Guest Reviews
- RobCola2026 (10/5): Valentines Day Excursion - Was a wonderful place to stay warm on a severely cold Valentines weekend. Great staff, nice accommodations. The MacArthur restaurant is a must. The Sunday brunch goes above and beyond. Valet parking attendees were exceptional. Views of the Hudson River are nice. We would stay again.
- 54EOD (6/5): Plenty of history but dated - The Hotel Thayer is the only game in town if you hope to be close to the USMA. The hotel is filled with history but is dated. We had a a king bed room that was small, cold and right over the railroad running north-south ( noisy). For so reason, the power shuts off whenever you leave the room, thus the room was about 60 when we returned after dinner. Although it eventually warms up, it cools down over night - with the bathroom tiles floor about the temp of ice.
The toilet was partially under the vanity and the TP almost impossible to reach unless you were a contortionist.
The bar was great, breakfast decent but everything was over priced.
- kmc20002019 (10/5): Annual Holiday Visit Was Wonderful - My family visits West Point each year during the holidays, and we always stay at The Thayer Hotel. We enjoy the historic charm of the hotel, and it is decorated beautifully for the holiday season. An extra bonus this year was meeting Santa in the lobby and having pictures taken with him. Dinner at MacArthur's Riverview Restaurant was delicious, and service was outstanding. The buffet breakfast offered at General Patton's Tavern on Sunday morning was good, but we noticed that several of the offerings from our past visits were not included this year (additions for the oatmeal, selection of fresh fruit), and this was disappointing. Our room was very clean and comfortable, and the young man who helped us with our luggage and got our vehicle when we checked out was pleasant and provided excellent customer service.
- thomassJ1245UE (10/5): Arianna was very helpful. - Everyone at the Hotel were wonderful to work with. I want to Highlight Arianna who works in the gift shop.
Since this was my first visit, Arianna helped me to learn about the hotel and the West Point visitors center.
I was very grateful that she took the time to help me.
Arianna was also helped me make a purchase at the gift shop.
This is the kind of employee that you want to have as an employee.
She was very knowledgeable, and polite.
- Hankretired (10/5): Great visit. Cannot wait for return visit. - Stay was outstanding, From check-in in to check out staff was very courteous and professional. The room was great and views awesome. Highly recommend dining in MacArthurs restaurant. The food and waitresses were great. Food made to order -suggest the Filet Mignon. Kudos to the Executive Chef.
- curtinjrd (10/5): awesome and interesting. - 2nd time visit for thanksgiving staying at The Thayer Hotel. Room is clean and comfortable. Hotel staff are professional and friendly. Price is very reasonable. The restaurant food was plentyful, hot and tasty. The servers were very good and quick. Great stay.
- 123RichS (10/5): The Historic Thayer Hotel: It Does Not Get Any Better Than This! - We truly enjoy attending at least one Army football game, annually, which has been a long-standing, family tradition for almost 75 years. This year my wife and I spent the weekend at the Thayer Hotel, which is absolutely beautiful, as was our large room. Our family members joined us on Saturday, with our son and grandson, in addition to two very close friends, joining me at the football game. Following the game, our wives, and our daughter's family met us at the Zulu Bar, a large beautiful outdoor patio area with small fire- pits to help retain warmth, and we ordered drinks and dinner there, all of which were very much enjoyed by all. All Thayer employees are so very helpful, knowledgeable, and caring. What an outstanding experience.
- annaf894 (10/5): Beautiful weekend at Thayer - We stayed for two nights for my daughter's wedding. The room we stayed in was furnished nicely, cozy, welcoming and clean. The light that came through in the morning was spectacular. The bed was comfortable. I appreciated the full length mirror in the bathroom (made dressing for the occasion easier). The valet team was accommodating and gracious. We had a van load of wedding decor, etc. and their assistance was much appreciated. The front desk staff were all patient and helpful. We had dinner at the MacArthur restaurant. The meal was delicious. We look forward to our next stay. The tough decision is whether we choose to return during autumn or the summer.
