- Sameer (4/5): - They double charged me for the dinner and charged me ($15) at the time of check-out without providing explanation of charges. The dinner was for $21 but my credit card shows it was charged twice. It was careless of the Africa House Hotel to charge me twice. I tried reaching them but they didn't respond. Please be careful when booking this hotel.

- Apophia (2/5): Cauchemar - Je suis restée une nuit et j'ai réussi à dormir 3 heures. L'hôtel est infesté d'insectes. Il est impossible de fermer l'œil sans se demander si on ne va pas être piqué en pleine nuit. Les chambres sont situées sous le café restaurant qui joue la musique jusqu'à 1 heure du matin. Les chambres équipées de fenêtres qui ne se ferment pas complètement, donnent également côté rue qui est très fréquentée avec un trafic dense de véhicules. J'ai rapporté mes mécontentents au Manager qui m'a dit que l'hôtel appartient à l'état qui ne souhaite pas faire d'importants travaux. Africa House n'est pas hôtel. Par ailleurs, ils pratiquent des prix qui ne sont pas à la hauteur de l'établissement. Aucune personne ne devrait y séjourner.
- P.M. (8/5): Fijn verblijf en servicegericht. - Netjes verzorgd en servicegericht voor de gasten. Bij aankomst op de luchthaven stond de medewerker klaar om ons gratis naar het hotel te brengen. Het ontbijt was goed verzorgd met verse producten.
- Robert (4/5): Det dårligste 4 stjernede hotel - Hotellet er i en elendig stand, de billeder som ligger af hotellet på hotel.com er overhovedet ikke tilsvarende som hotellet ser ud nu. Hele hotellet er meget slidt. Vi kunne ikke få Rene håndklæder med det samme de beskidte var afhentet, da hotellet sagde at de kun havde 1 sæt til hver værelse og vi måtte derfor vente til de var vasket på et vaskeri i nabolaget og hentet. Vi måtte rykke for håndklæderne, da vi var vendt hjem fra stranden sidst på eftermiddagen og skulle have et bad. Vi fik dog kun 2 badehåndklæder og måtte igen bede om 1 til hænderne og 1 til at stå på når vi kom ud fra brusebadet- brusebadet foregik i et badekar som ikke var tæt ved gulvet, så det var vand ud på hele gulvet efter bad. Til morgenmaden var kaffen lunken og det kogende vand var også lunken, dette måtte vi sige flere gange. Møblerne vi sad i på terrassen i restauranten var møg beskidte, hynderne var udover de var beskidte fugtige. Det fælles toilet som ligger på etagen ved restauranten var også beskidt og med vand på gulvet flere steder. Vi boede på et 4 stjernet hotel ved Zanzibar østkyst og i skriver at dette hotel er et 4 stjernet hotel, sammenligner vi disse to hoteller, vil vi give dette hotel en lille 2 stjerner, for havudsigten , men desværre følger der også en masse affald med i den udsigt.
- Adam (8/5): historic colonial building excellent seafront loca - the staff and management are very accomodating, even under challenging circumstances. this is not the ritz carlton or the four seasons, this is a historic colonial building right on the sea front and short walk to everything without being in the overpriced tourist traps like Hyatt. for authentic experience stay in colonial houses like this.

- Paer (6/5): Bad communiction - Dålig kommunikation med med hotellet... Jag mailade om att få en gratis upphämtning på flygplatsen (det ingår). Det tog 1 vecka innan de svarade efter en reminder från min sida. Väl på flygplatsen var det ingen och mötte mig...blev tvungen att ta en vanlig taxi...hotellet gav mig ingen kompensation för det. Dåligt.

- Mette (10/5): Excellent view - nice hotel next to Stone Town. Really nice view from the restaurant where the food was very good. The staff were also very nice and welcoming. The room was a bit dark with not much sun light, but I didn’t stay in there much anyway.

The bar was located above my room which meant loud music until the early house of the morning, followed by staff dragging furniture across the floor to set up for breakfast. Lots of dancing, drunk people, whoo hoo’s - all of which made for an unpleasant experience. 2 nights of very little sleep; I was glad to get out of there.

