- Timothy (10/5): - As previous reviews indicate, this is a wonderful setting, rivalling a Greek Island or even the Amalfi Coast in Italy. Beautiful view and accommodations. Very warm and friendly staff. Good food with many choices. Good hot water even with Solar. Would have liked internet access in the room and perhaps a little more attention to timely food delivery. We had a delightful stay!

Nestled on the banks of Lake Malawi, surrounded by beautiful landscape and amazing locals, it’s the most relaxing place we have been to in Africa. - diner682 (8/5): Lovely setting, attentive staff - Our stay here was recommended by friends in both the UK and Malawi and we were not disappointed. Being at the end of the rainy season the place was very quiet but we were very well looked after by the Malawian staff, especially Dixon who communicated regularly by Whatsapp so, with a bit of notice, we were able to eat & drink pretty much what we wanted when we wanted. The food was fine; the choice was good and it was just nice being able to eat on site every evening. We had a lakeside cottage which had beautiful views but was quite hot and humid at first then very windy with an overnight storm ; but I think the weather everywhere is so unpredictable now that these things are difficult to factor in. It was certainly cooler with a nice breeze up by the bar & restaurant. Certainly the stormy weather and the rising water level in the lake means the private beach is tiny with a slippery access over rocks ( take beach shoes ) but its still great being able to swim from your bedroom ! The adjacent ‘public’ sandy beach is lovely with calm water & a scattering of very friendly Malawians. Yes, some try desperately to sell locally made jewellery, paintings, wood carvings etc but their things are generally nice and not expensive so it’s good to buy something but then firmly say no more shopping. Sadly our planned boat trip was cancelled because of the storm but that didn’t spoil our visit; we still had a lovely relaxing time. Yes the place is a bit frayed round the edges and could benefit from some serious investment but that would mean rocketing prices in the current Malawian economy so you get what you pay for & overall we thought this was very good value for attentive service in a lovely setting. - James (6/5): - Pleasant lakeside cabins; very responsive staff; good prices; fantastic views of the lake. Beach consists of rocks; access road poor; located in a village which can be noisy. Owner very pleasant and accommodating. Clean, and would stay again, but not appropriate for a "luxury" lakeside stay.
- GRACE (10/5): - We enjoyed the scenary of the lake, the rhythm and sound of the lake was soothing Inside the chalet we were in needed a bit of maintenence especially the show tap was a bit rusty. All in all everything else was good.
- JustJess98 (6/5): A GEM IN NEED OF LOTS OF CARE - Travelled to Nkhatabay a few days ago and lodged at Njaya for 3 days. When we got there we were disappointed with the entrance area and the reception which looked unkept. We felt these areas needed a little more care. We were impressed with the room size because it gave us space to walk around and had extra space for all our baggage. The best thing was the views from the lake and the little private beach. We will definitely visit Njaya again because of the friendliest owners and down to the staff. They cared for us and made sure we were comfortable. Hope to visit again and see improvements made.
- Roam569258 (10/5): Fantastic eco-lodge on lake Malawi - A great destination for conscientious travellers, perfect to relax and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings of nikhata bay or as a base for several outdoor activities. Comfortable and beautiful lodges perched on the lakeshore hills, private beach access and great food choices. The staff is super kind and will help ensuring one can explore the surroundings comfortably and safely. And the british owner runs an impressive non-profit organisation that installs free solar systems on all of the schools in the district. So you know where your money is going!
- GundaBoy (8/5): Calm & Peaceful 🙏🙏🙏 - Cottage 4 with 2 rooms is ideal for a family with 4. Very spacious & overlooking the lake. Friendly staff to assist you. Delicious Food & a well stocked bar. For diving and fish eagle watching, don't forget to take a boat ride to Lisukwi Beach. Beautiful to watch fish eagle dive & grab prey
- 597glynl (10/5): Peace by the Lake - Njaya Lodge lies on the outskirts South of Nkhata bay and avoids all the hustle a bustle. A little bit more expensive than the “Back-packers” in the area but still small enough for the friendly staff to make sure you have a great stay. The lakeside rooms are clean and white-washed and there is back-up solar power if needed. Beautiful Sunrises over the lake that you can see from the comfort of your bed 😁.
- bigdcali (10/5): Paradise on Lake Malawi - We visited Njaya Lodge in Nov / 20 and had an amazing time. The staff worked hard to make sure we had delicious meals and a relaxing time. Dixon was amazing! We love the private beach and our room was overlooking the ocean. The boat trip to feed the fish eagles and snorkel was a highlight. This was our second visit to Njaya Lodge and we can't wait to return. We have four kids and they had the time of their life.
