Guest Reviews
- Guest (8/5): It was satisfying - Good If the hotel didn't Burn down. My belongings were burned and had to run with my life. I'm hoping I can get compensation for this
- Shauna (2/5): (Disappointed Status) Wild Ginger Hotel, Big Island Hawaii - The bed was somewhat comfortable and had a soft blanket on top of the bed. I came here for my birthday and I am very disappointed. For the price this should have been a very nice and well kept place. It was night time when we arrived I asked a head of time for a great view. Upon arrival there was very little to no parking. We couldn't get into our room with the key that was provided; I was told to use the side of a credit card and turn the key lock to open the door due to the keys not working. The room appears nice looking, but the room is very tiny, the size of a small child's room. There is NO hot water that comes from any faucets in the room. Outside the room Rotted flooring with floor mats covering them up, holes in the flooring with mats covering them up. Roofing looks bad. The fire extinguishers are barrowed and expired and not up to code, out dated. There is no hot water for showers or from a faucet in the bathroom. If you want hot water then you have to use a public shower house. When I went to the front desk to ask about these issues no one was available to resolve issues. Office was closed from 11pm-7am; there was a phone number to get a hold of someone it rang in the office where NO one is on duty. I was looking around and found a piece of paper typed out. (I will take pic.)
- Jessica (5/5): I loved the place, those vegan musubis were amazing. Just the water issues killed the vibe. - Loved the native plants and vintage look. That there was no hot or even warm water and on the 2nd day there was no water. We also had to tighten the fan light because it was getting loose and the light wouldn’t turn on.
- Dotsie (4/5): - Parking area is broken, room is very dirty, old flooring is unsafe. Shower is dirty, no hot water. Extremely loud road sounds, brled an pillows are terrible. This was called a premium room!
- Eric (8/5): - The walls are pretty thin so I'm glad there was no television.
- Matthew (10/5): - Great accommodations. Staff was extremely helpful.
- Dan (6/5): - It seemed safe the bed was not great no AC older place breafast was poor
Would not stay there again.
- Fetuoleaniva (8/5): - Yes
- Guest (10/5): None - Its a good place ❤️ None
- Mark (2/5): - Location was fine the place should be condemned. No hot water no a/c old mattresses rotted wood no TV building code violations, two numerous to mention not worth the money do not stay there
- matthew (2/5): False advertising - Never checked in. Unsafe and dirty with dog coming into our room
- Jiyang (4/5): - There are enough parking spot for the hotel which is one of the good things, but the area around the hotel doesn’t look safe at all. The room conditions are not the same as shown in photos. In addition, there are windows but no curtains for them. If you really love nature, you can probably take this since the crickets were singing all night and they were really loud.
- NATALIIA (2/5): - The worst hotel. I absolutely do not recommend that to anyone
- Shazara (2/5): - Unsafe and dirty everything broken and dirty
- Danae (6/5): - The beds are so bad. They feel like they are as old as the building. You can literally feel each spring poking out. Worst mattress I have ever tried to sleep on. There was no hot water in the shower even let it run hot only for 30 minutes then decided not to waste any more water and had an ice cold shower at 11 pm.
- Chantal (10/5): - Great poperty
- Sara (9/5): - The place feels very homey, the receptionist was lovely and they have a super cute lobby. No ac in the rooms, was a little run down
- Zyshonne (10/5): -
- Jose (8/5): - Felt like part of landscape that is Hawaii
- Ramiro Jose (2/5): - Window broken, no window in the bathroom, no hot water in the shower. Dirty. Charge of 25 $ for a 25x25 cm towel that they could not clean.
- Sira (8/5): - Acceptable breakfast, though completely vegan. Lush foliage on the property. Friendly staff.
Absence of hot wain the rooms a definite minus.
The place looks like it could disappear into the vegetation any day
- walter (4/5): - The staff was really nice
- Samuel (10/5): - Very affordable.
- Bachir (4/5): Not the right one - No AC and one window had no glass. You could hear the bug sounds all night long. If you sound sensitive you will not be able to sleep. Shower takes about 1/2 hr hot water and yes all that water wasting for 1/2 hr. Pay a little more and stay somewhere else.
- Chengyang (10/5): - Walking distance to bus terminal,
- William (8/5): - Bed was nice
- Crystal (6/5): Website photos misleading - As stated, historical, 100 yrs old. In need of many updates, floor slants so drawers won’t shut on cabinets. Shower to room would not even get luke warm after the 20 minutes of running it. I feel like the website pictures are very misleading. When we arrived, it was not at all what I had expected and when I went to check in-I had asked the lady if I could please look at room and was told yes, after I gave her my iD and credit card for payment. I was confirmed that I was paying regardless . Breakfast was good.