We kept changing our reservation so many different times, I understand its kinda annoying, if I was in their shoes but they were still nice to us and agreed to change Everytime we phoned them. Come to the day of arrival, it was a happy meeting/feeling. we finally got the chance to meet the manager who we had always communicated with. Furthermore, Superb room with a sea view, restaurant with evening sunset view. breakfast with sea view. Friendly service. Actually, we felt at home the entire stay. - Verified traveler (4/5): - The booing process was smooth. We booked a deluxe room. Upon arrival we were sat down and told the rooms were being renovated, so there was no room available for us. NO EMAIL OR MESSAGE was sent in advance to notify us and we booked way ahead of time. We were offer another hotel, lower class. They took us to see the room, it was dark and smelling of moth balls. There were cockroaches in the lobby. We refused to stay there. After making us wait for a long time we were told that after all the managemnet found us a room. Looked like they overbooked as we got a bigger room than what we paid for. The overall process was very unpleasant, having to fight for what we already paid for and walk over to a different place. The staff was semi pleasant but clearly not happy that we didn't settle. It all smelled a bit fishy, you just had a feeling they were not honest with you. As for the hotel it was decent, but not as nice as described. From the outside on the ocean side it actually looks horribly neglected.The room was clean but smelled a bit, the breakfast was ok. Had to wait a long time. I would not go back to this place. Find something else !

- Verified traveler (2/5): Very disappointing - On arrival I was greeted well at reception and dealt with registration promptly Cases taken up by the porter. I had booked double deluxe but there was nothing deluxe about it.Fairly standard double room.Air con was not working and was not sorted despite telling them. Bathroom was very tired looking and the shower over the bathtub sprayed water into the gap between the bath and the wall leading to a wet floor -dangerous when stepping out of the bath. Really tired and dirty looking basin area. Breakfast in the morning consisted of small selection of fruit.I asked for toast only to be served with mouldy brown bread. As I was in a hurry to attend a meeting I left without an adequate breakfast. The room was changed the following morning and although I had booked for 2 nights I left after the first night.I feel the rate charged does not reflect the quality of the hotel I am a frequent traveller to Zanzibar but will not be staying at Africa House again. I got some semblance of an apology ( going through the motions)

There is no elevator, so be ready to climb some stairs. The staff was friendly and accommodating. Location is within walking distance to the beach, shopping, and dining.

Wonderful bar and outdoor veranda from which to view the sunset and have a relaxing cocktail. Staff friendly and helpful. Lunch tasty and full of flavour. Slightly odd breakfast combinations. Pleasant bedroom, bathroom would benefit from update.
- Tamara (6/5): Great location if you don’t mind the noise - The location of the hotel is great - just on the coast of Stone Town, in the very centre. The room was average, and even if it said it was deluxe, there was nothing deluxe about it. It did have a sea view - but also a view on the busy road just in front of the window, so you could hear anyone passing by and talking. During the night it gets horrendous, as it is just 50m away from the biggest clubbing places (Tatu, and some other clubs), from where the really loud banging sounds come through as they mix from two or three clubs, till wee hours. Definitely wouldn’t recommend this if you are in for a good night rest!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Fantastic location - A hotel with lots of character and history, and is actually part of the Stone Town tour by many tour companies, it is therefore a shame that the hotel is not upkept to a high enough standard to really capatalise on the visitors staying at the hotel, but also passing through. The staff are very plesant and do want to provide high quality service, it is therefore a shame that the example of these standards does not come from higher management. E.g. We were located on the second floor of the hotel (no lift) and had two quite heavy suitacases, on checking out, thus walking down the 4 flights of stairs, members of staff kept walking up and down, yet none of them offered to help bring out bags down.
- Derek (6/5): Great location, but many improvements could be mad - Hotel is in a good location, not really good value though and many of the facility components require updating. The 1st floor terrace is a great location to watch sunsets but is let down by a poor bar service. Alcohol is served at London rates and beer is tepid. Not what you want in an African Summer and I stayed there for 5x days to celebrate a wedding !
- Patty McGoo (8/5): Good location overlooking the beach in Stone Town - Great location ,but no elevator and lots of stairs so persons with mobility difficulties would be challenged. Staff are very friendly and attentive. Breakfast is good. Terrace overlooking the beach and the sunset is lovely but can be very hot. Drinks and food from the terrace restaurant are very expensive - eat elsewhere.
- Cindy (6/5): Past it's due date - The hotel presents itself as tired. We were put on the top floor - no elevator. The four of us travelling together are all 50+ and it was quite strenuous to carry ourselves plus luggage up to the rooms. There is no bellhop service either. Some of our luggage didn't make the flight. We got a call at 11:15pm to announce that it had arrived. We were already asleep and asked if they could hold until the morning, but I understand for security reasons, this was not an option. Therefore, he asked if they could deliver to our room. After much discussion, the front desk said they would try to find someone. After about 15 minutes of waiting, my husband started his way down. He was met by the security guard carrying the luggage half way down. Our friends were most disappointed. They had no shower curtain on dirty tub, and no toilet paper. We quickly ran out of toilet paper ourselves. The towels were grey and showing extreme wear. There were only two bath towels and one face cloth the first day and one bath towel and one hand towel the second. The water heater in the bathroom was rusty. We had the special room with the balcony, but the doors to the balcony are installed incorrectly so that they locked from the outside only. The hotel was probably really nice in it's day. It just needs refreshing. The installation of an elevator would be huge! The sunset bar has a great view but is overpriced. There is a club next door so the thumping of the techno music is loud.

