• Sue (7/5): Love being close to the beach. - The location was excellent, with ocean views right out the door. We liked being in a non-chain motel, and appreciated the homey touches. Staff was friendly and responsive. The facility is aging, and even though everything worked fine, it is showing its age. I wished that the railing on the balcony did not block the view of the surf: needed either higher chairs or lower chairs or a thinner railing.

• Dennis (4/5): Enjoyed listening to the ocean didn’t like the tiny bathroom. - The location is the only reason we selected this motel. It does have a very nice view of the ocean and access to the beach. The bathroom and especially the tiny shower are incredibly small. It is a rather old, dated, beach motel. It needs air conditioning, it was an unusually hot day and the room just wouldn’t cool off with the full sun hitting it.
• Paula (10/5): It felt like home at the Sunset Surf Motel, and I can’t wait to return! - The room was so thoughtfully laid out with everything that you needed! And very cozy. The staff were extremely warm and kind. They went so far above and beyond to make sure you enjoyed your stay. :-) The hotel is located right across a non-busy road to the beach and the ocean! They’ve provided picnic benches and chairs for people to watch the sunset and enjoy the beach from the property. Nothing. It was perfect. Can’t wait to go back.

• kelly (8/5): Labor day in manzanita. - Location was great. Room was nice. Very clean. I would stay there again. Upstairs neighbors. Floors not sound dampened. I understand it is old and many new practices are used for this now that weren't available when hotel was built. Neighbors sounded like a herd of elephants most of the night. I know it was labor day weekend but $250 per night seems excessive. I also know I agreed to pay that in advance but it seems like a lot

• sam (5/5): Disappointing. The wi-fi issue caused a lot of inconvenience and left a bad taste. - The location is perfect, right opposite the beach. Sea view was lovely. The wi-fi. It didn't work (in our building, can't speak for elsewhere), and after reading other reviews it's clearly an ongoing problem. They seem to have an outdated system that I'm guessing they don't want to pay to update. I felt like the staff were quite defensive and disingenuous when we reported this. First of all they took the line that "it must be an issue with our devices / no one else has reported this issue". This clearly wasn't true as we were approached by multiple other residents who were all having the same issue. Then they started saying that "it was an issue in the area", but again clearly not true as all other businesses in town that we visited had working wi-fi (They even advised us to go to the local library to use their wi-fi!). Finally their line changed to "we're liaising with the owner of the building to fix the issue". Ultimately, in this day and age it's totally unacceptable not to have working wi-fi, especially when you are charging wildly over priced rates for rooms that on closer inspection are quite tired and pretty basic - way more so than they appear in the photos....The heated pool was nice though.

Gas fireplace was a great surprise and cozy on cool mornings. Our goddaughter loved the pool too! I lowered the rating from 10 to 9 because the WiFi was terrible.

• Guest (8/5): Different than our expectations but enjoyable. - The photo on the website is of the main hotel facing the beach where we we expected our room to be on the second floor. When we checked in we discovered our room was going to be in a totally different building - a second older building on the ground floor right on the corner the Ocean and Laneda - the main corner to the beach and downtown Manzanita. To have our curtains open was to have a constant parade of people walking by to the beach and town. The room was well equipped and comfortable but not what we expected or preferred!

Good TV selection as far as channels. Furniture and art need a serious refresh❤️I stayed here before many years ago, with my BF and we had so much fun!! Furniture was the same in 2008!😬 loved the view so very much! Loved having a fireplace in my room as well and a two burner stove and a microwave! Nothing is bad, my room had a gorgeous view!!! Just needs interior refresh!

The head was on a pole that was supposed to let you adjust the height but it didn't work. Disappointing & inconvenient after being on a windy, sandy beach. Also, it was noisy at around 2 am from people partying in one of tge rooms & woke me up. Finally, no privacy on ground floor. Always had to keep heavy curtains closed & the lighting inside is dreary.

Wifi was terrible and the TV did not work . It was good though kids and I were outside enjoying day together without having to be in a device!!
• spaz7 (8/5): Great birthday week at the beach - The heated pool was the hit of our stay! Our room was a close second. Friendly and helpful staff answered all our questions and were available when we needed them. The room was clean and welcoming. This is going to sound silly, but the bathroom floor was clean! Many places do a simple mop and leave your bare feet dirty. Not the case here, and we were impressed. At night, our room got too warm. You could only open the back window and the front door to get a cross breeze and while we did this during the day, it didn't feel comfortable for us to leave the window or the door fully open at night. Next time, we will be prepared and bring a fan or something to help keep it cooler in the room at night.
• Alyce (8/5): If you overlooked the things that weren’t good, the comfort and location made it a pleasant stay. Would consider coming - Location right at the beach and very near restaurants. The beds were comfy, the fireplace is nice. Patio door to the beach and street was nicer than using the door to the parking lot. While much about the rooms was nice, there were things that made it feel old and not worth $300 a night. Specifically the doors and door frames were chipped and not well painted. Some door handles very dated. The outlets and light switches need to be replaced. The sofa and table and chairs were worn.

