Guest Reviews
- bogi1995 (8/5): Nice hotel in the very center - Situated in the very center of Bissau, next to the main street and close to either Praca Imperio or harbour.
The rooms are spacious and clean, a huge roof garden allows hanging around. But unfortunately there is no restaurant or bar that would make the stay on that terrace even more pleasant. But no worries: Just on the opposite of the road is a very good restaurant...or even two (I just tried one ot them)!
I think that Coimbra is really an affordable hotel in the center of the capital; it might not compare to high standard hotels around the world, but you even do not pay for a high standard hotel. The staff is polite and helpful.
- James (2/5): - Waaaaaay overpriced. Old. Poor infrastructure. Old, noisy AC. WiFi terrible. Shower broken and leaky. Not worth the price. Sorry.
- P (10/5): Comfortable stay in Bissau - It was a nice hotel in the heart of Bissau, comfortable and convenient. The breakfast and dinner menu was great with local and Portuguese cuisine. The staff were helpful. But the contact details on Hotels.com were too sketchy with no e-mail address and a single telephone number which was not responding. Because of this I could n't contact them for Airport shuttle.
- Joao1900 (4/5): coimbra hotel, bissau - Clean, spacious rooms with AC; regular breakfast. However a inefficient, indifferent, helpless, almost hostile receptionist(s) where, by contract with the travel agente, they had to organize our transfer(s) in Bissau. They where more interested on the tv program then in the customers needs. The home driver was the helpful one.
The same panorama returning to the hotel from the islands. And because it was the 1st January every body was out except the guard in the front door and the helpless receptionist. Customers had to go out for food and drinks and return to the hotel. As a doctor I spent many Christmas and New Eve working dreaming to be outside with family and friends. But I never missed my duties with the patients. "Serviços mínimos" does it mean something to you? Definitely this historic hotel deserves a better management.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - I paid nearly 150 USD a night for a room with no natural light. The check in staff short and did not believe me when I informed them their website was down (as if it was my problem). Some staff are quite friendly, the restaurant is tasty and the breakfast is one of my favorites in Africa. Still, I can't help feeling that they need to step up their game. This was my third stay.
- MarkusB2945 (2/5): did not stay longer than a day - I just spent one week in Bissau and had booked this hotel for 6 nights. after the first night, I left as
- the place smells badly
- there s no spot with air condition except within your room
- the rooms are old, the beds unconfortable
- the food, particularly breakfast is not good - no fruits, no vegetables
- the aircon and fridge are very old and make therefore a lot of noise.
- you CANNOT pay with cards
- the WIFI doe snot work (comes and goes - not possible to even charge a website)
- above all, what was most irritating was the service.
Despite my fluent portuguese, the people at the reception could not care less about my stay. So, certainly not recommendable.
- MikaelBjorn (10/5): Top notch service at a centrally located hotel - Travelling on business to countries like GB - one can't be sure that everything will run smoothly, But at Coimbra Hotel and Spa it all went so smoothly and well. First of all - the building is awesome! An architects dream. Check their restaurant's windows in P Mondrian style - very stylish. The building with the rooms are also very cosy and quiet. Free airport transport is an extra plus since many 4 star GB hotels charges 5 000 CFX/single! Coimbra is labeled as a 3 star but service is really 5 star. And don't worry about the language, even if not all of them speak English - they will fetch one of their colleagues who can. Food is more than decent, and please stay and use their buffet style lunches and dinners with 3 different options every day and lovely deserts. Food is very fresh and good. However, there's one thing that the management could change - and that is the music played in the restaurant. Since I was there for 2 x lunch and dinner - I heard the same CD played all over and over again, and I'm not a fan of Celine Dion to start with:) Be proud and play local music from GB instead and/or change CD daily like a rota. And also, a relief for the staff there who really have to listen to this CD all the time. If you're looking for hotels - and I've stayed at many - not in GB but in other African countries - you can't get any better in Bissau.
- Russell (10/5): Great Location - Great location and service. My preferred hotel when in Bissau.
- adrian (6/5): convenient and characterful - Had character and charm but hopelessly overpriced considering lack of facilities
- theWorldofJose (10/5): Central, great food and amazing staff support. - Hotel Coimbra is centrally located in a very quiet and safe area of Bissau. The hotel provides full board and it has a restaurant with a very good variety of meal options in the ground floor. Airport shuttles and other transportation can be arranged. The staff is amazingly friendly and helpful in sorting out other services needed (i.e. cash exchange)
- newtoncampos (6/5): Safe and well located but buggy. - The hotel is safe and well located. Staff is good. The transfer to/from hotel always work and you have a cold bottle of mineral water waiting for you in the fridge. The wifi barely works in peak hours but electricity is stable. When it comes down, the generator is immediately turned on. The shower works and the water is clean (don't drink, of course). In general you feel good at Coimbra. The breakfast is not good but has mineral water, bread, cake and butter. I just get annoyed sometimes with quite a number of cockroaches and other strange local bugs I find in its rooms after a hard day of work. But you get over that when your "doing-business-in-remote-places" mode is on. :-)
- FernandoA608 (8/5): Excellent location and staff - I generally agree with the previous reviews. I would like to add that the historic building where the hotel is located is quite charming and quaint. The suites are modern and spacious (I would highly recommend them over regular rooms). The buffet style restaurant is one of the best eating destinations in town. It is very popular with locals as well as with foreign residents and visitors. The hotel is strategically located near the old historic downtown, the port, and the city business center. There are a number of nice restaurants nearby at walking distance (including across the street). The multilingual staff is extremely professional, friendly, and helpful. They are always eager to answer your questions and find solutions for issues that may arise. I've stayed there twice now and would stay there again on future trips top Guinea-Bissau.
