses, when the next room speak softly, I can hear it as clear as if they are in the same room with me.
- Jason (1/5): Expensive, bad smell, small. - Cool looking lobby The room smelt really badly of damp. The bathroom had black mold over the walls. Tiny room for a family. Noise travelled between room. Checked out after 1 night which wasn’t simple but eventually got most of our money back. No apology. The offer of a double instead of a family room at no discount? Ask to see the room before you pay and don’t be bullied into paying cash- the business should pay for the transaction and not you!
- Kellie (4/5): no great sadly - location
price it’s very run down, there is no reception,
beds are hard and pillows are old
- Satira (5/5): Passable -
- Juliet (6/5): Booked and paid for 4 nights but stayed only one. - Very central to old town and it is a traditional type residence. Room was dark, beds were very hard and NO WiFi internet. Accommodation was not quite what we were expecting.
- Morene (10/5): - Lovely. Simply lovely.
- Verified traveler (2/5): happy 8 Retreat is NOT a happy place. - This is my repeat feedback since the first wasn't published by Hotel.com. There is no proper check-in services. Only one person taking care of everything. There is no wifi, no minibar, no cafe and the TV doesn't work. The toilet is in terrible condition with mouldy walls and mouldy shower curtain.
I see the website still falsely advertising that it has wifi and a cafe.
The bed is a hard rock mattress. We left after the first despite paying for 3 nights.
- Azlihana (1/5): not come again - below expactation near to Old town
- Nadjib (1/5): Bad - The design Advertised tv . No TV. No WiFi. Bed very thin. Feels like sleeping on a plywood. Very small room.
- Jonty (4/5): great place spoiled by the three failings listed. - beautiful place. great location. air conditioning sub optimal.
no Wi-Fi.
worst of all price quoted was subsequently changed and we were charged about 10% extra without consultation.
- Charley (8/5): Very good design - but a few improvements to make - We really liked our room and the very "arty" design of the hotel. The staff was helpful (we could left our luggages for the day while visiting). Perhaps not the best "quality / price", but it definitely has character. However a few aspects could be improved :
-the room was globally "clean", but the bathroom was not and would really need to be freshened (there was a few bugs inside...)
-a light next to the bed would be really useful
-the rooms are not well sound proof and was quite noisy
- Min (8/5): Very good - 3D2N
Location is Very good.
Very unique interior design. A little noisy sound dissatisfied there is karaoke from outside but not everyday .
- Carrie (3/5): Poor -
- Geetha (5/5): Passable -
- Karinsme (8/5): Very good - The room and the balcony was nice. The wood decorations everywhere are stunning. Great location in the centre of old Ipoh. The whole hotel smells mouldy, even though it's clean. Perhaps the management could work on that.
- Afiq (5/5): Passable -
- Anonymous (5/5): Probably my first and last. Not the worst I been but certainly not the best. - While sleeping in room 301. You can hear music of drunk people singing. Not too loud but still you can make sense what song they were singing. I got a room but it was like half a room because my room was the roof of the building. Something like an artic and paid RM 240 per night. BTW they so environmental friendly until they save up on providing customer mineral water and my son and me slept on the floor (with mattress)
- Jessica (6/5): Stylish Interior, Basic Services - This place has so much potential to be great! The interior is impressive. Time, thought and money have clearly been invested in the design. The hotel is right in the old town, so it's easy to pop in and out for toilet stops, water refills etc.
There is a small water dispenser for morning coffees. Rooms come with a bit of coffee and shower toiletries.
The pricing point doesn't quite match the room facilities in comparison to other guest houses I've stayed in throughout SE Asia though. AUD$20 less a night and it'd be fine.
There is just 1 bloke trying to do everything (maybe the team in the always empty restaurant could take their hands out of their pockets and muck in). He was trying to clean rooms at 6pm and after while checking guests in. So I don't fault him, he was trying hard.
There is little noise blocking. If you like hearing both sides of the neighbours' argument then you'll love this place. Same with hearing the Sinhalese Bar patrons singing drunkenly on a Sunday evening. Monday was surprisingly quiet.
