Guest Reviews
- Claire (8/5): - I would recommend a stay here for the fabulous central location. The room was clean and check in instructions were very clear. Please be aware there was no reception as such, but if needed you can leave your luggage at the bar next door, and there were emergency contacts listed. We didn't need any of this but good to know.
There were a couple of bottles of water in the room and some discount vouchers, all of which were an unexpected bonus.
The kitchenette was handy if you wanted to make a drink or heat up a microwave meal.
The only downside was the noise from the bar below, however earplugs were provided. We had to keep the windows closed but a large fan was in the room so the heat wasn't a big issue.
Excellent value for money for a clean, comfortable room in a great location.
- Katy (10/5): excellent customer service - lovely staff very helpful!! great budget option for a one night stay and cute decor
- Verified traveler (6/5): Paper thin walls - Good location and sizeable room, but not value for money. Easy check in. The sheets weren't clean. Expected the noise to come from the bars below, but the noise was predominantly those in rooms next door - walls are paper thin.
- Lyndsey (8/5): Lovely room...a little loud! - Great little hostel in the middle of york. The street is very busy and lined with bars. There was loud music until late which we could hear but didn't effect us too much as our room was at the back in the city walls room. Very clean and comfortable and what we expected from the price paid. A much cheaper option than other hotels but I wouln't recommend if youwant an ealy night!
- Gabriela (6/5): - The room has a good size and clean enough.
The bed was not very comfortable.
- Lee (8/5): Hip hop - A great hostel is you’re under 35, if you’re not it’s a little rawkus,
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good location, friendly staff, funky room, would definitely recommend this place.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - El lugar esta bien. Muy bien ubicado. Pero es muy caro el bar para comer.
- Alison (10/5): - Our holiday was amazing. The hostel far exceeded expectation. The ocean room came with an ensuite. We had fresh towels and toiletries. There were complimentary tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and botted water. Our greeter carried my suitcase up the stairs for me. There was even a lavender mister, large fan, and super comfy beds. I was also able to leave my suitcase with them. The staff were ever so nice and helpful. Definitely recommend. Definitely visit again. The location is superb. Not more than a 5 minute walk to everywhere.
Thank you so much for our stay
- Verified traveler (10/5): - everything was very good excellent facilities and very helpful and very helpful staff
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very courteous staff, very well maintained accommodation - the price is unbelievably cheap for what you get.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Weekend stay - Fantastic find - could not be more central and very cheap! The staff were all incredibly helpful from the girl who answered the phone when I rang asking where to park (she offered to send someone to pick up my bag as I couldn’t drive right up to the hostel) to the man who showed us to our room. The room was very comfortable and clean - I was worried about light and noise as it is so central but neither was a problem at all. The kitchen provided for guests use was clean and very well equipped. The bonus was a 20% food discount in the lovely tapas bar below and Kennedys next door.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Central location, well furbished hostel - Really good, had all the amenities in the room like kitchen, common room and bathroom. Centrally located. Don't have any complaints and enjoyed my 1 night stay here.
- Jacqueline (8/5): - Good central location near Minster, great for Christmas markets. Check-In and breakfast available in KENNEDY's bar next door with 20% off food/drinks for hotel guests. Very clean boutique style hostel. Had Ensuite room at rear with Wetroom. Only drawback was noise from KENNEDY's bar next door (Ear plugs are provided in the rooms).
- zebbedee (6/5): - Ok in the centre of York but a 2 min walk and you could be in safety at half the price with much better facilities
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Good hostel in York town centre
good money for value
Good staff,helpful
- Mick (2/5): - Could not get to my room as I arrived after midnight
- Christine (8/5): - Appreciated the hospitality, friendliness and professionalism of the staff. Every comfor wa considered. The only downer was the internet.
- Jerry (2/5): Great location but noisy and hot - Don’t stay here unless you are prepared to stay up until 2AM due to noise from 3 adjoining bars. No AC so floor 3 location gets quite warm. Perfect location for York but not much else going for it.
- Ernie (6/5): Right in the middle of town, best location - Amazing central location, with non-stop action, 24/7 noise and activity. Many of the rooms are adjacent to the 24 hour bar smoking patio. I wondered why they provide ear plugs on your bed. Even with them, it was quite loud. The rooms are dated, and could use better cleaning, windows need some improvement. Towels are provided and changed every day, bathroom is good and clean. As a hostel, the price is good, but for private rooms, you may be wise to choose a normal hotel.