- jolC1727JU (6/5): The vision was better than reality sadly - The place is nice but we spent 600 a night for two nights. I would have expected more for that price. We were in an executive King suite. I feel some glassware and mugs would have been nice over take away cups. Horrible customer service at the tavern restaurant. We were ignored and when I finally asked how we order (knowing full well how to) the waiter says oh I thought you were already helped. He was the only one working so not sure why he thought that. I was surprised at the breakfast. Again, I expected more. I should have managed my expectations. It’s aa good location. I’m able to go on grounds as a Naval officer and really enjoyed West Point, so for that the hotel worked fine. If I had known what I know now, I would’ve got a place in town. If management reads this, I’m happy to give you my 2 cents but too much to write.
I will say that I think your staff could benefit from customer service class. Maybe read a book on Disney or Google on how to make a customer feel like they are welcome and not a bother.
- karenmoto2014 (10/5): Don't need a special event to stay at The Thayer - Prior to arrival, I corresponded with Alison Clark - reservation manager a number of times. I inquired about off property salon services and accommoda tion preferences. We had forgotten an item upon check out. I had called reporting it and hadn't heard back. So I reached back out to Alison, who was able to track it down and had it mailed to us within days. She is a gem.
I must add the guys valeting and handling luggage were a delight, so polite and professional.
The room was beyond acceptable. I want their pillows!
- Brenda (10/5): - Historic hotel with plenty of things to do
- James (6/5): - Wonderful, historic hotel with lots of charm and unique architecture. I can’t say anything negative about the hotel property itself.
However, at all costs,, avoid the MacArthur dining room.
Dismal dinner.
- Sophie (10/5): - Welcoming staff, friendly atmosphere, clean and comfortable room!
- Melanie (10/5): - The beds are so comfy and everything was very clean. The staff were very professional and personable. Food was outstanding!.
- Alanna (10/5): - Great
- Cathy (6/5): Historical evening.... - Staff was awesome!!! The room we were in while very full of history in my opinion needs se attention. Bed was great! Furniture needs attention either retire it ir tidy it up, old English and tighten some screws etc. Food at the restaurant was pricey bit delicious steak!!!!!! Bruch was very good!!!! Truly did enjoy the history of the lobby!!!!!
- Christopher (2/5): - Sink wouldn't drain, reserved a double bed and didn't get it and the furniture look very old.
- Brian (6/5): - Hotel is tired and needs to be renovated
- kathleenmartz (10/5): Everything wonderful we could imagine! - The hotel location is beautiful! Loved our room! And the view of the Hudson River and all the activities on the river...the rowing teams, the barges, the ships. The weather was great when we were there and we loved taking our main meals on the terrace and hearing and seeing the trains. The food at the Thayer was excellent! And the best breakfast buffet I've ever seen! So many good choices! Staff was efficient and attentive. Especially Seth and Sandy. My first interaction with staff at the Thayer was with Emily. She was patient and informative in helping me select the exact type of room my husband and I wanted to be in to enjoy our stay at The Thayer. I made it a point to thank Emily in person before we left for home. I made a note of our room number for any future stays.
We were at The Thayer for a family wedding. The food for the reception was exceptional. And, everyone got their food hot and prepared to their liking! It was perfect! The marble wedding cake was beautifully decorated and delicious! The dance floor was roomy and the bar was set up in a perfect place.
We'd love to come again!
- 700brookn (4/5): Terrible food - My daughter booked her wedding and West Point and we went for a rehearsal dinner on September 19, 2025. The food was so terrible. We were served chicken cacciatore, Penne vodka, Fish, Seasonal vegetable, and Caesar salad. The main entrées were cold and tasteless.
The dinner at the wedding reception was better. However, the waitress was rather rude. She picked up a napkin that fell on the floor, folded, and put it back on the table. I had to ask to for a clean napkin.
It was a very expensive venue for the wedding and for the amount of money we paid, the hotel failed to meet the expectation.
- LOUIS (10/5): - The perfect place to stay
- gloria (10/5): - Beautiful and convenient
- Britney (6/5): - Wasn’t what I expected. Thought it was a luxury hotel. The military photos staring at you in the room was weird. But it was a nice old, rustic property.
