- Katarzyna (8/5): Beautiful house in great location. - Beautiful traditional house, wonderful garden, multiple rooms, a lot of space, great location really close to everything. Loved the experience. The only con was smelly kitchen I refused to enter (the kitchen is quite modern so I don't know why it smelled so bad).
- Loes (10/5): Exceptional -
- Francesca (10/5): A true Japanese experience - It was the second time we stayed here. We enjoyed everything. A true Japanese experience.
Good location, good services. Nothing, everything was perfect.
- Hester (10/5): Wonderful 100-year old traditional teahouse, we loved it. - This property was stunningly beautiful, a wonderful old Japanese tea house. We were absolutely delighted. Not for those looking for a luxurious modern hotel, but absolutely perfect for us. Very close to everywhere we wanted to go, right next to Nara park, but not far from the station. Takashi, our host, was charming and spoke perfect English. He recommended where to go and returned to the house to show us how to turn the heating on when it got cold. We had a wonderful stay and we already miss it! We couldn’t understand the Japanese heating controls - but our host returned to show us.
- Alison (10/5): - Amazing hostel in a 100 year old building! Beautiful garden. Central to all the attractions! Really really beautiful!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Japanese House - Cute little Japanese guesthouse near the main attraction in Nara. Was perfect for my one night stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent hosts, really welcoming and friendly. Great traditional room. Perfect location for anything you could want to do in Nara
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very old classic Japanese home. It really gave an old Japanese feeling. Was absolutely beautiful.
Douche propre. Cuisine propre et agréable. The et café offerts.
- Hung (6/5): - 还好
- SEW (10/5): - Walking distant to most of interesting place, friendly services, relax with traditional Japanese house
- Verified traveler (8/5): - This is an old traditional Japanese house, currently used as a backpackers. Taking that into consideration the experience of staying there is great value for money and the chance to stay in a Japanese house that has been kept with so many traditional features is not too be missed.
- Luis (10/5): - It was really close to the places I wanted to visit. As a 100 years old house, it is beautiful
- Connie (10/5): Super beautiful.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Friendly staff and visitors. I like the atea. Would go back. Nature lovers surrounding for tranquillity.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It is very close to Nara Park and the temples which makes it very convenient.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Neil (10/5): - Really stunning old teahouse now used as a guesthouse. Very traditional and in such an old building it cannot be totally 100% modern conveniences. If you want slick and modern go somewhere else but as an informal traditional style, reasonably priced guesthouse/backpacking hostel it was great. The owner was very welcoming and gave us lots of tips for the local area and is obviously very proud of her guesthouse and Nara. We had a beautiful room with a view of the garden to wake up to. We also had the opportunity to sleep on tatami mats, which won’t suit everyone but at least we can say we tried it. Excellent location for the deer park and shrines
- Hannah (10/5): - Guesthouse was very clean and beautiful, over 100 year old. Staff was super nice and friendly. Only complaint was that it was quite cold
- Verified traveler (8/5): - It’s very unique experience to live in the Japanese old house. The garden is very pretty. Host is nice. Feel welcomed.
- Truc (8/5): good location, nice property but restroom smell - The location is very good. It is very close to the Nara park, the shopping center, and train station. The property is very nice and cozy. There are two restroom and one of them is very stink the urine smell.
- Joakim (10/5): Money well spent - The location is excellent and close to the sights in Nara. Altough there were some minor hickups with a borrowed charger not working and a toilet not flushing (!) the staff was very helpful and friendly. The rooms were a bit cramped but ok. House was very picturesque and cozy with its own garden. Thank you for a good stay!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Hostel is just the right amount away from the big tourist spots to get some peace and quiet but close enough to visit everything! If you're upstairs, don't come here unless you can handle steep ones. Both receptionists that i dealt with were very friendly, informative and helpful. Had a little trouble adjusting the heat in one of the showers but figured it out eventually. Facilities were good. Common room and garden were very sweet. Other guests were lovely.
- Verified traveler (6/5):
- LJ (10/5): - Love the fact I'm staying in a 100-year old traditional Japanese home! Its cleanliness is actually better than some places I've been to, much newer and modern.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Je recommande - Bon accueil
- Verified traveler (10/5): A great stay! - Great value for the price, reasonable walking distance to all major sights, very helpful staff that gave us a great intro to the city and lots of ideas for things to do.
