Guest Reviews
- Christine (7/5): Great stopover with our dogs - Very friendly, homely place which allowed our dogs and the staff were very friendly and interested in our dogs. It is a converted home and still feels like walking into a home. Bathroom could have been cleaner

- Fox (8/5): Great host -

- Herbert (5/5): All right for passing through - There isn't much in Methven itself, but the lodge is conveniently located for passing through. It's a 10-minute walk to the village, where there are three pubs.
The host is very friendly and helpful! It wasn't really clean, sorry! It was okay for one night, but that's about it!
- Darragh (1/5): -

- Turp (8/5): - Good location, close to Mt Hutt

- Jean (9/5): Our stay was very special as I met up with my school friend in Ashburton as she had flown down from the North Island . W - It was quaint . Never before have I stayed in accomodation like this as an 80 year old woman and I enjoyed talking to the other guests and learning why they were in Methven. Would stay again when I revisit my home town .A Methven girl through and through. 🥰
- Lynne (5/5): Short - Good
- Carole (7/5): Good -
- Emma (8/5): - The views
- Keir (9/5): Superb -
- Diana (8/5): Home stay feeling in Methven - Great communication with the property- we arrived late, informing them in advance we're coming late at night and they were kind enough to accept us. No fuss over check in or check out procedures, pretty laid back. Towels provided, heater in the room, fire place in the living room, free parking place, laundry, plenty of dishes and utensils in the kitchen. In general it felt as if you were visiting someone at their home rather than a hostel/hotel, which was nice. The owner was very kind to provide information about places to see on our way. Thank you! The bed was too soft for my liking and the room was quite narrow for big suitcases. The light in the room was quite low and the window blinds were not working well.
- Renee (6/5): Locations good, basic accommodation. - Good location, quiet, guy who runs it was very nice. Beds probably need new mattresses but still had a good night sleep, was good for one night passing through.
- Kidd (7/5): Fine for our needs - just what we needed for our 1 night stay, like the quirkiness of the place The beds were a bit soft
We didnt meet the owner as he was out but another guest was helpful at the start with information etc. As the evening wore on he became a bit annoying as liked to hold the fort in the communal area
- Tyson (1/5): Bad -
- Fianee (10/5): Exceptional -
- Liam (10/5): - Great atmosphere
- Roy (7/5): Good -
- Logan (9/5): Awesome place especially to meet some people to go snowboarding with, nice and social. - Good place with relaxed Hostel vibes, warm fire with a super cozy lounge. Close to bars, restaurants and shops. Management were helpful and welcoming. Beds could be better, less soggy for the back.
- Christine (6/5): - I tried several times to contact the property manager at least 24 hours prior to arriving so we knew how to book in as it is unmanned. Absolutely no response to multiple attempts at phoning. When we got to the property there was a hand written note on the door with room number and keys were in the door. Room nothing like the photos. Beds were terrible. Will not be staying again.
- Anaïs (8/5): Nice backpacker's house - I really like the backpackers life and the share room were really good there.
Good location on the way to Christchurch.
- Janet (9/5): Superb -
- Li (9/5): Superb -
- Alexandre (8/5): - L'ambiance avec les jeunes
- Jonathan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anonymous (3/5): Poor -
- Maegan (2/5): Very poor -
- Mitchell (3/5): Poor -
- Helen (7/5): Okay - Quiet place with separate beds in the dorms rather than bunk beds, bathrooms are new and clean The kitchen is quite small, not well equipped, and it could be cleaner. The lounge is quite old fashioned and was a bit cold when I was there. Only a couple of people when I was there so not very sociable.
- Pierre (3/5): Poor -
- Urban (3/5): Would not recommend. - Cheap. Showers and toilets ok Smelly and untidy room. Hairs on the bed sheets. Cables looked very unsafe. Very old furniture and substandard kitchen. Even if it's very cheap there's better value elsewhere.
- Jerry (7/5): Good -
- Bill (7/5): Good -
- Ollie (8/5): Very good -
- Nic (8/5): Great - it was handy, friendly and clean.
- Tin (6/5): Pleasant - I felt comfortable and I enjoyed my stay there. staff was nice and friendly, fire place in the kitchen and living room, free eggs. close to the mountains for skiing and hiking. everything is quiet old in the lodge except the showers. A lot of things should be fixed, cleanliness is not the best
- Emyr (7/5): Good -
- Molly (1/5): Bad -
- Chris (10/5): Exceptional -
- Devan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kamila (5/5): Passable -
- Erik (8/5): Very good -
- Charlotte (5/5): Passable - Cosy hostel and room. Located in a quiet area. Would have expected better cleanliness of the facilities.
