Guest Reviews
- David (6/5): - They have now sold
- Lorraine (4/5): - Had to climb stairs with heavy suitcase. Breakfast wasn't until 8am so too late for many flights from Newquay Airport. Reception wasnt manned although was able to attract attention within the bar area. The hotel is walkable to the terminal but along a very busy main road with no sidewalk. Twin room but very small with no wardrobe
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Not as expected. Toilet flush temperamental. Landlord had over slept for our 8am breakfast, rang and ring doorbell to awaken him hence breakfast nearly an hour later. Bar was going to close at 6 but stayed open a little later. Landlord was polite and friendly. Bed comfortable. However the Inn was not to level of our personal expectations
- Sandy (4/5): - Property is very old .. historical.. kind of dark.. they have done best to renovate.. as a solo Traveler it was kind of eerie entering.. staff were great .. walking distance w/ suitcase to airport .. nice residential area to explore around.
- Frank (6/5): - The one man staff was very likeable but the place needed more help
- Shelley (4/5): - The owner was very nice but sadly the experience wasn’t, there was a dog barking at the property from 10pm till 4.30am , we tried to find who it belonged to but no one owned up, there was also a cockroach in the bathroom, the owner was very embarrassed and compensated me but it ruined our trip as we had a tired 3 hour journey back home
- Stephen (2/5): Filthy, disgusting and wants pulling down is my pe - Disgusting, broken and filthy.
Never will return to such a bad place.
Even coffee at breakfast is served in a cup (just a cup) carried by the owner with his bare fingers over rhe rim of the cup. No hygiene at all. Yak
The whole place needs condemning.
- Andrew (6/5): - This accommodation is super convenient to the Newquay airport
However the short walk is on a busy road amongst traffic.
- Lance (6/5): - Staff great especially Jan behind the bar. Not a good place to stay if you want a shower water is almost a trickle
- Charlotte (6/5): 2 night stay - Our room was clean and had everything we need. We felt the images on hotels.com were not representative of the room we had. Unfortunately it has not been given the care and attention it needed- the radiator was coming away from the wall, carpet ends coming up by the bathroom door (just needed cutting) and paint peeling away in places. We did not complain as these things did not effect our stay as the room was clean, however it needs some TLC!
- Verified traveler (2/5): Cheap but not cheerful - Truly awful place.
The photos were misleading.
The place is rotten, with litter and cigarette ends everywhere.
There's writing in the walls.
This place has been renovated or touched in decades.
The room and hotel smelled of damp and was musty
The bed was truly awful. Like a waterbed.
The lady that served us was polite.
The same lady was heard condoning old fashioned racism.
It was like being in the snug of a rough 80s rock bar.
Its such a shame because its a great location. Needs lots of work and some standards.
- Paul (2/5): - The property was very dirty in the bedroom bathroom hallways, rooms downstairs. The whole experience was awful. However we had no other booking and had to stay but we decided to not take the included breakfast as if the management are ok with running a dirty and mouldy property in public places, I’m sure the kitchen would be awful too. I have pictures as evidence. I do not understand how this property can be marketed to the general public. Indeed the lounge area was soiled and had what looked like straw on the carpet that was hoovered up soon after we arrived. It was incredible decrepit outside too and we would like to have a refund please.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Reasonable stay. Friendly staff. Right for the price.
- Simon (10/5): - Absolutely super staff and locals very friendly and inviting. Affordable dining and food was splendid. Wouldn’t pick anywhere else to stay while visiting Mawgan Porth.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - I'm sorry but we didn't like the room it smelt of damp and the over tub shower was falling apart. The road noise was annoying. The bath tub would rock when standing in it to take a shower. It was either scalding or freezing the water pressure was nonexistent, won't be coming back
- Jane (6/5): - My first impression of the Smuggler's Inn was that it doesnt look anything like the website said it did,
When i opened the pub door, its was dark and had a smell of dirty frying oil, The landlady was pleasant, sge showed us to our room and gave us the information about using the side door to enter and leave rather than having to walk through the pub, she informed us about breakfast times,
The room was small, and outdated, the bedding was damp and the handle on the toilet cistern was broken,
The view from the window across the countryside was the best part of the hotel,
The bar was open till very late and very noisy till at keast 12 30am, the bed was so damp it made sleeping really u comfortable, and spent most of the night clock watching,
Breakfast as a slow process, it appeared that only one person was doing everything. He was hiwever very helpful and friendly,
We were booked in for 2 nights, but left after 1 night,
The whole place coukd be lovely if it had some money and time spent on it,
- Elena (8/5): - Friendly team
- Paul (10/5): - Great Staff. Great food. Good atmosphere. Ideal for the dog.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Not as good as the photos - A walk to the airport. Run down condition. Glad it was only for one night.
