Guest Reviews
- Frederick (10/5): so relaxing peaceful staff so helpful and pleasant - breakfast was fabulous plenty of choices the hotel was amazing and the surroundings were so relaxing and the Abbey ruins were so historical well recommended everything was just perfect for us
- Chris (8/5): OK, I will be back - poached eggs on toast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! chilren running up the corridors at 13.00 shouting loudly
- Evans (8/5): Beautiful gem of a location when visiting the Lake District - would return - The hotel was set in beautiful surroundings but still in close distance to get to local landmarks and places we wanted to visit.
The staff were friendly, helpful and hospitable throughout our stay.
The hotel restaurant, Oscar's, was well worth booking for an evening meal. Food was clearly freshly made and to a high standard.
The breakfast that was included was again of a very good quality. The hot breakfast that we had was swiftly served and very tasty. I think a lot of ingredients were locally sourced, which really showed in the high quality of every meal we had there.
The hotel was spotlessly clean and although we only stayed for two nights regularly saw cleaners in the main areas and also had the room turned over. A personal choice(mainly my partners) but the room was very hot, and when we mentioned this, it was known to the staff. They had hot weather a few days prior and the rooms keep the heat in. Not sure if the heating was on also. We kept the windows open the whole time we were there and it did cool down so just a tip if people aren't keen on being overly hot, open windows ASAP.
Not so much a dislike, but when they say the music is loud when they have events, it is very loud. We had a room above the events room and there were weddings both nights. We could hear the songs word for word and the fittings in the bathroom shook.
This was not an issue for us as we actually quite liked the music choices of the DJ and by midnight it was all over and far quieter. Again just a side note as we have stayed in venues that host weddings before so assumed that the "noise" would be muffled but it wasn't. Again. Not a massive deal as we liked the music and the hotel was beautiful as well as the room being comfortable. Just an aside really.
- Helen (8/5): Lovely venue for a wedding - Beautiful well kept gardens Reception not as helpful as expected
- Jonathan (7/5): -
- Deborah (10/5): Had a lovely stay will go back - The room and the breakfast
- Sharon (10/5): We came from Australia to catch up with family and this was a short stay to relax and refresh before our reunion. - The lovely gardens and the beautifully restored buildings. Nil
- Helen (8/5): - Comfortable modern room with gorgeous tree and country views from the big window. Wonderful gardens with access to the Abbey. Friendly staff especially in the bar and restaurant. A dinner of sea trout with shrimps, samphire, asparagus and new potatoes was delicious. Nothing not to like. But a fridge in the bedroom would have been welcome.
- Alison (10/5): Outstanding!! - The hotel was outstanding ! Nothing!

- Fiona (9/5): Distinguished property with a warm welcome - Lovely building. Very good staff and comfortable room. There was a wedding in progress which we had been warned about but it was no problem. Breakfast was a bit chaotic and slow but that is a minor carp.
- Edward (9/5): -
- Peter (10/5): Going again soon, says it all. - Property had old world charm even the new annex was built sympathetically to Edwardian Look of the place. Grounds were lovely and easy access to Furness abbey 2 minute walk through the grounds. Dinner was exceptional and highly value for money. Nothing too much trouble for the staff who could not do enough for us. They told us we could move from the main building into the lodge rooms if we wanted to because of wedding was on that evening( it’s that kind of setting!) we did so and the lodge rooms were fantastic, a clear upgrade at no extra cost. Would highly recommend. Nothing
- Maxine (10/5): -
- Jason (10/5): Quiet, relaxing and friendly staff - Relaxing perfect for an overnight stay Nothing to fault
- Steven (10/5): - Everything. Nothing.
- Clare (10/5): Beautiful hotel, staff very helpful - Staff very attentive. Beautiful hotel A spa would be an advantage
- Ocsovai (9/5): -
- Wendy (8/5): -
- sana (8/5): Good - Room was spotless clean.but there was some long hairs on the blanket and it was little smelly.otherwise everything was clean.washroom was spotless clean and shower was amazingly hot and nice.overall loved it Little smell from the blanket and hair on it
- Holly (10/5): - Beautiful hotel, upgraded to a sweet as we were visiting for a birthday, amazing, friendly staff, and the food in the restaurant was incredible.
