Guest Reviews
- Andy (9/5): Great stay no issues will return - Great location , great staff quality food dog friendly comfortable rooms Breakfast could have bed. Better
- Pam (8/5): Enjoyed our stay. Everyone friendly. Room comfortable - Good location. Lovely view. Bathroom had shelf for toilet bag. Wardrobe. Except breakfast We wanted to book for dinner in advance but were told no dinner provided on Mondays. They recommended a restaurant 7 miles away which we booked. Then when we arrived they said they were doing meals after all.
- judith anne (9/5): Lovely stay really enjoyed it hopefully be back - Location brilliant fruit would be a nice addition to breakfast
- Pamela (4/5): Very poor experience such a shame - Lovely area with great views Uncomfortable bed room very basic for price. Waited over an hour in the restaurant for food finally arrived just warm!
Breakfast was appallingly bad such a shame but definitely would not return
- tim (9/5): Great stay in great location - Excellent room overlooking harbour above friendly and lively pub with excellent food Only that the restaurant is closed on a Monday
- Janet (9/5): A wonderful little gem, that we’ll visit again. - Location and view across the little harbour was just the ticket for a relaxing weekend.
Staff were all fantastic and made our little dog very welcome. Food was delicious. Nothing really, other than it would have been nice to have a cooked breakfast option. But the continental breakfast was very good.
- Jacqui (8/5): Fantastic views, great staff, great food, brilliant beer! - Beautiful location. Staff all really friendly and the food was excellent. Great selection of beers on tap! You could hear people downstairs in the bar. It wasn’t raucous at all, just people chatting loudly but a bit distracting.
- Pat (8/5): -
- Peter (8/5): Great room, shame about the hospitality. - The room itself was great - overlooking the harbour and very comfortable. It was reasonably priced an the staff were nice. There was no indication before we arrived that the pub wasn't doing food, so we had to drive back out to a local town for fish and chips in the car. It would have been much better if this had been explicit, either on Booking.com or on the pub website. The room was good, but the pub not so much.
- david (9/5): - Location and staff Nothing
- Alister (1/5): No stay because we had to cancel , yet card payment still not cancelled and money returned. - Cancelled booking but still no refund ! As above, terrible.
- Audrey (8/5): -
- Philip (9/5): -
- JAMES (9/5): -
- Michael (9/5): A thoroughly relaxing pre Christmas stay. - Food was excellent both the bar menu and the restaurant menu.
View from the room was superb.
Nice relaxing stay all round.
Staff were all pleasant and helpful. No complaints, we had a great stay.
- caroline (8/5): -
- Tracy (8/5): A place to call your own when not at home. - The location was prime for our needs. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The rooms adequate for our requirements. Only criticism is the breakfast. A continental breakfast was provided where we would have enjoyed a full Scottish. The continental was sparse.
- Alison (6/5): Beautiful location but total lack of anywhere to eat when restaurant closed. Room was good and view lovely over harbour - Nice room and great view Restaurant closed and didn’t find out until after had paid non-refundable £135 for room!
Had to drive 30 min to pub in Garlieston as no food available nearer than that.
- Stuart (6/5): Lovely place ,great food , dog friendly but very bad timing . - Position. Views food room . Room 6 the door did not lock . It was opposite the ladies toilets . Our stay coincided with a 40th birthday party . So we were kept up until late .with noise and then a fight broke out under our window .
- Beattie (10/5): -
- Stephen (5/5): Fine for a short work stay, but not for a leisure break. Pictures look better than it actually is. - Evening meal Breakfast Basic. Coffee was one cup not a pot. No atmosphere. Fittings in room very old fashioned, room was cold. Bathroom freezing. Electric fan heater in Bathroom wall, wouldn't say it was up to code.