- richard (8/5): Lovely hotel with good bar/resraurant - The hotel is a beautiful building, with really nice Arabic style rooms. There are two restaurants, and the sunset terrace is lovely at sunset. The breakfast was also good.

- Kurt (4/5): Stay somewhere else - The staff was nice, but this hotel is nasty. The rooms are old and in need of refurbishing. The shower is terribly small. I got sick from the really bad breakfast. On the roof deck, I was propositioned by a hooker. Stay elsewhere.

- Rosalie (8/5): Classic elegance - The Africa House is a true safari hotel. It retains the bulletin board for travellers to post messages for friends (pre-internet). There are expansive balconies to have your favorite drink (including Pimms) and watch the harbor and passing scene. Desk staff know all and facilitate your connections. There is no elevator and there are many steps. However, there are lots of pieces of decor to enjoy if you have to pause for a brief rest. Rooms have good AC.

We did all our daily tours with Ahmed whom intereduced by hotel. Hotel terrace has a nice wiev of the ocean. Only negative thing id that the bathrooms are old and need some attention and they must stop using grey towels.
- T. Ibrahim (8/5): Nice Stay at a Historical Building - This building has alot of history. It used to be a old English club, which, after the 1964 revolution, was converted to a hotel. I like the old arabeque architecture. It is on the shore, but no direct access to the beach. Also many of the rooms do not face seaward. Overall a nice stay.
- AP (6/5): You can tell that it's old - The bath tubs in the rooms are no longer proper standard, especially when after the shower, the water fills the floor. The neighborhood was quite noisy (including staff/guests) already at 0700 hrs. A lot of tourists from other hotels came to see the sunset from the terrace

The hotel may seem a little outdated, but is has historic charm with original features and antique furniture throughout. We booked a double room with an ocean view and watching the sunset over the ocean from our bed was by far the best part of our stay! The sunset bar also offers amazing views, although the food is a bit overpriced for what it is. Breakfast was very tasty, with fresh fruit and different options. Easy walking distance to anywhere in stone town. The staff were always friendly and accommodating.

- Verified traveler (6/5): Convinient Stone City Hotel - Africa house hotel has a mix of reviews but I booked anyway because of the location. I only stayed one night and was mostly out and missed the sunset on the terrace. However with the terrible service in other establishments in Tanzania, I have to say my limited experience at Africa House was pleasant. The location in stone city is ideal if you wanna be around town and close to the Dar and Pemba ferry and the wifi was a decent speed. Breakfast looked great even on the lavish side but unfortunately I had to check out early and missed it. It's true the bathrooms flood as no shower curtains and definitely use bottle water even for tea and coffee. I gather the hotel has some significant history but I didn't investigate - being african history is usually a mixed bag. The receptionist did try to stop my Tanzanian company from entering the hotel which I found extremely offensive but I wondered whether that was him personally or whether it's hotel policy.

- Chris (8/5): Great hotel and staff with perfect location - Great, historic property with a great bar/restaurant that overlooks the water that is very popular for sunset. You can walk to shopping, restaurants, bars, and everything in town. Right out the door you can go for a swim in the morning or evening which is convenient. Multiple staff members were very helpful in planning activities before we got into town and while we were there.

- Verified traveler (4/5): Disappointing - Expected a much better quality from this hotel inline with others of the same price range near by. Nowhere near a 4 star even by African standards, definitely overpriced. The history of the hotel is good but could be experienced with a drink at the bar instead of an over night stay. Dirty towels, bathroom sink and bath/shower leaked and flooded the room. They have also put a tacky Chinese flashing light on the shower head which isn't in fitting with the history of the hotel. Overall disappointing. Glad I was only booked for one night.
- Mr Peter (10/5): Very nice old style colonial hotel. - I thoroughly enjoyed my stay of 3 days, I wish I had stayed longer. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. My sea view room was very clean and had a huge Zanzibar bed, which was very comfortable once you'd climbed in. As stated many times, the bar gets busy at sunset. However I must say I have seen better in many parts of the world. The food was good and cheap. I wouldn't hesitate to go back. Very handy for Stonetown centre.

My room (No. 4) had a full ocean view but washroom was leaking a lot of water...The hotel manager (Justus) offered us a new room with a nicer ocean view...Overall, it was a nice and enjoyable experience and the staff were so friendly and helpful...The hotel terrace is a tourist attraction for watching beautiful sunsets...

