- Randolph (8/5): - Glad I chose to stay here. My room was spacious, cool, and very comfortable. The noise from the street is significant but thankfully it’s quiet at night. The ambiance is unique. The staff is genuinely kind. But they need to break out the paint brushes because some surfaces, especially in the bathrooms, are pretty funky. I’ve stayed at campgrounds and hostels with nicer, hotter, showers :)
- Jillian (10/5): - Incredibly unique property that used to be an old herb shop now tastefully refurbished into a boutique hotel. They kept all the old stuff from years past on display, and while it had modern amenities it still maintained that old charm. Highly recommend!
- Clara (10/5): Historic hotel oozing with charm and character - We absolutely loved our stay here. At first we weren't sure if we were entering the lobby or an antique shop but once we were inside we were greeted warmly, our suitcase was whisked upstairs using an ingenious rope pulley, and we were immediately immersed in a place where every single piece of decor was clearly carefully considered to fit within the antique style. Despite the old school surrounds, there were modern comforts like air conditioning, and every part of the hotel was also spotlessly clean (while retaining character). We stayed in a family room with our 2 kids aged 7 & 9, and there was plenty of room for the whole family. We had our own room with a door, while the kids had two single beds in the wider area. I especially appreciated their efforts to reduce their environmental impact by serving filtered water in glasses, even their bins were lined with old newspaper instead of plastic bags. If you stay here, make sure you have at least one lunch or dinner at the cafe downstairs, it was so delicious and packed with local flavours. Their breakfast selection was also surprisingly wide and super tasty, including nonya desserts and roti which my son loved. Location couldn't be better, you're a short walk from all of Georgetown's attractions. Overall I think we enjoyed our stay here more than our beach resort. If you see this hotel has availability, I urge you to book immediately, it's a real gem.

- John (10/5): Historic inn in Little India - Loved this hotel. It's an old historic building impeccably and sensitively remade as lodging, with the character lovingly preserved. Delightful, interesting breakfasts. Good bathroom. Great staff, very helpful. We also had the best meal of our Georgetown stay in their cafe, and that's saying something. Located in the most vibrant section of town, with all the color and flavors of India right outside your door. We had a wifi router right in our room, and good AC as well as a ceiling fan. Perfect for anyone who loves history and doesn't mind climbing steep wooden stairs.

- Andrew (10/5): Historic preservation, Fun space, Great Service! - Spent a few days in Penang on the way to a conference in KL. I loved my short escape at Ren i Tang. Loved the historic preservation, and how they created such cool rooms like loft spaces. It made our stay a fantastic escape. Breakfast there was among the best meals of our entire trip, including the omelettes and noodle dishes. Eating in the courtyard was just so refreshing with the fresh air. The location in Little India (UNESCO Historic Preservation zone) was fantastic and made night walks just perfect. I can't say enough good things about the pleasant staff who shared many tips on places to eat, shop, and explore. It was like a resort on many ways, but with a more homey feel. I hope to return someday.

- Margaret (10/5): Great location & charming - Ren i Tang is a good choice for a stay in Penang for a few reasons: The old heritage building is comfortably renovated while keeping its original character. It’s located right in the heart of Little India, a colourful and vibey area - within walking distance of anywhere in the old city. There are tons of great places to eat nearby. (We loved the little hawker center across the road for koppi and char koay teow). Our room (Loft #17) was quiet with a pleasant rooftop view. The wifi is good and they offer free water (and a simple breakfast) and do their bit to reduce plastic waste. Altogether, we really enjoyed Penang.

WiFi, inhouse phone, shower had good pressure, toilet flushed well, AC cooling worked well due to glass windows doubled with antique wood slatted shutters. Street noise level was minimal. Bistro Tang serves excellent western snacks - a nice change esp. the calamansi lime smoothie. Also Malaysian dishes. Excellent location within heritage district, walking distance to ferry, 5-star hotels, restaurants + typical Malaysian "kopi tiams" (local coffee shops), temples, mosques, St George's Cathedral + other historical buildings.
- ROBERT (10/5): Experience in style Penang's Little India - If you want to experience the "local color" of Penang along with its culture, food and history, then this is the place for you. Owners have converted and renovated an old Chinese medical hall into a lovely hotel that preserves the character of the old building. Staff was great. The breakfasts were wonderful -- mix of Western and Asian foods. My wife and I felt a part of Little India for the time we were there.

I enjoyed the ambiance and feel of the building, the staff was great and the amenities were great. Having the low key restaurant downstairs is a huge bonus. - Hannah (10/5): This place is amazing, book it now! - Everything about this place is amazing, such a great relaxed, homely feeling atmosphere! All the staff are so lovely and helpful, offering tips for where to eat and visit and are so good to chat to. The building has been so beautifully restored while still holding onto its original history, with beautiful old furniture and a little museum with items from when it was a Chinese medical hall wholesaler. Clean, comfortable bed, great shower. The complimentary breakfast at the in-house cafe/restaurant on the ground floor was really good, each day we got to try a different traditional meal. We also had drinks, lunch and dinner there several times and everything was so good! And there is a lovely courtyard off the cafe too. Free filtered water and very environmentally conscious, which is amazing! The location was perfect for exploring Georgetown. This is a must stay when in Penang! The Heritage on a Plate tour was a highlight too! Would love to stay again one day!