- Jan (8/5): Enjoyed - Quaint and friendly The toilet seat… cheap flimsy plastic
- Kayley (10/5): - The location was perfect, food was incredible and the staff were lovely. Wish there was a full English option for breakfast
- Janet (8/5): Enjoyable stay, pleasant staff, good location. Good meal in the restaurant and cosy bar. - Nice room with a view over the harbour. Good restaurant with good menu and good food. Noisy until 12.10. Expected quiet after 11pm.
The door to the bar was left open so noise travelled.
- Keith (2/5): Very disappointed on a Special Birthday Trip - Dinner was good, although menu depleted by 8 pm. The bar served a very good selection of real ales, most from the local brewery. Parking was convenient, free public spaces by harbour. Breakfast could be seriously improved. Breakfast was Continental buffet, and poor as well. No pot of tea or coffee, just a cup on request. No toaster, on request only. Poor choice of cereals - only 3 provided. Poor sweet pastries. No rolls, no croissants, no brown/wholemeal bread. Only one sliced cheese. Juices in opaque jugs, so difficult to see which was which. Only one member of staff covering everything at this time of day. Photo of full buffet table attached.
Most importantly our room was not checked properly in advance of arrival. We had a broken and jammed window in the bathroom, and a jammed window in the bedroom. Cold wind through night. Bathroom very dated, and no heating provision. Electrical services very dangerous. We had two 4-gang extension leads serving lights, kettle unit, and television plus our own USB charging adaptors. No USB sockets provided. Our complaints were headed, and attempts made to rectify, although because of the state of repair of the windows, apologies were made and accepted, and a significant refund was paid.
- Donna (7/5): Will return as the location has a sentimental draw and the rooms are nice and comfortable, evening meal very good but a - The location and the staff and food It’s costly for the an overnight with a very sparing continental breakfast. Bread, one cheese, couple meats, rice crispies or Cheerios, dairy yogurts and mini pastries and bagels. No option of toast.
Stayed here many times previously and enjoyed a delicious hot breakfast which I highly rated. Options of eggs, kippers, full Scottish breakfast.
- helen (9/5): - Cosy friendly
- Jo (8/5): It’s a lovely place to stay with an excellent restaurant and bar with a fantastic selection of ales. - I love the location Breakfast was disappointing. I was hoping for a full Scottish breakfast or some cooked food options, which I’m sure has been on offer in the past.
- Rebecca (4/5): Dismal breakfast and nearest hot food for dinner is miles away. - Lovely location and room was nice especially the bathroom. Room was nice and I loved the harbourside location, but all totally let down by the dismal breakfast and total lack of hot food for dinner. TBH, it comes across as if the owners are more interested in the beer from the brewery they also own with the rooms being just extra income with minimal effort.
As a solo traveller I wanted a hotel with a restaurant so I could have wine with dinner. Within minutes of booking I received an email telling me about their restaurant and advising me to book a table in advance... followed by the details it was closed for my stay. Middle of the school summer holidays which you would expect to be main tourist time but whatever. I then checked twelve websites going further afield only to discover nowhere in the area does hot food for dinner for several days a week (I was advised by a local that I'd need to drive to Stranraer). Booking made so I had to admit defeat and accept I'd have no evening meal. The worst thing is that the hotel still takes bookings for those days despite knowing this.
It mentioned a 'superb' breakfast when I made the booking. It turned out to be Continental (another guest said they used to serve a lovely cooked breakfast). Basic choice of food made worse e.g. there was a single croissant while the uncovered cooked meats & cheese had flies on them. I was offered toast (warm food!) so asked for white only to be told there was one type of bread only with no choice. I have a serious allergy so asked if the bread was seeded but the waitress wasn't sure and said she was unable to check. They can't even be bothered to know what is in the food they serve! I only went to breakfast on the second morning because I was so hungry after no dinner the previous night. It was a little better e.g. there was some Greek yoghurt, a pile of croissants and some grapefruit segments but the coffee was over stewed and bitter.
- Simon (10/5): Stay here! - Everything. Beer was excellent, the food would have to be ranked as one of the best meals I have ever eaten and the location was great. Only stayed one night and not more.