There was a wedding on while we were there but we were given loads of warning of the music until late and given the option to cancel free of charge, and told again on arrival. Absolutely stunning night away
- David (9/5): Abbey House - Location and breakfast Nothing
- Michael (10/5): It was super the staff where amazing, shout out to Michael in the restaurant and his team - I loved the quite and beautiful gardens located on site the hotel it’s self gives a sense of clam How quite it was

- Brian (7/5): For a one night stay en route from Scotland heading South it was suitable. We would have asked to change rooms hoping an - Although some menu items weren’t available and they did not ask about allergies the restaurant was good. Food (evening and breakfast) was well prepared and staff attentive. Tables for two could be a little larger
EV charging on site. Maybe we were unlucky with our room but there was no air conditioning and the room / especially the bathroom was stifling. Windows did not open to be able to cool the room down. A Small fan cooler mad no impact on the room. For us the bed seemed worn and too hard/lumpy.
- Scott (8/5): - Lovely building and location All good
- Jane (10/5): -
- Lynnet (1/5): Felt disrespected as all the care was being given to the wedding and no concern for us . - We checked into the hotel and were allocated a room. Upon entering, we discovered the room already contained belongings from a previous guest, raising immediate concerns about whether the room had been properly cleaned and secured before our arrival.
We reported this to reception, but were initially questioned about whose belongings they were, rather than the focus being on resolving the issue. As paying guests, we should not have been placed in a position where we were asked to account for items left in the room.
We then spent approximately one hour in reception while the matter was investigated with housekeeping and management. During this time, we were informed the hotel was fully booked due to a wedding. No alternative room was immediately available, and although a room swap was later offered, this was then withdrawn shortly after despite us agreeing to it.
Eventually, we were offered a complimentary meal and drink; however, this did not reflect the level of disruption caused. We were unable to proceed with our planned evening, and instead spent the first part of our stay dealing with a room allocation and cleanliness issue.
Given that the room was not in a ready or secure condition on arrival, and the significant delay and disruption caused to our stay, we feel a refund for this experience would be appropriate.
- Felicia (6/5): Beautiful location. Adequate hotel with great customer service. - Customer service was excellent. The price for value was not equal. The room smelled like dog upon arrival and was lacking the quality described in the listing.
- Joanne (10/5): Very accommodating and friendly - Nothing was too much trouble. Everyone wanted us to be happy. Nothing
- Naomi (8/5): - We loved the hotel and surrounding area. Lots of places to see/visit. The staff in the restaurant in the evening weren't friendly at all. No smiles and seemed in a rush. Morning team were lovely, such a difference.
- Christine (8/5): - Road closed at hotel entrance. An email to tell us would have been useful. Delays figuring out access meant we were late for our hospital visiting.
- Hannah (9/5): Comfortable stay - Beds were so comfortable, we slept really well. The full English breakfast was delicious with a great selection of cold foods as well. Beautiful hotel and gardens. Would have liked more coffee in the rooms, but to be fair I could have asked.
- Rachel (8/5): - Lovely property, there was a wedding on but you couldn’t hear anything from the rooms we were in. Lovely and clean and friendly staff Eggs Benedict wasn’t the best but the full breakfast was good
- April (10/5): Lovely would recommend and would return good value for money - Lovely well presented place and breakfast was lovely. The room was a little hot.
- May (6/5): Staff let it down - Very nice building - room was lovely and the food was good. Very loud as they have weddings most the time here. Staff were so unbelievably rude. Receptionist who checked us in was horrible and the man who answered the phone in the evening was also very rude. Though the staff who brought the food to our room were nice.
- Ryan (8/5): -
- Siming (10/5): -
- simon (10/5): Great VFM - Extremely comfortable room, great friendly staff and an amazing breakfast for just over £100. Great value for money.
- Joan (10/5): Enjoyed our stay.. staff very welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble.. home from home.. food was delicious.. we will de - Excellent N/A
- Jeanette (10/5): - Everything it was nice and clean the food and breakfast was excellent the gardens was fabulously maintained its was a brilliant night away Nothing everything was excellent
- Jim (7/5): - Very clean and comfortable, beautiful room, friendly staff and good breakfast. We had been forewarned about a band playing but were assured that the music would stop by midnight. This happened and and was absolutely fine, however just afterwards the rooms around us, particularly the suite next door, started what seemed to be a party. This went on with very loud music, doors constantly banging and loud shouting, until 4am. Consequently I only had a few hours of sleep, (although they were very comfortable.)
