Guest Reviews
- Danielle (2/5): - Bed was broken held up with 2 planks of wood
Toilet seat broken
Sink coming of pedestal
All around bath silicone had gone
Door looked like it had been forced open
Central heating on in bathroom and couldn’t turn of as the nobs were missing
No milk
- Mae (6/5): - This looks like it used to be a super spot but is now sadly rather run down.
There is no one to great you, just a key with a note saying your room number.
Despite a board outside advertising fish and chips, the bar/restaurant were both closed when we were there.
The room was very dated with an avocado bathroom suite, a radiator on full blast that you couldn't turn off (middle of summer) a hot tap that doesn't turn on and a cold tap that runs hot brown water before coming through clear!
However, the room was a good size and very clean, with plenty of fluffy white towels and heavy curtains that kept the light out in the early morning.
For the one night that we needed it, it was fine, but I probably wouldn't stay for any length of time as there are no amenities close by so you have to drive for anything you need, breakfast, dinner etc.
- Anthony (4/5): - Th hotel has 90’s decor a mix of poor styles, no breakfast and shut the bar early although staff drinking just not the public. Photo on websites made me think I was getting something better your not. Mouse in hallway’s and in bedroom I had to remove it.
- Andrew (4/5): Tired, expensive and terrible shower. - The hotel is in a fantastic and beautiful location. It was a bit tired and the Family room was chintzy. Our shower didn’t get anywhere near warm and the towels were clean but rough. The hotel bar closed at 9:30 on a Friday night. The cost was relatively high but didn’t include a breakfast and was too far outside Llangollen to walk.
- Dean (8/5): - 👍
- Susan (4/5): - Location near to Llangollen is good but surrounding restaurants were closed so we had to drive into town for a meal as options at the hotel were very limited. Heating on all night in the room and no way of turning it off which made for an uncomfortable nights sleep.
- Julie (4/5): Unclean - Very picturesque, great location and views but very dirty, had to clean the bath before it could be used as was grimy and full of hair, clearly hadn’t even been rinsed. Bed linen was spotless and bed comfy though
- BARBARA (4/5): - *Says 4 minute walk to llangollen but its more like a 45 minute walk
*broken glass on bathroom floor, fire alarm going off through the night, was told by staff at checkin at 4pm that food had stopped being served yet an hour later they were serving another couple wit food, room was so dusty and dirty very old and dated, also was advertising breakfast yet no one was there the next morning to do breakfast. Only good thing about this hotel was thr stunning views across rhr countryside.. not worth £70 a night
- Zak (4/5): - Was there
- Verified traveler (4/5): - This hotel was probably great at one time, but quite run down now. Wall paper peeling. Plumbing not great. Bar closed before 8pm.
- Veronica (8/5): Nice place - Lovely hotel, location brilliant, very picturesque, had a lovely meal.plenty of choice too.
- Diana (6/5): - Set in a quiet location but less tham 5 minutes drive from village. Was cheap, suitable for one night.
- Guy (4/5): - Tired, shower ancient and spray not working. Needs seriously updating in decor.
- David (8/5): - Out of the way stay, away from the crowds
- Raymond (8/5): - Cheap affordable price. Quiet. Good food especially the Sunday roast.
- Keely (8/5): - Beautiful setting. Woke up to the cows mooing. Decor dated and pleasant. Many cobwebs in the room, light shade and ceiling and walls. Warm, cosy and TV available. Tea and coffee in the room. A biscuit or 2 may have been a nice welcome after a long day. Value for money. Pleasant and friendly staff.
- Pawandeep (10/5): - Thank soo much 😊
- Matthew (8/5): Surprisingly decent! - Very impressed. Stayed for 1 night with my 8 year old son as a stopover on the way to Snowdonia. By far the cheapest hotel I could find in the local area, so expectations were low. Impressed though at the hotel, friendly staff at check-in, decent rooms and surprisingly comfy bed!
Only downsides - the walls seemed rather thin, the angry man in the next room having an argument with someone on the phone was heard rather clearly(!) and shower lacked much pressure.