- Edwin (9/5): -
- Isabel (7/5): An inn with majorly contrasting features - Excellent bar with vast choice of decent quality beer and other alcohol. Amazing restaurant and chef for delicious evening meals. Good atmosphere (especially on Saturday night with the live entertainment!) Great location (sea view however, totally tide dependent!). Peaceful and quiet at night (once bar closed of course!) Room 3 comfortable enough room but in need of a refurb! E.g. Paint peeling off wall and bed so ridiculously soft and uncomfortable that my husband chose to sleep on the floor! Breakfast appalling - stale bread every morning - rationed also - it ran out Tuesday morning and a disgruntled young member of the kitchen staff had to go and find some more, which was also stale! Really poor quality and such a pity as it majorly lets down this lovely inn and makes it poor value for money
- Giles Dearden (9/5): Great location. Superb evening meal. Altogether a great stay - thank you. - Great location on the harbour. Welcoming staff & help with bike storage. A truly superb evening meal and a huge range of specialist beers on tap too.
- Amanda (8/5): - Fabulous location, friendly staff and great restaurant with lovely beer Pity about the breakfast with so much great Scottish produce locally as demonstrated by the fantastic dinners, it was disappointing to be offered rice crispies, salami, croissants etc.
- Catriona (9/5): -
- Martin (8/5): -
- Loraine (9/5): -
- Neil (7/5): Very enjoyable despite the breakfast - The room and the view were excellent The breakfast was poor. Is it not possible to provide a cafetiere or pot of coffee rather than just a cup. The continental breakfast was disappointing: juice watered down, pastries unappetising.
- John (8/5): Stunning location. - Stunning location with a seafront view. Friendly & welcoming staff/owners. Breakfast was continental and ok - we always prefer a full Scottish as a treat when away for a few days but we knew upfront that wasn't an option so no complaints. The idyllic location & view made up for that.
- simon (8/5): nice location great rooms and friendly service -
- Suzann (10/5): Had a lovely night stay here travelled around the surrounding area which is beautiful . - Just a lovely gem of a place . The staff are ALL so lovely . Nothing was a bother .The food was really good and any requests eg for smaller portions etc was no problem . Excellent views and comfortable rooms .Will definitely go back . Nothing 😊
- Linda (5/5): - The room was large and clean with a good view of the harbour. Breakfast was rather limited. We decided to stay at this pub as we were seeing a show at a nearby theatre and I rang them beforehand to warn that we would be arriving late in the evening and was told that would be fine as it was a bank holiday so the pub would be busy. When we arrived at about 9:30pm it was deserted and the only member of staff was clearing up and about to leave! She would only serve us with drinks if we took them straight to the room as she was closing the bar. Not the best of welcomes!
- Diane (7/5): A nice place but the bed was very uncomfortable - The location of this inn was second to none! The evening meal was delicious and can highly recommend. The staff were very friendly and efficient and made our stay. The furnishings are poor and there is evidence of damp on the walls in the bedroom and bathroom. The bed was very soft and uncomfortable. It was a long night!
- Elaine Lindsay (6/5): - The comfy bed Not told before arriving that there was no food available on a Monday or Tuesday evening, had to go 7 miles away for food after a travelling for 7hrs
- Martin (7/5): Good - lovely comfortable hotel wiht decent sized rooms. We have stayed here several times over the yeas. Dissapointing to see that they no longer serve lunch, at least not on the day we visited. The evening meals were also not as good as previous.
- Patricia (9/5): Great place to stay - Location , staff and good food Breakfast needs improvement
- Kaderali (9/5): Superb - The original dinner menu 3 years ago was better.
- Julie (10/5): Exceptional - Friendly staff, great location, dog friendly. Nothing we didn't like.
- Sheena (8/5): Very good - Uncovered food at breakfast and a lot of flies in the room.
