- Ronnie (9/5): Excellent - It is clean and secure. Nicely positioned to access gas stations, restaurants, and other facilities. I could not get the TV to work but that was probably me. I also did not call anyone at the front desk to inquire as to what to do but I did not want to bother someone at the front desk.

- Mark (8/5): Was satisfied with our stay clean and comfortable - Comfortable clean good service everything was good Bathroom could use a little maintenance
- Ben (8/5): Had a great stay. Very clean rooms. -
- glH5879IX (10/5): Great place to stay! - Great place to stay when in town. Right off the interstate. Clean rooms with breakfast. Quiet. Sauna and hot tub. Clean hall carpet. I opted for no room service and was not disappointed. The soaps provided left my hands feeling nourished. Would recommend and will stay again if needed.
- Christy (7/5): - Convenient
- kyej2024 (10/5): Ideal, clean, and comfortable stay! - Loved the warm welcome and customer service. Checked in late, very courteous upon arrival. Chose this location based on the reviews and they were true. Clean, nice bedding, big TV, great little fridge with freezer, microwave, coffee pot, free wifi (easy connect), nice variety of breakfast items. Good phone charging options in room due to minimal outlets. Right by food, fuel, and stores. Will certainly be visiting again. Thank you for a great night's rest!
- 83treverb (10/5): Breakfast and room perfect - Guest services was very polite and friendly. Easy checking, rooms were priced very reasonable. Room was clean and ready. The atmosphere was very good they offered free breakfast and had a very nice selection of items.
- tammycU6887IR (10/5): Grateful - Such a wonderful place to stay.
Everything you need within walking distance.
Not my first stay and will be back again and again!!
- Y7343YAamberm (8/5): Good little place. Allows pets. Safe. Clean. Will stay here again. - Cleanliness was good. Easy to find. Parking right outside my door. Allowed my two cats (ESA’s). Would stay again. Room felt safe. Atmosphere was good. Not scary or sketchy like some other places. I thought it was priced low but felt safe compared to some other states I’ve been to. No drug use outside. No fighting neighbors. The place was older but for what I needed it for (just to sleep) it was perfect. The neighbors were outside talking but even they were quiet after 9pm. I appreciated that. The service was beyond helpful, I really appreciate them allowing my service animals free of charge.

- Robert (9/5): Good to see young people putting their heart into the business. - We appreciated the quiet even tho the location was close to a truck stop. No rowdy customers. Even their dogs were quiet. Our little dog appreciated the grassy field to run around in. We don’t travel much, but appreciate the work you all do to make the stay great! The metal bed frame made an unusual sound when there was weight put on it. Not annoying, but somewhat comical.
- Carl (8/5): Would definitely stay there again if I ever get back to Mitchel - Liked the waffles. and yogurt no complaints
- Todd (7/5): You get what you pay for. - Breakfast was above average. The room was dark and I slept like a rock. While the hotel is very dated it is clean. Very very dated, musty smell in room. Overflowing ashtrays outside of the room.
- Hilmar (9/5): Great staff, property well maintained but on the older side. -

- B427MAdennism (8/5): Traveling through west - We needed a place to sleep when traveling through out west. Very inexpensive so we’re not sure what we would get. Actually place was clean, but dated furniture. Bed was fine and towels and sheets were good. Breakfast was good with waffles, biscuits and gravy, hard boiled eggs and rest of continental breakfast offerings. Small table area. There is a good cafe across parking lot that we walked to for dinner.
- Pioneer702455 (10/5): Clean and updated - Our room was recently updated. Very clean room and bathroom. No unpleasant smells. Bed and linens in excellent condition. Large screen TV. HDMI receiver next to TV had to be reset by unplugging and plugging back in but worked fine after that. Strong WI-FI connection. Very reasonable price. Checked online reviews which were primarily positive before reserving a room. Typical breakfast. Recommend you ask for first floor room especially in winter months as stairs are outside. Checked in with Andy, who was pleasant and friendly. Recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a clean comfortable room.

- N4562CGcarolm (4/5): TV didn’t have signal. - Inexpensive. Simple not fancy. Clean. Television doesn’t work! Are you serious? Don’t say you have tv if you can’t watch it. My husband didn’t want to call so he just watched on his phone. Disappointing.
