Guest Reviews
- Richard (7/5): - The staff were friendly and helpful, evening meal was also good. The room needed a better clean and some of the fittings were in poor condition.
- Jo (9/5): -
- Clare (10/5): Absolutely spot on!! - Great location. Super comfy bed and think I had the best nights sleep ever!!!! Thank you!!!
- Alison (8/5): -
- Randi (8/5): - Særdeles god seng. Hyggelig «pub»hotell

- Kay (10/5): - The room was amazing. Lots of room even though it was right at the top. The food in the restaurant was good. Staff were friendly and helpful. Good selection of tea, and a kettle. Great stay right in the main street. There was live music of which I'm not a fan but other people might like it. Also the toilets were on the floor below so every time someone used the hand dryer you could hear it but other than that, all good.
- Anne-Theresa (10/5): Great customer service and the staff were so helpful. - The breakfast was really good and a great choice on the menu. The location of the hotel was great. N/A
- moira (7/5): - Friendly staff, good quality food at reasonable prices, great location. Bedroom small, no chair or stool. Ensuite had no shelfing at all had to keep toiletries on the floor and our toothbrushes in a glass in the bedroom area. Room 3 next to ladies and gents toilets was noisy, hand dryer and banging doors. Would definitely recommend if booking you request a different room.
- Wilson (9/5): - Staff great Good food
- Jennifer (10/5): A great place to stay with good food. - A lovely place to stay. Great food too. Not really a problem but due to the age of the building the stairs and floors can be a little uneven, which might be a problem for people with mobility issues.
- Justyna (10/5): - Super lokalizacjia ,pokój wygodny łazienka z prysznicem, łóżko bardzo wygodne, bardzo dobre jedzenie, ,bar z ogrodekiem ,przemiła i pomocna obsluga,,dardzo mile spędzony czas w Melrose 😍
- KP (10/5): - Staff were great and breakfast phenomenal!
- Daniel (7/5): - Perfect location in the heart of Melrose. Nice, traditional bar. Communal areas in need of a spruce up. Bedrooms functional but basic. No onsite parking and this can be an issue when Melrose is busy.
- Liam (10/5): -
- Catherine (7/5): Nice overnight stay in great location - Very good location in the centre of Melrose
Lovely helpful staff
Secure storage for our bikes
Nice breakfast Roman was small and dated
- John (8/5): -
- Richard (10/5): -
- Carol (8/5): Great charming hotel, set in beautiful border town. Perfect for purpose. - Lovely setting, charm, good local bar / restaurant, friendly staff.
Comfy bed, clean and well presented.
Great breakfast Carpets leading to rooms really dirty
Room right beside public toilets, although door separating them, made it noisy until closing time
Wallpaper hanging off bathroom wall
- Kerr (8/5): - Almost everything Stairs
- Tammy (10/5): Great location, clean and comfortable rooms, and friendly staff who made the stay easy and enjoyable - A clean traditional style hotel
- Marlis (8/5): Zentrale Lage Gerne wieder - Gutes Frühstück
- Lucy (10/5): - Everything was fine. Nothing
- Suzanne (8/5): Quiet location, easy to find - Excellent breakfast. Set us up for the day Mattress was a tad hard for me
- Karl (7/5): - Nice comfortable room with good bathroom facilities. TV did not work. No one available to help with it at 10:45.
- Innes (8/5): Going again soon - Great value. Lovely staff
- Aileen Breay (7/5): - Bed & pillows very comfortable, room clean and shower very good. Public toilets next to rooms 3&4 so can hear hand driers etc. through walls, but fortunately pub didn't have a function on or stay open late so wasn't too noisy too late.
- Judy (9/5): The Kings Arms was a comfortable & memorable place to stay in the charming town of Melrose. - The staff were friendly, welcoming and very helpful. The breakfast (included) was amazingly delicious. There was a big choice of breakfast items so something to please everyone. The room was comfortable, warm enough and had everything we needed. We also had evening meal in the hotel two nights. It was delicious, well above the standard of usual pub food. The restaurant/pub was lively and busy with both guests and locals. Our stay was everything we expected and more. There is no lift because the hotel is a listed building, I believe. I managed the stairs but it was slightly difficult for me. I’m trying to rebuild my fitness so certainly all the stairs helped with that.