The hotel is in a great location in Little India, lots of restaurants and shops. It also has a cafe attached which does great food including a complementary breakfast which was excellent. We travelled all around Malaysia for 3 weeks and this was our favourite hotel of the whole trip.

The relaxed vibe and heritage restoration is suberb. The rooms are so tasteful and authentic with gorgeous contemporary industrial style bathrooms, french doors and wooden shutters. Breakfast options are excellent. Staff are always ready to please and help arrange taxis etc. During my stay I was very sick and staff were very caring and helped me access the doctor's clinic and pharmacy. I also stayed at the Blue Mansion and Seven Terraces but if back in Penang again I'd definitely be staying at the Ren I Tang.

Across the street is a street restaurant that starts cooking at 05:45. We had fun watching them and the scooters that would cruise past for take out. The other corner was another restaurant that made great naan bread, and all kinds of Indian dishes. Stayed open later than we could stay awake. Great WiFi and breakfast. International guests all not looking for a boring hotel. Highly recommend.

Breakfast is spot on with a different plate everyday coming from one of the street food stalls nearby. The hotel and restaurant seem to be ran by women....may be this explains how good and efficient this place is

The beds are comfortable and the air conditioning a welcome greeting after hot days in Penang...

- Ben (10/5): Beautiful restored traditional guesthouse - An excellent choice in the middle of Georgetown's Little India. It is located at the corner of Lebuh China and Lebuh Penang. Breakfast is included, but there are so many good options nearby including: Sri Weld close to the pier. The cafe is open during the day, but again, so many other options nearby. Hawkers on Jl. Chulia are 10 minutes walk, and Jl. Kimberley is 15 minutes. The room is not large, but perfect for 2 people. The beds were very comfortable with 2 pillows each. The washroom was also very large with nice soaps/shampoo. Overall a very pleasant stay with nice helpful staff.

- Karen (10/5): Charming boutique hotel - What a gem in the heart of little India in the historic district of GeorgeTown. The entire building has been beautifully restored and decorated. Like most hotels in the historic district there is no elevator, but there is a pulley system at the step brings up your bags to the higher level. The bistro in the hotel serves a delicious breakfast which is complementary. One of the strongest assets besides the location which is central to everything is the fabulous staff here at the hotel. Everyone was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable about Penang. A special shout out to Uma, who greeted us and was incredibly helpful throughout our stay. Our four nights here was definitely a highlight of our time in Malaysia.

- Verified traveler (8/5): Step back in time. Cozy! - Good location in little India, walking distance to many attractions in George Town. Retains a lot of the original structure adding modern facilities for a cozy stay. Loft units have an additional flight of stairs in the room! Be aware that lifts are not available, so it may not be suitable if you cannot take stairs. No worries on luggages as they can use a manual pulley system to send them up/down. Breakfast starts 8.30am and last order for dinner is 9.30pm.

But location is still ideal as it is walkable to street art and many good food! Good choice for those looking for an unique stay as room and bed is comfortable despite the nostalgic look and feel
- Jenny (10/5): Unique, central, spotless! - The Ren I Tang completely delivered on providing a very unique accommodation setting in an old Chinese Medical Hall. Located centrally to heaps of Georgetowns little streets and attractions it was relaxed welcoming and homely. The staff were friendly and always on hand. We used the cafe as a base to return to throughout the day for rests and cool drinks. Our room was spotless and charachter filled. I was travelling with my elderly father and they were so kind and caring to him - he loved it as much as I did! I would most definately stay here again and recommend to others. 10/10

