Guest Reviews
- David (8/5): Cute uncomfortable - Location was good. Parking was good. Room was interesting in eclectic. Cook at a next-door restaurant for breakfast was grumpy and only did the bare minimum. Other than a breakfast croissant, nothing else was offered.
- Fayre-Ella (10/5): -
- Rebekah (10/5): - It was private, quiet and the breakfast service was amazing. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean.
- Brian (10/5): - John who I assume is the owner of the hotel was extremely friendly and professional. The morning chef was extremely nice and the food he prepared was delicious. Also the ambience of the hotel was beyond beautiful . Hidden gem in San diego. Would stay again!!!!
- Kent (9/5): - Room was wonderful with hot tub and fireplace. Great view. Top floor. Cozy! Breakfast was delicious.
- Elena (9/5): -
- jared (9/5): - breakfast was good and nice. will come back.
- LENA (10/5): -
- johnny (8/5): meh, it was okay. - It felt cozy The bed sheets were dirty and the room was really small. There was nowhere to get ice. The stairs were SOOOOO slippery
- Alicia (10/5): -
- Vladimir (7/5): -
- Sim (2/5): - The location The air conditioner is very loud. The whole room condition is very poor, everything is very dated, floor is dirty, only one soap dispenser has some soap in it.
- Verified traveler (4/5): It is not what the pictures show - We stayed at this place during memorial day weekend for four nights, paid avg 259/night about 1200 total.
First the good, the property is located at a higly walkable area with restaurants, parks, shops etc. One of the few places that had free parking and breakfast included.
The bad, the rooms have eclectic decoration style, however the layout is very inconvenient for a multi night stay. The bathtub is inside the bedroom with a shower curtain separating the sleeping area and the shower.
The ugly, the hotel did put any effort in cleaning the room before we reached the property. The bathtub and the sink had moldy stains, the entey way had spiders and cobwebs, the balcony was dusty withe dried leaves piled up. The worst of all the balcony curtains had red stains and moldy smell. The hotel didn't have onsite reception, we called housekeeping the next day after check-in for fresh curtains and bedsheets.
Though we loved delmar we will opt for other places to stay next time for the rent we paid.
- Sarah (9/5): Great place to stay in Del Mar - highly recommend! - Very unique, comfortable room, delicious breakfast!
- Robert (9/5): Superb -
- Diane (10/5): Exceptional - I enjoyed the decor and landscape
Good breakfast
- Ian (8/5): Very good -
- Mike (9/5): Superb -
- Thomas (7/5): Great place and location. - Awesome restaurant attached to the rooms. Excellent food and very friendly! Rooms were a little outdated and the bed was too soft. Great place overall. Perfect location.
- Anne (8/5): World travelers would love this place. - Location I would have liked the history about the place
- Bent (8/5): Very good -
- Heather (10/5): Exceptional - Ambiance, accommodation, fireplace, hot tub Floor was a bit dirty
- Elizabeth (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nicola (10/5): - A unique and most quaint little Inn. Only four rooms nestled in a courtyard behind the equally quaint Peruvian Restaurant. Small but cozy. Breakfast was provided by the restuarant, the most delicious choices of eggs or empanadas. Friendly and welcoming owners. Highly recommend.
- Max (6/5): A very quirky and unique place to stay. Felt like a fusion between an Airbnb and Hotel. Not many amenities, but a great - Great design, unique architecture, beautiful inner courtyard with plants and a pond, eccentric decorations in the room. Awesome breakfast cooked by the restaurant staff of the attached restaurant. Bed was very comfortable and the balcony was a nice touch. The most unique room I’ve stayed in. Room was very clean. Free parking in the back. Barely any hotel staff. Facilities felt like an afterthought. Not a great value for the price. Essentially rooms behind a restaurant with a unique center courtyard. Toilet broke while we stayed there, so I had to open the top and open the valve manually to flush. Essentially no front desk staff on hand to call for this as far as I could tell unless I wanted to walk back over to their sister hotel. Check in was not clear, ended up talking with the restaurant staff to figure out it was down the road at the sister hotel. Walking through the front into the hotel felt awkward, and the entrance in the back is certainly low key and unassuming.