- Linda (6/5): Top location & view, dated property but historic - Great views, dated property but interesting historic significance. The negative score is due to our shower having no pressure and the shower floor was broken. Water was also turned off on our second day so we couldn't flush and they had someone hammering away at 730am. We also requested twin room online, we arrived at 10pm and they had given us a double bed instead and made us feel like it was our fault while we waited for them to clean another room that was twin. Beautiful sunset and water views from the bar and breakfast area. Great location to explore stone town.

- Janine (8/5): Africa house - There was an issue with my room onthe first day The hotel is old so some issues can be expected The staff dealt with it immediately They were helpful friendly courteous and willing to do whatever it took to make my stay a good one Staff were always friendly and polite The rooms have an old world feel and the location is very good Unfortunately the tour operator based at the hotel put me on an inferior tour I had asked for a particular tour operator " Safari Blue" but he put me on another tour I didn't realise untIl I was on the cruise - too late to do anything - Not the same standard This Apparantly happens in Stonetown when Asking for this particular cruise operator BEWARE
- lisa (6/5): Nice rooftop, well located but overpriced - For the price, the breakfast could have been better. The hotel has a historical taste but so does the rest of the island...Room was clean. Staff was good- like in all of Zanzibar :)

- Yasmin (6/5): Beautiful Zanzibar - My husband and i stayed here for 3 nights. This is a beautiful hotel, with lots of history behind it. The decorations around the hotel are just beautiful. Our room was beautiful, except for the bathroom which had a bathtub that was not designed for 6'4 guy. It was impossible for my husband to take showers without having water all over the bathroom. Other than that little glitch, its a very great place to stay since its around all the action.
- Elderly lady (4/5): Waterfront terrace bar, very popular for sunsets. - Late arrival after midnight, very friendly night staff. No lift, and original room at very top of building, changed to one on second floor, next to restaurant. Very attractive room, no view. Shower over bath - but no shower curtain, so water fell on floor, needing extra towels. Moved to room with water views, smaller but adequate, shower alcove instead of over bath. However, shower tap came off in my hand and water too hot to turn off !!! complained again and fixed. However, water did not go down drain quickly and I showered standing in many inches of water before it went down drain. Many people used sunset bar, few clients in hotel itself. Would not use this hotel again for accommodation.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Nice hotel with friendly staff, but needs TLC - This hotel is in a great location and the bar has wondeful views of the beach, however the rooms are in a slightly sad condition and could do with a bit of updating. The staff are friendly and it is a pleasant place to stay, however I think there are several places in stone town of this price bracket which may offer better value for money.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Stone Town Africa House Hotel - Beautiful mansion near the ocean, very convenient to go explore Stone Town and its little streets. Beautiful and clean room, very helpful staff. Great terrace for drinks at sunset. Good breakfast overlooking the ocean. Would recommend!
- Chad (8/5): Great Sunset Bar - Although the sunset bar was convenient, it was directly above my room. Although I paid for the seaside view, it was only on the second floor and you see little of the ocean, mostly cars and taxi drivers. H

- Fupisana (8/5): I had a great stay. - I would like to recommend the Africa House in Stone Town, Zanzibar. I frequently travel to Zanzibar and have been staying at a different hotel each trip. I'll likely return to the Africa House as the experience was very pleasant. Great staff and location at the hotel.

- KP (10/5): Zanzibar weekend diversion - Recently went to Zanzibar for a weekend while staying in Dar. I picked this online because of the great reviews, history, and bargain price compared to others in the area. When we got there, we were immediately taken by the view from both the bar area and the breakfast (free) area. This was phenomenal, and worth a visit even if you stay somewhere else (they have live music events, hookah, etc). Otherwise the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful throughout the stay. They definitely want you to feel pampered. We had a room at the top (no elevator, no problem) which had a noce view of the ocean over the red rooftops. The room was clean and well maintained with tv, fridge, a/c, and nice toiletries. The tub was one of those fancy old-time claw foot tubs which was interesting but not my cup of tea. Easy walk from ferry, short walk to restaurants/shopping/fordahani park bbq at night. Anyways, nice place/view, great value, pampering staff, clean rooms...I would recommend it.
- sean (10/5): Historical Hotel, Location and staff - The hotel was the royal family house in its day, the old library still with original books is still there, as well as photos and wall paintings showing its history. That in itself was fascinating for me. We booked the cheapest room available but was given a complimentary upgrade to a sea view room, which was lovely. A key feature of this hotel from many others in Stone Town is the view. In the evenings, we could sit at the bar (or in our room) and watch the dhows sail by. Relaxing at the hotel with a drink after a long hot day to sight seeing with a constant cool ocean breeze was not possible in other hotels we looked at -- many are further into the town, hot and stuffy. The staff were very friendly, rooms nicely furnished and stocked with a welcome fruit platter on arrival. On departure, the hotel prepared breakfast packs for us since we left early in the morning. This was very welcomed.... we will stay at Africa House Hotel next year when we return.