- David (10/5): Great place great value for money and food was really good evening meal and breakfast staff very friendly and helpful po - Quirky and very clean It was spot on I all aspects
- Taddei (7/5): Visit to Melrose - Staff were excellent . X Food was great value for money. X Its a wee bit run down.
- Innes (8/5): Great location. - Good value. Great location.
- Ian (8/5): Friendly staff, clean and comfortable. - Wonderful staff. Super helpful.
- Hilda (1/5): Very disappointed - The location Dated, small room with chipped paintwork, filthy carpet etc.
- Lorraine (7/5): - Location was excellent. Room felt a little small.
- Malcolm (8/5): A blissful escape to a charming town - Charming, relaxed, lovely staff, great breakfast with excellent haggis. Melrose is compact and pretty and girdled by dramatic hills. Best of all, the hotel is only a short bus ride from Abbotsford, which is now sacred ground since I discovered a passion for Sir Walter Scott. We shall be back for more delightful hospitality and Scott-themed walks at first opportunity. There’s nothing I didn’t like about it. Maybe a lick of new paint on the woodwork outside the room if you’re boringly fussy but it was built in the early 1700s, so it’s characterful rather than tatty
- Stephen (8/5): -
- Michael (4/5): I would not go again (I raised issues about noise and bathroom but the hotel did not respond) - Food good Room 3 - bathroom has grungy floor and corners and a shower with black mould and discolouration. And the room is next to some (public?) toilets in which the hand dryer was blasting away every few minutes last night. The wall is very thin indeed. Rubbish!
- Elliot (10/5): - Food and the bar
- Rogan (10/5): -
- Les (10/5): - Everything was excellent at this hotel. The bar opening times as when we came back after meeting the family the bar was closed at half past nine.
- Margaret (3/5): Extremely disappointing. We were looking forward to a good Scottish breakfast. - The room was ok. Breakfast! No chef appeared. We had a choice of 3 serials, can't remember any fruit. We had slice of toast and we had tea and coffee. Very disappointing. Still waiting for appropriate refund.
- Carole (10/5): -
- Dan Thorn (6/5): - Great breakfast! Bathroom quite cheap looking. Hand soap in the shower...
Soundproofing very improvable. Could hear the noisy main road all through the night.
- Anton (10/5): -
- Jennifer (6/5): One night only - Convenience to town. Staff made us feel in the way when we arrived. Worn carpets. Loud at night. Needs some money spent on it.
- Carmel (10/5): - A comfortable room with good amenities clean linen and towels ,plenty of beverages and a welcome bottle of sherry for two on arrival.
- Dawn Parrish (7/5): Traditional hotel, excellent staff, tasty food, good location in town - Stayed here while visiting family and booked 2 rooms. Decor a little tired and rooms up 3 flights of winding stairs. Comfy bed and radiator had thermostatic valve to adjust heating. Ate evening meal in restaurant - very tasty and breakfast the following morning - full Scottish. Hotel doesnt have its own car park but during December plenty of parking elsewhere. Staff very helpful and attentive. Was bemused by small bottle of "drink tipple" in room with 2 glasses. No idea what it was - sherry/whisky, a note would have helped, as would a cork or stopper on bottle - anything could be added!
- Kieran (6/5): Not a comfortable stay but the restaurant, bar area and staff were very nice - Nice bar and restaurant area. Friendly staff. Great location. The room floor was wonky and at a bad angle so we were sliding down the bed all night. So dusty you could barely breathe. Not a great sleep at all. We stayed before and was much nicer. Room 4 you need to sort that out
- Stephen (8/5): -
- James (10/5): -
- Mark (10/5): Great stay - Great evening meal. Nice atmosphere, good beer, friendly staff reasonable price. Excellent. Stair carpet needs good clean!
- Stephen (8/5): -
- Fraser (9/5): Relaxing and comfortable. - Great bar, good breakfast. Comfortable bed, good shower. Location excellent. Staff friendly and helpful. Good value for money.