- Pam (10/5): Brilliant stay in a hidden gem - Everything at this inn was fantastic. We knew in advance that the restaurant was closed so were prepared for a walk out to find our evening meal, they were offering tapas in the bar and so we decided to risk it... it was delicious and combined with the locally brewed beers and the busy bar led to a fab evening. The room overlooked the harbour so my little dog and i spent a couple of hours just watching the boats and the wildlife in the bay. The bed was a bit soft for my taste like a feather nest..once you were in getting out was a challenge.
- Jane (9/5): Enjoyed my stay. It was very comfortable. Room very nice with a lovely outlook. Food good. - Breakfast was adequate.
- Louise (8/5): Really comfortable, helpful staff, peaceful location - Great location, wonderful view from room, comfortable chairs in the room to appreciate the harbour activity No problems
- Ian (8/5): Very good -
- Caroline (9/5): Lovely pet friendly stay - Staff are wonderful. Room generous size and lovely harbour view. Food was mixed.
- Roger (9/5): Terrific Food in Comfortable Hotel in special setting - The quality of the dinner was top restaurant quality, absolutely amazing. Great location on the harbour front. The hotel is really comfortable with comfy beds, a good shower and a great bar. Breakfast was continental but fine. The fittings in the hotel have been clearly upgraded. The staff were great too. Thank you and we shall be back. Nothing. Some may prefer a full cooked breakfast, but we were okay.
- Colin (8/5): Very good -
- Fintan (7/5): Good -
- Martin (5/5): We have stayed at the Steam Packet many times over the past 20 years or and sorry to say that has lost its way in the fo - The Location Food offerings
- K (9/5): Superb -
- Essex (6/5): Pleasant - Lovely location The mattress was awful, a cooked breakfast would have been better.
- Keith (9/5): SWC 300 tour stopover - Lovely welcoming atmosphere when arriving. Comfortable bar and lounge with good selection of drinks. Room had great view of harbour. Booking.com says cooked breakfast every day but this is wrong. The proprietor only serves continental breakfast, which is very good. He has tried to change the listing.
- Pollyanne (8/5): Very good -
- Russell (8/5): Great place - Great location, nice pub, good staff Nothing
- David (7/5): One night stay - glorious weather sat overlooking harbor outside for a couple of hours. Great view from bedroom window. - Wonderful location No cooked breakfast😔
- Irina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paul (7/5): Good - Paide extra for a great room large room,, ,large comfortable bed , and clean. Room and bathroom lots of tea and instant coffee etc Says on room facilities, mini bar NO, coffee maker ,NO , the room rate was breakfast included.
Disappointing is the word ,if not just rubbish, especially on the Monday morning, as the main event was a stale hard bagel, and some stale Danish pastries, there was some wet ham and plastic cheese to go with the bagle ,no butter,no toast let alone a cooked breakfast , we weren't even told it would be a "continental breakfast , I presume because we had our dog with us at this "dog friendly inn " we were sent to eat alone in the bar and walk through 2 rooms and the entrance hall to collect our meager b/fast , on the Tuesday morning we were offered butter and toast after we asked for the butter
So I would not recommend staying at the Steam Packet Sunday or Monday nights as your breakfast will be "disappointing" a great shame as the rest of it was good ,oh except the pie I had for my dinner on the Sunday was not good ,the mash was nice
- Justyn (9/5): Superb -
- Arthur (8/5): Great for watching life at the harbour - Located at the harbour within a short walk of St Ninian’s Chapel. Comfortable room. Free sample of local beer. No evening meals are available on Mondays or Tuesdays
- Michael (7/5): Very good food, bar & service. - Food, staff, location Creaking floorboards & slamming doors
- Robert (10/5): Exceptional - Location perfect and very scenic next to harbour Everything ok
- Ines (7/5): Good -
- Adrian (10/5): Lovely place - Absolutely amazing view . Great beer on offer , no food on Monday and sties day but I had eaten I believe the food is amazing so will time it better next time. Continental breakfast was nice.