- David (8/5): - Overall it was a nice stay, but the floors and some of the surfaces in the room were a little bit dusty/not the cleanest. Really nice look to the room though and you get your own patio! Jetted bathtub was nice and the area around the hotel is cool too. The Peruvian restaurant is super good as well.
- Allan (10/5): Secret Garden Hotel is a must stay. - Beautiful service and clean. Patricia was wonderful/
We loved our stay.
- Dennis (6/5): Quirky - A quirky and unique hotel with some very good features, including location, but not clean enough.
While there, a neghboring apartment complex was being roofed. Noise fro 7am to 5pm.
- Joanne (6/5): - The room was in need of maintenance. Roofers were working the entire 3 days stay outside our 3 rooms. The jacuzzi in the suite above us went on each night at 10:30 or 11 pm when we desperately needed sleep. There was no one to call and ask for help then. In the morning, there was no creamer for coffee- except powdered cream. I called but none arrived for 4 hours.
The Peruvian restaurant food was delicious in the restaurant that was in the building. We loved the breakfast. The hotel should have cost a lot less and had better service. Roofers working outside all day warranted a large discount and a warning. Too bad for us!
- Trisha (8/5): Nice place to enjoy a weekend! - The staff were so nice! The room was artsy boho, fun and clean. Lots of restaurants, bars and shops nearby. Breakfast was really good! Free covered parking was an unexpected perk. Fixtures on the tub/shower were dated, but it didn’t bring is down.
- Mark (6/5): - Great location in village...room was a little funky...don't think I could handle multiple nights there!
- Anderson (8/5): Very good -
- Michael (10/5): - Cute, quiet little place, tucked away. Room was homey, did not feel like a hotel. Staff were great, very friendly.
- James (8/5): Very good - It was an eclectic experience. It's truly a charming place. Deferred maintenance to the courtyard
- Erik (7/5): Good - Great breakfast included. Taxes included, no "resort fee" scams, no parking fee scams Too many stairs.
- Barbara (8/5): Quirky, Clean and comfortable place to stay in Del Mar - Very quirky, quiet and convenient Room was pretty small, and no ice for my water
- Lyle (9/5): A beautiful experience - The included breakfast, the atmosphere, and the hospitality! TV remotes were dirty, some items in the room were dusty. However all things that needed to be clean definitely were!
- Susan (9/5): Superb -
- Shannon (9/5): Superb -
- Kevin (10/5): - Cute and eclectic. Perfect location. Delicious breakfast.
- Leatherneck79 (1/5): Bad - None NOT CLEAN!!! Staff UNPROFESSIONAL, CANNOT COMMUNICATE, NOR PROVIDING USEFUL INFO. ROOM NOT CLEAN,
- Ann (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andreas (3/5): Disappointing - Nothing Poor value for the dollar
Dated everything
Advertising did not match room or location
- Clinton (6/5): Pleasant - Nice room comfortable bed This is not a hotel it's a room in the back of a restaurant. The room itself is nice enough but you must get the key somewhere else and have them take you because you would never find it. Also upstairs so be prepared to haul your luggage.
- Thiruppathy (9/5): Superb -
- Heather (10/5): Exceptional - Had a relaxing stay. Staff was great. The breakfast, spinach, bacon omelette. Great!
- Dawn (10/5): Exceptional -
- Darren (10/5): - Funky and perfect
- Anthony (10/5): The perfect spot - Great location.
- Dani (9/5): Superb -
- Thomas (8/5): - There are just a few issues that if resolved could make this better. 1. The coffee bar was not stocked all the time. Breakfast was good but it would have been nice to have a cup of juice or mike with the meal. 2. The Microwave was broken. 3. One day we had no hot water. It was fixed not sure why it was a problem. All in all we had a good stay just need some finishing touches.
- William (10/5): Would stay there again! - This is a cozy little hideaway that I thoroughly enjoyed staying at. Location is excellent. And the included breakfast comes from an amazing little Peruvian restaurant. I would stay there again.
- Mcdonald (8/5): Very happy with the whole experience. - Check in was earlier than expected and the staff were great. Breakfast was great. Room was comfortable and many clean towels. Overall it was a very pleasant stay. Air conditioner is a little noisy.