- Nicole (10/5): - We had a wonderful time staying here. Friendly staff and most of all a historic building.
- Johanna (4/5): Beautiful Hotel but poor service and communication - Beautiful hotel— clean and comfortable. Loved being on the Hudson and Westpoint. When I checked in and let them know that we might not be able to stay the second night— they told me sorry and that I would need to discuss this with hotels.com as they booked the room. I was charged for two nights after leaving unexpectedly the second day— told me to contact hotels.com as they could do nothing. Contacted Hotels.com who said they had to reach out the Thayer who then said no refund and then after I called Thayer they said no one was able to make the decision until
Monday — confused with the actions of the manager -left a message with the reservation office person and have yet to hear and it’s Monday night. Hotels.com has communicated twice with me to let me know the Thayer has yet to respond. Poor service and communication. Westpoint is amazing but Thayer is way overrated.
- Ralph (8/5): - Train whitsle woke us up every 2 hrs overnight; Had riverview room;
- Douglas (10/5): - Excellent property. Great service by front desk. Terrible service at the Zulu deck because they were extremely understaffed on a very busy night. Staff at Zulu were helpful and worked hard but not enough staff so we waited an unacceptable time for both drink and food orders.
- bigbillmcpeek (10/5): Best hotel ever. - Visiting West Point for band concert and fireworks. Decided to stay overnight after the show. Best decision ever. The room, service, staff, breakfast the next morning and facility were beyond excellent perhaps superior. Would recommend this hotel to everyone .
- Patricia A. (10/5): - Room was ready early! Great service!
- leehZ9119NA (10/5): Wonderful visit - Our family stayed at the Thayer during Acceptance Day “weekend.” All aspects of our stay were great. Candidly, my prior stay fell woefully short of expectations and I was reticent to return. I’m glad I did though! The front desk staff was courteous, helpful and professional. During our first stay, we experienced problems with our room and our concerns fell on deaf ears. Our second visit was emblematic of what a guest should expect from a hotel that bears a responsibility to history and tradition like no other.
I recall my incredulity when , during our “R” Day stay, the front desk response to lights not working in the bathroom and the air conditioning malfunctioning was, “ This an historic hotel(answer to lights not working) and “did you close your drapes?”{response to no cool air from the AC unit)
Again, this stay was an entirely different experience. The folks at the front desk went above and beyond in every way, and I thank you.
I would also like to mention the fantastic service we received from our server,Debbie, at MacArthur’s Riverview Restaurant and Kevin at the Zulu Rooftop Bar&Lounge. Clone these two wonderful professionals; they embody hospitality!
- Derek (8/5): - good stay
- Patrick (8/5): - Service in the restaurant was slow...food was good.
- carolynkZ5685GZ (10/5): Made for a great West Point Week! - I had a fantastic stay at The Thayer! The location was perfect—close to everything I needed for my trip, making it easy to explore and enjoy my time. The setup was also great for working remotely, with a comfortable and quiet space that allowed me to stay productive. The mezzanine was great for working. It was the perfect balance of work and leisure, and I’d happily stay here again!
- LAWRENCE (10/5): - Historic hotel, with views of the Hudson from many rooms
- Richard (10/5): - Sights to see.
- Coastal60299791146 (10/5): Just fantastic, everything! - Wow! Just fantastic every thing. Immaculate, great service & really comfortable rooms! Rooftop was beautiful for sunset!
- Rodney (10/5): - Our only complaint was that the restaurant on more than one occasion gave what can be termed as poor service. The evening waitress seemed preoccupied, so she got no tip. Breakfast, we carried paper cups in and they did not offer us coffee. When we complained the girl came and apologized as we were leaving.
- jillsV5665BC (8/5): Two exceptional staff made our stay great - Amanda was so helpful to me and my mother during our visit to West Point for A-day. She went out of the way to help us, was so friendly and sweet! Harry at the valet check-in was also fantastic!