- DAVID (9/5): Great place people very friendly and the hotel was A1 - Location Na
- Adam (10/5): Great stay with friendly helpful staff - the young lady at check-in was really helpful and friendly, lovely place, would stay again and recommend
- PETER (8/5): - Breakfast vey nice, surprisingly good dinner menu, extremely friendly staff. Very good location for Melrose and the Borders
- Chris (1/5): - The staff were professional Booked a deluxe double which had a king size bed confirmed and pictures showed a bath and very nice bathroom arrived at the hotel and checked in. Was told where my room was only to find it had two single beds in and the bathroom was tiny with a fairly miserable looking shower. Went down to speak to reception incase it was the wrong room and to be fair the receptionist/manager she did not quibble or argue just said all the other rooms were sold and offered me a refund but at 5pm and no nearby hotel wasn't really adequate. I did get a refund as I wasn't paying a premium price for a less than mediocre room.
- John (10/5): - Comfy bed. Nice lighting. Great staff.
- Jacqui (5/5): -
- Raymond (6/5): It was a convenient last minute stopover while visiting a grand daughter at Uni in Galashiels - Breakfast was ok, nothing special. Room size left a lot to be desired. Photos are ambitious. Noisy next to the ladies loo. If 200yr old hotels are your thing then you'll enjoy this one complete with creaky, sloping floors.
- Donna (9/5): Saturday night refuge in the middle of a long pilgrimage walk; very comfy. - Very comfy bed and linens, room had hot water kettle and tea cup, dried my laundry on the bathroom towel radiator overnight. Window opened over main street of Melrose, town centre. Downstairs pub folks were very merry till 11 p.m. or later, but in a friendly small-town way. I would have appreciated a darker window curtain to keep out more light, but I slept fairly well. The decorator who chose paint and wallpaper shares my taste in colours, textures, and print...but failed to do an excellent job at applying paint (looked like it needed a different undercoat/surface prep) or wallpaper without gaps. So--great idea, flawed execution. Loved the updated colours in a very old building.
- Nikki (7/5): Nice clean cozy room - Cozy room with good facilities and lovely evening meal. Bit small for two people with two cases and VERY close to the toilets so lots of noise from the pub below and the toilets!
Also downstairs was bleached into an inch of its life in the morning so didn't chance breakfast for fear of an asthma attack!
- Robert (3/5): Staff excellent but the upstairs facilities need a substantial make-over. - The breakfast was OK but arriving at 7am we were served our tea almost immediately, the breakfast half an hour later and the toast after we finished the main platter. The bedroom (No 4) has flaking paint on the walls of the bathroom and there was only lukewarm water for a pre-bed bath or shower.
- stephen (7/5): Central location near amenities, friendly staff. - Central location. Staff friendly. Room clean. beer garden was spacious.
- Stephen (8/5): -
- David (2/5): Awful, no sleep and headache from super loud techno music for 3 hours 8-11 what a joke hotel. - Bar area was great. Breakfast was amazing Bed was not comfortable
Noise was unbearable from the venue area. Not just loud music but so loud I couldn’t hear the tv in my room when on full volume.
This went on for over 3 hours
- Fergus (7/5): -
- Stephen (9/5): -
- Paul (2/5): Disappointing - The staff were great, very friendly and welcoming. The bed felt very comfortable, The room was extremely small, not very clean or well presented. There was black mold in the corner of the shower, the bath leaked where it had been badly repaired, paint and wallpaper were peeling off, and overly long curtains trailed on the old carpet.
- Sonia (8/5): Extremely enjoyable - Well run frendlystaff Had history and character
- Stephen (10/5): Excellent - would not hesitate to stay again - an excellent stay
- conor (9/5): Great - Good Nothing
- mcdowell (8/5): -
- Helen (5/5): Friendly staff dirty room no ventilation - Food was excellent staff so friendly and smiley The room was dirty the surfaces were all very sticky, the carpet looked like it could do with a good clean and vac. The windows didn’t open and it was extremely hot weather outside so we had no ventilation so it was so uncomfortable to sleep.
- Jessica (4/5): -
- Dan (4/5): - Location was great, lots of lovely walks close by to the hotel Shower was on hot and only hot.
The kitchen extractor fan (which was right outside my window), started up at around 6:30am in the morning.
Breakfast was poor, over cooked eggs, no black pudding, no haggis and no lorne sausage.
