Guest Reviews
- Sveva (6/5): - Old facility and food very average

- Nikita (2/5): -
- Minna (9/5): -
- Grace (9/5): Perfect base for exploring the kumano - We stayed in the private onsen room and it was amazing. Morning soaks overlooking the forest. The views are amazing. Dinner and breakfast was also great.
- Hugo (9/5): -
- Jackie (8/5): Nice easy location - Spacious room with our own private onsen was a plus!
The room had a nice view of the river and the food was good. We were surprised how much dirt was in room and hotel elevators. For the price we paid, it should have been sparkling clean everywhere...not just surface cleaning. The next morning after our 1st onsen the night we arrived, the private onsen had all sorts of things floating in it. Don't know if it was accumulated algae or what, bit wasn't so appealing. Again, for the price we paid, we really should have gotten a place that was super clean.
- Alejandro (9/5): Unique - Dinner was so good! very traditionar. A lot of fooooooood
We took the private Onsen for 45 mins, great price grate experience, plus the experiences of going to the river with a shovel and build your own its so unique loved it. Hotel is great, staffs great, location is great, wish they could modernize a bit the facilities, i can understand its an old hotel and it dosent bother at all but could be nice maybe getting it a bit more new stuff keeping the traditional style it has which is lovely
- Ren shou (7/5):
- Brake (10/5): Soak the tired bones - Fantastic value for money! We stayed here for 2 nights on our Kumono Kodo walk too soak our tired bones. I wish we could have stayed longer. This was an authentic Japanese experience with onsen indoors, outdoors and natural by the river. The rooms were traditional Japanese style and the food was fantastic, great value and served by friendly staff. We made use of the shuttle to Hongu Taisha and Hossihinomin-oji.The local bus stop is right in front. This is a very traditional Japanese style onsen which suited us

- Stacie (8/5): The food and the Onsen were so wonderful! - Meals were amazing!
One of us has a fish allergy and the cook did a great job preparing alternative foods. The walls in the toilet room and shower room were stained and looked dirty.

