Guest Reviews
- Joanne (6/5): - No water for the 24 hours we were there. They said it was city wide but stores, restaurants, and nicer hotels had water. We assumed no cistern
- Douglas (8/5): - If you stay here you would want a room that overlooks the patio rather than the noisy street.
- Christiane (6/5): Sleepable, not confortable - Its a good hotel for transiting in San Jose. The person at the reception was lovely but apart from that we were happy not to stay longer. The room is not really welcoming, very simple and spartiat. The pictures defenitly looked better.
- Carole (8/5): Bon rapport qualité prix - Excellent rapport qualité prix
- Verified traveler (6/5): - We had an alright stay. Lots of noise but that seems to be the case everywhere we’ve been in San Jose. WIFI was horrible. Good breakfast. Staff was nice. Not bad for a quick stopover.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Sehr hilfsbereites Personal. Ruhige und zentrale Lage
- Richard (10/5): Nice Staff - The staff very friendly, helpful in making tour reservations, and giving us advice on catching busses, etc
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great little hotel - A clean and friendly hotel. I would definitely recommend it.
- Daniela (10/5): Cozy, comfortable, friendly B&B centrally located - We, a family of three, very much enjoyed our short stay at Hotel Kekoldi and wished we could have stayed longer.
Kekoldi is a small boutique hotel with very friendly, welcoming and helpful hosts and service. Our room (#1) was pretty basic (BYO bathroom amenities) but very spacious and clean, which was all we needed. When I was able to catch a peak in room #2 though, I saw that that one has very lovely design/stucco.
Although it is very centrally located in inner San Jose, close to major bus terminals (e.g. Gran Caribe Terminal for going to Tortuguero is in walking distance), museums and parks, it is nice and quiet.
It has a cute courtyard and garden, and an artsy breakfast nook, where we enjoyed a very yummy complimentary breakfast with made to order eggs, homemade jam and toast, fresh fruits, fruit juice, cereals, coffee/tea.
Some people remarked they had a hard time finding it...yes, at night the hotel sign is hard to see (half-covered by a plant), but google maps has no problem to lead you to the address. Then it's up a staircase to ring the night bell at the wrought-iron gate, which is locked at night - as it should be in any major city center. When we rang the bell, someone immediately came to let us in and welcome us.
There is a great selection of restaurants in walking distance (such as Cafe Mundo and Cafe Rojo), and we felt safe enough in the area to walk back from a restaurant at 10 pm.
Absolutely great value for money!
- Dan (8/5): Good Hotel, Great Value. - This hotel was well worth the expense. The room was large and the breakfast good. The location was also good. I would stay there again and may do so when I return to San Jose later in July.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Off the main streets hotel - Lots of room with an extra bed in a separate area. The breakfast was fruit, toast, homemade jams and cooked to order eggs.
- CRAIG (8/5): - Rooms were comfortable and the staff folks were friendly and helpful. Area is a bit sketchy but close to city core. The hotel is hard to find (sign is difficult to see from the street) so your cab/shuttle driver should be forewarned.
- Samuel (8/5): Decent Hotel for Leaving from Terminal 7-10 - The hotel is decent. The front desk manager was helpful with all of our questions of the area. The area is not the nicest, but better than the area around Bus Terminal 7-10 (where we were leaving the next morning).
Ordenado y seguro, amables y ayudan a ubicar lugares!
- Robert (6/5): - The Hotel Kekoldi Garden is in the midst of being sold, so it's hard to know if the current proprietor had just given up on it, anticipating the transfer to a new owner or if it's always been like this. However, it provides extremely basic accommodations, which is disappointing because it has so much potential. Perhaps the new owners will turn it into something great, but right not it isn't anything special.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The staff couldn’t be more accommodating. Only problems were water pressure in bathroom would sometimes trickle to nothing and there was a very bad smell in the bathroom almost always.
- Thomas (8/5): Center city; clean, comfortable, low price - A one night layover in San Jose, before heading to La Fortuna. Looking for a comfortable, but low cost, hotel in downtown. This hotel was the perfect fit. Not fancy, but clean and comfortable.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The owner was really friendly, charming, very helpful, polite and knowledgeable. He went out of his way for us. We had to leave at 6am but he gave us coffee and fruit before we left. It is in a very good location. The only thing we didn’t like was that we could only spend one night there as we had booked trips around Costa Rica.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very helpful, friendly staff. Beautiful garden to relax and enjoy breakfast in. Good location.
- VICTOR (8/5): A great little hotel - A very small hotel but a joy to stay at. Vincent the owner plus the staff could not be faulted - they were excellent. The breakfast was good but it would have been nice to have some yogurt.I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.Good location, close to the town centre and near the bus station.
- Christina (10/5): - Excellent deal for the money. Great location with excellent service. Everything is very clean and there was a very nice breakfast included in the price. Just around the corner to some beautiful parks and museums.
- johan (8/5): Tranquilo hotel - Todo bien
- Verified traveler (8/5): great hotel, breakfast, good rate - Great hotel converted from large house.
