The location in Stone Town is ideal—everything is within walking distance, from local markets to historical sites. It made exploring the area incredibly easy and enjoyable.
The room was clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully decorated with authentic details that really added to the experience. The staff were exceptionally friendly and always ready to help with a smile, which made the stay even more pleasant.
One of the highlights was the rooftop restaurant—the ambiance was amazing, especially in the evening, and the food was delicious.

- 976sarai (10/5): Best seafood - This was our best meal on our trip to Zanzibar.
The waiters Kalista and Ismail where so sweet and welcoming. They served us with big smiles, their special coconut crab soup, seafood platter for 2 and a sharing cheesecake for desert.
Would recommend this 10/10 from two seafood lovers!
But a little warning, you have to have a great food stomach because there is a lot of it.

- awatifs2026 (10/5): Home away from home - From the time you step into the hotel, you get that zanzibar heritage feel. Clean cosy value for money rooms. The staff r friendly always simling and ready to assist. Tumaini at the front desk tool.us through a smooth check in process. The house keeping ladies who.made sure r room was always clean. Kalista and said at the restaurant made sure we were provided quick and top notch service. Chef Keith pampered us with some local dishes and made sure my Little one was taken care with all his requests. A big thank you to the entire team for a warm, welcoming hospitality and a memorable stay. Highly recommended.
- abubakars608 (10/5): A serene experience - My recent stay at spice tree was nothing short of extraordinary. Kind, warm and friendly hospitality. Amazing and helpful service staff at tarab restaurant. Executive chef Keith visiting the table and making sure everything was perfect was a nice touch. Will definitely visit again soon.
- robertsO971YZ (10/5): Dinner at Tribute Restaurant - Kalista & Saidi served us a delitious dinner
- GastronomeAdventurer (10/5): Excellent Hotel in the middle of Stone Town - Slightly delayed review....
This is my favourite hotel in Stone and the second time I've stayed here with a group. It is by far, the best value for money in terms of what it offers for the cost and compared to other hotels in it's category; I know this because I researched extensively. The rooms are both practical and beautifully decorated. The location is absolutely perfect, in proximity to all Stone Town's attractions. The food in their rooftop restaurant is sublime.
But perhaps best of all, is the service. We were a film crew of almost 40 people and I am still amazed at the kindness, patience, professionalism and efficiency of literally every single staff-member at the hotel. From the GM to the security guard. There is clearly a standard that's being adhered to and if they could adhere to it with our noisy, demanding group then it means they are the real deal.
I'm so thankful to every person at The Turuco Spice Tree Hotel and highly recommend a stay here whether for business or holiday. You won't be sorry!
- 400lloyda (8/5): A solid option :) - Good location in Stone Town near the waterfront with a myriad of small streets, shops, and restaurants to explore. Rooms are a good size and clean with some local decorative touches but maybe lack a little ambience. Pleasant roof top restaurant, breakfast was OK, the tagine for dinner was excellent. Service was good. Probably about right in terms of value for money.
- 853fadhilm (10/5): Great food, excellent service, wonderful stay - Beautifully decorated room, very clean and comfortable.staff are very attentive.highlight of the stay was the food and service. Had two meals in taarab restaurant and must say chef Keith and team provided excellent fresh food with a local touch. Special shout out to kalista for recommending dishes and drinks. Highly recommended
- Ulf (10/5): - The personnel is exceptional! So many nice smiles and positive energy! I don’t know yet if this distinguishes the hotel or the entire island, but it was remarkable.
The food at breakfast and in the restaurant was truly perfect! Excellent mix of local tastes with international standard food mix.