- Olesya (8/5): Very good - Breakfast was nice and freshly made, we had omlette and egg sandwich, pretty nice. Nice beach walks around the hotel
- Arianne (7/5): Good -
- Gary (6/5): Funky little place - Breakfast was a treat at the connected sidewalk restaurant Common property could use a good cleaning
- Vladimir (6/5): Pleasant -
- Pawel (4/5): - Place has lot's of potential but seems neglected
- Beatriz (10/5): Exceptional -
- Shannen (10/5): - This place is a little hidden gem! You check in at their sister property, Les Artists Inn, and they show you the way to this property approximately 2 blocks away. It only has 4 rooms total. The vibe is a very Bali/zen type of decor. It is attached to a wonderful Peruvian restaurant where you get your FREE breakfast. Their empanadas are to die for! Don't forget to tip your chef!! He will take care of you! This place is in the heart of del mar within walking distance to all restaurants, shops, and the beach. We will definitely stay here again!!
- Cybill (10/5): - this was the cutest little gem in downtown Del Mar, but I didn't feel like I was in the middle of downtown.
- Cristina (8/5): Very good -
- David (8/5): Great choice - The room was very nice. Rustic room that was very comfortable. Great value for the area and close to the beach.
- Jan (7/5): It was like being in a quaint Spanish casitas, warm & cozy. - The breakfast in the morning was yum. The staff were extremely nice & so helpful. A shower bar in the bathtub/shower. It was extremely slippery taking a shower.
- Alan (10/5): Great - Great breakfast included with room. The manager, Tanna was very helpful. This boutique hotel with only four rooms has a very cozy, quiet and relaxing vibe. Would stay again. No soap in bathroom.
- Ann (8/5): Very good - breakfast was very good. The place is funky and we liked it but as it is not like a standard hotel some people may not care for it. We enjoy unique places. There is a family room above which has the potential for being noisy depending on who is using it. Footsteps etc. can be heard.
- Ludy (6/5): nice but not for the price . - The host was amazing . The decor was beautiful. it was not clean . To many spiders in our room . it was dusty the pillows and blankets smelled . when you check in it’s at another place and the mans office was very dirty even had roach spray cans . the building is beautiful but not clean . to many spider webs . The restaurant amazing food.
- Gene (10/5): - The location was great and the unique way that the grounds and room were decorated added to the enjoyment of the stay. Natana, who was our personal contact person if we needed anything was awesome.
- Vladimir (8/5): Very good -
- Natalia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Pat (9/5): nice 24 hour getaway - unusual hotel very trendy. nice small porch with ocean view. covered parking. great breakfast at the restaurant and other great restaurants within walking distance no light in the bathroom!
- Bernard (9/5): Superb -
- James (8/5): Very good -
- Dennis (10/5): - This hideaway is a gem. This place is beautiful, clean, quaint, and comfortable. There’s a balcony with a view of the ocean. Has a small tub/jacuzzi in the room. A coffee station is just outside the room. Secure parking is very close to the room. You won’t be disappointed.
- Katie (6/5): Pleasant -
- Bulent (10/5): Exceptional - everything was fantastic.
- Breahna (10/5): Room and location exceeded expectations - Quaint room with plenty of space and comfortable living arrangements. Free breakfast included with our room purchase. Everything was wonderful. Nothing unfavorable comes to mind.
- Lisa (10/5): This place is so unique. We loved the artistic vision. - Breakfast from the Peruvian restaurant in the hotel provided a lovely breakfast. The food was amazing. An outside hose for washing feet after the beach.
- Nikki (10/5): - Charming and unique and a great deal!
- Julie (9/5): Loved it! <3 - The Secret Garden Inn is a wonderful hidden gem! Not only was our room clean, comfortable, and fragrant (I loved the faint whiffs of incense), but the funky and eclectic environment provided was an absolute delight. Definitely a welcome change from the uniform, stead look of a hotel room.
All the staff we interacted with were extremely helpful both in person and over the phone. The young woman who checked us in and escorted us to our room was so warm and hospitable with great energy.
The breakfast is delicious! But have your order ready to go (the menu is provided in your room), as the restaurant didn't have a copy readily available when we popped in.
- Anonymous (8/5): Very good -
- Nate (9/5): love the place will be returning! - the place was great the view was spectacular.