- D5410VBdianed (10/5): My time at Njaya Lodge - My husband and I do charitable work in Nkhata Bay. The village is about a 45 minute drive, however we choose to stay at Njaya.The price is fair and makes the trip doable.The staff there have become family to us and take very good care of when we are there. I love the views and the dogs....I don't miss mine as much when there. Dixon, Gilbert, Kingston Cornice, The Captain's son and on and on have been nothing but helpful, curtious and a joy. They allow me to make popcorn and ice tea and I share it with all of them. This is my home away from home! My husband and I enjoy the food, however becuase we are ther for a good lenth of time we will eat out to change it up a bit. When it's time to leave it is so diffacult...they really our my family. - malawi8 (8/5): back in 1999-2001 - This review is a little late..by about 22 years. I was a 45 yr old solo woman travelling around Malawi after having worked there for a year. I stayed 5 days at Njaya when the owners were back in Britain and an absolutely lovely couple were managing the place. Sorry to say I don't remember names very well but she was so good to me. I was invited by this couple a few times to join them on evening visits to other places. The staff were outstanding, and believe it or not I think Dixon was there then too and was exceptional..I always had a someone to play bao with and the food was fine. The bed was hard as the foamy was wearing thin but I loved my entire time there. I have thought of this place several times over the years and wondered how that couple temporarily managing the place made out.

- Simon (8/5): Amazing place - Although a bit run down it was impossible to fall in love with the location. Because we were on our honeymoon l had book the luxury lodge unfortunately we were one day late due to border problems then when we did arrive we were told our lodge had been booked out to others. however, the staff were lovely and after offering us numerous bottles of wine as compensation for the oversight.
- Albertnlsa (2/5): service and management were very bad! - the view was nice · service and management were very bad! First of all we did not get the room we booked, but we accepted because we hoped that would be the only thing that would go wrong. it should have been a deluxe and it was not! in short all that went wrong: *wrong room, no sitting area/options inside. *drinks not available, 5 minutes later another room gets a white wine we also tried to order, but was not on stock (lying) *breakfast took over 45 minutes to prepare. they knew we would be early, other guest left without breakfast because it took to long. * yoghurt in the bowl with muesli was just 1 spoon, not more *after the put us in the wrong room the had the nerve the next morning to move to the room we did not accept, becauce a other guest was not happy with his room. *second evening, same thing with the white wine, not for us, but for another table yes it was there. * wifi, the dongle was charging, in use or not working, we had no wifi during the 2 days. * the second manager was playing biljart on bear feet in short and a beer in his hand. * in the room nails where used to close doors and windows and where sticking out to hurt a guest. * the invoice was not correct when we left and again on wifi so we could not pay. the will send us the invoice i know when people start lying and trying to cover up in hotel or restaurant, i worked in the industry myself for over 30 years, and it makes that makes it for me the worst stay at a place for the last years of traveling. i can be a easy guest, but do not let me pay to much for incorrect service and do not ly to me
- shanykp (6/5): Lovely private beach needs work - The location of the hotel is amazing they have private beach just by the public one with sandy white sand just by the room, so you need to ask to be placed in the lake side. The room is basic but decent. Staff is helpful. We didn’t try the food as it was not welcoming and there are many options in town. The hotel needs some work and Nkhata bay during off season is nice but far from exciting- we felt one day would be enough
- CharmyArmy62 (2/5): What a shocker!! - We decided to eat at Njaya to judge it to see if we wanted to stay the night - thankfully we didn’t just check in!! Dixon the barman was a complete star throughout. The place desperately needs investment, with broken stuff everywhere, horrible grubby cushions, sticky furniture, badly cracked walls, filthy loo, loose wires hanging out of walls and even an abundance of plastic litter within a metre of the balcony. We had to pick our way through rubble, just to get into the premises. When we arrived there were 2 people sitting at a table blasting their music out so nobody could avoid it even from the other side of the restaurant - when we left I asked who they were to be told they were members of staff using the WiFi meant for the guests. The food, when it eventually arrived was epically awful - salad was rotten and inedible and the carbonara was clearly leftovers that had been microwaved (they didn’t have bacon so they substituted sausage!) - it was a solid mass without sauce, that took the shape of the bowl even once picked up on a fork - I only managed a few mouthfuls and even that made me feel ill. Not sure how they managed such a high Trip Advisor rating, but we’ll never return and nor will anyone else that asks us. SHOCKING!!
- Bewlbridge (2/5): Nasty, nasty, nasty - We couldn’t begin to describe how disappointed & disgusted we were by our experience. This lodge came highly recommended to us by some friends who stayed a few years ago. To say we were shocked is an understatement. The lodge is rundown, dirty & dusty. The decor is old, tired & broken. We ordered lunch from a basic menu & were told they didn’t have potatoes for chips to accompany the chicken burger, so I opted for salad (huge mistake). My satay sauce never arrived & my chicken was dry & tasteless. My partner’s meal was just as awful. It arrived as a congealed mess that had been microwaved. While we were trying to eat, we witnessed a rat run across the restaurant. At this point we cut our losses, paid the bill & left. However, as a plus we were served by a wonderful gentleman called Dickson who could not do enough to help.