- Sean (10/5): An original pub feel - Fantastic staff. Great atmosphere in the pub and amazing brisket and pulled pork food to die for.
- Wai Kuen (6/5): - The condition of the room is not well maintained. Window of the room cannot be close tightly. The handle of the flushing unit is loose......
- DAVID (10/5): - Right by Newquay Airport and a lovely walk to St Mawgan Village and the Japanese Gardens for somr relaxing meditation.
- Tom (10/5): - Great food and great service wonderful owners just like being at home
- Keith (8/5): - The hotel isn't in great condition but everything works, it just needs some TLC. The food is very good. Good quality, good portion sizes and well cooked, and the staff are friendly and helpful. So for the price, there is nothing really to complain about. I will book again.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Not the standard we expected - Booked what we thought was a 3star to be close to the airport. Definitely not 3*. There was a nice welcome from the stafff but the photos don’t show the true condition of the place. Bathroom really old and noise from kitchen fans( we think) can be heard under the condensation filled blown window. There was going to be a party the night we were booked and so there was no lounge anything like the pictures. Wanting a quiet night for an early start we decided not to stay. Not the standard of accommodation we expected. Very disappointed. We cannot comment on the food as we did not stay to try it.
- Margaret (4/5): - Breakfast was good but service was slow. Condition of bathroom in particular was run down and a loud party was held on Sat night which had a live band playing until 11:30pm and was very audible in our room.
- Raymond (8/5): - Very friendly and helpful staff
- Donna (8/5): Lovely stay - We had a lovely stay, beds were comfortable and breakfast was great value! We would stay again.
- Craig (10/5): - Great friendly atmosphere,good food
- Tom (10/5): - Great pub/hotel Lauren and Jack were fantastic hosts made us feel right at home
- Margaret (2/5): A place best avoided - We arrived earlier than planned and the place was closed. On going around the back we met staff and were able to to drop our bags. We returned to the property around 6pm to be informed they were unable to provide any cooked food either that evening or for breakfast. When asked would a continental breakfast be available the answer was no. The building is in need of major repairs lots of blown windows old furniture, tiles coming off bathroom wall, mould in the bathroom. There was insufficient shower gel and hand wash. No one available to take the key in the morning this had to be left on a table on the way out
- Andrew (10/5): - The staffs and the owners are superb!they treated costumers and guests as family!looking forward to stay there again on our next holiday!
❤️
- Nichola (6/5): - Good night stay, very friendly staff.
It needs an update though, especially the bathroom as the shower was not exactly powerful just a trickle really.
Any more than one night would be a struggle.
- Ed (10/5): A hidden gem - This is an absolutely fantastic place to come and stay at first when we were looking to book we were slightly put off by the fact that it looked like it was close to the airport. However the airport is absolutely silent. No planes really came in or out whilst we were staying, the landlady and landlord were both absolutely fantastic and a credit to their Business. The breakfast was fantastic taste and value. The bar offered good selection of drinks too. We would absolutely stay again and we encourage you to.
- William (6/5): - The staff were very friendly and helpful but the property is rundown. The room and bath were small but adequate.
- ENVEA UK LTD (4/5): - Heaters are not workings proper . Room is too much cold
- Darren (8/5): - Good value for money, fantastic breakfast
- ANTHONY (10/5): - Freindly with excellent food
- Emma (10/5): Would recommend - Had a lovely stay close to the airport super convenient and reasonably priced and super friendly staff!
- Paul (4/5): - Needs up dàting it was cheap but lack of maintanance and very warn out furnature.
- Jacqueline (6/5): - Enjoyed a 2 night stay here. First night there was a quiz ,this was great fun. Enjoyed the food which although not massive choice was very good and always piping hot .
Breakfast was enjoyable and although a little tired in decor etc. Would not hesitate to stay here again.
- John (8/5): Ok for a budget hotel - It was ok for a budget hotel.
If you want more it’s probably not for you.
- Keran (8/5): Nice pub - Very friendly staff, excellent food, room a little tired.
