It's central location is ideal for access to restaurants, pubs and coffee shops in the local area. The whole place is spotless and has a quirky charm, and the room was very well catered with a myriad drinks options in the room, as well as homemade biscuits! - Alison (10/5): The Perfect Old Post Office - We were greeted, and received a warm welcome, from Keith. He pointed out where breakfast would be served and then Keith showed us upto our room.
The room contained everything we could possibly need, including tea, coffee, hot chocolate, water and homemade biscuits. A fresh individual bottle of milk was kept in a fridge on the landing, for each room. The room was very big, containing arm chairs, a table and chairs, a wardrobe with coat hangers, a torch, ear plugs and an extremely comfy bed!
WiFi was available, with the code written on a business card on your nightstand.
The private bathroom had lots of clean towels, great toiletries and Keith was on hand to explain how the shower worked. A form to complete for breakfast, in addition to the fresh fruit, cereal, etc. that would be on offer, provided plenty of hot choices for the following morning.
The Old Post Office had a lot of original features, I particularly loved the window shutters and the naming of the rooms, we were staying in the 'Penny Black'.
There is a local pub next door, where there was a singer performing when we stayed; however, this added to the ambience of our stay and did not disturb us at all. You could even sit downstairs and play one of the many board games on offer.
It is in a wonderful location, with a local fish & chip shop, numerous restaurants, florist and shops. We ate at the Italian restaurant across the road, which had an extensive menu and the food was fantastic!
The following day we were travelling into Newcastle for the Great North Run, so the location was perfect for us and great value for money.
Before we left, we enjoyed Keith's fabulous breakfast, enjoying all of the local produce and Keith had even made the bread.
Thank you so much Keith, our stay certainly helped in my preparation for the run, which I did complete in a personal best! We loved it, a home away from home.
- Martin (9/5): Lovely B&B in a Good Location - Keith (the host) was very friendly and helpful.
The breakfast was very good (we both chose a variety of the full English breakfast) and all locally produced.
The location was very good, and the village had a number of shops, pubs and eateries.
Although there was no private parking, we had no problem street parking near the property. Nothing, everything was good.
Nichts

- Maria (10/5): A wonderful gem of a B&B in a beautiful village - What a wonderful B&B with a warm welcome by Keith. We had to find somewhere to stay at short notice due to an elderly relatives illness. Keith was amazing! A warm welcome but also respectfully giving us time to process the current situation. He made a difficult situation bearable with his kindness and we can’t thank him enough!
Regarding the room, WOW! Outstanding, every little detail is thought of, earplugs for noisy sleepers, he must know my husband snores, or is it me??. Or both! Whoever it is the earplugs came in very handy, we slept very well in a very comfortable bed. The refreshment tray had everything you would want and more!
Then the breakfast! Oh my, why have we not found this gem in this beautiful village before! Keith provides a very extensive breakfast menu which we advised him of our choices of the night before. Everything and I mean everything(!) is sourced locally or within a very short distance. You could taste the freshness of the eggs from their hens in the garden, the homemade bread made lovingly by Keith the night before! Well, I could have eaten the whole loaf given the chance! Delicious!
The Old Post Office is absolutely outstanding from the history adorning the walls, the attention to detail in the rooms, the delicious breakfast and the welcome received by Keith. We would highly recommend and will definitely stay here again. Thank you Keith for your kindness. Nothing, it was perfect!
- Neil (10/5): Great place with friendly staff and lovely breakfast. - Nothing to dislike, although there was a street light outside my room window but the wooden internal shutters cut out the light into the room.
- Pam (10/5): Exceptional - The Old Post Office was the perfect spot from which to head into Durham for the day, bus service very easy if you don't have a car. The local Italian restaurant was amazing and Keith, the owner of the B&B went above and beyond to make my stay easy and comfortable.
- Catherine (10/5): Really relaxing friendly atmosphere with a terrific host and lovely food. - Lanchester is a beautiful friendly area. The host Keith is a lovely man friendly informative and really cares for his business. The breakfast is cooked perfectly with produce from his own chickens and garden and anything he can’t produce himself is locally sourced. He bakes a mean loaf. This is the second time we have stayed at this property and if in the area again wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again. It is home from home and really relaxing. I can’t think of anything.
- Sarah (9/5): Superb - Nice and central and comfortable
- Ian (10/5): Exceptional -

There are three upstairs bedrooms, one of which sleeps 4 and has views over the street. Coffee, tea, chocolate, and homemade biscuits. With a small fridge in the hall
Keith cooks breakfast, which is ordered the night before. Home-made bread and free-range eggs. Plus, different cooked options, fruit, cereal, and yoghurt
There is a direct bus into Durham from the village Ideally, a heated towel rail would be useful, as towels did not dry fully.