But all in all, for a cheap night as a stopover it was perfect.
Thanks!
- Chris (8/5): - Quiet and dark room.Nice big bath Comfy bed. Unfortunately the bar side was closed that week so couldnt get food or drink.
- Zaher (8/5): - Very clean, calm area, kettle, tea and coffee in the room, enough towels. But the postcode was incorrect, hotel reception didn’t answer phone to guide me. They were not allowing food in the room.
- Andrew (10/5): - The room was clean and warm but dated. The shower was poor due to mixer tap heat control. Overlooked unkempt garden. Only met one staff member who was nice and polite.
- Michael (10/5): - From the moment I arrived the staff were friendly and helpful. Location is set back from a country road so it was quiet and close to hills and mountains for walking. A few minutes drive from the main town of Llangollen it was convenient and peaceful. The chef was very helpful and able to meet my needs with small changes to the menus with ease. Room was basic but adequate and clean. Exactly what was needed for a short break.
- Lizzy (4/5): - The hotel is not where is says it is on Hotel.com - it is 1km out of Llagollen, so very difficult if you don't have a car.
Staff were not hospitable, almost surprised I was there and gave little to no information about the hotel and services. Have to order breakfast the night before, if you can find any staff to order it.
- Peter (8/5): Nice place - The hotel is a bit out of town and very peaceful. Lovely view of the hills.
Checkin was friendly and welcoming. Room was rather bland and slightly 1970s, but clean and well kept. Most importantly it was warm a comfortable and I got a good night’s sleep.
The bar closed very early which was a shame as I’d arranged to meet a friend at 9pm but by then all was in darkness.
I would have liked to try the £10 breakfast but had already arranged to eat elsewhere.
All in all, a good value stay in a beautiful location. I’d be very happy to return.
- David Elwyn (6/5): - Breakfast good. Rooms dated but warm and comfortable. Bar facilities closed at 9.00.
- Glen (4/5): - The worst place we’ve stayed at in the UK. Shocking services and terrible food! It’s quite a way out of town with no convenience at all. Zero value for money and totally overpriced! Would never recommend to anyone.
- Greg (2/5): Shabby Manor - Very tired, in need of some serious investment. Staff could do with some friendliness training
- J (2/5): - I genuinely wish we’d kept driving.
We were welcomed by a “lovely” lady who didn’t seem thrilled that we had booked so late even when I told her we’d been stuck on the road for hours. She proceeded to tell my kids to pipe down for giggling.
The room was covered in little hairs and was a little grim and loving the woodchip. All we could hear was next doors tv blaring until about 2pm and really loud laughing. Couldn’t even cover the noise as our tv didn’t work.
And oh my gosh I have never “not slept” in a bed with a mattress and pillows that were more like rocks in my life.
Definitely not a place i would repeat, the campsite opposite looked lovely if you were looking for a place to stay.
- Brian (6/5): - Meals are all homemade and fresh. Needs the breakfast to be included in price of the room.
- john (8/5): - setting is magnificent, nice choice for breakfast, nut no cereal as advertised. old fashioned rooms but clean and comfortable. a vert pleasant stay
- Paul (8/5): Pleasant retreat - This hotel has a great view (over the ample car park) of hills and forests. The hotel has solar panels and brews beer.
Room 8 was very pleasant; looked recently decorated - somewhat quirky but I prefer that. Breakfast was great; really good scrambled eggs & mushrooms.
- Katherine (10/5): Lovely room - Lovely room, 4-poster bed with a good sized on-suite. Amazing views of the mountains.
- Val (10/5): Lovely hotel in a great location. - A lovely hotel in a great location. Friendly helpful staff. Beautiful hot home cooked food and a lovely breakfast.
- Eric (2/5): Totally Disenchanted - The whole appearance was of a hotel that was closing down. There was nobody at reception. The man that was tending the gardens opened the door and let us in telling us the keys were on the desk.
There were two bars, both locked. In one there was a sign saying to use the other bar as this one is not in use.
It appeared that the place had been in this state for some time!!