- Peter (8/5): - Overnight
Hotel could do bit of maintenance but had no effect on stay
Good breakfast
- Dave (10/5): Don't listen to the Fusspots.. this place is good! - It's a friendly run pub with some rooms above... It's clean and tidy, some bits not 100%, but not over priced... Good Breakfast.. Check if you want a meal late.
- Virginia (8/5): Great overall - You get what you paid for, but in a good way. Don't expect anything grand, but nice quiet bedroom, comfy bed, nice complimentary extras and quiet room, hotel and area.
- Louise (2/5): - The property is unclean and smells when you walk in, it also closed the bar at 6pm so we couldn't get a drink or anything. It was that bad we had to find accommodation else where. The pictures on the website are nothing like the property.
- Lynne (2/5): Shabby and dirty! Couldn't wait to leave. - Condition of room unacceptable. Book somwhere else! Room 6 window would not close, hadn't been cleaned for ages as mould and cobwebs, shower could only be used as a dribble or it went scalding hot ( impossible to wash hair), toilet difficult to flush, cobwebs and dirty - would have walked straight out if I could. Not worth the £100 rate charged. Double bed was comfy but no pillow protectors used and breakfast was ok, but sat there for 15 mins before someone came. Coffee served at breakfast was instant, not filter. Whole place shabby and needs a good clean and a refit both inside and out. Dead plants outside, weeds and unkempt exterior. Staff we spoke with were friendly but we didn't complain as just wanted out. I understand hotels have had it tough due to Covid, but there's no excuse for lack of cleaning and tidying up. Avoid!
- Melissa (8/5): - Basic accommodation right by the airport. The hosts were very accommodating. God breakfast.
- Jade (10/5): A great stay. Will definitely be returning - We had a lovely stay here this weekend and will definitely be returning. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming. We never got her name, but the lady who serves breakfast was so lovely. Thank you very much
- Diana (6/5): - Interesting.
- Leo (10/5): Stellar food perfect views comfy room. - Stayed as was going Eden Project, was so nice the views were incredible the food was out of the world and the service of all staff was so polite and friendly and very welcoming.
Was an active bar but after 11pm no noise.
Breakfast was delicious
Water was boiling hot.
Room was very clean tv even had a SVD slot in the back (can’t promise for all rooms but mine did)
About 5 min drive from Mawgan Porth beach
10mins from Newquay beach.
Don’t be put off by the hard bed it was so comfortable once you lay down it supported every inch of body after a long day walking.
We will be returning next year,
The only down side was the pillows needed to be renewed was flat, had to use the towels to raise the pillows.
To over come this bring your own then it’s no issue at all.
Thank you so much for a wonderful week
August 2023.
- Andrew (8/5): A charming place - The Smugglers Inn was used as a stopover and part of a multi-stop trip of Cornwall and the Devon area.
There was plenty of parking and the food was very nice. The staff was very helpful.
The building is old but full of charm but need's some renovation however I enjoyed my stay and found the view from the room outstanding.
- Donna (4/5): Not very good or worth the money - Room was alright but bathroom was bad.
The shower pressure was slow and came in really hot and took a while to get the temperature right.
Toilet seat was broken. The light above the sink was not working. There was mould on the nets. No room service so had to ask for more fresh towels, tea, coffee and milk.
Our evening meal was served on a chopping board so some food fell onto the table and seemed a silly idea to serve it that way.
- Simon (10/5): Lovely place to stay - We had a lovely stay
Shame it was for only one night.
Staff were friendly and helpful (especially hotel dog)
Room clean and comfortable and quiet.
Great view
Would definitely stay again
- Colleen (6/5): Great Staff, Average Hotel - The staff are all excellent. Really friendly and helpful and that makes a big difference. Breakfast was tasty too, so that's a big positive. The hotel itself is looking tired and has quite a few issues. Just in our room the TV didn't work properly (we tried changing the remote's batteries and that didn't help), the vinyl on the headboards was very worn, the light above the sink didn't work properly, the toilet wobbled when you sat on it. I also noticed that in the lounge area there's a leak in the skylight which meant that the sofa under it had a wet patch, which is not ideal. I think it just needs some repairs and updating. But, to repeat, the staff were really nice, so it was still a pleasant stay. Not sure I would choose to stay again though, unless the issues mentioned were tackled. It's an acceptable place to stay, but keep your expectations on the low side.