- kerry (10/5): Great location, felt like a home not a hostel - I stayed in one of the rooms with a living room and kitchen. It felt like a beautiful old apartment and not a hostel. I loved it. Location is perfect. Good food (and discounted for guests) downstairs. Overall better experience than expected.
- Verified traveler (6/5): don't recommend - Pros: Very clean, friendly staff, free tea, nice location, free earplugs
Cons: uncomfortable mattress, VERY noisy like sleeping in a club until 3a.m.
- kerry (10/5): Amazing hostel! Felt like a bed and breakfast - Perfect location. The living room area was a bonus! Absolutely loved it. Only downside was the bed...not very comfy!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent place!!
- Chi Ping (10/5): Nice place to stay - Very good
- Sue (8/5): Fantastic location!
- You can't get much closer to shops, bars and restaurants. A friendly welcome and room was fine. Nothing fancy but clean and great shower in en suite. We had read in reviews about the noise and they weren't exaggerating! The hotel will definitely suit people who like to party late better. The earplugs supplied did help a bit! Breakfast in Kennedys with a discount was fab too. We really enjoyed our trip.
- Hannah (8/5): Great stay in the heart of York - The service was great and the hostels amenities were very desirable. Location is perfect, in the heart of York. Would stay again.
- YA-FEI (6/5): Nice location and cleanliness. Noise though - Overall good, except the bar next door continued playing loud music and ppl in the bar singing shouting till 1 or 2am, could hardly sleep because of that. Don't expect it to be quiet even it's a Monday night.
The wifi in the room was weak.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The hostel is in a prime location. The private room had everything we required. The kitchen was great for drinks. The discount in the bar/restaurant was great.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Cannot rate this highly enough. - The staff were fantastic and so attentive!
The whole ethos of the place is superb. Cool, Relaxed and great value.
- Andrew (10/5): Cosy hostel in the centre of York - We were welcomed and checked in very quickly - he offered to take our suitcases upstairs too. Our double room was very spacious and comfortable and looked right onto the market street. It was high enough that we could barely hear the music from downstairs (earplugs are provided if necessary) and the decor made it feel as if it was our own little apartment. The best thing about the hostel is how cheap it is in comparison to hotels, clean towels are provided every morning, discounts are on offer for Kennedy's downstairs, and it is right in the centre of York; Evil Eye is about a minute walk away!
- Catherine (8/5): Good for very short stay! - Short stay! You could not get any nearer the town centre. 15 min walk from train station where we parked! This is a hostel!,,, not a hotel. We had a double aun sweat room,on top floor! Will not suit anyone with bad legs! Staff were good! Be prepared for the music going on from next door until 2am.its what you make of it staying here! It will not be to everyone's taste.
- russ & ashley (8/5): Nice hotel.unique rooms..central - Staff were superb friendly. Rooms good..but a lift would have been nice.. 2 minor niggles..my bedside lamp flickered the quit..badly connected LED. And shower drained so slow that wet room nearly spilled into bedroom....but...despite that..very comfortable bed..plenty of clean towels and funky UV lighting with glowing paintings on walls...and the bed shone like moon...different..unique...oh yeah..and they held our bags for the whole day while we explored York after we checked out..and food in Kennedys was good..fair price..with 20% off if you stay at the fort....
- Imogen (10/5): - The hotel is in a great location and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Our twin room was furnished nicely and was very clean there was also really good ensuite wet room. The beds were comfy and the towels were fluffy. Downstairs you can find small but more than adequate communal kitchen facilities. I can not recommend it enough, absolutely perfect for a short city break. Also you get 20% of food in the bar next door which is lovely. We had the best eggs royale I've ever tasted for breakfast! Overall great value for money and a lovely experience.
- Arthur (8/5): - Very loud on friday night
- Natalie (10/5): - Absolutely awesome, staff were so friendly and the hostel was great. Really enjoyed my stay!
- Christophe (6/5): Comfortable, modern and trendy, but far too noisy - The Fort Boutique Hostel is well equipped and very comforatable - very good beds, good kitchen, free tea and coffee, lots of stuff going for it.
However, although I would dearly wish to recommend it, I cannot really do so because of extreme proximity to a very noisy bar (out of which the hostel is managed, actually). The noise is a very big factor to consider if you want to stay there - the hostel does give away ear plugs, but it's not exactly the same as a nice quiet night...
- Verified traveler (2/5): V poor - Not good for business. No parking, v basic, v noisy, late checkout.