- strengthcoach (4/5): Beware of the lower floor rooms! - Thayer hotel
So disappointed right now @thayerhotel
Here to see our son for A Day. Booked a “premium double” room back in January when we learned he was going to West Point. Had to pay $600 a night in advance…. And this is what we got. A room at the bar level. Speaker for bar right outside window. Can’t raise a window shade or the entire restaurant can see us. Room is therefore dark and musty. 8 months in advance and this is the best they can do???
Desk staff says we are stuck with this room. Awful.
- John (8/5): - Overall good but lighting in room was too dim
- 839leonardl (4/5): Treasure in poor hands - Last November, my wife and I spent one night at the Thayer Hotel. It was terrible!
We walked in to the main lobby and there was loud, sappy country music on. Why? I was told that the office controlled the radio station that identified itself while we stood there in shock.
We checked in and had lunch. It was good and the servers were nice. After we went to our room to nap, having travelled for hours. It turns out that the closet for the next room was right by our bed and I jumped when they slid their clothes across the bar. I noticed that the carpets were very dirty wherever there was a walking path. I called the front desk to have the floor cleaned while we were at dinner.
We went down to the dining room but were a bit early. There was an event going on, but the music was still blaring. I suggested to the front desk that they turn it down. They were very nice but told me the music was controlled by Corporate.
We went in to dine. Our server barely spoke English. I ordered Schnitzel with an egg and anchovies, which is the classical way it is served. It was bought to me with a sauce. I told the server again what I wanted. Instead, she got a menu to show me how it was supposed to come and told me I was wrong. Then another server came over to discuss my order. All in all, four servers came over and they all tried to tell me I was wrong.
Finally, the manager came over and explained how they did not have any control about how food was served. She was very professional. We then wanted some lemon slices, but it took five times asking before they were brought. We were not even offered dessert.
As we left, we were told that they could not clean the carpets and wanted to move us to another room. The poor front desk! They heard about our meal, too. Being too tired after all this, we just went to sleep.
Is this the way a national treasure should treat its guests?
There is a sign in the lobby saying that millions were spent to restore the hotel. It is a shame that the restorers and management did not consider the guests. How dare they spoil such a treasure.
- W7338ZRkt (10/5): Outstanding food and service - Sandy was an amazing server for our Sunday brunch! The food was delicious with a lot of variety of both breakfast and lunch items (and bloody mary station and mimosas!) and the staff was outstanding. Cadets, kids and military discount. It is expensive but I have eaten brunch here since 1995, and keep coming back whenever I have the opportunity! Easy 10/10!!
- Pat (6/5): - Historic hotel- needs updating
Staff just ok
Outdoor roof top dining was terrible- wicker chairs all broken, quality of the food was poor, the music was intolerable.
- Stephen (10/5): - Great coffee, great staff, excellent food
- Jennifer (6/5): Thayer Hotel Review - My son and I stayed here while we were on a visit at Westpoint. We were very excited as the hotel is marketed as very high end. Parts of the hotel is indeed high end but the important aspects are not. The room does not come standard with a mini fridge, which I have never seen before. It is an additional charge to have one placed in your room. The AC in the room was VERY loud and old and leaked on the rug in the room. There is also a freight train line right next to the hotel and a freight will run through ALL night long and blows its whistle each time. The restaurant service in all three restaurants in the hotel was stellar. The people working there were so kind and friendly but the food was not worth the high prices. Then, upon checkout, there was an additional $25 service charge for each night that I was not aware of as I paid in full before arriving. I would not choose to stay at the Thayer Hotel again.
- amysO3260ZK (2/5): Unwelcoming - This hotel is inside West Point military academy. Between the military checkpoint to enter, the staff, and lobby decor, I felt very unwelcome.
- kaisers187 (4/5): Um, no - The charming marketing emails confirming reservation promise “We are committed to providing an atmosphere where our guests can create memorable moments through our state of the art facilities, luxurious accommodations, exquisite culinary creations, and unrivaled five star service.”
Um, no.