- Gaylyn (10/5): - If you expect resort atmosphere, this is not for you. If you enjoy quiet and simple it’s perfect!
- Sophia (8/5): - I absolutely loved the nature surrounding the hotel and the over all vibes. It was very comfy and I felt safe. The shower room
- Perry (8/5): - Service was great! Very kind and respectful. Rooms are clean and nice. You definitely get bang for your buck. Breakfast is good. Walls are a little thin but its not bad. I enjoyed my stay and had lots of fun. Rooms feels very homey
- Anaïs (10/5): - good.
- Laura (10/5): - First off I’d really loved that. This was a very old and traditional type of hotel, which is why we booked it. The paint jobs were pretty poor but again understandably the garden was beautiful open large windows. Listening to the Coke frogs all night was pretty nice.. The fruit was fresh so was the coffee the pastries not so much could’ve done without them as they were like bulk bought. Yes unfortunately the building to the back looks like it fell into the cauldron of little mini forest behind it. But all in all I was happy with the facility. Only thing that would have been a bit more friendly I guess is that we would’ve gotten at least half of our first night back. Due to natural disaster of the tsunami, we could not get to the island cause all flights were canceled until the next day so if they want to give us half the nights it would be very grateful
- Tami (2/5): - The property should be condemned. Lots of dry rot wood & broken structures with holes inthe walls.. The roof is rotten, the wooden floors planks feel like you could go through the floor any minute. It was advertised as a $300 room with “a great discount.” All lies! It’s not worth $25.00 a night. The pics weren’t accurate. We didn’t stay there and had to find another hotel last minute. Trying to get a refund. Buyer be aware!
- Anne (8/5): - Nice place affordable
- Joe (10/5): - If you like Sailor Jerry, Donovan's Reef, and vintage tiki aesthetic, you'll enjoy Wild Ginger. Yes it really takes 20 minutes for hot water and there's no a/c, but the rates are reasonable, rooms are clean and breezy, staff are nice, and parking and continental breakfast free. The hotel was built in 1911 (16 years before the Royal Hawaiian) and the new owners are working hard to keep it nice. Enjoy the ceiling fans, coqui frogs, and 5 minute walk to downtown because you won't find another place like it in Hawaii.
- Ralph (2/5): - I was charged the full amount for two days after I cancelled my reservation with this hotel. Rather then a one night cancellation fee I paid for the entire two days.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - It is an 100 plus years building so as you can imagine nothing works. Windows can’t be closed. No running water from the shower. Carpet was so old so it was not flat anymore and I almost trip and fell. The bathroom light bulb was broken and I had to request multiple times before they were willing to change a light bulb for me. We were not able to sleep during the night due to the broken window and the traffic outside was loud. We left the property right after the nearby Starbucks opened. It was a horrible experience for us and I would not recommend this place to anyone.
- Marlene (10/5): - I got the superior suite because I wanted a balcony, king bed and my own bathroom. I can say it was not disappointing. The time I was in the room, it was peaceful and quiet. It may not be a fancy hotel but for me I do like small, quiet, peaceful, unbothered vibes. Also, I had a late check in...on a tsunami threat day, so office was closed but I didn't check my messages till later because of all the chaos, Makana, the manager, assured me that they left my key for me in the lock box. Yay! I sure did love my stay.
- Petra (10/5): - Convenient location and good price.
- Diana (2/5): Uncomfortable - The place looked like it was falling apart. The paint were peeling. The flooring felt like it was not leveled, felt like I was going to fall thru. The pictures on the website did not match the actual Hotel. It felt very creepy.
- WEI (10/5): - A good choice to stay just near Hilo downtown
- Guest (4/5): - Coqui frogs and traffic noise kept waking us up. Windows don't close, and there's no AC so closing windows probably would get stuffy.
- andrea (10/5): - Great island stay
- Dharmesh (8/5): - Just perfect for my need
- Richard (10/5): - The staff was very nice and the price was affordable! I would stay there again!
- Otis (10/5): - Loved all of the staff members. Always tentative and friendly
- Deidra (10/5): - Loved every moment
- Rito (10/5): - The frogs at night is music
- Giacomo (6/5): - Place was good, but desperately needs work on. Not all rooms look like the pictures and they need a deep and thorough clean. Staff were great and very friendly.
- CHIDA (10/5): - Different but nice
- Guest (8/5): The renovated room was a very welcome surprise! - The newly renovated room with the king bed was terrific. It was such a cozy and comfortable room with nice upgrades, especially in the bathroom.
