- Andries (9/5): Old school charm in the Midlands that also offered great value for money - Lythwood Lodge is nestled in a beautiful setting in the Kwazulu/Natal Midlands. It has an old school charm, with very comfortable and spacious chalets. The staff members were very friendly and professional, and we were pleasantly surprised by the turn down service when we returned from supper. The dining hall was wonderfully warmed with two fireplaces, and the lounge area has a wonderful array of books. The dirt road to the property is in decent condition, but would be a little better after being scraped. Our fridge/freezer was not so new anymore and created a hum that is audible. It wasn't terribly disturbing though - it was only when the television was off and we all retreated to our bedrooms that it was noticeable.

Lovely lounge/library. Good breakfast. Netflix is available. Plenty of photo opportunities. We were there for the Midmar Mile event. The property is about 25 minutes from the Midmar Dam. We booked a two-bedroom chalet. On arrival, we were informed that no chalets were available. We were given two adjacent rooms. The rooms are a bit dated and could do with some modern upgrades. The à la carte dinner was forgettable. The pasta was overcooked.

- Thiran (10/5): A Hidden Gem - Outstanding! This place exceeded our expectations. From the amazing location to the warm and gracious staff. The cottages we’re super clean and spacious. Whilst the bedrooms do come with electric blankets, we would have preferred extra blankets.

The staff are really a pleasure to deal with & nothing is too much trouble. This was our 2nd visit here & there will definitely be a 3rd ! Variety at the breakfast table could be looked at but nothing too serious. The potholes caused by the recent rains made the roads really challenging & I feel all the farms & businesses in the immediate vicinity could made an effort to try do something about it.

It was excellent value for money, the pap was the best we’ve ever tasted & the chops really well cooked. The staff were friendly & helpful. The fruit selection at breakfast was a little disappointing & the salads on Christmas Eve could have been better. They were not vert tasty & the variety was lacking.

The staff was very friendly and we appreciated the personal touches and extra effort that the staff went to. The food was, overall, excellent. The property was some distance from the main road (around 8 kilometres along a dirt road). This not a problem in good weather, but in rainy weather, it can become a bit of a challenge.

A very relaxing atmosphere at Lythwood Lodge. All Staff are very friendly. The drive to the location was a surprise to me, as it was 5km of gravel road from the main road to the accommodation. I travelled on a day that was raining and that made the road dangerous.

Pleasant views all around. The detail on the decor is just beautiful. Old world comfort. Also liked that there are self catering cottages as well as catered rooms. The food was absolutely amazing and the friendly staff ready to make the stay even better. We weren't initially booked in for dinner but they accomodated us without event when weather prevented us from leaving the lodge. I especiallyloved the turn down service. The room was also sparkling clean. It would have been really lovely if our private bedroom fireplace was working. I think this was a fluke event as it doesn't seem that they would leave an issue or bad detail unattended.

Not everyone drives a 4x4 and in the rain it was extra stressful navigating the dirt roads. The lodge overall was not clean. Dinner was below average and food arrived cold. My room was cold, not clean, spiderwebs everywhere. A very unpleasant stay overall.

However, the accommodation, staff and dinner were excellent. Worth a longer visit. Phone the lodge before driving there. The SatNav will try to take you up a closed road being repaired. The lodge will provide directions for the detour and allow 10 minutes of extra time on your journey.

They were a pleasure to deal with. They were friendly and warm. Pretty dining room. We were expecting a king size bed since this was the option we chose on the booking. Room was not inside the beautiful main house. Dinner was overpriced for what you got. The breakfast is great if you want a cold and a hot breakfast and the amount of food that they bring you. We would have preferred to choose what we wanted and totally skipped the cold breakfast and pastries. I feel that for a 4 star establishment they should have a proper coffee machine not just filter. En suite bathroom needs an update. There is a pool table in the lounge area but you have to pay R5 per game. I feel that is petty and since we had no change we couldn't play.

We will be back. - Location was great - we travelled on an adventure bike so was great - the road is potholed - BUT we saw many cars on the road so if you're prepared to drive slowly and carefully it won't be a problem. Breakfast was amazing - because we were the only guests there was not a buffet breakfast - but we were served the most amazing breakfast - fresh fruit salad, yoghurt and muesli to start. Great coffee and juice. And a full English breakfast. We wanted for nothing. Server was friendly and very helpful. Weather was cold when we went up - but the room was warm and toasty. A gas fireplace, heater in the bathroom and electric blankets ensured that we were very cosy and warm. Fantastic room!

The property had a small pool, hiking trail, jungle gym and lots of boardgames, pool and table soccer. The pictures did not do the chalet justice! It was clean, with a spacious and cozy interior. Breakfast was excellent and the outdoor braai and well-equipped kitchen in the chalet were good additions. Great that we could bring along the family dog! The dinner menu was unimpressive, given the very high prices. The hiking trail could be better marked.

Its right next to reception, very noisy. Someone started tinkering on the piano in the lounge a short distance away which woke us up very early

- Berdene (10/5): Peaceful getaway in the midlands - The location is peaceful. The staff are friendly and the food was good. Would visit again. The main road coming to the lodge is in bad condition with lots of potholes. Breakfast served only from 8am is a bit late.

The road to the property is quite bad, it’s a dirt road and due to the storms in the area there were fallen branches and mud to navigate. The property did call to check on us but advanced warning should be given.

Yes, its on the top of the hill but roads were not good and when you driving in night, its difficult. Make better road and put some signs/lighting on the road.