The hotel’s setting and view are lovely. But omg by no stretch is this even a three-star hotel. The food is awful. Other than the grand old main reception hall, there is no place to just sit and relax and enjoy a view of the river (other than the bars and restaurants with the bad food). There is no pool. The gym is small and basic. The staff seems grumpy and poorly trained. The decor in rooms is extremely dated and wasn’t stylish in the first place. I appreciate and respect the historic setting, and the portraits and appreciations of various Army veterans in the public areas and corridors. But in the actual guest rooms? Our “premium” room featured EIGHT framed, large photos of some corporate donor who I guess “sponsored” the completely unremarkable room. Portraits of this fellow were the only “decor” in the room. It is like sleeping within the pages of some cheesily produced annual report of a mildly important publicly traded company. Here’s the dude holding a big trophy! Standing in front of the HQ building! Holding a gun next to some poor rhino! Sitting in his living room with his wife!
- Hildagard (6/5): - The hotel is beautiful and rich in history. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Front desk staff are friendly and welcoming. However, mixed feelings with the restaurants staff. Some were friendly and others were not helpful and knowledgeable. Restaurant servers seemed to be unsure with military discounts. I was given 3 different percentages from 3 of their dining options. It clearly states on their website the percentage, but it doesn’t specify if it’s for the entire bill or per military members. That’s where the confusion lies. 2 out 3 dining options honored the military discount on the entire bill, where one server in another restaurant was not consistent. He was rude about the situation. In my opinion, management needs to review with the staff on policy so there won’t be future miscommunication.
- Richard (10/5): - Convenient stay for West Point function. Valet parking was excellent!
- Travellingrrl (10/5): Beautiful views and comfy bed - The Thayer is a must do for military families. While that wasn’t us, it was a nice stay. We booked for an overnight on the way to pick a kid up from summer camp.
My daughter and I enjoyed a dinner in the Zulutime Lounge and Breakfast at MacArthur’s in the morning. The bed was super comfy and even though it wasn’t described in the room info, we had a pull out loveseat which was great for my six year old.
- ELLEN (10/5): - Room was small but nice and very comfortable. The food was excellent.
- Lewis (10/5): - Trader stayed very much. The rooftop bar was wonderful.Staff was excellent.Looking forward to coming back again
- 286stever (10/5): Outstanding hotel, bring money! - Great hotel, rooms are outstanding, all named for an Army Officer with photos everywhere, even outside of every room. If you ever saw the Alien science movie Battleship, the Army Colonel who in real life lost both legs, plays a soldier in rehab, he has a room on the third floor. Just so you know, bring money, my wife had breakfast, I just had a cup of Joe, with tip $58.00. If you are a veteran and want to go on base, you will need to go to the visitor center downstairs, bring your VA card if you don't have a DOD card. With a DOD cards just drive on base. We arrived late the first night and looked in Highland Falls for a restaurant and found the only one open was McDonalds, a short walk from the hotel. Bring good ID, the security guards are always checking it, even making a right up to the hotel. West Point is an active Army Base, so they are careful.
- Russell (10/5): - Westpoint is a beautiful place.
- Robert (10/5): - The hotel is like a castle, very beautiful and the restaurant onsite is great as well.
- Julie (10/5): - Perfect for a visit to West Point.
- Patrick (10/5): - People working there are very kind and respectfully intelligent
- Donald (8/5): - Service was slow many tables were not clean after patrons had eaten
- 793leslees (4/5): Needs some serious TLC - What a shame. It is an historic hotel in a spectacular setting. The staff has not had any hospitality training. The breakfast buffet is depressing and severely lacking. For 2 days straight they ran out of coffee and when asked, the staff just shrugged. I found myself having to go to the waiter station and fill my own and others coffee. The decor in both the Patton Tavern and the MacArthur dining room is quite dreary and void of the basics: not a fresh flower in sight, not a candle on the tables and in the tavern the tables were not clean.
The staff is unresponsive. An automatic gratuity is added to the bill but it is done in a way that makes it unclear because at the end of the your check, a suggested range of gratuities are printed. So when we split the 3 ways, we each added a gratuity so we ended up realizing later we left a 45% tip!
The rooms need a refresh and our shower had hair conditioner all over the shower liner and bottom of the shower so when i stepped into the shower, I came close slipping wildly.
The finish inside the guest elevators is peeling and the carpet needs replacing.