Beds just perfect! We had an outstanding stay in this hotel All was great
- Unathi (8/5): Comfortable, great hospitality and welcoming staff. - The styling of it, the furniture its beautiful Just that mouldy smell as if there carpets before
- Cassidy (8/5): -
- BENEDICT-MICHAEL (8/5): -

- Philipp (10/5): -
- Alunala (8/5): -
- BRIAN (9/5): -
- Shireen (7/5): -
- Laura (9/5): Wonderful location! - Location was excellent, staff were wonderful, rooms nice and spacious and nicely decorated. Restaurant amazing with a lovey terrace with views over the rooftops. The dinner menu was incredible though - we ate there three times!! We had breakfast on one of the mornings and have to say we’ve had better so we had breakfast elsewhere for the other two days. The rooms smelt slightly damp but I think that is a general issue in the town
- Bodor (9/5): -
- Diane (10/5): Beautiful hotel and staff very helpful - Service, great and comfortable room, great breakfast and near to beach and right in the center of town. Nothing
- Kopalande (10/5): It was very good overall - It’s clean and very nice Just the tv you can’t watch soccer
- 923alexeyn (10/5): Wonderful Stay at Turaco Spice Tree. Exceptional Service and Delicious Dining - Thank you very much for a wonderful stay at Turaco Spice Tree.
I truly enjoyed the atmosphere of the hotel, and the restaurant was an absolute highlight, great food and a very pleasant experience overall.
I would especially like to recognize Kalista and Francis for their friendliness and professionalism. Their warm attitude and attentive service really made a difference and made our stay even more enjoyable.
I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Zanzibar and would be happy to return again.
- 280safiay (10/5): Food and service - The food was exquisite and the service was on point, was served by Kalista and she was simply amazing throughout. Definitely recommend
- Happiness57003837283 (10/5): Serving Finesse - Lovely ambience, great service, amazing food prepared by Chef Alex. He takes time to curate each and every meal to the guest's liking. He serves dessert with a special message for each guest 😊
- kashgo (8/5): Location - We were happy staying here as it was close to everything and not on the beach. The beach can be loud and noisy and we preferred staying a few blocks away which this hotel fulfilled. The room was fine. The staff were friendly. However dinner service on the restaurant upstairs was awfully slow. We were on the verge of walking out but glad we stayed as the food was good. Breakfast service however was excellent especially the eggs made to order and the big buffet spread. The hotel is in an old typical Zanzibar building with small alleys around it but extremely safe outside. You could however get lost navigating those alleys. Close and walkinng distance to everything to see in Stone town
- shahad_a988 (10/5): Great experience! - Great location, very friendly staff, beautiful atmosphere, rooms are very clean, good value for money, and service is excellent.
- Fabrice (8/5): - Bon hotel bien placé et avec excellent petit dejeuner sur la terrasse. Prix un peu elevé sans piscine. Ras
- Wendi (7/5): - Helpfull staff Facilities and indoor pool. No view
- EricE2148 (8/5): Worthwhile experience closest to all key viewing places - A welcomed experience food great best chel Alex and restaurant manager Paul our food experience with the octopus and seafood platter could have been 100% unfortunately the crab was disappointing
- Aleesha (9/5): Worth it. - Excellent location! Everything about Spice Tree was great- good breakfast, clean rooms and friendly staff.
- N9439KZbretth (8/5): Great location, friendly staff, decent hotel - Great location in the heart of Stonetown, friendly staff, and decent facilities. Restaurants and bars are all close by with plenty to see on the shoreline. Also, there was no shortage of activities available close by. The hotel itself is a little dated (ie: old TV with no streaming) but overall we enjoyed our stay here
- 378margretm (10/5): Chef Alex for his excellent work — truly a memorable dinner! - We had dinner today at Spice Tree by Turaco and it was a wonderful experience. Chef Alex prepared a delicious crab soup that was simply outstanding, followed by a flavorful seafood curry that we really enjoyed. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, which made the evening even better.
A big thanks to Chef Alex for his excellent work — truly a memorable dinner!