- Andrew (10/5): - Perfect location, I was able to get to plenty of tourist places. All of the staff were perfect and really friendly and always happy to help
- Dean (8/5): - The bathroom was a bit tired, and needs attention around the Bath, The room was clean and tidy and staff were very friendly.
- Barbora (10/5): - I just love it. Staff was absolutely fantastic. Food is so good in there as well. Room was nice and clean. Really nothing to complain about. Only can recommend it. If you have a bike or car this is great place for stay and plus is cheap. Definitely this will be my first choice when I will go back for holiday.
- Allan (10/5): Worth a stay, use or lose it - The staff very friendly and welcoming, we did not eat there but everything that came out of the kitchen looked good and we heard many compliments on the food from those who had eaten.
- Sarah (4/5): - Dated and pictures online didn’t reflect the actual room. Very noisy till the early hours and found a mouldy towel down the back of the bed.
- Karl (8/5): - Apart from a dodgy TV Arial the stay was reasonable would stay again as prices are reasonable good and in a quite location the owners are lovely and kind but it is slightly a travel from town
- Caroline (10/5): - Really nice stay at The Smugglers Inn, nice, comfortable and clean rooms and a warm welcome. Will definitely stay again the next time we are in the area.
- Dorothy (10/5): - The owners were incredibly helpful as I had car trouble. They were obliging and my room was more than adequately provided with comfort. A lo velt short stay snd I would go again in a heart beat.
- Liam (10/5): - Overall a good place to stop. Pleasant folk, decent service and good food. No real issues.
- Carol (10/5): - Made to feel welcome by staff. Establishment had a relaxed homely atmosphere. Evening meal available, well presented and tasty followed by equally acceptable breakfast. Rooms clean, light and fresh in decor.
Unable to get warm/hot water through shower which was echoed by another resident. Would have liked an additional mirror near to daylight of bathroom window. Light above sink didn't work.
- Susan (10/5): Great place - Loved this place, friendly staff and great food. Typical country pub feel and not that far away from Newquay and beaches.
- J (10/5): - friendly and clean. Food very good. comfortable beds.
- Altaaf (8/5): - Great staff great breakfast, only issue was the drainage in the shower and toilet seat not seated properly hated that toilet
- BERNARDETTE (4/5): - Staff were friendly food was quite good.
Bedroom was awful. It was firstly cold incredibly dated bedside table cheap and nasty bedroom lamps the same even worse. light above the wash hand basin did not work.
worst of all was the cob web which stretched from the ceiling to the floor in the corner of the room near bed. Take a look its probably still there.!!
Will use Newquay airport but not the Smugglers Inn again
- Izabela (10/5): - What a fantastic stay! My partner and our dog stayed Easter. First we thought we are bit far out of Newquay but it was best decision ever. Staff is ever so friendly especially Land Lady, nothing is too much hussle! Pub downstairs is fantastic and we had the best break ever! We will back!
- W (8/5): - Slightly old school feel but friendly, pleasant staff offering good pub food. Spotless room and a full English breakfast makes the stay great value. Thanks
- Neil (8/5): - Fine for a stay close to the airport, the room was totally ok and clean.
- Cristiane (8/5): Comfortable - It was comfy, but I had to leave for the airport. They said they would make something and leave for me to eat, but thry didn't.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Stay newquay - Very friendly went ectra mile to help you only downside no heating as it was wet and windy had c oat on all 4 days tele kept breaking down they tried best to fix last night went in next bedroom to watch excellent breakfast shower not very good either freezing or scalding
- Roxanne (10/5): - The property at first glance looks like its struggling. However once inside there is a warm welcome, an old fashioned pub atmosphere, lovely conservatory and garden and several cosy seating areas. Comfy beds.
Hosts and staff helpful and cheerful.
Menu choice limited but the food produced exceeded all expectations, most fantastic steak, well done Chef! I would describe this accomodation as 3 star with 4 stars for the cosy nooks and the Chef. Would come back
- Mark (6/5): - The staff were very friendly and made us feel very welcome. The food is excellent, however they seriously need to improve the shower & bathroom facilities. Very difficult to get a stable temperature, low pressure feed and the shower head fitting was so loose the head just pointed stright down at the taps - when I took the head off the mount to be able to use it the water became scalding. Some really simple fixes could make this hotel much better.