On a positive note, our dinner in the MacArthur dining room was quite good clearly this chef has nothing to do with the dismal breakfast. The beds linens were very nice.
It is surprising that a hotel that is home to West Point is missing that attention to detail and precision one would expect. It is the only game in town so perhaps that might explain why some things are taken for granted. Let's hope someone will give this beautiful grand dame the care and attention she deserves.
- Janet (8/5): - Hotel lovely, front desk staff helpful and informative, rooms spacious and clean.
Bar and restaurant service not up to par- food and drinks were very good but the staff was off.
People Seating themselves out of order. Hostesses not controlling flow.
Requests for coffee / juice that never arrived.
Bills dropped at table with no pens in folio.
Tables reset with same - used table-clothes.
Overall lovely stay— but service needs a refresher so it is elevated to level of hotel.
- alicemaguire (8/5): Great hotel. Disappointing food. - Built out of stone, this historic building takes you back 100 years to the glory days of mountain elegance. While the rooms are slightly beaten up, they are clean, the views spectacular and the beds very nicely and prettily made up and comfortable. The lobby evokes an expansive, elegant castle interior. The restaurant features several dining areas including a patio with a view of the Hudson River. The restaurant is spacious enough to accommodate weddings and other large events. The grounds are actually part of the West Point compound so you can see cadets working out in the morning on the grounds below. The only negative is the food, some of which is ok and some over salted or bland. Breakfast is similar to that served in cheap chain hotels. The roof top bar is also very nice with equally disappointing fare.
- Jun (10/5): - Cool
- Nancy (6/5): - The train noise was awful- especially in the middle of the night. The hotel didn’t seem to be full so I didn’t know why they couldn’t have put us in a room farther from the tracks on the back side of the hotel.
- K4554SSmonicam (10/5): Wonderful location - It was our first trip here. The staff were all very friendly and the room was spacious and super clean. We will be back in August and look forward to it!
- Kelly (10/5): - Beautiful and was perfect for visiting West Point
- Mary (10/5): Friendly staff! - We were lucky enough to get a last minute stay at Thayer for our trip. The staff was super helpful and friendly. They were great with recommendations for local places to play golf and dine. The room and hotel were clean. There are reviews that say there’s noise from planes and trains but we didn’t hear a thing.
- jack (6/5): - The two emails you sent were very long but lack a phone number and erroneous directions about clearance.
- Kathleen (6/5): - Noise of train and noise of ice machine and elevator noise
Minimal restroom facilities close by
- amy (10/5): - Unexpected classic charm and elegance for a hotel located at an army academy. Clean and comfortable.
- Marcela (8/5): - I have to recognize two individuals who were great. My flight was canceled and I was not able to arrive on Friday. I spoke to the front desk manager Emily and she was extremely helpful. Could have passed me off since I had made reservations via Expedia but she didn’t. The second person was the main valet kid. I say kid because he could have not been more than 20 years old. I feel bad I cannot remember his name. Super friendly, helpful and was quick to get my car and was quick to get my car. He was running a well oiled valet machine.
- Jesse (6/5): - The pictures on line are way nicer than what it looks like in person.
Room and bathroom was very old and dated. Nice bed though.
- TrailBlazer586497 (10/5): Thayer Hotel is the best - The Thayer was absolutely wonderful. The place is beautiful, the service is great and the restaurant and bar provides a fun place to let our hair down. Thank you, everyone at Thayer, for making our time there memorable.
- R723ZBpaulh (10/5): Thayer Excellence - Contracted Out for a Wedding Reception. Outstanding Service from the Doorman/Valet to the Reception Team to the Catering Team to the Chef. Could not have been better. Thank you to the entire Team for pulling off an "Outstanding" Event under "Raining Conditions".
- Kelly (10/5): - Wonderful historic hotel. We enjoyed our stay very much and are looking toward to our next visit.