What really REALLY REALLY lets this place down is the beds. I had read they were a little on the firm side. Mate! If you bushwalk and camp overnight on an 5mm inflatable mat you'll be right. If you want to pre-experience before booking, put a thin mattress topper on a bed of bricks and try sleeping. I felt every age related injury and ache the next morning after sleeping here, I assure you. I had a look, they're box springs with thin toppers.
- Vania (3/5): Do not stay here. It is not worth the pri - Location is good if you want to stay in the old town part of the city, like we did. It is very close to the train station ( walking distance) , so very convenient for arrival and departure. Overall very clean, toiletries in the bathroom. And the overall design of the building is quite nice, giving a cool feeling to the hotel. The experience overall was quite bad. There was no one at the reception, eve though we arrived during business hours. When you arrive, there is no one at the reception . There is a sign instructing you to make a phone call so someone can come and check you in. Our luck was that a group from Malaysia arrived at the same time that had access to a phone and could make the call. As I was travelling from abroad, I needed internet access to make a phone call. And there comes the second surprise, NO WIFI available for guests, even in the lobby. I have to say this is quite unbelievavle for a hotel in Malaysia in those days.
Reception remains empty the whole time, so no one to provide any kind of assistance or answer any question a guest may have.
The room was quite small, much smaller than appeared in the pictures. Room has no window, except for a very small opening.
- Yugendiran (10/5): Exceptional -
- Julie (6/5): Convenient and adequate. - The location is great, right in the old town. The room was small but adequate with all the quaint features I was expecting. However there was no drinking water in the rooms and although I could see a wifi connection I was told I couldn't have the password. There is no storage in the room so it wouldn't be suitable for a longer stay. The bed was on the firm end of comfortable for me.
- Amelia (2/5): - This property was dirty. The bed linen gave me itchy ness and the worst was there was no hot water. They use a solar without electrical back up. The next day wanted to change room but their hot shower was the same. They seem to encourage the patron with cold blasting showers! Not even a shower cap provided, it was devastating as I went to the salon!
- Dean (8/5): Well designed central hotel. - Beautiful, centrally located hotel. Well designed. Bed a little hard, but lived the wooden facades etc. Was disappointed than our reservation included breakfast but the hotel doesn't do breakfast?! We checked out at 11am butthere was no one in reception at all to give key too, which was a little odd.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - A charming place to spend a few nights in the old town.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent location, very centrally located by walking to restaurants, attractions, shopping, etc.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good value - Not too bad and value for money
- Pitt (4/5): There are better choices around. - Supply of hot water is unreliable. Replacement of wet towels and tidy up rooms have to be requested. Generally it lacks a service mindset and certainly over priced.
- giorgio (8/5): Nature - Nice little gem. Really a pleasant hotel. Only cos was the mattress too hard for my liking.
- James (4/5): Outstandingly funky but no place of rest. - I really wanted to give this hotel an excellent review. Beautiful, boutique, funky, great staff, excellent location. Regrettably, the comfort of the room was hideous. Worst bed and paper thin walls. Our neighbors crashed in at 1.00 am and I honestly though they had come into our room by mistake and I normally wear a hearing aid when not in bed. The discomfort of the bed was extreme. A kettle is provided but no tea or coffee so not much point. At 8.30 am on a Sunday morning no hot water either. I was very relieved to leave.
- Tsz Kin (8/5): Nicely decorated hotel with friendly staff - A very nicely decorated hotel which gives a relaxing atmosphere. The staff are also very nice and the breakfast is very delicious. The only down point is thay the room is a bit small and it is rather noisy in the morning in our attic room. Maybe other rooms would be more quiet.
- zhen (10/5): Very satisfied with hotel - Rooms are located above a lovely and quirky cafe. Room was very clean and everything worked well. A very lovely stay indeed. Location was perfect with good food and cafes all just round the corner.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Generally the hotel provide good accommodation. Hotel receptionist is not enough at time to provide customer enquiry. Overall experience is good.
- Kenny (4/5): Not value for money!!! - Small room, stained bedsheets, inexperience hotel front desk
- tom (6/5): Family run guest house - Small guest house, recept manned by youngsters. Cable tv channel limited and lost signal frequently throughout my stay.