- psureshrao (6/5): Calm and not a bad place to stay - I would say its like a guest house not a hotel, Rooms are old but every thing was working. Breakfast is dinner was okay. There is small restaurant in front of this hotel which is bit expensive but food was fresh and okay. I saw some other good looking hotels in town but i observed that most of the outsiders preferring this hotel.
- WorldAdventurr (8/5): Safe, central, and great facilities! - I picked Coimbra Hotel because of its good rating and central location. Not knowing much about Bissau going in, I'm glad I made the right choice. Coimbra is a small oasis in the center of a very basic city. Here's what made it stand out for me:
Location: Right next to the cathedral and near the main sights for tourists (though there aren't really many tourists).
Facilities: The hotel has everything you can need in the city including a gym, spa, turkish bath, terrace to relax, and even conference rooms for business events.
Restaurant: Great restaurant with international selection of food which is popular with locals and hotel guests. Fun buzz going on in the evenings.
Rooms: The rooms are basic, but have a charm to them especially with the large balconies overlooking the city.
Overall, this is a great choice for Bissau and I would definitely stay again!
- Piepergrunz (6/5): Hotel OK but not good value for money - Not that Bissau offers much choice in hotels of higher standard... this one is ok, safe but definitely not good value for money! On the plus side: rooms are quite big, are cleaned every day, bathroom spacy, water in shower excellent. The fridge in the room was very noisy, so I turned it off but then water runs out over the floor... Breakfast was ok but could be better, considering the room price of E130. Nice terrace to have breakfast outside. Good Wifi, although slow at some moments... The free transfer to/from the airport was reliable even in the middle of the night. No pool.
- phillkentuk (8/5): Review of Restaurant - Great all you can eat - including wine.
Popular with ex-pats and groups. Great selection of main courses and pud's and you really can eat whatever you like. we only had the option of red wine for free, but it was really good, and kept coming!
There is a fun mask wall as well. a mix of super cool modern and traditional.
- ZwarteKater (10/5): Best hotel in town - If I knew about this hotel before I came to Bissau (first trip, had to rely on other people's feedback), I would have gone there from day one. It's the best value in town (I visited all the decent hotels there were, so believe you me when I say this). Well kept, very clean, right in the centre of the town but very calm at the same time. I paid 10,000 FCFA less for a superior room there than in the Azalai hotel (which apparently is 5 star, don't buy it). The room was great. Super clean, modern, well equiped. Everything was functioning, very clean sheets and towlels. I just loved it. It may sound a bit too enthusiastic, but having tried several other hotels, when I came there I just felt happy. Excellent breakfast, beautiful salon and rooms, terrace with green plants and comfortable chairs and tables, and the restaurant is just next door (6000 CFA, about 10 EUR you get full buffet drinks included, can't beat that). It's right in the center, there's Ecobank next door, a couple of shops where you can buy anything you need (water, shampoo, food, etc) and there's a lovely bookshop downstairs. All in all, great experience, next time I go there, no hesitation from my side - Coimbra Hotel. oh yes, the WiFi was great even in the rooms and staff was nice (although sometimes you had too look for them but they were not far away, I am speaking about the reception person). No cards accepted (just like everywhere else in Bissau).
- mmauleon (2/5): Worst Experience Ever Have! - I have been around Africa, staying in crappy hotels paying 3 Euros per night (in the most remote areas, without electricity or water). Well, this hotel is consider the best of Bissau. The single rooms are old, dirty, the smell of the restaurant´s chammine enters in the suites rooms upstairs, the staff is not correct with you (90%), breakfast low standard.. and is very expensive. The building itself is wonderful and it could be a high stander hotel. The problem is that they not invest in the hotel. I will not enter in details about my experience but I will never sleep here. The only positive point is the kindness of 2 staff.
- JoburgFacey (8/5): Best breakfast in Bissau, but a bit noisy at night - This old-school Portuguese hotel is safe, clean, comfortable. Some rooms are larger than others but the bathrooms are all modern and clean. Some rooms face opposite an outdoor bar under trees across the street, where music goes on until 4 am. The othe rooms have less charm and face the interior courtyard. The breakfast buffet is great, definitely better than the Azalai. I would dvise against the other meals though - rather stroll across the road or round the corner, there are plenty of great reataurants in walking distance. Internet - in the reception area, not rooms - is variable here as it is everywhere in Bissau. The gym and sauna are in a windowless basement, pretty grim.
- Brussels_BelgiumMyr (6/5): Nice but noisy and should be refreshed - Nice hotel but the air-conditioning is really noisy. That's awful if you want to enjoy the terrace. Service could be enhanced: the TV was not working well and it took them 3 days to fix the issue, the shower is leaking and the cleaning guy didn’t pass by every day… Breakfast is fine; fitness is in the basement and quite screaming. The small restaurant on the other side of the street is good. Wifi not available in the rooms.
- gionita (8/5): Oasis in the heart of Bissau - One of the top hotels in Bissau. With quasi 24 hr electricity, internet. Nice breakfast and dining facilities. Gym and sauna are a plus. Being a top choice of travelers, it also represents a meeting hub of professionals who visit Guinea Bissau.
- RichardL318 (10/5): This is a great haven in Bissau - Bissau is a city that is having many problems and this hotel is a haven in the middle of the crisis. The rooms where always clean and the staff is very kind. Breakfast is well served and the meals in the restaurant are also good. The only inconvenience is that as Bissau has serious power shortages the generator makes a lot of noise and in some rooms it is an inconvenience. The other thing is that on weekends they turn it off for a couple of hours and if it is a hot day it is not very pleasant. In the fitness center nothing is working properly.