We had booked bed and breakfast (inclusive) but were told they were not doing food. He said he could arrange breakfast at a cost of £10 each!!
He was extremely incommunicative and unhelpful.
There was a sign on the back of the door saying that there was no room service if you were staying more than one day. It also told us that there was extra tea/coffee/milk on a table in reception. There wasn't.
The heat in reception was like that in a sauna, and the lighting was never on.
The rooms were very tired with work needing doing to them.
It was a most unenjoyable experience and I feel that we have been lured there under false pretences.
I won't be going back again and will consider not using Hotels.com again.
If anybody was asking whether to use the Abbey Grange Hotel I would advise them to find somewhere else.
- Martin (4/5): Barely adequate. - Most positive comment I can say is, the water was hot..
Bed was Way too soft :-(, pillows hard, carpet sticky, when kettle boils it steams the tv, no reception as such - just a row of keys with names written on paper under them. The bar looked like a cross between deliverance, an old folks home and someone's front room. Place looked kinda derelict as we drove up to it. WiFi was also slower than dial up.
But there was plenty of hot water for a bath, so not all bad.
Needless to say, wont be going back soon..
- Alison (2/5): - Rated as 3 star. I arrived and there was a note with my room number and a key. I rang the hotel to see whether I could book dinner and breakfast the following morning. I was abruptly told no, it was room only, albeit there was a sign at the hotel entrance advertising breakfast. There wasn’t even a bar there. The room was adequate, but in dire need of an update. However, the lack of any amenities makes me question the 3 star rating and why Expedia have listed this misleading description on their website. I book all my trips with Expedia and have never had any problems until this week.
- Anne (10/5): Great Place to stay. - It is the second time in a couple of weeks that I stayed here. Checking in and out simple and fast. Staff very friendly. I stayed in two different rooms and both were clean and comfortable. Tv and Wi Fi reception also very good. I would go back againg.
- David (6/5): - ok, bit dated but great and quiet location
- JAMES (2/5): - Scratchy towel, I had to figure out everything for my self because nobody was there to check me in or out! I saw no hotel personnel my entire stay. Stay away!!!
- mark (4/5): A little over the hill - Everything was closed when we got there 8pm, the bar, restaurant and reception. The person there didn’t seem very interested in even dealing with us. Signs everywhere telling us what we could not do. No food in the rooms, good job we had stopped and got some food, which we took to our room, regardless on the 6 or more signs forbidding this practice. As I said every thing was closed. Decor was as old and very tired. The bed was so hard it was like trying to sleep on a snooker table. The hot water was lukewarm. The best thing I can say is it seemed to be clean.
- Simon (4/5): - Tired and dated property, staff/owners seemed very uninterested. I had a meal which wasn’t bad. Morning shower was Luke warm after running for over 10 minutes, very thin mattress and cheap bed frame, not a great nights sleep. Room rate was cheap but I’d rather spend a bit more and get better standards and service.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good location with plenty of walks.
- Aimee (2/5): - Poor check in services hallways and room was unkept, food and drink options were severely limited. Overall unsatisfactory experience. We checked out before the night ended and went to a premier inn.
- Ninian (10/5): - Just one night. Arrived late and left early, but felt very comfortable and had a great night’s sleep. Beautiful rural location.
- Peter (6/5): - Abbey Grange is a tired hotel / B&B, but OK for a short stopover. It is not in Llangollen, the map for the property is incorrect. it is on the road to the Horseshoe Pass. A good 45 min walk to the town. Staff were nice and the food good. Nice green setting fir a quiet stay.
- John (4/5): Muserable staff running a dirty hotel - I arrived very late, approx 10.30pm i think but did call twice to explain - i was in an uktra bike race from France thst went through Llangollen. I asked for a quick snack or food but was almost laughed at. I was allowed to buy a bag of crisps.
I needed to charge my cycling computer and asked to borrow a plug sat on the bar but was, no.
Room was dirty and full of flies and midges.
No breakfast either so when i left i was starving.