Great breakfast with made to order eggs.
Room did not have ac but this was not needed in May.
Area is central but quiet at night, recommend use taxi at night.
- Paul (8/5): Nice place - Owner/manager was very friendly and helpful.
- Joseph (8/5): Charming Art Deco Hotel in City Center - Charming garden for breakfast; good value and location
- Katie (8/5): Cozy in San Jose - Good option for staying in San Jose. Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Breakfast was delicious.
- Chris (10/5): An oasis in the city - This little city hotel is an oasis in the bustle of San Jose. It has great charm and the staff is so over the top helpful. I love the artful decor and the bright colors. The garden is a bird watching haven. My mattress was the great. The bathrooms are updated with good hot water for a shower and a real hair dryer! Yes it is an older building, but the remodel has kept its charm while making it very comfortable.
- Sean (2/5): NOT SAFE LOCATION - We had a shock when we reached to the hotel. There are few girls hanging around and approached to me, and other girl came to me said something but I don´t understand Spanish. Also, there are few men around building with backpack, and keep watched us because we keep drove around the building to find a entrance. The building was so dark and totally blocked with black iron grills. So, we gave up to stay at this hotel and get another hotel.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice hotel with good staff and breakfast - Overall a good hotel. Located in downtown so traffic is loud. The staff was very helpful and the fruit and eggs for breakfast were very good. I would definitely stay here again.
- amanda (10/5): - Shower pressure was low. Otherwise our stay was excellent
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It was perfect, we had to leave early and even they made breakfast for us
- Ariana (2/5): Overall. BAD! - Long story short, I never ended up staying here. You really do get what you pay for. This hotel is in a bad area and all the locals were warning me. When we first arrived we were in shock. There was a man doing drugs on the stairs and that was strike 1. The outside of this "hotel' was false advertising, and if you have luggage, good luck getting up those stairs (strike 2). The staff was not helpful whatsoever and the rooms were disgusting. I've learned my lesson! I'd rather pay $100 more for a Marriott.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Super hotel - Excellent place to stay. Super quiet, clean, good price and excellent breakfast.
- Jennifer (8/5): Comfortable room - Comfortable room overlooking outdoor courtyard. Owner arranged affordable shared airport transportation that was very convenient.
- bob (10/5): Kekoldi on my mind - only stayed one night..very nice desk man, and good breakfast
- Brian (10/5): Safe Area, Nice Hotle - This hotel is an older building in a safe area of San Jose. The receptionist was a nice young man and they made eggs for breakfast. The wifi is a little weak on the second floor, but it works well downstairs. They have a cute dog too to play with. I would stay here again.
- Satish (10/5): Homely place to stay - The caretakers at the hotel were friendly, flexible, and helpful. The room was comfortable and sufficient for our purpose of a place to turn in for the night, leave our luggage, ate a shower and have breakfast. Nothing fancy, just functioanal.
- nalinie r. (8/5): Great one day stopover - The hotel was a one day stopover for me so I didn't spend much time just a few hours but the staff were very helpful.
- Istvan (2/5): Open minded hotel. - Great
- Verified traveler (10/5): Excellent location to anything down town. - Within blocks of national Museum, Namu Gallery, the Market, excellent coffee shops and restaurants. Clean comfortable and safe.
- Kris (6/5): Basic, clean hotel with helpful staff - We stayed at Kekoldi for one night on our way back from Northern Costa Rica. It's in a cute barrio with some beautiful old homes around. Keeping in mind that this hotel is a very budget friendly hotel, we were happy with the staff and the cute garden cafe where we could relax after all the travel. The staff helped us when we were in a pinch, gave us a map of the city and organized our transport to the airport very early in the morning. This was so helpful and kind.
The caveats to this hotel are that it is more of a hostel experience. The bed was falling apart and very uncomfortable and the shower offers a bit of liquid soap in a dispenser on the wall. Maybe ask to see the room ahead of time and bring your own toiletries and you'll be fine (we were able to get some shampoo packets for 100 colones or ~20 cents so no big deal). Also, keep in mind you are very close to downtown so if you are a light sleeper you might want to stay a bit further from the center.
- Luis A (8/5): Small, cozy, picturesque hotel, close to the city - Small, cozy, picturesque hotel, close to the city center, very friendly and helpful staff, nice warm breakfast, wifi in the main lobby
- Verified traveler (6/5): Inexpensive place for a night. - This is what u would expect at this price in this neighborhood. Nothing special but clean and secure. Staff was very helpfull and acomadating. Even made a local call for me to arrange a car rental with them picking me up from hotel. Place is very secure at night. I would stay again.
- Wayne (8/5): Overall a decent hotel for couples on a budget - The people and Hotel staff were very friendly. The breakfast was included and was a typical american style buffet. The overall area was decent but this would not be an area of town for a family and children. I would recommend this for couples that can do without some of the extra amenities.
- Gil (10/5): A delightful place to stay in - We enjoyed our stay very much. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Safety precautions were maintained all the time. I recommend it highly.