- warm_heart_goddess (2/5): Racist owners - As go through the description of Njaya, i am appalled by their claim at working hand in hand with the locals and attempt to make money off of the idea of Malawian hospitality. I am a Malawian who enjoys exploring my beautiful country, last December i visited Njaya with my family. Till this day i am offended, disgusted and angry at the treatment my family received. The owner must have thought we cannot afford their services, he made it very clear our type was not welcomed there. After the waiter served us drinks we could hear him yelling asking why we were served drinks in glass cups we will break them or maybe steal them. He then instructed the waiter to provide us with the appropriate plastic cups befitting people of our kind. to our surprise he welcomed the white visitors warmly, serving them beverages in his much valued glassware. He also treats his employees with no respect. i just had to share my experience, its disgusting how people want to live and run businesses in Africa yet have such a backward opinion of its occupants. please include a whites only sign at the gate, thank you
- Barney909 (6/5): Beautiful Setting ..however - Stayed here for 5 nights. Beautiful quiet setting. Staff attentative and friendly. Food good always freshly cooked. The thing that lets this down is the shared public access to the beach through the property. The young locals like to chill out on the beach till late at night through to early morning. This makes it noisy The sellers of carvings and paintings don't take no for an answer and can be quite intimidating. It is such a shame. There are no security gates like in some other popular places nearby.
- Explore51167393176 (8/5): A LITTLE BIT OF PARADISE IN MALAWI - We stayed in a beach villa overlooking lake Malawi beside a sandy beach and swam in the warm waters of the lake. The staff were excellent, friendly and attentive. Food was very good and a good selection of drinks. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable.

- Navigate18646622490 (6/5): Calm and peaceful - We appreciated the quiet private beach at Nyanja Lodge, after a long travel to get there. Thanks for the very warm hospitality and kind staff going the extra mile to comfort us. The food was diverse and good. The beach cottages were beautiful, directly at the beach, with a nice view on the lake from the balkony. The lodge was nice for families. We did some beautiful activities on the lake, visited nearby village and maket, all calm and peaceful. Overall good value for money.
- Global61960097434 (10/5): Pleasant surprise - We had a comfy stay, the facilities were clean and secure. The lodge has amazing views and access to the lake and the great, attentive staff especially Kingston made our short stay so memorable. The Would love to go back for a longer vacation.
- JustinJ1408 (10/5): Wonderful Time at Njaya - We spent 4 Nights at this wonderful Place! The Beach Rooms have an amazing view! A few steps from the room you find a private beach. Thanks To the organised activities we were Able to do "rock jumbing "! A Special Highlight for us were the 2 private concerts! The Kitchen is Great ! Very Kind Team!
- Verified traveler (4/5): Nice view, poor service - Hotel with a lot of potential but unfortunately not much service to go with it. Our room (beach cottage) had a nice view but there was no hot water for our entire stay and we had to deal with plenty of spiders and ants in the room (which can be expected in this part of the world). The internet was down on the first day but it more or less worked afterwards. Obviously, there was no coverage in the room. The food was average at best and they mostly didn't have what was offered on their menu. The price of the food and beverages was ridiculously expensive for the place, so were other services (e.g. laundry). Also, the price of activites offered was more than twice the price of what we paid in another lodge nearby. Plus, the visa machine didn't work so we had to pay in cash. That said, we really enjoyed the beach and our room. The lodge is a bit far from the village and the port (30min walking), but is makes it more like a secret place. Still, the staff were kind...
- Adam (10/5): Beautiful cliffside lodge right by the beach - We only planned to stay 2 nights here over Christmas, but the setting, staff and owners were all so nice that we had to extend by two more. Dixon, Gilbert and Kingston are all fantastic characters that really make you feel welcome and add that family vibe. Thanks also to Paul and Collette for making us feel that much more at home. We'll be back for sure.
- Charl (4/5): not impressed. - 1. booked and paid on website for most expensive rooms. rooms not as advertised. 2. wifi not working. 3. no cold drinks, little ice, could not make a plan to get more ice. 4. credit card machine badly operated by pulling out card while still in operation and immediately pushed it back. sms on my phone as paid, but machine printed declined. had to pay again, and therfore another sms. paid twice? will see if they will refund me?

- Helen (10/5): - Place was very quiet as it was low season when we stayed. Very helpful staff, friendly atmosphere. Food simple but fine. Would stay again. Good value room, breakfast and coffee a bit overpriced
- Bill (8/5): Great spot next to beach - What a pleasure! We had booked for 1 night but came back for a second. Terrific staff made us extremely welcome. Lovely jubly! . It is a great spot overlooking the lake,which was a good place to swim. Would recommend. Like all Malawi,getting a little tired!
