Guest Reviews
- JONATHAN (10/5): - Good
- Fay (6/5): Great, responsive staff - Staff are lovely and responsive. Breakfast is great, as is the price. I reported a slow-draining shower after the first day, which was promptly resolved but housekeeping forgot to come that day. Funny smell in the room (fusty).
- Jenni (4/5): - Dont be fooled by the exquisite exterior: avoid booking a room here unless you dont mind a bedroom that was last decorated in the 1980s at best, a tired bathroom that has black mould on the windows, and a television that cannot be viewed from the bed. This alongside a very poor breakfast service: no fresh coffee or coffee machines, the hot food was luke warm, the orange juice was the cheap pre-frozen mix that requires diluting before service, and the atmosphere of a bus station cafe.
The phrase "simple accommodation" doesnt even get close.
- Suzanne Mary (10/5): - Fabulous hotel within easy reach of the city centre. Great for a large group staying as we were for our son's wedding. Breakfast abd evening bar meals excellent. Only complaint would be that the wifi was very patchy and we often had no signal
- john (10/5): - Great breakfast, clean rooms
- Carol (6/5): - The room was very basic, but fine for what was needed for an overnight
- Amber (8/5): - Beautiful property, friendly helpful staff. Room was a little smaller than expected but still perfectly adequate.
- Ashley (4/5): - The grounds and the facade of the building are excellent.
The rooms are quite sparse, bland and tatty but functional, in agreement with many other reviews I’d say they are more like student accommodation or nursing home rooms. With a small amount of time and money this could be improved by things like replacing of the grubby silicone. This is also true of the dining room and bar (the bar really is resembling a nursing home lounge and totally soulless).
I could overlook many of these issues to an extent if the service was good, unfortunately this was the main issue with our stay, staff were not unpleasant but looked like they were just there to do the bare minimum and not going out of their way to welcoming. Our first morning breakfast we were the only guests left in the dining hall, bizarrely the 3 staff present stood right next to our table, one even leaning on the chair next to myself and began a conversation amongst themselves discussing work related issues, after a while the older and presumably senior member suggested they move away from the guests, really this should never happen.
On our second morning breakfast, we arrived at 9am only to find most of the hot food items empty, on asking if these were being replenished we were told this was on its way, after 20 minutes some eventually came out but some items remained empty. This meant we were able to starting to eat at around 9.25. 9.30 on the dot the staff started clearing away around us.
- Amanda (10/5): - Beautiful hotel surrounded by amazing gardens and countryside. An absolute gem. Excellent breakfast too. I would definitely recommend.
- helen (10/5): Unexpected - Very friendly casual type of hotel with many visitors attending a conference .
Breakfast was outstanding and eaten on wooden tables in a panelled hall.
Rooms well equipped and clean.
Good value for money.
- Alan (8/5): - The Hall itself and the grounds are stunning.
- Jeffrey (10/5): Good value modern interior within tudor facade. - Large tower twin room with good view over gardens. Decent shower but very variable temperature. Replacement tv on desk not original walll mount gaveimited view. No evening hot food available at bar.
- Marie José (10/5): - Extremely beautiful historic premises. Will definitely visit again.
- Nicholas (10/5): - Convenience to Access funeral @Crematorium
- Anthony (10/5): Great place - Great place for an overnight stay or even longer if needed. Beautiful building a gardens.
- Peter (10/5): - Very impressive site as we turned into the drive. When we checked out the reception staff member gave us a great tip about not driving into Cambridge because of the extremely high parking costs. Instead they told us where the nearby Park & Ride was. A very convenient and very must less expensive transportation option that we wouldn't have known if not for her. We also enjoyed the buffet English breakfast, which was included in the rate. Finally, there was a beautiful walking path around the estate that we enjoyed.
- Jennifer (10/5): Felt special - Amazing hotel. Beautiful grounds. Staff were warm and welcoming. Room was in turret and was like a normal hotel room. It does not match exterior but still had a lovely stay. Breakfast was good, well cooked. I was so glad we stayed here. Lots of history on show. Would recommend and stay again. A short distant drive to centre about 8 mins but not a problem and the venue was worth the distance.
- John (10/5): - Excellent place to stay. Staff 1st class very quiet and easy to reach City centre by bus or car.
- Lorraine (10/5): - Lovely old building with character. Very peaceful. Our room was perfect, just the shower wasnt very good water flow.
- Esther (2/5): - Awful experience
- David (4/5): Rubbish hotel. - The hotel looks nothing like its pictures. Not clean and today no food and no hot water. Very upset and won’t be staying again have cancelled my next trip in Sept at my cost so not happy.