- Khawla (9/5): It is a family resort and having a small grocery store with the necessary items is important - The beach front, staff , and restaurants The waiting time at the elevators
- Alyaqdhan (9/5): -
- Martín (7/5): - - Servicio, lo mejor
- Limpieza
- NaliniN7 (8/5): Top location, service & meals - Well kept and clean hotel with high standard of service & food. There is a currency exchange around the corner & Freddie Mercury museum a few minutes walk away as well as the sea side. an easy walk to shops including a few concept stores plus a lot of tanzanite shops.I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here.
- samie (10/5): Great Stay, lovely staff and everything needed in a room - Great stay. Rooms were beautiful and cosy. Easy access on the ground floor. I would recommend staff to get some extra security for rooms on ground floor. The windows can sometimes be left open by the cleaners and since its ground floor, passers on the streets can easily access the room. I am of course, assuming this was an oversight and not intentional but I am mentioning here for feedback.
- Z7367QXayoube (10/5): Amazing !!! - I had a wonderful stay at Spice Tree by Turaco! The location is perfect for exploring Stone Town, and the rooftop breakfast with a sea view was a real highlight. The staff were friendly and always ready to help. Rooms were clean and comfortable — I’d definitely come back!
- imiman (10/5): Family trip - Great hotel fast room keeping very clean, comfortable and quiet room, in the middle of stone village very close to all souvenir shops and walking distance to the beach fronts with all the restaurants, smiling and friendly staff, we enjoyed our stay and would recommend
- Luis2funes (8/5): -
- Wilson Castigo Alexandre Macate (10/5): - Apesar de terem cancelado a minha reserva por engano, Hotel resolveu essa situação de imediato.
A limpeza, localização, breakfast fenomenal. Atendimento do pessoal tbem é fenomenal.
- Abdi (8/5): Grateful - Diverse and healthy.
- SalimCanada (10/5): A great stay in Stone Town Zanzibar - Arrived at 9pm and was checked in with utmost efficiency. Seen the welcome plate in my room. Spacious room and a very good roof top restaurant.
The front office staff were very courteous and so were the security, housekeeping and the restaurant staff.
- Jani (9/5): - Excellent location, nice staff.
- Jeffrey (10/5): - Great location, friendly staff, quiet room and comfortable beds
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The staff was very helpful and attentive. The room was spacious, functionnal, modern and yet had character. Location was excellent, near main sites.
- Nina (8/5): -
- 398karlai (10/5): A Fantastic Stay – Delicious Food, Impeccable Service, and Spotless Rooms! - I had an absolutely wonderful experience at Spice Tree. From the moment I arrived, the team made me feel genuinely welcome. Service was exceptional — every staff member was attentive, friendly and went above and beyond to ensure my comfort
- Tiina (2/5): A complete disappointment with mold, cockroaches, and poor Wi-Fi - Location. There is nothing else positive to say about this hotel. The hotel's Wi-Fi worked very poorly, and only on one day of ten the connection was more or less functional. The hotel has a really bad mold problem, and in the room I was staying in, for example, the smell of mold was really bad and caused me symptoms. Most days, there were no clean towels in the room, and I had to ask for them separately. Breakfast was overpriced, and often some of the items were already gone by the time I got there. The hotel management was very unfriendly and rude, and they wouldn't let me change a hotel even though everything went wrong at this hotel. On top of everything else, there are cockroaches in the hotel. Four stars have nothing to do with this hotel! Ten days at this hotel was the worst hotel experience of my life.
- solocationer (10/5): overall great - When you arrive make sure you follow the signs to find the hotel entrance. The staff were all very nice (especially Rose in housekeeping and the chef), but make sure to get the wifi password from reception. The room was large, but the bed was old and the mattress rolls you into the middle. The room service food was good, especially the cheese & tomato sandwich, but twice my order was incorrect. One time I ordered water and didn't get it, and the other time I ordered a continental breakfast and got the other breakfast other option. Make sure you turn the a/c on when you enter the room. There is a currency exchange and a bank very close by, near the old fort, and lots of restaurants, shops, and the ocean all very close by. Despite the room service mishaps I would absolutely recommend this hotel.