- Gabriel (10/5): - Good breakfast
Beautiful hotel
- F1284ACcj (10/5): Fantastic Live Stream of USMA Graduation Banque - The Thayer Hotel live streamed USMA Graduation Banquet and it was fantastic! It felt like we were inside the mess hall. We got to hear each of the speakers and their words of wisdom on a huge screen. The food and service were top notch and it was a great place to celebrate with extended family. Oh, the views…the views of the Hudson River were amazing! If you ever visit West Point, it’s worth stopping in to the Thayer Hotel for exceptional food. We booked rooms for next year already!
- Matthew (10/5): - 👍
- Christine (10/5): - Great history to be found all around-room was great!
- X1275NUjohng (10/5): Visit by Grad to show WP to his family - Not much choice in the area if you want to be close to WP. Liked the Grad Tour and the Annapolis grad who gave it. Breakfasts were very good; dinners were good. Was there over a weekend so parking was plentiful. During the week, close-in, it would have been almost non-existent. No on-post bus service on the weekends. The WP campus is very compact, a walking tour works out well. It was easy to see everything worth seeing. Hotel rooms are a bit pricey, but I won't be doing it much more.
- benrN4425UL (10/5): That rare place where "Guest Services" is more than a title or position. - There was a time when the great hoteliers truly desired to make their guests feel like they were, well, guests. There was never a condescending attitude. They didn't think of themselves as superior, nor of their guests as inferior, only with genuine humility thought of their guess as important. They were eager to fulfill any and every reasonable request solely because you were their guest. It was a wonderful time to travel.
Last week I discovered that this wonderful time still exists at The Thayer Hotel. While The Thayer has all the architectural and decorative trappings of the great hotels, it would be nothing more than a museum if not for its people. They all are simply the best I've encountered in years. It begins with being greeted with a smile upon arriving at the front entrance, but flowers when checking in at the front desk, where Alison and Erin "meet" their guests, forming a friendship exhibited throughout your stay. Whatever the request, there always seems to be in its fulfillment a bit extra included, all done with that humble attitude of a host. You will catch yourself thinking, "Wow! They make me feel important."
And that attitude doesn't stop at the front desk but permeates the entire staff. For example, its in every restaurant, and particularly in MacArthur's, where every person there desires to please. A special recognition belongs to the master chef creating the best omelet ever. (I previously considered my omelet to be rather good. Not now.) He is truly a master, but unlike many of today's self-important chefs, has that same humble attitude of desiring to fulfill each request.
Another special recognition should be given to their bell staff, which traditional title is woefully short of all they do, for they wish to help whenever with whatever is needed. The young bellman Harry, and his twin brother Cam, manifest this ever-present desire to please. I believe Harry looks at any request to be fulfilled as if he had made the request for himself, thus going beyond merely providing the service requested. When we were at a loss of how to get something done, my wife would say, "Just ask Harry."
But she could have also just as truthfully said, "Just ask Alison, or Erin, or Harry, or Cam, or any other of our hosts, yes, our hosts. For once again, after years of absence, we have found a place in which we feel like welcomed guests. Please, don't change.
- julias42677 (4/5): Too expensive for the experience - Their windows don't block noise at all and they have an outdoor bar open until 11 PM with trains passing constantly. If there are weddings, they can keep that bar open even later. One of the nights, there was a party until past 1 am with music blasting and people shouting. They charge really high rates as well as a facility fee so this is truly unjustifiable. Absolutely nothing blocked the sound out and I basically couldn't sleep for two nights in a row. I understand they're hosting events but if you can't provide soundproofing and guests are paying over $350 a night, that's not reasonable. The staff was generally unsympathetic about it as well (I understand there's not much they can do but again given the prices it felt a little unpleasant).

- Janine (6/5): - The grounds were very nice and the beds were very comfortable. The service was very inconsistent, guys at the bar were great but the seemed uninterested or bothered with helping guests. Surprising for such an expensive place
- kipo894 (10/5): Awesome customer service!!! - So I had the opportunity to check in a whole day early and didn’t want to have to switch rooms for my original reservation. Amanda at the front desk was awesome and made it work!! She just needed a few minutes to work her magic!! Despite being super busy she asked me to be patient while she found a solution. And she did.