- donald (10/5): - This is a unique property reminds me of Hogwarts!!! Beautiful gardens, lovely cafe (pizza enough for two) breakfast is brilliant lots of options available
- Chuyuan (6/5): - Our recent stay at this location was good. The breakfast was excellent. Onsite staff were polite and helpful. The room was tidy. The building was beautiful inside and outside. The environment around the hall was beautiful. The drawbacks are : it requires your own vehicle to get access. The air smelled like some bull’s poop by the evening during our stay. I did not know what it could be. I had difficulty for my early checkout. I sent an email to the address as indicated on the information sheet. But I never got an reply.
- Tracey (10/5): Amazing location! - The most beautiful building and surroundings- excellent service at reception and during whole stay - breakfast was fresh and hot and served in the historic dining room. We enjoyed a lovely walk round the grounds and gardens which were lovely!
- Paul (10/5): - Lovely old building and grounds. Room and dining good, great buffet breakfast.
- Gary (10/5): Wow! - Best stay I have had anywhere this year.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Relaxing weekend - The hall and garden are fantastic, room was good, bathroom could do with updating, at 2pm left hanger on bedroom door to have room made up with fresh towels as placed used ones in bath as directed (as 3 day stay) only to have got new biscuits and coffee, no clean towels or bed made.
On the whole would stay here again as the staff are fantastic, friendly, helpful and food was brilliant 👌
- Anthony (10/5): Excellent location, fine hotel - Part of university, old charming building, friendly staff, amazing grounds with woods, grass and bushes. Bar served decent food, very quick
- Kim (8/5): - Madingley Hall is a quiet, relaxing location with beautiful grounds and parking on site. The staff were pleasant and helpful. My room was located on the ground floor facing the courtyard, so I had a lovely view, but on the negative side a path went right by the window so there was not much privacy. The room was clean and had everything you would need including a fridge, kettle, iron, ironing board, fan and a safe. The free WIFI wouldn’t work on the first night, despite assistance from the gentleman on reception, but thankfully worked for the rest of my stay. The TV signal wasn’t very good so a lot of the channels I normally watch at home had no signal, which was a little disappointing, but not the end of the world. The Bathroom was small and had not been designed particularly well as the heated towel rail had been put low down, so when your towels hung on it, they were right next to the toilet brush, which was not particularly hygienic. There was nowhere to hang a towel when you were in the shower, other than the back of the Bathroom door, so that wasn’t well thought out either. A couple of the areas of the Bathroom also needed attention, including both taps having a loose piece at the end of the spout, which resulted in water spraying out to the side, a broken light pull and the shower head could not be tilted. Breakfast was provided, but on the second day the plates were cold and most of the food was also on the cooler side. Despite a few issues, I would stay again.
- Martyn (10/5): Amazing historic building and location - Some of the rooms are a little tired and in need of some love and attention but it's worth putting up with that for all the positives about the property. And it's a good competitive price especially for Cambridge. We return and will contribute to return to this lovely historic building. And the people who complain about the condition of the rooms just 'need to get a life' :)
- Tsuyoshi (10/5): - Comfortable atmosphere!
- Julie (8/5): - As a B&B this is a good option. Lovely grounds and a great breakfast. It was not as quiet as I was expecting and there isn't much to do so less suitable for those travelling alone
- Ian (8/5): Away for work - This was a 1-night stay for work. The free car park is about a 5 minute walk. Rooms cannot be accessed before 4pm, but I was able to go into the cafe/bar and sit and do some work. Room was lovely if basic but still comfortable. The TV was small and not really viewable from the bed. The ensuite was a shower over a bath. WiFi was okay. The cafe/bar did lunch and evening meals but small menu/choice, and not expensive. The included breakfast in the morning (served from 7am) was good and had a great choice of hot and cold.
- Lindsay (10/5): Outstanding - Gorgeous old hisoric building. Outstanding gardens. Oustanding staff
- Ian (8/5): - Lovely garden
- Oliver (10/5): - Historic Tudor mansion at an affordable rate in a beautiful countryside setting.
- Desmond (8/5): - Amazing gardens and location
- Mary (10/5): - Amazing grounds and beautiful gardens. Excellent breakfast.
- Neil (10/5): - Really enjoyed this stay, great to stay in such a rural area. Gardens are amazing, accomodation if basic but everything that we needed. Having some bar meals and drinks on site was very helpful. Breakfast was substantial.
- Derek (8/5): - Excellent location and mainly helpful staff and really wonderful gardens. Ideal for a weekend stay or for a family event. Good value for money.