- QI (7/5): -
- Kalayanee (8/5): -
- Steve (10/5): Excellent. - The Omakase dinner was never ending !! So much food. The server was very gracious and kind. We both had tattoos and the staff said it was ok for foreigner travelers. The rooms and onsens were spotless.
- Cheng Yu (10/5): Perfect. I want to come back again soon - Not crowded Nothing
- boyu (8/5): -
- Allen (8/5): -
- Beverley (7/5): -
- jun wei (9/5): -
- Rut (10/5): Je recommande - Personnel a l’écoute et attentif.
- Steve (7/5): Traditional Japanese onsen - Friendly staff, clean and tidy. Great location and outlook for getting away from the crowds. Natural river bed onsen is truly unique. Hotel decor is a bit tired. Would have been very nice when new but is a bit old and due for a cosmetic refresh. Warning for non Japanese guests, Meals are traditional Japanese with no menu or deviation from the chef's plan.
Kumano kodo. Gratis parkering. Bad i floden direkt utanför hotellet var fantastiskt
- Beverley (7/5): -
- Haley (10/5): Beautiful location and delicious food! - The location is amazing. Right on the river where you can dig your own hot spring was perfect. The food was great and women serving the meals were the absolute sweetest! We had the private onsen which I highly recommend! The hotel could definitely use a fresh coat of paint or two. Nothing that should deter from booking. It was all very clean, just could use a refresh and polishing!
- Linda (8/5): -
- Ruby (10/5): -
- emil (8/5): - The room private onsen was amazing, and the shower too!
Big and clean rooms The dinner and the breakfast is not compatible to the western pallet.. it’s nice to do traditional dinner and breakfast but this was little to many
- Will (6/5): -
- Maria (9/5): - Great location, the staff were excellent and the food was one of the best I have had. The futon mattress was not as comfortable compared to some of the places we have stayed at. It could be better.
- WEI HENG (7/5): -
- Olivier (5/5): -
- Youji (5/5): -
- Giri (6/5): -
- LucaA77 (9/5): - The personnel are really kind and available, both at the reception and at the breakfast/dinner area.
They are welcoming, kind and helpful.
Dinner and breakfast are really tasty: the first morning we had a Japanese style one and on the second day more European. While japanese is our preferred one, we quickly understand why they alternate (there were some Brits complaining of the Japanese style one, because it was too different)
The common outdoor Onsen Is nice, and the one in the room is fantastic. The river onsen is a wonderful experience to have. The common outdoor onsen could be renewed, but it is a detail.
- Ingrid (9/5): - Exceptional location. Beautiful dinner and breakfast. Hard pillows.
- Chan (9/5): Great location and food near the trail of Kumano Kodo - Excellent location(buses stop right in front of the hotel), great dinner and breakfast, good price near the trail of Kumano Kodo. I wish I knew they pickup from the bus station and provide free shuttles to local shines and Kumano Kodo trail. Rooms are kind of dark, especially in the bathroom toilet area
- Jo Ping (8/5): -
- Mayumi (9/5): -
- Liang (10/5): Exceptional - Relaxing and quiet
- Vina (5/5): I would not stay here again - Friendly staff and did their best to be helpful
Great location
Dinner was okay on day 1 and great on day 2
Breakfast was average Rooms are old, desperately needing upgrades
Bedding and carpets were stained
The toilet smelled like urine and we requested a change of room
- Wanpen (5/5): Passable - Dig my own river onsen. Beautiful location , facing with river. Meal is not worth to the money
- Kristin (6/5): Pleasant - The service was friendly and the rooms were large. The location by the river is very beautiful. The facilities are a bit dated and grungy for the price point. The onsens were not available due to a heavy rain unfortunately.
- Teodora (10/5): Exceptional - Very well located. Close to hiking routes. Very good dinner and breakfast.
- Ina (10/5): Loved it! - Amazing dinner, helpful, accommodating and very friendly staff, great onsen, ping pong table The futon beds were a bit hard
- Jennifer (10/5): Beautiful river front property - Beautiful property on the Oto River, very serene. Friendly, helpful staff - so helpful that when the bus we were supposed to leave on was full, staff member drove us! We were extremely grateful. Love Japanese people. 😍 Nothing.
- Diane (9/5): Superb - The staff were great. The set meals were very good breakfast and dinner. a mix of Japamese and some western.. The room was traditional Japanese with futons . It was a good sized room and comfortable. The location fabulous.overlooking the river. The hot springs were great by the river bubbling up through the rocks.Ther hotel supplied maps and a shuttle bus to the beginingng of on spectacular and manageable 7km of Kumano trail. There were
also regular local buses from Hongu to hotel .The hotel also ran a shuttle bus from Hongu to hotel at set times if you rang them. A great 2 days.
Diane and Phil Australia
- Marianne (8/5): Great place to stay when exploring the beautiful Kumano Kodo. Clean and comfortable with nice food. - Lovely room with western beds and outdoor bath Nothing
- Catherine (7/5): Loved how prepared the hotel was to give us a brilliant onsen experience. - It was amazing, good service and a variety of Japanese cuisine. There was no coffee in the rooms
- Aaron (5/5): 4-star hotel prices for a crusty old hostel experience - The only good part was the food experience, which had friendly staff and was generally well executed. We paid for a room with a private bathroom and onsen-style soaking tub. It cost more than our 4 star hotel in Tokyo and the room was crusty, worn out, and deteriorating. Stains on the walls and furniture and broken fixtures that made it feel like an old college dorm room. The hallways and facility are ragged and moldy as well. Looks like it hasn’t been updated or painted in about 30 years. Definitely NOT worth the price! The smell is bad throughout hotel.
The hotel has a great location and could be wonderful but the owners seems to be nickel and diming to cut costs. Felt like 1 step above a hostel with luxury hotel prices. The staff was weird and unhelpful. Seemed annoyed almost that we were there. Perhaps they were working at a hotel in an exchange program and didn’t really understand how hotel service worked? Poorly trained and managed for sure.
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
- Chiaki (7/5): Good - I know me and my sister were the only Japanese guests on that day. A lady who served us dinner told us. As Japanese, I missed all the greetings from the staff. The lady who served us dinner and breakfast was nice, but at the front desk, I felt "friendliness" was missing. I think the ryokan now serve many people from other countries who don't know much about Ryokan, but Japanese people know how we are served. That's something I felt it was missing and Fujiya probably is the best Ryokan in that area.
- Helena (9/5): Superb - Fantastic food. Loved dinner and breakfast. The staff were lovely and super helpful. Dig your own river onsen for an al fresco soak.
- Sachi (8/5): Beautiful River Hot Springs - Location & Onsen
- Alison (9/5): Beautiful location, excellent food, very comfortable room - Nothing
- Bezzybee (9/5): Awesome Stay by the Hot Spring River - Located just across the river with hot spring. You could soak your feet in the river water. The hotel provide slipper for the river walk.
Food were yummy. Places of interest like the Kumano Honggu walk are within a 10 mins car drive to the mid starting point. You could follow the hotel shuttle bus to the car park and then the bus will fetch you to the starting point where you hike your way back to where you park your car. The walk is about 7km.
- Pauline (7/5): Wordless - The location, the staff in Restaurant. The staffs in reception desk are not helpful.
- Robert (8/5): Very good -
- Seow (8/5): Very good -
- Ngocdiep (10/5): Exceptional - Friendly staff
Good location Bathroom is dated
- Martin (9/5): Superb -
- Kai (5/5): This hotel has the potential to be so good if the general upkeep is improved. - The In-Room Onsen was nice you could either soak your full body or just soak your feet. The rooms were spacious. Dinner was pretty good and the view from the room was directly looking onto the Oto River. Don't let the photos on booking websites fool you. They were taken when reno's were probably first completed so, rely on the more up-to-date photos of travelers posting reviews. Upkeep and attention to detail is a bit lacking. Lamps have cobwebs all the way down them. One of our family members was staying in the standard rooms, and the vents along the ceiling had a lot of cobwebs (Seems like the vents need some cleaning), generally, there were stains on the carpets here and there, some cracked glass above an elevator entrance (potential hazard), a plant that completely dead and brown beside the elevator, in general, needs some additional care and maintenance. My only gripe is that they don't clean the filters on their hair dryers so the airflow is weak. I personally cleaned the one in our room, and magic, good as new. Cleaners should really improve their attention to detail.
- Stephen (8/5): Very good -
- Stella (8/5): Very good - Good to have shuttle from hotel to Hongu Taishai then to Hosshinmon-oji
- Rosallie (10/5): - I love the onsen beside the river