- Isobel (10/5): A quiet hotel - The room in which I stayed was beautifully decorated with Knick nacks . The bed was extremely comfortable. Despite what other reviews said about this hotel being noisy, I found the Secret Garden Inn quiet. The breakfast included was delicious . I would definitely stay at The Secret Garden Inn again .
- Palmer (8/5): so very comfortable. location is perfect. loved it. - Quaint, unique and comfortable. out of coffee.
no ice available.
- Uzi (8/5): Very good -
- M (10/5): Exceptional - The calm Semi difficult to find
- Nicole (10/5): loved it! we will be back! - it felt very secluded & private. Truly felt like a getaway. Parking wasn’t the best but definitely not a reason to go elsewhere.
- Kristine (10/5): - So cute, bohemian. The breakfast was excellent, convenient coffee maker, the jacuzzi tub drain stopper did not work, so we could not use it other than to shower, the manager is kind of rude, but the owner is sweet and a very talented architect and designer. Will stay at this one or Les Artiste - owned by same owner - again.
- lisa (4/5): - WE loved the place when we arrived but when we went to bed I woke to bites on my legs...maybe fleas??? We also noticed that the sheets were full of sand and crumbs. Spoke to the manager and he said that clean sheets were placed but he has been very short on staff for the cleaning. This is not what I expected and we are very disappointed.
- yasamin (8/5): - The property is super cute. We loved that we could walk to grab a coffee then walk over to the beach. It was a unique and comfortable stay.
The only downside to the property was the noise from the upstairs room. It gets extremely loud. We were not able to fall asleep and if we did, the noise would wake us up. Just hope the upstairs isn't rented out during your stay!
- Kenneth (10/5): A Fun, Unique, and Relaxing Place in Del Mar - This is a fun and funky place for a few days when in Del Mar. The location is great, near shopping and dining and only a five minute walk to the ocean. Our room, the Lotus room had a partial view of the water. Our innkeeper, John, was very friendly and helpful. Included is a great, made-to-order breakfast, provided by the attached Peruvian Cafe. Choose from about half a dozen delicious options. The croissant sandwich was so tasty that I had it both mornings. The room was not overly large but had everything we needed. It reminded us of some laid-back places we have stayed in the Caribbean. There are only four rooms so it doesn’t feel like a big corporate hotel. The Secret Garden Inn has a sister property in the next block, Les Artistes Inn, and it looks equally unique and fun. We would recommend it and would return if our travels take us to the Del Mar area.
- Kelby (10/5): - The property is quiet, quaint, within walking distance to the stores, beaches and restaurants. The property is clean and eclectic.
- Sara (4/5): - Property was not as advertised. First staff member was extremely RUDE, second staff member was beyond helpful & kind young woman name started with a N (sorry can’t remember). Floor in room was filthy dirty, toilet was in a closet like room, shower ran out of hot water, there was no one on staff at the location so you have to walk two blocks to another location for assistance. Rooms are in back of a restaurant that has tables in the courtyard in front of your room. Very loud and smells like food all hours of the night. The kitchen is outdoors where you share a mini fridge, coffee pot, and ice cube trays that you fill yourself. Parking is very tight and has trash bins from restaurant lined up in front of your car.
- James (8/5): - The room and location were very tranquil. Loved the balcony and closeness (6 min walking distance) to many fine restaurants as well as more casual ones located even closer.
- david (8/5): - Rooms are beautifully designed but very small.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great location and overall nice stay
- Patrick (10/5): - We had a wonderful stay. The staff was very friendly, and the room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast on the balcony with a view of the ocean in the morning was great. I'm looking forward to my next stay there
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The property is unique, it has many plants and it has charm. The room was clean with a nice partial ocean view. The hotel is in a very quiet street and overall excellent place to stay!
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Filthy. The ceiling fan is covered in dirt about 1/4 in. thick. There are spider webs everywhere and there were ants in the bed. Apparently no one cleans behind the sink either, really gross. The tub had gross build up in the jets, so no bath.
The noise from the restaurant was really bad. The breakfast doesn’t open until 8am (if they are on time) and there are very few choices from an unfriendly person. It was not good. Your only amenity is the breakfast, the spa is for the suite only. And the noise from the suite was unbearable. Sounded like they were constantly moving furniture around, but it was probably just thin walls.
Don’t plan on a good partial view of the ocean either.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great spot! Good vibes!