No lifts for more elderly folk which should be made clear when booking.
- Phillip (10/5): - This is part of Cambridge University so it’s not a hotel but it is fabulous!!
Amazing building with WOW factor !
Room was compact but everything you need is available- boiling hot day but the room remains cool and comfortable
Food at bar decent price superb meal of steak pie chips and gravy complimented with an ice cold beer was £19 👍
Great night sleep followed by a lovely breakfast couldn’t wish for more and will definitely be back when next in area
- Philip (10/5): - The house and grounds are stunning. The rooms are basic, but this does not matter to me, as long as the bed is comfortable, which it was. The breakfast was good. The evening meals were limited in choice, but fine for me. Great to be able to sit out on the terrace and look onto the manicured lawns and topiary. My only gripe was that people were moving around in the early hours and this was very audible, but that’s not the fault of the property, except for perhaps making the doors less slammable. The hall is pretty close to Madingley park and ride for getting into central Cambridge. I called in at the American cemetery nearby, which was moving. The pub just down the road was very attractive. I really enjoyed my stay.
- Nicola (6/5): - The building was beautiful. The rooms were dated and in need of updating, the floor in our shower room was peeling up. There was a TV in the room but it was tiny and to the right of the bed which gave me a stiff neck if I wanted to watch. The 'Bistro' was basic and only sold very basic food. The breakfast was plentiful but served canteen style and from heated dishes, not cooked to order. I would suggest this needs some work to be classified as a 4 star hotel.
- Anthony (10/5): Beautiful Madingley Hall and Gardens. - Madingley Hall really is beautiful and the grounds are incredible. It is the most wonderful place to explore and we spent a lot longer than we thought we would wandering the grounds and the house.
The history of the house and gardens is of course fascinating and there is an abundance of information available on both.
The staff are extremely friendly and work hard to make your stay a memorable one. They are also very knowledgeable about the history of Madingley and happy to answer questions.
Breakfast was great although I'd prefer non filter coffee but that's not really an issue. The food was plentiful, good quality and hot!
We'll definitely be back. We have more exploring to do and would love to see the gardens through the seasons.
- Philip (10/5): - Never stayed in such a lovely old building full of character. Park and ride 5 minutes by car £3.50 return into cambridge. Three horseshoes pub 5 minute walk away. 8 of us over 60 stayed and we all loved it. Thank you.
- MARC ANDRE (8/5): - Bien situé, tranquille. Impossible de joindre l'hôte via le courriel hotels.com mais on aurait pu aller cogner à la porte à côté si notre question avait été urgente.
Donc à part la communication, tout a été parfait.
- Samuel (10/5): - Beautiful grounds and great breakfast provided. Staff were very professional and helpful. Room was basic but clean with everything you would need. Perfect place to stay if you're driving near Cambridge
- JU YING (8/5): - The hotel is located inside an absolutely gorgeous building that is also used as the continuing education classrooms of Cambridge. The main hall is also used as an event venue that is frequented by other colleges of Cambridge. There are multiple gardens outside of establishment that are very large and made a morning or evening stroll quite lovely.
The bedroom area in comparison is much more modest, as the rooms and hallways of this area was very much Bauhaus inspired - simple, clean, and comfortable.
- Justine (6/5): - Very basic small rooms . No lift to carry your luggage to the first floor . It was like a dormitory
The area is excellent . Breakfast was very good
- Joan (8/5): - I liked the property much. Lovely, interesting buildings; full of character. Very helpful staff and tasty breakfasts. Only problem was the bath which I found a bit slippery. I think it needs some kind of treatment to make it non slip. Otherwise very good visit.
- Anne (10/5): - A beautiful building in gorgeous grounds , lovely single en-suite room at a great price. Reception and dining room staff are lovely and very helpful. I highly recommend, especially for single travellers as plenty of single rooms available
- Rodrigo (4/5): Outstanding exteriors, poor interiors - Breakfast: just enough, should have been better, but the room: too poor. The ones showed at the website are totally different. It´s a fake publication.
- Angela (10/5): - Excellent hotel in stunning grounds.
- A (8/5): Just another stay - Beautiful old building at the front provides amazing breakfast room but bedrooms are in more modern extention. The bedrooms are small but functional with basic facilities, tiny tv. Showers are very good and very clean.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nice - We enjoyed our one night stay here. It is a beautiful place with stunning surroundings. The room was small and there was no lift. The breakfast was good. The staff were helpful and friendly.