The owners don't sleep there so it's more like a hostel. I rarely complain and have never completed an App Q, bu this is the worst hotel ive ever stayed at
- Peter (2/5): Never again - Poor service and services. Room untidy and dirty. Bathroom dirty with 1950’s decor. Hotel closed on arrival. Bar and restaurant closed at 20.00 hrs. Hotel locked at 21.00 hrs. No exit available in case of emergency doors locked until 08.00 next morning. Room was poorly decorated with only one power socket. It was also extremely warm in the room making it hard to sleep. Beds were uncomfortable and creaky. All in all very poor. Definitely not four star as described probably only one star. Will never stay there again. Surprised that Hotels .com rated it as four star.
- Diane (6/5): - Water pressure in shower needs fixing. No room service during 5 night stay. Memory has left the memory foam mattress. Only saw staff at bar. No on there at check out. Clean on check in
- george (10/5): - Quite and not too far from Llangollen.
- Jean (8/5): - 4 poster bed ,choice of pillows
- M (4/5): - Stains on bedding and towels
Had a shower in the morning and there was no hot water so i ran a bath and had to use water from the kettle but the plug didnt hold water in. Not impressed that i couldnt have a warm shower or even run a full bath. Properth wasnt in good condition, room was constantly cold and the wallpaper was pealing on serval walls in the room. Also we had a 4 poster bed but the curtains/dress to go over the bed was srunched up in the wardrobe and not over the bed which was disappointing.
- Alun (4/5): - Landlady was not very friendly and abrupt
Room was old fashioned and cold
Hotel .com said food was available but it was not
Four poster bed was comfortable
- christopher (8/5): - Perfect location for cycling up the Old Shoe, the Horseshoe Pass and along the river to Horseshoe Falls. Quiet except for the local cows gently moo-ing. I was surprised that breakfast was not available but Llangollen itself had a delightful cafe for breakfast that also had a second-hand bookshop attached. Notices said: no food in the rooms. Lots of tea and coffee available.
- Chrissy (2/5): SHOCKING - do NOT stay there - AVOID!!!! this is the worst hotel experience ever, and i had a lot.
I was looking for a hotel in city center, it was listed with a 0.03 miles distance but it is actually in the middle of nowhere (GPS stated 6 miles)
Very rude staff (landlady?) told me it was 2 miles, easy walkable (it is not - no pathway) when i pointed out the 0.03 miles she said "what does it mean in plain english" maybe as the crow flies?!
told her this was not what i booked and demanded my money back. did not get it back ....did NOT stay there !
Will take it further.... this is not the end ....
unfortunately hotels.com was not helpful either :(
- Brad (6/5): - Staff were very unfriendly and i certainly didnt feel welcome here despite my efforts to make conversation with them. Not sure what was wrong but i certainly wouldnt stay here again. Its a shame as itcwas a lovely lication to stay.
- malcolm (10/5): Lovely weekend in beautiful wales - A return visit for us as we use this beautiful area of wales regular
We stay here multiple times as it’s an ideal location in the valley of the horseshoe pass with stunning views peaceful but close to Llangollen and Wrexham if required
We ate here and had samples of the home made beers from the owners micro brewery which operates adjacent to the hotel
The owners made us as ever feel extremely welcome and nothing was to much trouble
The Sunday carvery is excellent and I recommend that
All in all lovely stay we shall be back
- Vehap (8/5): - Beautiful place for weekend way wee been working our self
but I like to come back for weekend way lovely spot
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Requires throughout cleaning. Everything in the room was stained (assume by bed bugs), the fear of them ruined the night and the next day, still hope I haven't brought one home.
- Elisha (4/5): - Unwelcoming upon arrival, tried to argue over the booking despite having proof of what we had booked. The room was freezing cold all night.
Lovely outside view and surrounding around but that’s all
- Peter (8/5): - Staff were accomodating. Room was very clean and warm
- Verified traveler (4/5): What no breakfast! - Arrived to be told breakfast is not included even though booking said it was.
Room was clean but creaking floor and rattling doors
Room was hot with no way to turn heating down so leaving window open was required.
Tv was small but room was large and bed ok
For price I paid ok but more suitable for workman than tourism.