- 12brandiek (10/5): Best overlooked hotel in the area - This is a very unassuming older hotel/lodge that shouldn't be overlooked. Family owned and operated, a truly wonderful place to stay. The room was incredibly clean and charming. Breakfast was really good, including biscuits and gravy. Self-service laundry and hot tub were available. The price was appropriate for the room I received.
- christinefP9499GU (10/5): Unexpectedly wonderful! - Stopped on a Monday night for an overnight on our way to the Black Hills. We were leery of the place, given the price was so low…figured it would be a smelly dirty dump. Especially since it was a place that allows pets. But after reading the many positive online reviews about cleanliness, etc, we decided to take the chance. Wow, were we pleasantly surprised when we walked in the lobby, hallways and room smelled so fresh and clean! Turns out that pets aren’t allowed in those areas, only in a section of rooms that have their own outside entrances.
We didn’t bring pets, so can’t say about those rooms, but our room was immaculate and the carpet was perfectly clean, not sticky and stained like you find even in many higher priced hotels. We really appreciated the sink/vanity being separate from the toilet/shower, especially with 3 of us adults sharing the 2-bed room. And surprisingly, for the low low nightly price, the room still had a microwave, large cold fridge, and coffee maker, extra blanket, plenty of towels and wash cloths, hair dryer shampoo soap etc. Very good water pressure in the shower! Again, I can’t express enough how clean and ODOR-FREE our room #48 was!
There was a very small hot tub (no pool) in the hotel which we didn’t use, but peeked in that room and it seemed clean and smelled nice. The fellow at the front desk was so friendly and also advised us to the nearby Cattleman’s Club steakhouse, which we walked to only a few yards away, and had a delicious meal with PERFECTLY prepared steaks.
The hotel continental breakfast bar was well appointed with nice looking fresh fruit and hot sausage gravy with biscuits, good little yogurts, waffles etc. Not much room for more than about 3-4 people in there at a time comfortably, but we were the only ones in there during our breakfast, so I can foresee potential frustration for travelers with families or when breakfast time is busy.
Other reviews mentioned traffic noise from the nearby truck stop, but we didn’t seem to notice it.
We would definitely stay here again and we highly recommend this nice little CLEAN affordable hotel!
- 459matthewr (10/5): Amazing People Clean Rooms - Amazing people and super clean rooms. I was arriving very late at night and they personally called me to make sure I was still coming. When I arrived, they were super friendly, and even after locking myself out of my room late at night, they came out and helped me back in. Very clean rooms, comfy beds, and a great place to stay. I will definitely be returning.
- Don (10/5): Passing through in peace. - Casual It served its purpose so no complaints
- Katie (7/5): - Very clean. Staff was friendly.
- MidwestScout (8/5): Travel back in time - This stay was like a trip back in time, with actual keys instead of cards for your room entry and simple, comfortable furnishings. If you are looking for a stay in a modern hotel with multiple amenities, keep searching. However, if you just need a dry, warm, clean place to lay your head, this checks all the boxes.
- Robert (8/5): - Room was comfortable, hot tub was nice, breakfast met expectations. No elevator to 2nd floor was only an inconvenience because we had an unusual amount of baggage to bring in from the car (moving across country).
- Colgrove (8/5): -
- Linda (5/5): Good sleep, not a great breakfast tho - Location was good Front desk person needs instruction on how to welcome guests! Walked in and immediately asked for last name, assuming we had reservation. There was no ‘hello’ or welcome, all business!
- Richard (8/5): Very comfortable and price and location were good - Location
- Pete (8/5): - Price and location Noisy
- cycyk (8/5): -
- James (9/5): We stay there often for price and convenience. -
- Katherine (8/5): Clean, Comfortable, - I was driving from Upstate New York to Wyoming . I stopped at the Thunderbird Lodge o my first ay out. I liked it so much that I stopped there on the way back. Cleanliness is at the top of my list. The rooms wete clean. The beds were comfortable. The room was large and seemed to invite a longer stay than I had time for. It is a motel with the room door opening directly to parking. Especially with the dog, it was nice not to navigate halls. There was a large field (about 2 acres) I took my dog to. Since she has a reliably good recall, I let her off-leash to get some exercise. I would have preferred the more standard 11:00am checkout time. I had a long day and got in very late. A more leisurely morning would have been nice.