My wife somehow managed to sleep like a log through the whole thing.
I would have got up to call reception or even knock on their door but I use an APAP machine, and once I'd managed to get it fitted I didn't want to move.

- Irene (10/5): A lovely all-round travel experience! - Loved the room, the location, the restaurant (one of the best dinners I’ve ever had) and the reasonable price! The entire stay was a treat!!
- Roy (9/5): Was short stay but still excellent apart from the noise next door - Grand look Could hear next door very easily

- Diane (7/5): Abbey House lovely, Oscars just average - We were upgraded which was nice
The breakfast is very good and the breakfast team are very friendly The staff in the evening aren’t very personable
The restaurant food is very expensive, service is slow and the food is pretty average
- Lynda (10/5): The hotel was beautiful. Food was excellent. - The hotel, room, staff, food was exceptional Nothing
- Sarah (8/5): -
- Denise (10/5): Provided the perfect stop over, relaxed, safe, and very welcoming - The room was very comfortable, a little warm during the night until we opened the windows. The dinner and breakfast were excellent. It was in impromptu overnight stay for myself and daughter which ticked all our boxes. There wasn't anything we didn't like, Had the weather been better the following morning we would have walked to the Abbey which was recommended by one of your staff members.
- Paul (10/5): Fantastic will stay again - Booked for our anniversary, the hotel had upgraded room and left a happy anniversary card for us. Beautiful setting, beautiful hotel, great staff, gorgeous food, can we say more. We love the lakes and definitely will book in the future. Can’t think of anything.
- Kate (10/5): Far better than we expected - Unbelievable stay I can’t wait to return Everything was exceptional
- CAROL (10/5): Opulence, rest, relaxation, you get what you pay for and more - it was brilliant! - Completely luxurious and extremely spacious. Off the beaten track too. Historic site. The size of my suite, the warmth, comfort attention to detail - everything. Absolutely everything. Staff were wonderful, the restaurant fabulous, breakfast wonderful - just everything. I want to go back and I only left this morning!
- AKN (9/5): - Lovely decor and setting. Smart and clean. Needed a bigger bed... not used to a double and was too small for us.
- Debbie (10/5): - The staff were very attentive excellent service. Food was fabulous. Room was clean and had a good night sleep . The garden and surrounding was beautiful could not of picked a better hotel to stay There was nothing that we did not like can not fault the hotel in anyway
- Paul (9/5): Very good -
- Valerie (10/5): We have stayed on a number of occasions and it is extremely likely that we will return. - Nice accommodation, clean and comfortable. All staff extremely pleasant and helpful.
Thank you for the additional birthday sweet. It was much appreciated.
- LYNNE (7/5): For £149 for 1 night b&b there are better places to stay!. - The hotel is smart with a nice upmarket feel to it!. The staff were mostly friendly and helpful particularly Esther on reception, Ta-Ta and the young bearded gentleman working in the dining room!.The evening meal was very nice, fairly priced and breakfast was bery tasty not to mention huge! The things I didnt like were that the whole hotel and in particular our room was cold for the first 12 hours or so after we arrived!. We had a small oil filled radiator in the room but it didnt make much difference!!. I politely complained to the receptionist but was told that the management had switched off or turned the heating down low because the week before had been warmer! The heating came on about 7pm apparently so by the next morning we felt comfortably warm!.(I didn't appreciate having to wear my partners jacket in the dining room for my evening meal because I was cold!.) The other thing I felt was lacking was a lounge for guests to relax in. There were some chairs and sofas dotted around the hotel but they were in hallways or corners and a cold draught was blowing through making it unpleasant to use them. The bar area had a couple of nice booths but they had reserved notices on them most of the time when they were not being used. All in all we quite enjoyed our stay but for almost £300 for two nights bed and breakfast we did expect better. see previous comments.
- Lutz (8/5): -
- Kathryn (9/5): Still enjoyed our time - Property is beautiful The fact we had an interlocking door connected to our room with a noisy child next door room banging on the door and slamming there own room door.
Even though we were emailed to say there may be a function at night nothing was said about this part of the room
Would of been nice to be told and able to upgrade if nessesary