- Carm (10/5): - Perfect place to stay while visiting Nara. A very short walk to Nara Park with all its temples and deers! The staff was very friendly. The place itself is rustic and traditional, but comfortable and clean.
- Blake (10/5): quaint and quiet - Beautiful and quiet ryokan experience. Loved the history of the house, the staff, and the location. I wanted to cancel our booking with the next hotel just to stay here another night.
- Charles (8/5): - Halfway between station and the main tourist attractions which is useful
- Sophie (10/5): - Beautiful old house near Nara park. Staff were very kind and helpful.
- Kristen (6/5): Beautiful house, good location - The place was really nice (beautiful house and garden, lovely staff, very clean), but I think it would be important to have the right room and bed here.
I stayed in a bunk bed in a female dorm room -- the room was small and a bit cramped/awkward, and my bed was also a bit awkward as the bottom 1/3 was covered by a low ceiling (the others were fine, just bad luck of the draw I guess!). The other dorm room (mixed?) looked a bit bigger, brighter and less awkward.
Also, the dorm rooms were upstairs, and the only bathrooms were downstairs. The staircase is quite steep and squeaky, so not ideal if coming home late in the evening as you can make a lot of noise going up and down and up (I actually brought my toothbrush out with me when I went for drinks to prevent this!).
Location was great, still glad I stayed here, but I think it would been awkward staying in my particular bunk bed for more than one night. Other rooms, especially on the main floor, would be lovely.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Historic style hotel - Lovely hotel with traditional Japanese style. The beds were really comfortable. It was good value. Really close to Nara's main sights. Host was very helpful and welcoming.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Wonderful stay! - Fantastic place close to the Daibutsu and main restaurant district but quiet enough for quiet at night. The old Japanese house is incredibly charming, our room was so special and the staff couldn’t have been nicer.
- Chan Chuan (8/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Yiling (10/5): One of our best stay in Japan. - One of our best stay in Japan ! If you want to stay in a traditional japanese house, go there, you won't be disappointed. The house, the garden and the rooms are beautiful. Bathroom and toilets are shared but very clean. In winter it's a bit cold, therefore the kotatsu in the shared living room definitely brought us close, meeting and chatting with other people staying there. The young man in charge of the place is very nice and helpful. Also, you can reach the park by walking !
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Susanne (8/5): - Très froid, mal isolé. Mais magnifique et proche de sites touristiques.
- Soo Cheol (8/5): 2
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Nice lobby. The hotel itself is traditional japanese hotel style. The hotel has two shower rooms, needs to wait if all are full. Also, the windows on this hotel makes lots of noise when its windy.
- Gloria (10/5): Peaceful place - Wonderful quiet off the beaten path!
- Zimbo (8/5): beautiful old Tea House conversion - It was very nice, old but friendly! Just a bit cold. The heater was very noisy in the private room. Also, there was no clothes drier..
- James (8/5): Convenient budget guesthouse near attractions - This was a cute and quaint old guesthouse that used to be used as a tea Room. Staff was nice and helpful. The room was big enough for us but the only complaint was that it was super cold and that the heater didn't fully warm the room. Thankfully there was a heated blanket but we just wanted to stay in the bed because it was so cold! But it was still a good stay as it was very close to the train station and local sightseeing.
- Shaikh (8/5): Historical location close to Nara's main stuff. - This 100 year old tea house is very interesting to sleep at. The location is great (10 min to Nara Kintetsu station and Nara Park) and the wifi extends to the rooms, something some hostels haven't caught up on. The staff was very helpful and spoke English well. Keep in mind, it's a very old house, it could do with some renovations and you may be able to hear people walking in the halls at night, but overall, I really liked this place and would consider going back, especially for the price and location. There's a extremely nice Japanese garden as well on the premises. The common area has a nice view of it.
- Verified traveler (8/5): vice nice guesthouse - vice nice guesthouse, quite close to the nara garden.
- Angeline (10/5): - Such a beautiful old house, the property shows its age but as a 100+ year old ex-teahouse this just adds to its charm. Easy walk to Kintetsu Nara Station, temples, parks, and shopping district. Loved it. Would stay again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Amazing old Japanese house - The house itself is amazing with a beautifully scenic garden in the centre and the location for most of Nara's main sights is probably the best you'll get. However if you're above 5'10 be prepared to hit your head on everything or walk continually bent over, it's even smaller than most other places in Japan. I just couldn't be comfortable walking around smacking my head on door frames. Apart from that it's quite beautiful!