- Leanne (6/5): Pleasant - Great location and very friendly staff. Poor cleanliness.
- Paul (10/5): - Essentially a shared home made over into a hostel. Very convenient, and friendly management.
- Germon (4/5): Disappointing - Location was fine and the building has an interesting history. The shared toilets were clean. The lodge appears to be operating like a backpackers with most occupants working at the ski fields. That's all fine but it should be advertised as such. Issues included scrunched up damp towels in the room tossed on the top of a built in cupboard where a very dusty television was located. Can only assume they'd been used by the previous occupant. No fresh towels to be found. The pillows smelt stale and are in need of replacement. Windows in the bedroom were extremely hard to close in the room, which wouldn't be an issue in the summer but not so great during the snow season. Immaculate rooms at an equivalent price are available at other locations in the centre of the township.
- Tara (8/5): Very good -
- Ross (5/5): Passable - Did the job for 1 night They have a cat incase your allergic no mention on arrival
- Diana (5/5): Needs more polishing jobs to do. - Free range egg 🥚🥚🥚 from the owner. Lots of tissues and towels accessible, no need to request. Very cold room, very small heater is not sufficient to heat up the room. The whole place needs more tidying up jobs to do. 2 separate single beds are just too small for us.
- Claus (8/5): Very good -
- Dean (9/5): Superb -
- Keith (7/5): Good -
- Heidi (8/5): Enjoyable. - Peter lit the fire each morning + evening. The fire in the morning was a sweet touch. Felt cosy + family like to be greeted by he and Benji each morning.
The local chicken eggs were a treat.
Chrome Cast on the tv was appreciated. There was mould on the window sills & windows in our room. I know there was a dehumidifier in the room, but be a good idea to give them a wipe in between guests. Smelt moudly too.
- Nukumai (8/5): Very good -
- Mccoid (10/5): Exceptional -
- Oliver (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jackson (7/5): Good -
- Lei (6/5): good value for money - good location a bit cold in your own room, the lodge has a fire place though.
- Feiying (8/5): Very good -
- Shannon (5/5): We needed a bed for night and thats what we got, bit to expensive for what it is - Beds were comfy enough and we got a separate exit right out to the car which was handy Dog poo right outside our hallway door, guttering broken so big rain drips soak you going in and out, heater is very rattly and tv in there but it doesnt work, alot of hair in the shower and toilet stools have the biggest gaps under them
- Janet (10/5): I enjoyed staying here. I'd stay again. - The staff were very nice and the stay was very cozy. There weren't enough power outlets.
- henrik (8/5): Good night! - Short and sweet, warm and cosy
- arlette (10/5): we had goods walks around that small town - no public transport to get methven but shuttle to go strait to christchurch airport
- Steve (10/5): Fantastic aura - Friendly host nice fireplace terrific vibe sociable guests, good location for transport and shops Felt like home from home, great conversation and rooms were very comfortable will definitely stay again
- Zyrus (10/5): Recommended!!! Will come again - Nice and cosy lodge, good communication, thanks for the arrangement with my late check-in =)
- Verified traveler (10/5): Cosy and friendly - The lodge itself is cosy and well heated. Beds were comfortable and kitchen and bathrooms clean and easily accessible. The owner was friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay here again!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We stayed there for 1 night on the road to Christchurch.
The staff we could have a late check out because of the snow.
Nice and warm plece :)
- Lynnie (6/5): Location was ok - Unfortunately one of our rooms had been newly painted, definitely not pleasant and I think they should have warned us about this when I first made the booking a month prior. No excuses, they should have let me know. That was very disappointing.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Convenient to ski fields and CHC airport - We spent one night and found the room to be overcrowded with stuff not useful to us--eg we needed more room for packing and sorting than for large screen, electronic stuff etc. Staff were a little too chatty, but having said that, the small studio was clean, the owners very pleasant.
- Melody wang (8/5): 很奇妙的感覺 - 大樹的老闆很熱情!也非常喜歡東方文化解說的很仔細!
因為我們去玩的月份不是正好滑雪的時間點!意外住到一棟房子只有我們的一晚很好唷!
- Florian (10/5): Nice Holidays - We booked a twin room which was very clean and thebeds were warm and comfy ! In the living room was always a warm fire , movies on the PlayStation and games to play ! I enjoyed my staying at big tree lodge and I'll come back!
Thanks to the hosts Lee, Heather and Roger , it was nice to meet you
- A C (10/5): Nice homely place to stay - Very helpful, if u forget some things they try to help u out, very homely and warm