- Jonathan (1/5): -
- vicki (7/5): Welcoming but wobbly - Location is good, right in the middle of town. Breakfast (just a little more at reservation) was very good. The room is really small. Just enough room to walk around the bed. And the ceiling slants in so feels even smaller (rm 6) Actually the whole room seems to slant a little 🙃. No, I wasn’t drinking 😉
- JAMES (10/5): lovely stay - clean comfortable room, breakfast ok noise from beer garden, same girl screeching out loud, took a while to get to sleep
- Nigel Bardsley (5/5): the situation was good. glad i was only staying 1 night. - Breakfast was good The manager was a problem.
the staff was not being supported by the manager.
- Alexander (7/5): Small room but for money was okay - Room was on a slight slope Staff in bar were very slow
- Dean (10/5): -
- David (8/5): Great - Very clean and tidy plus the staff where excellent Nothing
- DARREN (8/5): -
- Dean (10/5): -
- Jon (10/5): - Room was fantastic value for money. Pub and breakfast were great. Only request would be a few hooks in the room for jackets and towels.
- Naybour (10/5): enjoyed my stay as family were also staying shame it was for a sad occasion but would stay again thankyou too - homely
great breakfast
friendly staff
allowed us to be all together for pre family funeral meal
great location nothing
- Cathy (3/5): Characterful building, rooms well overdue refurbishment - The King's Arms is a lovely old building, the bar area is very attractive and the younger members of staff are very friendly. I only ate breakfast there but my full Scottish breakfast was generous and tasty. Upstairs it's a different story unfortunately. The carpets and paintwork look rather tatty. I stayed in room 11 which is right at the top of the building up several flights of stairs. The bed was comfortable but there were signs of wear and tear throughout the room. The shower looked impressive - a rainforest shower head and separate attachment -but was unusable. The temperature controller didn't work so the water was either scalding hot or freezing cold. I reported this to the manager and was told their handyman would look at it but couldn't get there until later. (The hotel was fully booked so I could not be moved to another room.) I had to resort to an unsatisfactory wash in the sink, something I've not have to do since I was a child. When I said I didn't think it was fair to be charged the full amount for a room with no working shower, I was promised a refund which never materialised. (To be fair, I did get a free breakfast.) The shower was still not working the next day so I had to be given access to a room with a late check-in to have a shower. I never did get a satisfactory shower and I'm not sure how the management could have been unaware of the problem from previous guests. Teabags and coffee sachets are provided but no water. There's a sign over the bar stating The King's Arms was refurbished in 2019. In my view, the rooms are well overdue another one. I would probably visit The King's Arms for a meal or drink but I wouldn't stay there again if I could help it.
- Michelle (9/5): -
- Phil (9/5): -
- christine (7/5): - Location and staff were nice The room was worn, chipped paintwork.
- Phillips (8/5): Staff great 👍 - Friendly staff, good food. Very noisy room, there seemed to be some fan extractor outside our room which switched on and off all night, was difficult to sleep.. also the public men's and female toilets were next to the room, so heard all the noise from the hand drying fans and squealing taps in our room.. decor in need of update.
- Relax28175959581 (2/5): Slow service - Family of three, after ordering the soup, chicken and salmon, we waited over forty minutes and being ignored by the waiting staff, I finally had to get up and ask where our order of food was. To be told oh sorry will look into this. Then, we were notified it would be another five minutes, more like ten. Sadly, soup was more like a half portion and was cold. The roll was brick hard. The other servings of food were very small and no veg served with the chicken as advertised, plus the chicken was overcooked. I did complain and returned the soup. Was given a list of bad excuses for the poor service and the soup (which I did not want anymore or to have too wait for an indefinite period of time to be replaced) and drinks ( coke, wine and water) were deducted from bill.
Would not recommend.
- Richard (8/5): Comfortable pub stay in a great location with friendly staff - would stay again - Great location, nice breakfast Found the beds a bit soft
- tonyw885 (8/5): Business trip to the area - It’s a fantastic little pub, nice atmosphere and the clientele are both local and visitors to the area. A lovely welcome.
Food is good and a good price. Steaks are great!
The reviews previously don’t do it justice. My room was adequate and quiet most of the time.
- PAUL (8/5): - Very spacious, great central location and very comfortable bed. Minor matters-No bottled water in room ,TV reception was poor and WC seat was loose.
- William (8/5): Weekend @Melrose - The food, the bedroom, All staff are very
friendly Coming home
- Peter (7/5): -
- Sarah (8/5): Lovely stay staff great room in need of refurbish - Location Room in desperate need of upgrade, although states non smoking I could smell cigarette ash from the carpet