- Chris (8/5): Very convenient central location - Have stayed several times, so know it can get very noisy at weekends especially. It's more of a hostel than a hotel, so you might find that other guests can return very noisily in the early hours of the morning.
Some rooms are directly above the bar, which plays loud music till around 2 am.
Much quieter Sun-Wed. Thu/Fri/Sat, in my opinion, best suited to those who are partying or clubbing, and those who don't mind noise. Dormitory rooms likely to be booked at weekends by hen/stag party groups.
Double rooms are up several flights of stairs, and there's no lift. Not very suitable for elderly or disabled. Room ventilation not very good, gets very stuffy on hot days, no air conditioning
If you book bearing the above in mind, you'll know what to expect as regards noise, and should therefore not be disappointed.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Good price. Noise in perspective - What we like : the good price, the location, the Italian shower, the comfy beds, the service and the kindness of the owner.
What we disliked : the hair on the white towels, the very lack of isolation (as if our neighbours were with us in the same room...), the cheap decoration of the "city walls" room.
- Verified traveler (6/5): This hostel is okay. - I found my 8 person shared dormitory not very practical in arrangement. There were no chairs for sitting or putting on stockings (which stinks if you're stuck with a top bunk). There is a TV in the room, which is a nice touch, but the room is configured in a way so that only the lower bunk of one of the beds can see it (again, there are no chairs or anything other than your bed to sit on). The bathroom is a single use en-suite, so in the morning if you need to use the toilet, there may be a wait as someone is probably in the shower. There are two different faucets on the bathroom sink, so you can wash your face and brush your teeth with either very hot water or very cold water; it is not possible to mix the two for a nice warm combination. The kitchen is right off the bedroom (with a door that does not close properly), so you will definitely be awoken by people clanging glasses and pots in the morning. Also, I found my roommates not so courteous, with one in particular coming in each morning (on Saturday and Sunday) at 7 talking on the phone (while everyone else in the room is obviously still sleeping); perhaps some posted house rules could help for those people who are ignorant about basic hostel etiquette. All that said, ear plugs were provided, the rooms were new and nicely decorated, the location was amazing, the staff was really kind, and the facility was secure (bonus: wifi was available throughout the hostel).
- Verified traveler (8/5): can be better - I chose here because I was traveling with a lot of luggages, but the only elevator was broken, I had a really hard time of managing my big heavy baggages...The heater was not hot enough for winter and the window cannot be closed properly, extremely cold during the midnight. individual showrooms was great, kitchen was large with everything you need for a brief cooking. Great location for longtime staying.
- FIONA (10/5): Low cost excellent accommodation - Excellent central accommodation
Lovely breakfast at Kennedy's
- brenda (8/5): Hostel with a twist - Arrived late sunday and presented myself at the reception in kennedys bar where bad was playing not good first impression. Luckily noise didnt drift to the second floor dorm. With clean sheets, wifi, complimentary beverages will come again.
- Melodie (8/5): A Great Hostel, Almost Hotel Like :) - A great Place to get away to, Hostel was very tidy and organised. The places is cleaned daily. They provide with a towel, full kitchen and shower/toilet rooms. Lockers also provided, but a bit on the small side. They provide many things that most hostels I have been to don't. Overall a great place to crash, and even comfy community facilities.
Only Downside I would say is that the bar below can be a bit loud at night.. but they provide ear plugs to help fix the issue.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Almost perfect - The place is fantastic. Free laundry, great service, modern and clean, great kitchen and common area, 20% of food downstairs. Easily a home away from home right in the center of town. The only downside is the super springy bed and very noisy due to club next door where you can feel the base. They give you ear plugs which was important.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great location in the centre of York. Double room was large and felt like a hotel. Overall very nice.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Great location! - I stayed in one of the en-suite double rooms in this hostel and found my stay pleasant. There tends to be loud music playing most nights but the location is right in the centre of York and fantastic for seeing the sights. Overall I would give 3/5.
- Maureen (10/5): Fantastic service - We loved our stay we were made to feel very welcome. Such a great location right in the middle of Yoke. Close to the train station. Our room was so big for a hostel. The only little thing we found was trying to shut the bathroom door. Apart from that rooms were tidy, sheets perfect. Thank you again.
- miguel (8/5): Very central hotel in York - The hotel is very central with a lot of bars around and food options.
The room was small but comfortable and they put an effort in the design to make it more attractive.
The big problem was the noise as there is a bar open until late just next to the hotel with live rock music which you can hear even with your window closed. The hotel offer earplugs which was really helpful.