- Rod (6/5): -
- Richard (10/5): - Room was clean and comfortable. TV was new and air conditioner was quiet. Didn't use the hot tub or breakfast bar. Local restaurant was reasonable and good food.
- Matt (4/5): - Warning on doors for sportsman to lock doors, apparently guns have been stolen.
- Kara (6/5): - Room was somewhat rundown and not very clean. The bed was very hard.
- MPGSL96 (10/5): A pleasant surprise and a refreshing stay. - In September, 2025, we traveled from Illinois to the Black Hills by way of Mitchell, SD. We usually choose a chain hotel so we can use points and have familiarity with the product. That wasn't possible so we looked on the web and found the Thunderbird Lodge where we stopped and asked to look at a room before committing. We were very pleasantly surprised at the hotel itself and the reasonable rate, particularly when compared to some pretty awful nearby hotels that took the opportunity to price gouge.
At the front desk, staff, in our case the manager, was pleasant and accommodating from the very start. He not only showed us the room but pointed out all the available amenities from an ice machine, a larger than average luggage trolley, a cooler with beer, wine and incidentals for purchase and a hot tub.
The 2-queen room was large and clean. Bathroom sink and faucets appeared new and were spotless. The vanity mirror provided great lighting. It was notable that the toilet seat was wood and substantial instead of the cheap and flimsy plastic so many hotels favor. The shower stall was dated but clean and adequate.
The queen beds were had a variety of pillows, very comfortable linens and made for a great night's sleep for our taste. There was bedside lighting and there were outlets for charging electronic devices.
There was a larger than usual refrigerator, which is great for travelers with leftovers. A microwave was available, as well.
Outside, there was plenty of parking. There were picnic tables where travelers could relax and read or chat with other travelers. Staff readily accommodated us by moving tables together for a large group that gathered. They also would wander by periodically to be available if anyone needed anything, never causing any distraction.
There was a steakhouse adjacent and walkable from the Thunderbird. We didn't dine there but a large party from the hotel did and gave it good reviews. Other dining options were within walking distance and some within driving distance. Coffee, liquor and groceries were nearby, as well.
The Corn Palace is in downtown Mitchell - a fun place to check out. There are other historical sights, too, if time permits.
The next day, we were a couple of hours from the hotel when we received a phone call from the hotel manager to inform us we had left a valuable belonging in our room. We weren't in a position to turn around at that point. The manager agreed to hold on to it for us so we could retrieve it on our return trip.
It was refreshing to know we had a good, clean place to stay on our way back. We stayed in a different room and were equally as satisfied as we were with our initial stay.
The only recommendation we would make is that housekeeping minimize conversation and door closing noise so early in the morning.
If we ever head that way again, we'll plan to stay at the Thunderbird Lodge. They take very good care of their patrons and their property.
- Jan (8/5): Overnight stay - Just traveling through, but a nice spot for the night just off the freeway. Room was spacious and clean. The man checking us in was curt with us because we had booked online instead of directly. Woman upon our checkout was very pleasant though.
- Scott (10/5): - Cabela’s, Menards and Walmart very close - good for us when passing thru town and needed to visit all three
- Richard (10/5): - Hotel and rooms are outdated, but clean. No bugs, no odor. Friendly staff. Our stay was better than expected
- Jerry (10/5): -
- Roger (6/5): - Decent room, good for a brief stay.
- Breeden (10/5): -
- Breeden (10/5): -
- Gregory (8/5): - Rooms were clean but outdated and carpet was worn out. Hot tub was in need of cleaning so didn’t use it, Breakfast was terrible with cold biscuits and some gravy in a crockpot was the only choice for something hot.
- Terry (8/5): - Was nice. Friendly staff
- JANE (10/5): - The hotel management was very friendly, beds were very comfortable. We would stay here again.
- GrandTour673884 (8/5): Our Stay. - Location, Beds. Breakfast. Pets. excellent. We'll be back !. Nothing else to add just filling character minimum......
- Paul (8/5): - Good size room for the price.need to do a better job vacuuming. A lot of heavy dust in edges and corners.