- Amy (10/5): EXTRAORDINARY!!! - I can’t wait to return to this beautiful and storied hotel which honors the men and women who, for centuries, have given so much of themselves to protect our great nation! With heartfelt gratitude to our U.S. Army…and to The Thayer Hotel for making my stay at West Point most special and memorable!
- Relax48662203797 (10/5): Stay at the Thayer when visiting West Point. It's part of the experience. - The Thayer is the best!! It is THE place to stay when visiting West Point. Yas and Siobhan were extremely helpful with reservations. Rooms are great. So much history. The view of the Hudson is very special. It's easy to access the hotel without requiring a pass for the post. Good food, especially the brunch buffet.
- Kelly (10/5): - Staff is always super pleasant & accomodating.
- Josephine (8/5): - Accommodating staff for a person needing help with mobility. Excellent linens and room and historic setting, especially for visitors with USMA connections. If possible, avoid the restaurant. Poor food and harried service.
- Jerseyjoan12025 (10/5): '65 reunion (see above note). - I have enjoyed the Thayer fo 64 years. I stayed here as a cadet date (4 years') as a bride before the ceremony, and for many reunions. It's like coming home. I'm always impressed with the servtce and staff. The communication is excellent. This visit was perfect. I cannot wait until I return. Thank you!
- Jim (8/5): - The hotel and staff were overall excellent except for the female waitress on Saturday morning breakfast . The dinner waitress was outstanding.
The Saturday morning hot buffet breafast food was not hot at all . It clearly was not worth the price and the service was terrible .
- valdezv2017 (10/5): Easter Brunch Hotel Thayer - Went to Easter Brunch today at Hotel Thayer. Warm, friendly professional service and delicious food. Variety of choices and well organized. We have tried for years to obtain a reservation and we never could. It was our good fortune to have brunch there today with a beautiful river view also. More restaurants should be like this one. Thank you Estephanie (our server) for your hospitality and thank you Hotel Thayer.
- lauren (10/5): - Thank for helping the Tate family 4/15-4/20 while we were at West Point for my fathers burial and celebration of life. Everyone was wonderfull
Sincerely,
The Tate family
- Kathleen (10/5): - Beautiful elegant hotel with a lot of history. Wonderful setting.
- Wayne (6/5): - Ok
- James (10/5): - It is next to West Point and we are afforded the opportunity to visit with our son and his friends. We also enjoy drinks outside the hotel bar to have a quiet visit when the bar over overrun with old deaf artillery alum.
- Bmood (4/5): Disappointing experience from the hotel that represents the historical West Point… - To be located on West Point’s post, a military academy that prides
itself in leadership, discipline and attention to detail, the service at this hotel really disappoints the expectations. The service teams (front desk, valet, restaurants, etc.) should be structured in the manner of the leadership courses so often taught there. We experienced USAFA and the Polaris Hotel (the hotel affiliated with the Air Force Academy) just 2 weeks prior to visiting here and there is no comparison to the service teams. There is so much potential for this historical hotel to represent the academy and the history in a manner it deserves and unfortunately the opportunity is being missed. My hope is that Rick Minicozzi (Chief Executive Officer at Thayer Leader Group Development and a West Point Grad himself) realizes an opportunity to bring a vibrance to this historical hotel; takes advantage of an opportunity to lead and develop employees to the standards he’s been taught and disciplined in; and seizes a major opportunity to bring back hospitality and a professionalism that meets and lives up to the standards and expectations one would expect representing the one and only West Point. If our son does decide to accept his appointment to West Point we will certainly pursue all other avenues before returning to the Thayer Hotel.
- Pamela (8/5): - It is so convenient to stay at when visiting West Point.
- FRANK (8/5): - Close to West point
- Joseph (8/5): - Great improvement over years ago. Rooms very clean. Front door attendants pleasant but need to be a bit more proper and not 'chill.' Please place bottles of water in the room for guest convenience (just pass along the nominal cost if you need to); that is 'easy fix' low-hanging service fruit that you need to address. Thank you
- Elizabeth (10/5): - Beautiful, convenient stay while visiting cadet at West Point
- Juan (10/5): - So much history and beauty.