- Julie (10/5): - What a stunning setting. As it is still part of Cambridge University the bedrooms are basically for students. The small double room we were in is basic but with beautiful linen, good quality towels and curtains.
The building itself and the gardens are wonderful to walk around and enjoy. Highly recommend. Use madingley park and ride to get into the city centre.
- Ian (10/5): - comfortable no-nonsense
- Lindsay (10/5): Excellent - Lovely historic setting. Excelkent breakfast
- Julie (6/5): - Lovely building and grounds - fabulous friendly staff - cold shower was only downside and expensive bar!
- James (8/5): - Madingley Hall has the wow factor. It’s such a beautiful building and grounds. Inside, rooms are repurposed student rooms (I assume) and are basic, but a good night’s sleep was had. Breakfast buffet was great. It’s not 5 star but for the price paid and the wonderful surroundings it’s a great place to stay.
- Lindsy (10/5): - Lovely hotel
Beautiful grounds
- Rob (8/5): Delightful, shame about the breakfast - Madingley Hall is a delightful if somewhat twisty-corridored place to navigate. Everything was as you would expect except for the disappointing breakfast, which had a satisfactory range of Continental or full English options but the cooked breakfast was lukewarm at 9, a time when most of the conference delegates had already finished and left for their programmes.
- John (10/5): - Always a pleasure staying here
- Yo (8/5): - Good site with garden… beautiful.
- David (10/5): Great choice of hotel - Excellent last-minute overnight stay. Lovely room in a magnificent, quiet setting and very good value. Beautiful gardens for a walk after dinner. Great breakfast before departure, just a shame we couldn't stay longer!
- MARK (8/5): - Fabulous grounds....great breakfast....rooms a bit tired though...staff superb
- Jennifer (2/5): - We didn’t stay in the end. Madingley notified us on the morning we were in a double twin room. We booked a superior double with king sized bed
I tried e mailing, telephoning and even tried Expedia but not one person made contact until 3.03pm. We had by then booked other accommodation, we had no choice.
A week later Madingley are being uncooperative over a refund
Very very disappointing, they have apologised but kept my money
Madingley are clearly not to be trusted when booking, if they do this to us then they are disrespectful of their customers
- Juliet (10/5): - Our stay was very comfortable, the quiet and peaceful surroundings were relaxing after a wonderful diamond wedding celebration in the hall.
- lynette (8/5): - Stayed for 2 nights, room was fantastic, clean and comfortable bed, we had a roʻom that overlooked the gardens which was beautiful. Breakfast had a good choice, however the hot food wasnt very hot.
- Marcus (10/5): - Beautiful building and gardens, great location and good local pub for an excellent dinner
Rooms clean and comfortable but a little tired and need some attention
- Nick (10/5): - Beautiful hall just outside Cambridge
- Joyce (10/5): - Great value for money. Beautiful gardens. Our room had a view of the gardens. Lovely pub at the bottom of the drive. The staff were very frienfly and helpful. There was plenty of choice at breakfast. Would definitely stay again
- Joseph (8/5): Nice - Nice house and grounds. Not a 4*
- Paul (10/5): Excellent - We were very surprised to fi d this was za Jacobean building operated by Cambridge University. Beautifulsitustiln, grounds. Rooms simple but clea and adequate at a very good price.
Nice pub nearly too.
Definitely use it again
- Anthony (10/5): - Great place, beautiful building with great facilities
- Lindsay (10/5): Excellent stay - Excellent stay.
- ANTONY (6/5): - I had an excellent lovely stay at the hall.on site bar was convenient. Extremely helpful staff
- Colin (6/5): University of Cambridge has the money to do better - The property is in good order and the room facilities are clean and fresh.
Let down by untuned TV with host of tuning and programne search options all of which failed. Just a bix plugged into the wall.
Internal service phone inoperative.
Last of all. The mattress creaked and cracked with every pressure. It sounded very tired.
Overall though the price matched the product so ill leave it there but in reality these things shouldve been checked prior to letting out.
- Ssimon (6/5): - The inside had been modernised very tastefully but it wanst until i got to the room and settled in that i realised how this the walls are. I didnt notice any noise from the other rooms until someone needed the toilet, then i realised how thin the walls are as i could hear everything. All night everytime someone went to the bathroom!!!!!!!!
- Stephen (10/5): - I particularly felt the breakfast was first rate - even the fried eggs were uniquely without crusts! It was easy to get into Cambridge using the park-and-drive only a few minutes away.
- Philip (8/5): - Intriguing venue, lovely location, shower a bit weak and breakfast a bit chaotic.