Kids loved the pool, which was an outdoor heated one with a wind break around it. Entry door was a sliding glass door with a tricky locking mechanism, shower head was in need of replacement as it sprayed water on the ceiling and had a pretty serious whine to it while in use (sorry, upstairs neighbors!)

The room was large and we really appreciated having a separate bedroom for our group of 2 couples. The pool was heated also. Did I mention the view! Would definitely stay again. The balconies and therefore the rooms had zero privacy if the drapes were open so you could see the ocean view. The door lock was hard to use. The freezer didn't work. The wi-fi didn't work. The corner building 1/2 block away is the only place that I could recommend.

• Madden (8/5): Everything we needed in an excellent location - The ocean was right across the street from our room, so we had a fabulous, sweeping view from our second-story room. Really enjoyed having an easy-to-use gas (propane?) fireplace in the room too. Although the room was simple, it had everything we needed including a nice little well-equipped kitchenette. Parking was free and easy to find, and the staff members were friendly and helpful. The bathroom was probably last remodeled in the 1980s. But it was sparkling clean with plenty of counterspace, so I guess if it ain't broke don't fix it.

• Laura (8/5): Lovely stay with a great location walkable to everything in Manzanita. - Location was great. Right on the water for easy beach access. Overall, it was quiet but not really a romantic place. It worked for us. Loved the fireplace as it got chilly. The facility is a bit older and dated. It was what we expected so not an issue. If you are looking for new shiny appliances and bathroom, this isn't your place.

Would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a nice place next to the beach. Our view was spectacular! We loved the fireplace to take the chill out of the room at night. The stairs might be a problem for older folks with mobility issues as there isn’t an elevator but they also have ground floor suites too!

• Kathy (5/5): Great location just ok room - The view was really the best part. We could see and hear the ocean all night. The place is old and tired and needs some TLC. The desk clerk did a very poor job directing us to our room. It was in a separate building and parking was behind it around the corner. She said it was a brown building but it was definitely grey. Took us a while to find it because the way we drove from the office had no signage. It wasn't until we turned around to go back to the office to figure out where we were supposed to go that we saw the only signs.
• Aimee (9/5): - Overall, the size of the rooms, the helpfulness of the office staff and the abundance of amenities as part of the kitchenette in our room met all of our needs. Being directly across from the beach and having patio seating that had direct views across the beach in front of the room is the true highlight of this motel. It is really a location, location, location, situation. The rooms were not cleaned daily unless a special request was made. Even small things like emptying the garbages was not done during our 4 night stay. The room had a kitchenette, so we created enough garbage, that I ended up emptying myself on more than one day. It would have been nice to have at least a very basic room cleaning each day.

• Jeff (6/5): We came for the beach and that is what we got. - Beautiful view from the balcony. Location was great as it was directly across the street from the beach access. Perfect spot to watch the surf and people. The room smelled musty. They should replace the carpet with hard flooring.
• Jan (5/5): - Loved the ocean view. Staff was nice. We came for a memorial. It was fine for that purpose because we were hardly there. $200 for this unit is overpriced. Nice view yes but dark inside, bedding was sort of old and funky. Bed was worn out and uncomfortable. Not enough blankets. The woman I shared with was very cold and there were no extra blankets to cover her up. Noisy because people under us took showers at 11pm. Too late because we could hear everything. Tear down the motel and build something spectacular. This is more like a $150 a night motel.

• Lynne (8/5): Great location and good place to stay for a few days. - On the ocean. Wonderful views. Close to restaurants and shops. Spacious rooms (except the bath) and nice kitchenette. The bathroom was really small. The shower was claustrophobic. We didn't have a good supply of hot water.
• JuliAnnTulberg (9/5): Beachfront hotel with big rooms - This hotel is literally as close to the beach as you can get in Manzanita. The rooms were very well equipped with little kitchenettes and were spacious and quiet. Everything was comfortable and there's a whole bunch of parking right on the beach-access road that the hotel sits on. The hotel is slightly dated and unfortunately the wifi was out during our stay. Note: We mentioned it to the staff and they said they were working to fix it.