- Maricole (9/5): Superb -
- Broan (3/5): Get rid of the roaches & and paper codes internet - Not so nice Supposed to be a 4-5 star hotel
It was more like 2 star
Very expensive to for what it is
Totally not worth it
- Pierre (7/5): Good hotel in the center of Stone Town with nice neighberhood - I like the location of the hotel, it was easy to move in Stone Town, there is a lot of very good restaurant close by the hotel. We looked the final Tottenham - Manchester United in the little garden with a Chicha, it was nice. The bed and the room are good. There is some cockroachs in the hotel. I killed 2 cockroachs in two differents days, and i saw 3 of them.
- maimonarahman (10/5): Warm and Welcoming Stay at Spice Tree by Turaco - Our family had the pleasure of staying at Spice Tree by Turaco in Stone Town last December. Set right in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the hotel offers a unique charm that blends the rich history of Stone Town with modern comforts. The hospitality we received throughout our stay was warm, personable, and genuine. It made us feel right at home.
The staff was always ready with a smile! And we love those cookies.
The ambiance of the hotel reflects the Swahili culture, a peaceful and inviting atmosphere that was relaxing after a day of exploring the town.
We didn’t feel like tourists here. It felt more like a return home, thank you to the manager, Mohamed. We would say he would be the reason why we look forward to being welcomed back when we next visit to Stone Town.
If you're looking for a friendly hotel with that personal touch, stay at Spice Tree by Turaco!
- Maitham (10/5): Exceptional -
- deidraannv (10/5): Top Notch Chef!! - Gorgeous Boutique Hotel.. Room was spacious and beautiful. Pay close attention to the details in the room, they play a significant role in the history and culture of ZNZ.
Front Desk Representatives at check-in were friendly.
The warm cookie at check-in was delicious :)
Food was incredible. I loved that some the local Tanzanian dishes were in were incorporated into the menu. Freshly squeezed juices paired well with our meals ( Hibiscus Ginger and the Soursop Ginger was Top Tier)
I Rate this place 5 Stars only because of Chef Alex and his hospitality. Exemplary customer service skills from the beginning of our stay until the very end. A true leader and an asset to the Turaco Brand!!
Chef Alex turned a couple of not so good situations into positive. He took the time to listen, he paid attention to the small details that mattered, last but not least... he displayed empathy.
Chef Alex, Thank You for your kindness . You and your staff are Greatly Appreciated.
Until we meet Again!
- L6660ZXandrec (10/5): Feedback on the services. - The Hotel infrastructure, services and employees are very well prepared and Kind.
I had a very pleasant experience and look forward to returning to Zanzibar and stay in Spice 3 by Turaco.
I really recommend for the quality in service and the delicious cookies offered in the reception.
- I1055RPhassana (10/5): Truly worth it - We have enjoyed our stay the hotel it was really amazing experience with friends the staff was friendly and always ready to assist breakfast at the terrace with full variety cleaniness was beyond the expectations definitely we shall return back
- Talha (9/5): Comfortable stay and staff made it even better - Excellent location
- Leon (8/5): - Stone Town!
- Junghun (10/5): Exceptional -
- amaraj2020 (10/5): Very safe hotel with good amenities and optional tours - Great, safe environment. I (28F) was travelling with my mother and felt extremely safe in and around this hotel. The staff were lovely (reception, restaurant and security). There is 24/7 security and reception staff. The rooms were clean and have good beds and bathrooms. Only a few minutes walk from the beach, markets and restaurants. They have a pool, spa/massage places and tour guides that can take you anywhere.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Avoid avoid avoid - Its only good.for its location and thats it.
I dont understand how its a 4 star.