- Frank (6/5): - Very old hotel, basic rooms, ours had some good fans, a fridge, and was clean, could have used a couple more pillows, and there was no hot water. Walking distance from old Hilo.
- Wendy (10/5): - The person at the front desk she is very nice overall a great experience it is an old school Hawaiian hotel so I was not expecting a lot.
- norimichy (2/5): - Worst experience ever . Need my money back
- Anonymous (5/5): We got what we paid for. Grateful they were available during this busy season - Quiet and private Booked for two people only receive items for one person.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Relaxing
- Chris (6/5): Adequate - A little pricey for what it was.
Makela was pleasant and as accommodating as she could be.
But Covid is over…when are hotels in general going to staff back up and provide customers with reasonable check-in times?
- Regina (8/5): Very good -
- Aranda (10/5): Exceptional - Sala was excellent, very hospitable and helpful. You are lucky to have employees like her!
- Donald (2/5): - This hotel should not e on any site . The parking g is terrible-no designated spots, We were warned by local people that it was unsafe & the backside looked terrible -rotten curtains & rotten looking wood
- Deidra (10/5): - Love the staff at this property. Always friendly, always around, and always with a smile.
Mahalo nui
- Deidra (10/5): - Thank you
- Nicole (2/5): - I wish I were writing a different kind of review. Due to a flight delay and mechanical issue, I missed check-in at Wild Ginger. I called and messaged several times while stuck in Denver. I was told I’d only be charged for one night—which I understood—but I was billed for all three.
Because the hotel doesn’t have 24-hour staff and their virtual check-in must be arranged ahead of time, driving two hours in the dark after nearly 20 hours of travel, with no guarantee of entry, wasn’t safe or realistic. Expedia tried contacting the hotel multiple times and received no response.
I chose Wild Ginger to support a local, welcoming space instead of a big chain, but I was left out of pocket with no support—even with trip insurance. I did everything I could to communicate and resolve this. It’s incredibly disappointing.
- Emanuel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michele (5/5): Passable - Breakfast was good 👍 Property needs work. Things are broken and in need of repairs. However, if you're looking for old Hawaii, this is close 👌
- Detlef (1/5): Bad - Filthy place, mold growing in bathroom, lock almost fell out of door, etc.
- Venus (8/5): - I love the Wild Ginger Inn, I grew up here on the Big Island so the plantation style rooms feel just like home for me. Might not be everyone's cup of tea but if your looking for a room, place to shower, and clean comfortable bed for an affordable price it does the job.
- Deidra (10/5): - Love the staff and the area!!! ❤️❤️❤️
- Rachy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hongjun (2/5): - We left immediately after check in to the room. the room was not nearly as shown from the picture. The lock does not really work, broken windows, no AC, the room looks terrible. My wife does not feel safe, we quickly booked another hotel and left. The money was totally wasted. We took some pictures of the room as painful reminders
- Monserrat (5/5): Passable - the breakfast was original and delicious the bed was not comfortable and overall an humidity smell invade the atmosphere
- Jayden (8/5): Very good -
- Giulia (5/5): Passable -
- Ashley (10/5): - Nice staff. The bed was big and comfortable but the shower could use some work. The bathroom window was facing a nice forest with a home behind it and it didn’t have a curtain blocking that window. Also shower curtain is blocking your body but had an open netting at the top which you can still see because the shower is a bit raised. I threw my towel over and I was fine. For a quick stay it’s great. everything else was very clean and had no problems
- Alexis (2/5): - The worst Hotel I’ve ever been to. The sheets where dirty, dirty socks laying on the floor, no a/c, the door seem like with one push it will open up, no hot water in the room and no toilet paper. If you are use to living out side this is the economical hotel for you. I literally checked in and checked back out after 10 minutes.
- Sally (2/5): “Vintage” equals falling apart - This was a last moment decision and I regret it. The owners/staff are trying REALLY HARD but they just need to tear it down and start over.
- Anonymous (4/5): Horrible. - Had to leave before breakfast was served or any staff on duty. Cute towel arrangement on bed. Sheets were clean, The bathroom window had no glass just screen and moths kept coming in. No curtain so with the light on, anyone could see in. No air-conditioner and the fan didn't work. No hot water. We let it run over 20 minutes, still no hot water. Two people checked in, only one towel had to go ask for a second one.
- Sorensen (3/5): Horrible - The birds were noisy all night, also the frogs
Hot water in shower takes half hour to become hot, some of us has to take cold shower
Would not stay here in the future.