- Edwards (8/5): A lovely little find where we would be very happy to return to for a few days break. Thanks All! - Staff were great, very efficient and friendly, good knowledge of local area. nothing was too much trouble. The young girl on breakfasr service deserves a mention, she looked after us well and was knowledgeable about the area. Restaurant was lovely, food was great good menu and choices. Tasted Delicious. Loved the handmade chocs!!! Huge bonus that the dog was very welcomed not just tolerated. Spoiled with treats!!! Room was very clean and comfortable, bed bit soft for us but that is personal taste, didn't stop us relaxing and sleeping!!! Lovely great big bath, had wonderful soak after a day walking and sightseeing. lovely coastal walk only 5 mins away. The rooms in need of a little TLC but were still very clean and comfortable.
- Brown (10/5): Excellent - A little dispointing that the cooked breakfast wasn't available
- Elizabeth (9/5): Welcoming, comfortable place to to stay, with great views and lovely food. - Excellent food - we had a lovely evening meal and the continental breakfast the following day was comprehensive. They were able to offer a wide range of gluten-free options. The staff members were very friendly and helpful. Great views and a nice, clean room with a comfortable bed. No complaints, we had a grand stay!
- Ruth (9/5): Great evening menu and ales. Comfortable room. - Excellent food and real ale. Nice view. No cooked breakfast whilst we were there.
- Ben (10/5): Exceptional -
- Crawford (8/5): we will definitely visit again as the beds were amazing and the staff were fantastic - the staff and customers were very friendly. the bed was amazingly comfortable. no heating in the rooms when we arrived. staff did light the fire to heat the rooms, but radiator in bathroom did not heat.
- Neil (7/5): Good -
- Patrick (9/5): Superb - The location was lovely. Very quiet. Stress free. Easy access.
- Amy (10/5): Exceptional -

- Malcolm (8/5): charming harbour side Location , excellent real ale and the fresh sea food - the continental was excellent and was the local beer and the fish dinners .
- Vincent (10/5): Exceptional -
- Graham (9/5): Great stay, in a brilliant location, in a lovely little town. - The breakfast was staggering. I had the full breakfast - it was very big! The following day I had kippers, not as large, but still good. It was a little disappointing that some of the choices of food were not available.
- Steven (10/5): Great hotel with amazing views, food and beer. - Great rooms, friendly staff and fantastic location and food.

- Paula (7/5): Good -
- Adrian (7/5): Good -
- Paul (8/5): Beautiful location - Location and availability Nothing
- Mauriceblack56 (6/5): Expensive - The location. The score for this stay would have been slightly higher if the price reflected the experience.
This is ofcourse my own personal opinion, there are as you can see plenty of people disagree and are happy to pay the rate.
- Paul (10/5): a really great place to stay and would highly recommend to anyone visiting the area - This was a return visit for us and all good, helpful & friendly staff, amazing dinner and breakfast, quiet location with views over the harbour… we’re looking forward to our next visit to the area. No complaints at all, .
- John (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dave (9/5): Superb -
- Rona (10/5): A very enjoyable relaxing holiday being spoilt and came away refreshed. - The staff were all friendly, cheery and helpful. The breakfasts were excellent, plenty of choices. The food on the whole: lunches and evening meals were 5 star. Rooms were clean with plenty of space, overlooking a fabulous view of the harbour. We could have done with a rail to hold onto getting into the bath to shower.
- Robert (8/5): Very good -
- Jane (8/5): Relaxing break in a gorgeous area - Had breakfast and dinner, food was lovely with specials that changed each evening. Staff were great. The beer was excellent as expected. The views from our room were gorgeous. However, generally the room needed a bit of updating, and the bed wasn’t the best!
- David (10/5): Exceptional - We are a couple who have been travelling around the UK for over a month. Our stay in this hotel gave us the most enjoyable accommodation we have experienced. The staff were universally helpful and pleasant. The breakfast was superb. The bed was comfortable and the shower worked very well. There was nothing that we didn’t actually like but the hotel only provides evening meals five days a week