- Michael (10/5): - Beautiful building and grounds
Friendly staff
Very good breakfast
Easy to get to park and ride
- M (6/5): Great for one night - Food fine. Had fish and chips on evening and cooked breakfast in the morning. All okay.
This was a business trip and I couldn't get ontk the interner which was disappointing. I have been to numerous hotels anx have not experienced this before. Staff were good to try and sort out issue.
- John (10/5): - Excellent stay highly recommended
- Maciej (8/5): Beautiful building and a warm functional room - Great stay - very warm and down to earth staff . Felt very at ease . The Hotel is beautiful and the grounds are lovely. The room was functional and very warm for a cold time of the year . Breakfast was really tasty and enjoyable . Would stay again . Many thanks
- Karl (4/5): - We stayed for 2 nights. Don’t let the exterior shots fool you. Beautiful building on the outside, but the walls and roof above our bedroom was infested with either mice or rats. Scurrying could be heard, which made us feel like the fury critters were in the room.
There was evidence that the critters had been in the room at some point, possible bait in the bedroom cupboard and damage to the carpet, possible sign of chewing.
On a positive the breakfast was certainly a redeeming feature.
- Paul (2/5): - Beautiful outside. Like student accommodation inside.
- Christopher (8/5): Away from the city hustle and bustle - Its a lovely old manor house set in its own lovely grounds and is part of Cambridge University. It is set on the southern side of the city. Check out is a very civilised 11am. It has a spacious bar with a garden terrace which does a limited menu but there is a pub a short walk away if you want something more substantial and a larger selection of beers. Breakfast is comprehensive and good quality. If having a cooked breakfast and there are not many guests booked in I would advise eating near the start time of 7am/7.30 weekend as, like most buffet style breakfasts it is lovely when it is first put out and from my experience a bit overcooked when it has been on display for a while. I would imagine that if you stay when there are plenty of guests this wouldn't be a problem as the items on the buffet would be replaced more often. It might be a personal thing I would prefer the plates were warm enough to stop them cooling the meal in which case, for me, it would be perfect. The staff are lovely and eager to make your stay as pleasant as possible. I have found that If disabled, they will bend over backwards to cater for you. I find it to be an oasis of calm and a good place to unwind after spending hours driving or sightseeing. Maddingly Park and Ride is nearby so you can dump the car and buy a £4 return ticket and avoid all the camera traps the very expensive car parking and the suicidal deliveroo cyclists often with no lights and riding through red traffic lights in the city.
- G (4/5): - Grounds were incredibly beautiful but the room provided was definitely not as clean as in the photos. Dust everywhere, no bathroom Matt given and stains all on the floor. Would recommend visiting but not to stay on the grounds.
- rodney (8/5): Nice hotel just needs to utilise what it has more. - Really enjoyable 2 night stay while exploring Cambridge. Breakfasts very good with no complaints, lovely building & grounds. Only negatives were that the only dining available
was more a cafe than a restaurant & there wasn't a nice lounge to relax in afterwards. It would have been ideal to relax with a drink in the evenings in one of the old rooms like the Stuart Room with an open fire in it. Instead we ate both nights at The 3 Horseshoes pub which is a 5min walk & is highly recommended.
- Sam (8/5): - Lovely room and friendly staff. Breakfast was nice.
- Lawrence (10/5): - Breakfast is fantastic !!!!!!
- Sajida (6/5): - Interesting property.
- Danni (8/5): - The grounds were absolutely beautiful, but the accommodation itself was very basic. The room was very hot. Also lots of stairs so getting luggage up and down was difficult. The breakfast was absolutely beautiful and the staff were very attentive. Bar meal options at night were very limited and basic. Location to the Madingley/Cambridge park and ride was outstanding. If you just need a place to lay your head for the night, this will do the trick.
- Nicole (10/5): - Stayed two nights, in a double room. Arrived late at night and checked in easy as had night security which issued our key.
Invluded breakfast which was self service buffet. Cooked food was hit and fresh, wirh various continental options too.
Staff very friendly and helpful.
- James Paul (8/5): A good experience - Entirely satisfactory. Room a well equipped student-type study with large double bed.
Beautiful, historic buildings and parkland on the edge of Cambridge. Had not realised that it's part of the university.
Satnav had problems finding it and perhaps the signage could be more visible from the road.
- Lawrence (8/5): - Nice old building but bathroom in need of refurbishment.
- Christine Ann (8/5): - It was the perfect venue for a party
- Robert (10/5): - Everything great.
Lovely old property - part of Cambridge University
Great breakfast
- Alan (10/5): - Very courteous, helpful staff