- Verified traveler (6/5): Excellent location - close to everything in town - The hotel staircase is something you need to look out for. Be very careful. Other than that, the stay was very pleasant & the hotel staff are really friendly and always ready to help.
- Han (10/5): A modern lodge with a warm personality - Very friendly, helpful and unobtrusive staff who gave great assistance with directions and good eats. It's nice and calm during morning breakfast (the bistro is closed) which consists of a modest selection (toast, cereal, fruit, coffee, tea, juice) supplemented with delicious street food. My ensuite loft was clean, comfortable and more than adequate. With a fan in the high-ceilinged room, there's the option of keeping the huge window open to let in the light and take in the view of the blue skies and rooftops. The AC and wi-fi works very well, too! You'll get pretty sunsets just before setting out for dinner. Important to note that stairs are steep and pretty well-varnished, so hang on to the banisters going up or down, especially if wearing socks. My room did not have a fridge but that's okay, similarly the TV is on the lower floor (I seldom watched any program). The sofa/ daybed on the lower floor was comfy and a great addition. The place is well-maintained without being sterile. Uber drivers have no difficulty finding it though traffic can end up moving slowly during the day due to the narrow, congested streets... but no worries, nobody's in a hurry. Lots of character and just a great place to relax for a unique experience. (High-maintenance and high-strung types won't fit in.)
- Faye (8/5): Very unique hotel in a prime location - It was a fantastic hotel! Living in the restored medicine shop definitely make you feel like back in time. Nostalgic but has a modern feel to it too.
- Ian (10/5): Calm oasis in the heart of Little India - We stayed in the family room on the first floor. The room was clean and comfortable. The only slight negative would be that the two single beds, more suited to children, were situated in the main room, adjacent to the hustle and bustle on the street outside. The traffic noise and Bollywood music didn't die down until 10pm, fine for adults, but difficult to get children to sleep.
- Helen (10/5): Stylish and Central - Enjoyed staying at this hotel, loved the decor and ambience of the old building. Right in the heart of Little India, it gave an authentic feel to our stay in Georgetown. Although busy and bustling out in the street, the hotel exuded a sense of calm and relaxation, beautifully decorated in second-hand, antique and recycled material, it felt very 'homey', which also came from the friendliness of the staff. The staff very helpful in recommending where to eat and what to see around town. Has basic continental breakfast, but were offered a new local dish to try each morning for breakfast,which we did and all teased great. Room was spacious, with great, modern bathroom and shower. No elevator, but still used an old rope and pulley system, to bring suitcases up to the second level, through the atrium in the ceiling.

We booked a duplex room and were really impressed with the comfort and design (we even took pics of the bathroom for ideas when we renovate our own at home). the staff were really helpful in recommending things to see and great places to eat. the WiFi was great, too - one of us had to do a work meeting via Skype on short notice and the speed and sound quality were better than we often get back home.

- Laraine (10/5): Lovely restored building, but staff take the prize - Beautiful renovated old shophouse building, spacious rooms, tasteful decor, clever use of space, plenty of electrical outlets, good wifi in room and all over the hotel, but the biggest plus is the staff... So friendly, knowledgable and accommodating... Nothing too much trouble. There's a nice little cafe / bar attached where they serve a breakfast that will set you up for the day - freshly cooked eggs, plus buffet with cereal, toast. Good central location in the heart of little India, walking distance to many tourist attractions and the weld quay bus terminal for easy access to other locations. The only downside at all is the scarily steep and narrow stairs, but can't really even complain about them because they are the original, so totally in keeping with the renovation work... And the staff raise and lower your luggage on the pulley so no one has to walk the stairs with it! Would definitely recommend and revisit.
- JJ (8/5): Great boutique hotel in the middle of the old town - Ren I Tang was a 124 year old Chinese pharmacy and it was recently turned into a quaint little hotel and restaurant. The staff were excellent and catered to our every need. The rooms were acceptable. Of course it doesn't have the comfort of a Ritz Carlton, but it is packed with history and character. They were also comfortable, just to be clear. I was traveling with my father and we had this little room with a balcony over looking the courtyard. it was great.

- Robert (8/5): Georgetown Gem - Welcoming respite from the heat. Located in Little India, which is great for its food and shopping, but not so good for its noise that can go on late and start again early in the morning. Apart from this only potential downside, the hotel is excellent. Superb large and famous Chinese shophouse, delightfully refurbished. Originally a medical hall, with leftover artifacts kept in a ground floor museum. Did not eat in the bistro, so cannot comment on that. Staff were informative and attentive to detail. Actions were taken in proactive and reactive ways, a good sign of quality. Want a simple, quality, clean and comfortable place to stay in Georgetown? Looking for a place full of character? Try this hotel. You will not be disappointed.

- Christian (10/5): Sanctuary in Georgetown - Ten I Tang is a gem, it fits into the teeming neighborhood but is a sanctuary within. And, the owners could not possibly have been more welcoming, hospitable and informative. Better than any concierge.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great Stay, Great Location, Great Staff - Had a fantastic two day one night escape to Penang, as soon as I arrived I was given a free map with locations to visit depending on what I wanted to do. The staff were incredibly polite, happy and helpful.
- Hor See (10/5): Nice Place - Very nice place. Very clean and very nice service by Karen and team The room is very nice and spacious. Although I stay in the suite that is next to the road, dont find it noisy like what they others commented. It is right in the middle of Little India that you can walk to Peranakan Museum, Chulia Street night market, UNESCO core heritage area, blue mansion and pandan Kota area. Food is plenty. Only downside to little India is it doesnt have so many five foot way shelter and with the heat of Penang, walking out in the day time can be a bit hot. But is interesting place though
- Mark (10/5): Great place to stay in Penang - Housed in an old Chinese medicinal warehouse, the hotel has been lovingly restored and upgraded with modern conveniences whilst keeping the character of the old building as well as a lot of the original furniture. Located in Little India, which wasn't really my cup of tea but walking distance from most attractions in the centre and the hotel is thankfully surrounded by relatively quiet shops so you won't have to listen to Bollywood movie soundtracks that get blared out of some of them. If you're driving, which I think you should if you want to go to sample all of the best food Penang has to offer, then parking wasn't too much of a problem either. Staff are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Would definitely stay here again and glad I picked it over one of the large hotels.