- Yano (5/5): enjoyed the stay - comfort stay shower, cold
- Mary (6/5): - It is very cute and old fashioned, with alot of Hawaiiana flavor but missing some important upgrades. Hot water is a problem, there's no tv and no air conditioning, although the fans were adequate. Staff is lovely and personable.
- Jennifer (10/5): - The hotel is older and a little run down, but that was no surprise as they were very clear on the condition. Given that, it’s very clean and I had no concerns about the bed linens or towels. It all added to the character!
It’s located just a few blocks from downtown which was fantastic, but I didn’t feel totally comfortable with the area to walk there by myself at night so I just drove.
- Ken (4/5): Disappointing -
- Sanchez (2/5): Very poor -
- Audrina (2/5): - Photos did not show true state of the place.
- Mihojevich (1/5): Never again will I stay there. Would you? - The building is falling apart. Late in the evening when someone stomped by my room shook. Theres no chair in the room? Come on, I paid over a hundred dollars for a building that is falling apart, Ive had back surgery and have trouble with walking up stairs and requested to be on the bottom floor and money wasnt a option? The sheets were clean. The cats that visited were sweet. The morning food was good. The building is falling apart, its dumpty.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Charming but noisy - Charming old building, but it needs some love. The bathroom door got stuck shut twice b/c the door catches on the frame. The bed was comfy and the shower pressure was good. Main reason for less than 5 stars is crappy neighbors with lots of yelling. The windows are single pane so we got "serenaded" by coqui frogs and could hear the planes coming into Hilo airport.
- Tucker (4/5): Very disappointing - I originally liked the discounted price It was very disappointing. I got the Superior Room and made the unfortunate assumption that there would be a TV but there was none. The room was small with only a few feet of space around the bed, only a sheet and blanket with no bedspread, one wall window didn’t close so there was not much sound privacy. Not having a TV ruined the birthday plans of staying up late to watch movies. The staff made me pay for 2 of 3 nights even though I checked out at 7:45 am the next morning. Sorely disappointed and would not Recommend.Don’t be fooled by the sale price unless you’re truly not wanting much but to sleep.
- Alison (9/5): Superb - It was just as it was advertised an old quaint Hawaiian place. The staff was very friendly and attentive to our needs. The room was clean and the breakfast was fabulous.
- Jack (10/5): Exceptional - Stayed here one night for the merrie monarch festival. I was able to book this place last minute. It did the job. Can’t complain.
- Richard (4/5): - At first the property seemed very cozy but once inside our room we found that the walls were paper thin, the showers were ice cold no matter how long you let the water run and we were only able to get 1 towel. After leaving the hotel early we were promised a refund for the last 2 days of our trip which 3 days later is still nowhere to be seen. Aside from the beachfront view this place doesnt have much going for it and has alot of work to do if they want to keep future guests happy. 3 out of 10.
- Sheena (5/5): Passable -
- Scribner (1/5): DO NOT GO HERE!!!! - Not a single thing we didn't even stay. We checked in at 5:00pm went to dinner and returned at 7:15pm asked the staff to change rooms. She said they were full. So I asked her for a refund and she said sorry you already paid. We tried to stay but my 75 YO mother started having breathing issues and coughing. We left at 3:47am. The place is falling over, it smelled of mold and mildew, the room was full of cockroaches and termites, the staff was very unfriendly and refused to give us our money back. Worst place we have ever tried to stay at.
- Dc (5/5): Passable -
- Smith (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kathy (10/5): We were not sure what to expect! The reviews seemed dark!!! We were of course pleasantly surprised! - We were very surprised by all of the delicious choices. Everything we could possibly want!!! Very impressed! Nothing
- thomas (4/5): - The TV didn’t work the fan shut up when you turn off the light and the floor was uneven
- Arni (2/5): Terible - I have never stayed in worse place.
- Francis (2/5): Very poor - Easy to find, downtown Hilo 1. Dirty
2. Picture of the room retouched apparently and having little to do with reality.
3. No air conditioning ( a must there)
4. Broken windows, no blinds, no privacy
5. Even after half an hour, still no hot water, we washed with cold water.
6. Don’t try reaching them the phone number provided in booking.com does not work
7. They have no reception after 19:00….
8. They have a free breakfast… none can eat their eggs…
9. And so on….
- Andrei (2/5): - It was the worst experience ever. The building is literally falling apart, clogged drains, no AC, NO Bathroom WINDOW (lots of mosquitoes), dirty lobby and lots of really weird people. 0/10
- Donna A. (10/5): - I love the old Hawaiian look that the Wild Ginger Hotel provides. There were no fancy pictures or decorations but what they did have, gave me a sense of old Hawaii. I enjoyed every bit of staying there and I plan on staying there again.