- Mark (4/5): - rooms are very basic, pictures on web are not a true representation - they look like a travel lodge - which it definitely isn't, the shower tray in our room had a massive crack in it, rooms need a good overhaul as does the pub in general
- Rosalie (10/5): - The inn and the staff was great. I thought there was more to do around the property, my mistake. I would recommend. Quite comfy.
- Shaun (4/5): - Unfortunately when we got to room it wasn’t great window sill had been broken badly.
There was no shower available as the water pressure was so low. Had to bath instead which took so long to run as again hardly any cold water.
- Colette (10/5): Very nice place to stay - The smugglers inn is value for money very friendly staff clean rooms lovely breakfast would definitely stay again
- Justin (10/5): Amazing stay - We stayed here for 3 nights and have to say we chose well, the owners greeted us upon arrival even helped with luggage, nothing was too much trouble, breakfast was lovely every morning, the rooms were very clean and comfortable.
We loved it that much we booked to stay again next year
- Mark (10/5): - Great little place very welcoming and friendly, room was very clean and tidy. Breakfast was awesome. Will be back when down in the area again
Thanks guys and girls
- Robert (10/5): Great Atmosphere and Great food - I went to the smugglers inn for the first time this week, with my friend and i really enjoyed my stay the staff were very friendly and welcoming which made it a very nice atmosphere to be in.
The bedrooms where good and very clean, the food was amazing too could not be happier and i will be returning again when i go to Cornwall again the Smugglers inn is definitely worth staying at if you go to Cornwall.
Thank you
- MIKE (10/5): - Great local stay to watergate bay really friendly hosts.
- margaret (10/5): Great place to stay close to the airport - We arrived in Newquay airport and walked approximately 5minutes to reach the smugglers. Lauren greeted us and served a very welcome pint. We stayed one night. The room was clean with everything you needed shower gel shampoo tea coffee and water. Breakfast was freshly cooked and delicious. Lauren is a very friendly host and we would definitely use here again
- Andrew (10/5): Excellent - Excellent service and friendly staff, close enough for a short drive to the beaches nearby. Room was clean and well stocked and staff couldn’t do enough for us
- Maria (8/5): Excellent hosts and food - Although the property is a little dated and tired, the owners more than make up for it with their hospitality. The food is excellent and large portions.
- C (8/5): Enjoyable stay - Super friendly staff on arrival and a very comfortable room. Breakfast the following morning was good quality
- Wendy (6/5): - We loved the location of the property, the staff were more than helpful. Very noisy with friends and local people
- David (10/5): - Building a little tired
The owners were lovely, very friendly
Food was very good and plenty but menu limited.
- j (6/5): The one that got away ! - Unfortunately our stay was cancelled at very short notice. We then had the un enviable task of trying to find something else which resulted in a hortible stay at a Premier Inn. Very disappointing start to a long awaited for break.
- Doinita (10/5): - Nice personal, good food and big breakfast... very nice and big rooms.
- Kathryn (8/5): Okay. - Nice place to stay. Bed was very uncomfortable though.
- Daniel (10/5): Birthday getao - Very clean room and on-site, lovely breakfast ever morning, friendly staff and guest.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Very dated and crying out for an upgrade, BUT the bedrooms were spotlessly clean and the staff were lovely, very helpful and welcoming, I only needed it for somewhere to sleep for a base to tour north Cornwall so suited me down to the ground. Breakfast (full English) was lovely!
- Robert (10/5): S mugglers inn - Rooms clean, service from young staff excellent.1 older staff member was very rude.
- David (8/5): Very pleasant - Nice room, very clean. Warm welcome and value for money.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Only stayed ine night.Quick and easy check in, clean room.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - A big old building in need of major refurbishment, very tired looking, bedrooms have had a half hearted attempt to smarten up but our bathroom had a mismatch of tiles in the bathroom and floor was dirty! The Manager was continually busy for the 3 days we were there, running breakfast on her own so service wasnt brilliant, we asked for our tea to be refilled but it never happened but she was doing her best and with a smile! We had dinner one evening, the menu is reduced understandably due to covid but just 4 starters of which king prawns was unavailable and then 20 minutes after ordering the waitress (Emma, who was absolutely amazing a true asset to the business and made our evening!) Came back and said they only had one fish so i had to change my order, my partner had asian noodles which were undercooked so left uneaten, a mediocre experience at best but in unusual times for the hospitality industry