- SusieDavis64 (10/5): Great find!! - We had a wonderful stay at the Thunderbird Lodge in Mitchell! The price was excellent, and the staff at both check-in and check-out were very friendly and professional, making us feel welcome right away. The lodge has a bit of old charm, and we loved the fact that they still use real keys for the rooms—it gave it a nostalgic touch you don’t often find anymore. Our room was comfortable, and everything was just what we needed for a pleasant stopover. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it for anyone passing through Mitchell.
- Lorene (8/5): - There are restaurants, gas stations and stores near here. If you are one who likes all the bells and whistles this is not for you.
If you like friendly staff, clean rooms, comfortable beds and the feel of an old mom and pop place then this is a great one! This is an older hotel that is very clean and well kept. They is a tv, hair dryer and clean bedding and towels. The rooms are clean and lots of space and hot water showers. They have a nice breakfast and jacuzzi if you want to use it.
I would stay here again no problem.
- Charles (8/5): - Nice room
- Debra (6/5): - Property looked nice from outside but room needed some maintenace.
- Barbara (10/5): - Very nice place! The staff were all very friendly and helpful. This is an older property that is well taken care of.
- Caroline (10/5): - Large room as pictured. Sheets and bed cover getting worn, carpet could use cleaning
- Christopher (8/5): - Clean friendly convenient location.
- Pamela (10/5): - Convenient to the interstate and good price
- Timothy (4/5): - .
- Travis (8/5): - Room was clean. Everything was just a little outdated. But, for the price it was a great value.
- Cassandra (2/5): - We had a king room on the second floor. At first glance, the room appeared to be somewhat dated but clean. There were flies and gnats in the room. A nuisance, but not completely unexpected for a town on the prairie.
When we turned out the light, some flat black bug crawled across us. We started stripping the bed to see where it went and if there were others. Beneath the clean white sheets, everything was dirty and stained in multiple layers of mattress and pads. We didn't bother to go to the front desk. Being exhausted and disgusted, we quickly packed our luggage, left the key on the dresser, and found another place to stay.
- Reed (7/5): Worked good for us and was agreat halfway point to our destination. - Very convenient and close to food and shopping . Good continental breakfast. They had apparently just shampooed the carpet so it was a little damp upon our arrival.
- Thomas (8/5): - room was clean and well kept. easy access from the interstate. restaurant close by. staff was friendly. would stay here again.
- Fiona (10/5): - Staff very friendly
- Lawrence (6/5): - Location Tiny toilets
- Yiftach (6/5): - The place needs a lot of TLC.
It was OK for one night however I will choose a different place if I come back.
In the room the coffee machine had a cord that couldn’t reach the electrical outlet.
The remote did not work for the TV and you had to turn in on from the TV itself.
The bathroom is old and not clean.
- Marlene (6/5): - Room was clean and beds comfortable. The breakfast were bare minimum.
- Terrie (10/5): - Friendly staff. Clean, nice old time feel.
- Taylor (10/5): - Good for a short stay! Decent area and pretty nice breakfast!
- Janice (8/5): - We were just here for the night before moving west to see the sights. The room was good, the breakfast was more than we expected and good. There is a McDonalds drive thru right behind the building so we did hear a little traffic early evening but it was quiet during sleeping hours.
- karen (2/5): One and done never again - Mass confusion when checking in. Bathroom needs a deep clean there’s mold growing around shower. The walls need cleaned there’s rust on the walls from the heaters. Why does the light switches not work to turn on lights?? Best part of the hotel was checking out the next morning.
- Debi (10/5): - Nice hotel
- Mark (8/5): - Property is showing its age but location is great and it is a good vale. Service was wonderful.
- Jennifer A (8/5): - The front desk clerk was amazing. He was charming, funny, but not a push over! He was professional to boot! He made our stay memorable, except for his name, i cant remember his name.
- Kevin H (8/5): - Stayed one night, location was convenient to interstate, affordable and clean. Would stay again.
- James (10/5): - Friendly. All around excellent. Doesn’t get better
- Derek (8/5): - Great cheap place to stay on I90 staff was friendly room was clean

- Kevin (6/5): - Good location for finding food gas Slept decent Staff friendly Good overnight stop.
- sherry (10/5): - Most friendly welcoming staff. They keep you feeling safe when staying here
- Donna (8/5): - Nice for a one night stay. Restaurant options available within walking distance.