The place is badly run with what appears almost to be student's and its a Marriot. The whole place needs a refurb. The icing on the cake was the draggjng of the heavy furniture for 2 nights out of our 3. The noise disruption was so bad and kept us awake. We can only assume as we were on the 4th floor and the 5th floor has the restaurant come bar it was that. But that closes at 10pm and the nois for the 2 nights continued to 4am. Not constant but loud crashes. Plus the house keeping staff shout early morning and bang the doors too. So if you want any sleep you wont get it. Aircon also does nt work properly
- mcgringo (2/5): Avoid if you want to sleep - I'm not sure how this is a 4 star Hotel.
It's clean and the location is good but that's about it. We unfortunately stayed 3 nights, of which 2 consisted of people dragging heavy furniture which we assume was above us on the 5th floor(the cafe)
There's better around for the price paid. What's more it claims to be a marriot. Its needs a complete overhaul. Out dated, aircon didn't work properly, everything was wrong.Avoid
- Karl (8/5): Comfortabel hotel - we had to change our booking for Zanzibar and so we came to this hotel. THe hotel is very clean and the staff is very polite and helpfull. The breakfast on the rooftop is good. The price for this hotel is a little high, but Zanzibar became very touristic
- dangX1703SN (10/5): Excellent stay in the Spice Tree in Stone Town, Zanzibar - Just spent three excellent nights in the Spice Tree in Stone Town, Zanzibar. The hotel rooms were excellent and the food equally as good. The hotel was very clean and just off the main area, meaning it was a little secluded haven that was a five-minute walk to the main part of town and beach. We were able to walk everywhere, which made things very easy. There were also some good excursions to be had and they could organise airport pick-ups and drop-offs.
Highly recommended and thank you very a great stay Dan & Anne
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Excellent location and overall great service. A few things can be improved given the price.
- Breakfast is very bland and could use improvement—fresher breads (ideally baked daily), ripe fruit (two days I was there, the fruit served wasn't ripe), better training of the chef who makes omelets; they were often overcooked; have an option for adding cheese to the omelets which wasn't available. For $17, the breakfast was wanting.
- The room was musty, likely related to the high humidity environment and the fact that they don't keep AC throughout. Investing in baseline AC could improve this.
- Attention to detail in the room service, e.g, shampoo ran out and I had to ask for it despite daily service.
Otherwise excellent hotel.

- O6467YAdonnaf (6/5): Unpleasant experience at front desk. - Nice hotel but front desk help is not friendly. Service at the restaurant and bar is very slow. In addition, we had a misunderstanding with our reservation, thought we modified it but the same lady that kept our friends' passports until she went back down to the front desk to ask for them did not modify our reservation thus charging me for an extra night and blamed me for the mistake...have loved Marriot Hotels but this experience will make me look elsewhere in the future when traveling.
- Stella (10/5): - We enjoyed our stay at the Spice Tree Hotel. The staff was helpful and friendly and the rooms were nice. The location was great for exploring StoneTown and the staff also offered great recommendations. We had a great stay!
- Soraya (5/5): Not a 4* hotel and very expensive for the experience. - Location and staff. Staff is incredibly nice, competent and helpful. Very nice rooftop, garden. It should actually be more advertised and be used more as an entertainment area for the guests. Spice tree was honestly a disappointment. The hotel needs to urgently do a renovation to take care of the humidity in the facilities. The entire hotel smells humidity. The humidity was so much that at night the linens were damp. We had taken a twin room and the beds were so old and used that they had holes in the middle making sleeping like mission impossible. I reported this to reception who despite all the good attitude were not able to assist. Linens somehow looked like they were not changed. The only reason I did not change hotels was just because it was a really short stay, but honestly this is not a 4* star standard more like a 3 star standard. While the team did offer the option of changing rooms that was a second change and I was unwilling to move again, hence I decided to stay. The curtains were actually clearly dirty.
My last comment is more like a personal taste - the hotel decoration makes it heavy with the dark colours. Because some places lack natural light - specially common areas - the dark decoration makes the hotel somehow have a sensation of abandoned, which combined with humidity and the smell makes it worst. A lighter colour decoration can help the hotel to look softer and give its due credit as this is not a bad/awful place.