- Debra (10/5): Traditional experience - Really amazing hostel. The house itself is over 100 years old. Inside is an interior garden, which is so beautiful. You share the bathrooms with other guests, but it wasn't an issue for us. Our bedroom was 6 tatami mats large and had the shoji (paper) doors. It was really so authentic and just staying there was its own experience!
- Chloé (10/5): A great place to stay in Nara! - A wonderful place to stay in Nara! This old traditional house has bags of charm, and the common area, overlooking a lovely garden, is the perfect place to rest and meet other travellers. I wish I could have stayed longer!
- G (10/5): Very nice - Not far from Nara Kintetsu station or the park. The staff was nice and friendly. The room was spacious with comfortable beds, a nice heater/ac and good amenities.
- meng-cheng (10/5): NICE - NICE
- Verified traveler (8/5): you pay for what you get - It was nice, but there was a lot of masquitos and spiders, I slept under the AC which was nice because it was so hot but it was so dirty covered in spider poop. I even got a few spider bits.
- Esben (10/5): - The old building with Japanese garden is seriously awesome. Everything else was great as well!
- John (10/5): Good - Everything they provide for travellers were very nice. I recommend to someone to choose it.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Good location but thin walls - This is a beautiful old building turned hostel, the staff is friendly, WiFi good, things are clean. Strict no check in before 3 but that was fine. Only problem is that the walls are so thin I was hearing several people snore from other rooms. A perfect location to explore Nara, though!
- Rena (10/5): - Great experience to stay in a japanese style house. Staff has given detailed orientation when i arrived the hostel.
- onkar (10/5): Worth to stay !! very close to temples - It was really good experience to stay in Japanese style hotel.
staff is really good and helpful .
- Mai (8/5): Would come again :) - First time staying at a backpacking place, and it was definitely worth it.
I booked this place for two people, which worked out nice because my brother and I ended up getting our own room. It is not the cleanest or nicest place to stay, but it was still very decent and well worth the money. The biggest plus is that the staff is super friendly and it is in a perfect location (about a 5-10 minute walk from a lot of good restaurants, the main sightseeing attractions, and a main bus route that looped around the city to the two train stations).
- KK (10/5): Very comfortable and convenient - This old house is very beautiful located in a very good location, only 8 minute walk to the Nara park. The stuff is amazing, lovely and super helpful.
- Rozita (10/5): Great atmospheric hostel - Conveniently located, walking distance to main Nara sites at the park and train station. We had a private room in a traditional courtyard house, on tatami floors. Staff are very friendly. Definitely a backpackers hostel. But all facilities were clean and staff and people very friendly. Highly recommend if thinking about staying in Nara.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Brilliant - Amazing guesthouse. Enjoyed my stay immensely
- Edwin (6/5): Experience true traditional Japanese Guesthouse - I stayed in a small private room with a shared bathroom. The guesthouse used to be a tea school I think, and is nearly 100 years old. It was a nice experience staying in such a old guesthouse but it also means that there are a lot of modern facilities missing.
Heat in the room is provided by a small electrical heater which plays a melody after 3 hours, and you need to hit a button if you want to continue the heat. An electrical blanket is also provided.
The guesthouse is very intwined with nature, which means that there's no heat all the way to the bathroom. No heat in the toilets as well, but there is hot water for your shower.
The staff were very very nice, but they are pretty strict about only checking in from 3pm onwards although you can leave your luggage behind. I reached around 2.40pm and was not allowed to even sit around in the common area.
The guesthouse was very close to Todaiji on the map which was the main reason why I chose this guesthouse, but in fact you do need to make a huge detour to enter Todaiji from the main entrance.
Overall, this was a very nice stay mainly because of the hospitality and friendliness of the staff. For the price I paid, I did expect a bit more comfort so maybe it might be best to stay in the dorms if you choose to stay with this guesthouse.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Amazing guesthouse - This guesthouse was by car the most unique place I stayed while in Japan.
- Yuri (10/5): Friendly environment - This is a 90 years old traditional house, yet keeping in very good condition. Clean and tidy. There's a Japanese style garden in the middle, we can view the garden from the room, it's beautiful. Good experience.
- ali (8/5): really good value for money - really comfortable and management was really helpful
- amit (10/5): Great great place, yet very cheap.. - Gives the feeling of a true old japanese house, which is usually kinda expensive, but it was really cheap! I definitely go to there again if I visit Nara
